‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie’ Review: A Less-Than-Radical Entry in the Cowabunga Canon
Image
Though their popularity peaked long before most of today’s actual teenagers were born, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never really went away. We’re only six years removed from the most recent live-action film based on the pizza-loving reptiles, and it was just two months ago that a new Tmnt video game was released. Ant Ward and Andy Suriano’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie,” which arrives on Netflix this week, is based on the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2018 to 2020. While unlikely to bring any nostalgia-minded fans of the series’ early-’90s heyday back into the fold, “Rise” is a serviceable — if also forgettable — entry in the cowabunga canon.

It would be difficult to overstate how obsessed with ninjas and martial arts children were in the ’90s, with the franchise riding the same wave as “Mortal Kombat,” “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” and the “3 Ninjas” movies.

Still Tbd whether Paramount will be showing footage down there from its upcoming animated feature The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, but it wouldn’t be a shocker. The movie opens on May 22, 2020.

Nickelodeon to Hold SpongeBob 20th Birthday Blowout at Comic-Con
Joseph Baxter Jun 18, 2019

SpongeBob SquarePants’s 20th anniversary will be the center of Nickelodeon’s grandiose Comic-Con presence this year.

SpongeBob SquarePants is turning 20 soon; a fact that Nickelodeon has spent much of the year reminding the world in celebratory jubilance. Besides the July 20 special, SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout!, the diminutive dweller of a pineapple under the sea has lined up another movie, a confirmed prequel series and even possible spinoffs. However, San Diego Comic-Con will be the backdrop for a more ephemeral experience to celebrate said birthday, with Nickelodeon promising a party unlike anything else for convention attendees.

Nickelodeon is transforming the floor of Comic-Con into SpongeBob’s undersea hamlet home, Bikini Bottom! – Well, 1800 square feet of said floor, anyway. Indeed, Comic-Con International: San Diego July 18-21, 2019 will see the channel – in addition to an array of meet-and-greets, signings and giveaways – host an interactive experience for its...

Nickelodeon Shells Out New Take on Turtles Network pulled back merchandise to reinvent and relaunch familiar characters

As long as pizza remains popular, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be ripe for reinvention.

What began as a comic book series in 1984 is now one of the most durable properties in kids’ media. In September, Nickelodeon debuted the 2D animated series “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” the network’s second reboot of the property following a CGI-animated show that ran from 2012-17.

According to Pam Kaufman, Viacom/Nickelodeon’s president of consumer products, merchandise played a key role in both reboots. “Back in...

Still finishing up its final season, Game of Thrones won’t be unleashing its Hall H power this year but television will still be storming Comic-Con this year. Watch The Opening Sequence For The New Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series
Nickelodeon recently released the opening sequence for their upcoming new cartoon series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The opening sequence also includes a wild new riff on the classic 90s Tmnt cartoon opening theme song.

The first trailer for this film completely turned me off. It's hard for me to get past these character designs. But some people seem to dig what this series is going to deliver. Some people are saying that the animation work is innovative, but I'll let you decide what that means to you.

In the end, the series is for kids and this looks like the kind of stuff that they're already used to. It looks like it will certainly stimulate their brains! Also, in case you didn't know, Raphael is the new leader of the Ninja Turtles in this series.

Nickelodeon’s ‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Gets Annecy First Look
Co-executive producers Andy Suriano and Ant Ward were in Annecy for their first time this year to give an in-depth, behind the scenes look at their forthcoming series, “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Held at the Salle Pierre Lamy, the two showed artwork, explained the development process which led to the series, and even screened a two-minute clip from the show, which will be launched by Nickelodeon this fall.

All of the work on the series is being handled by Nickelodeon in Los Angeles, apart from animation which is being done at Australia’s Flying Bark. “They are killing it!” said Ward.

As one might except from the title, Nickelodeon’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” won’t be picking up where previous iterations of the IP have dropped off, but rather a fresh retelling of the stories behind Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo, with other Tmnt staples to feature.

The Next Mutation: Nickelodeon Reinvents ‘Turtles,’ ‘Blue’s Clues’ for a New Generation
Cowabunga, dude. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is about to get a reboot at Nickelodeon, where the network is ready to introduce the characters to a new generation of viewers, one of several venerable properties the network is reviving. And the net knows this generation of kids will want new things from these series.

“In order to reach [our audience] we’re going to have to use our entire ecosystem,” says Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon Group. “And our ecosystem includes some social, some digital, a relationship with our retail and toy partners, so we have the ability to mobilize the scope of our business to help make something successful. It’s a different vision of prioritization now that we have so many more tools now.”

The re-imagined turtles will appear in “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” a 2D-animated series co-executive produced by Andy Suriano, who previously did character design for “Samurai Jack,...

Sid Krofft at an event for Land of the Lost (2009)
How Sid Krofft and Marty Krofft Inspired The Next Wave of Content Creators
Sid Krofft at an event for Land of the Lost (2009)
Sid and Marty Krofft have often said that, through their programming, they “messed with kids’ minds.” But that has proven not to be a negative thing, as their programs not only entertained but inspired future content creators.

“Instead of trying to capture grounded reality with their puppetry, [Sid and Marty] celebrated the absurd and embraced the cartoon sensibility,” says Dan Milano, creator of “Greg the Bunny,” who later worked with the Kroffts on a feature adaptation of “H.R. Pufnstuf.”

“They understand a child’s imagination and how fragmented and sweet — but with an edge of darkness — it can be.”

Milano discovered at an early age that it was entirely feasible to grow up and become a paid creator by watching Krofft productions.

“It made it so that I didn’t feel it was unusual at all that I would draw silly pictures, do silly voices, put on puppet shows, make them talk, and...

