Lupin and Hijack creator George Kay is launching an All3 Media-backed indie.
Observatory Pictures has been set up in partnership with New Pictures, the All3Media-owned drama producer behind shows including Kay’s ITV drama The Long Shadow.
Under terms of the pact, all of Observatory’s projects will be co-produced with New Pictures, with All3Media International holding international distribution rights.
Kay will work closely with New Pictures’ CEO Willow Grylls and executive producer Matt Sandford. He will look to create and shown “ambitious, commercially-successful high-end drama series” for streamers and networks in the UK and internationally.
We understand Kay’s previous indie, Idiotlamp Productions, which he ran with director Jim Field-Smith, will remain operational, but only for existing IP such as Hijack. All new Kay creations will go through Observatory.

Fans of the AppleTV+ series Hijack have been forced to endure a long wait for the second season of the popular thriller.
The bad news is that they'll need to wait at least a few more months, as filming for Hijack Season 2 is currently underway in the UK.
The good news is that star Idris Elba will be joined by a top-tier supporting cast when the show eventually makes its way back to our screens.
Deadline reported today that three very talented stars are currently on set in London.
First off is Toby Jones, a British actor, who might he might be best known for his work in American period pieces, such as Frost/Nixon, My Week With Marilyn, and Infamous (in which he memorably portrayed Truman Capote).
While he's gained a reputation as an esteemed "actor's actor," Jones is no stranger to the world of action and green screens.

Toby Jones, Lisa Vicari and Christiane Paul are set to join season two of Apple TV+’s Hijack, produced by and starring Idris Elbra.
Since its debut, Hijack has become one of Apple TV+’s top dramas. Details on the story for season two are being kept under wraps, but Elba will reprise his role as Sam Nelson — a corporate negotiator who in the first season used his skills to bring about a resolution to the hijacking of a flight on which he was a passenger.
Hijack, which concluded its seven-episode first season in August, drew solid viewership for Apple TV+, becoming the second series on the platform (after Ted Lasso) to earn a spot on Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming chart. Reviews were generally favorable as well, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV critic Angie Han noting that co-creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith “keep the tension at a delicious thrum.

Back in Die Hard 2, John McClane uttered the legendary line: “How could the same shit happen to the same guy twice?” Foiling one terrorist plot is something – but getting tangled up in a second one? That’s seriously bad luck. Well, Idris Elba’s Sam Nelson is about to find himself in McClane mode: after navigating a high-stakes plane hijacking in Apple TV+’s Hijack, he’s going to be taking on another suspenseful situation in an upcoming Season 2. The streamer has confirmed that the show will be back for more, with Elba returning too.
Little is known about what the next season will entail. Will Nelson somehow find himself on another hijacked plane? Will it be another mode of transport altogether? Or will it sidestep the whole hijacking thing, and simply pit him in another generally hostage-based negotiation? Whatever it entails, Elba promises more excitement to come. “I...

George Kay looks conflicted. Speaking to Deadline before the resolution of the writers strike, the British WGA member had put down his pen on an Amazon Studios movie project and ducked a U.S. publicity round for his Apple TV+ series Hijack. But it’s fair to say that the strikes coincided with Kay having a serious moment.
Not unlike the protagonist in Hijack, Idris Elba’s brooding professional negotiator Sam Nelson, Kay has spent years maneuvering his way between three complex projects for Apple, Netflix and ITV/Sundance—only for them all to launch within four months of each other.
Just like Nelson’s character in Hijack—“He gets brought in, by big companies…when it all kicks off,” Nelson’s wife explains to a police officer in the show—Kay’s the man you bring in when you want to deliver a character-led thriller that will keep viewers hooked over several episodes.

The following contains spoilers for Beef, now streaming on Netflix
Beef is one of the year's darkest (and most compelling) shows, a pitch-dark comedy about Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong)'s increasingly destructive feud. The series -- created by Lee Sung Jin -- is currently nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for Jake Schreier. Schreier is also going to put his stamp on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the upcoming Thunderbolts, which is currently set to also star Yeun in a so far undisclosed role.
The two projects may not initially seem to share a lot, but Schreier has hinted that the focus on small human moments amidst a bombastic scope serves as a throughline between the Netflix miniseries and the upcoming blockbuster. During an interview with Cbr, Jake Schreier discussed the human elements that grounded Beef's most bombastic beats, that scene from the show's penultimate episode,...

Debuting thirty years ago, Babylon 5 remains a wholly unique entry in the sci-fi genre. Focusing on the titular space station as its crew attempts to bring peace across the universe, the show kept a very character-driven touch even as it introduced telepathic spies, ancient beings, and cosmic wars. Throughout it all, the show stood out for a landmark approach to long-form storytelling that's influenced television ever since. The sci-fi drama is now coming back to life in the form of Babylon 5: The Road Home, with the original animated film reuniting much of the remaining cast for a new adventure.

The following contains spoilers for Hijack Season 1, available to stream on Apple TV+.
One of the most taut, tightly constructed series of the year is Hijack, the original thriller created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith for Apple TV+. The series stars Idris Elba as business negotiator Sam Nelson, who finds himself on a plane en route to London hijacked by gunmen. The series kept audiences guessing about the hijackers' motives and how Sam would escape across its seven episodes, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
By the series' conclusion, the airliner has barely averted a crash in downtown London, and Sam is safely back on the ground after a scuffle with the lead hijacker, but the shadowy forces behind the hijacking are still very much on the loose. Idris Elba is open to returning for a possible second season of Hijack, but he has one requirement - he doesn't want another hijacking storyline. Hijack season 2 has not been confirmed yet, but Apple TV+ and the fans have shown interest in the show, with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. The story details for Hijack season 2 are unknown at this time, but Elba is interested in seeing Sam Nelson in a new adventure, not a repeat of the first season's story.
Hijack season 2 is a possibility now that the breakout Apple TV Plus thriller has ended, and Idris Elba has said he is more than interested in returning to the role in a second season. The first season of the Apple TV Plus saw Elba play Sam Nelson, a corporate business investigator who ended up on a plane going from Dubai to London that was hijacked by organized crime members acting as terrorists.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the season finale of “Hijack,” which dropped on Aug. 4 on Apple TV+.
“Will Kingdom Airlines Flight 29 land safely?” is the question that “Hijack” fans have been asking since the moment arch negotiator Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) first spotted a suspicious-looking toiletry bag being passed from one passenger to another in the aircraft’s plush first class cabin.
Now, after five nail-biting weeks, audiences will finally find out whether Nelson has managed to outwit the hijackers. To mark the season finale, “Hijack” executive producer Hakan Kousetta sat down with Variety to discuss fan reactions, that nerve-wracking ending and whether Elba is likely to return as Nelson for a second season.
Firstly, what has the reaction been like to the series so far?
It’s a very bingeable series, and the weekly release strategy of Apple is obviously wonderfully brilliant in terms of creating that watercooler conversation thing.

[Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers for the Hijack finale, "Brace Brace Brace."]
There's no denying that the creative team behind Hijack sought to authentically depict the chaos aboard Kingdom Airlines Flight 29. Even before a group of armed hijackers overtake the cockpit — a storyline that plays out in real time across seven episodes — the Idris Elba-led Apple TV+ thriller grounds its story in the relatable terror of being trapped in a confined space with stressed out strangers. To best convey these anxieties, creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith and production designer Andrew Purcell built a 164-foot set, filled it with real flight instruments, including a simulator showing KA29's route from Dubai to London, and utilized volume screens and adjustable lighting to mimic the sun's movement over the course of the flight. As Smith said in