Does This First Trailer For Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sell You on the Series?
Nickelodeon has released the first trailer for their new animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I personally think it looks awful. I already wasn't a fan of the character designs when they were first revealed, but it looks even worse watching them in action. I'm not a big fan of this rise in animation that looks cheap that we're seeing these days. I know the series was made for kids, I just think it's a shame that this is the kind of stuff that they have to grow up with. I've seen some people say it's innovative animation work, but that's obviously not what I'm seeing!

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the band of brothers - Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo - as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City.

Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character art revealed
Matt Edwards Feb 2, 2018

Nickelodeon has unveiled character art for their upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon reboot...

Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be hitting the channel later this year. Ahead of that, a Facebook Live broadcast featuring executive producers Andy Suriano and Ant Ward alongside long time Ninja Turtles voice actor and Rise voice director Rob Paulson was used to reveal what some of the key characters of the show will look like. The broadcast was hosted by Eric Bauza, who will voice Splinter in the new show, and also featured Tmnt co-creator Kevin Eastman drawing a Turtle sketch live.

The new art style seeks to distinguish the pizza-scoffing reptilian ninjas from one another, with each a different species of turtle. Raphael (voiced by Omar Miller), who will lead the Turtles in Rise, is a snapping turtle, Leonardo (Ben Schwartz) is a red eared slider (hence the...

First Look at the Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutles Animated Series Revealed
Nickelodeon has been developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series called Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the creative team is looking to mix it up. Today we have our first look at the main character of the new series and as you can see, there's a whole new visual style for Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and April O'Neil.

I'll be honest, I don't really care for the new style. It comes off as rushed and cheap. I understand that this is a kids show, but even kids shows can have a quality style and design. Here's the synopsis that was previously released:

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo on all-new adventures as they seek to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City. From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the Turtles will encounter absurd new...

Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon Series Voice Cast Announced
A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is on its way to Nickelodeon, called Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they recently announced the cast that will make up the team of ninja turtles.

Ben Schwartz has been cast as Leonardo. I greatly disliked Schwartz’s character Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation, but that’s because he did such a great job, and while I normally wouldn’t like the idea of him being Leo, but it sounds like some changes are being made to the show to make it fresh. Leo is no longer the leader, but rather the cooler, rebellious brother while Raphael (voiced by Omar Miller) takes charge as leader. Donatello (voiced by Silicon Valley's Josh Brener) and still seems to be a techno-geek and Brandon Mychal Smith’s Michelangelo sounds like he’ll be the lovable Mikey we know.

In addition, to the turtles,...

Samurai Jack is Back with a Great New Comic!
Samurai Jack #1

Writer: Jim Zub

Art: Andy Suriano

Lettering: Shawn Lee

Editor: Carlos Guzman

Publisher: Idw

This is a great time to be alive! Not only are we in a new golden age of comic books, also known as the ‘creator-age’ but television shows long thought lost are springing to life right before our eyes. While some television shows are dragged out, all but ruining any good will—ahem Dexter, some burn so bright for such a short time that they never really leave the collective conscience. The tale of Samurai Jack is one of those television shows.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the awesomeness that is Samurai Jack, the story is a simple one. Actually let’s do this verbatim (note– please read this in your best Mako voice):

“Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, The shape-shifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil!

Samurai Jack Stages his Return – ‘Bout Time
The greatest Samurai of all time is staging his return.

Samurai Jack is coming back… though sadly not in animated form. However, he will be appearing in comic book series from Idw Publishing. The comic, entitled Samurai Jack, will feature variant covers from creator, Genndy Tartakovsky. Andy Suriano, who was the character designer on the original Cartoon Network series, will join writer Jim Zub to develop the comic series.

The monthly series will debut this October from Idw Publishing and will start off with a 5-issue arc, entitled “Rope of Eons.” I was actually it would be a spin-off of the “Jump Good” episodes – a personal favorite.

If you don’t know about Samurai Jack and his epic time traveling war with the ancient demon wizard, Aku, you should definitely pick up the series on DVD.

When cartoons switched over to the newer, Flash-animation style, Samurai Jack was the series...

Welcome Back, Samurai Jack!
Even though it has been nine years since the series ended, many people still fondly remember Samurai Jack from creator Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls) as one of the best shows ever on the Cartoon Network, and fans now have a good reason to rejoice! A new comic published by Idw Publishing will be continuing the adventures of Jack the displaced samurai warrior and his archrival Aku the shape-shifting monster. It will be written by Jim Zub (Skullkickers) and illustrated by Andy Suriano (character designer for the original Samurai Jack series). Zub said, "As a Jack and Genndy fan, I'm thrilled to be writing new stories that continue where the TV series left off. I'm channeling my inner samurai to deliver a fun action-packed ride each...

Nominations for the 40th Annual Annie Awards!
I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.

Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.

Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Plastic Man: The Complete Collection—The DVD Review
The Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Show (Warner Home Video, $44.98) preserves all 35 exploits of America’s most pliable superhero from his 1979-80 Saturday morning series. Long before Mr. Fantastic, Elastigirl (a.k.a. Mrs. Incredible) and Elastic Man, there was Plastic Man, a hero my Dad read and liked in the 1940s. Jack Cole (another of comicdom’s troubled geniuses) created the fun-loving character for Quality Comics in 1941, both writing and inventively illustrating the stories. Since Plas (as he was nicknamed) was, shall we say, flexible, Cole broke comic book conventions with his innovative layouts. See Forms Stressed To Their Limits: Jack Cole & Plastic Man, the excellent (and beautifully designed) book by Art Spiegelman & Chip Kidd for more on Cole’s talents and troubles. Anyhow, Quality’s major heroes (notably Blackhawk and Plas) got sold to DC comics in the late 1950s. Every so often in the intervening half-century, Plastic Man...
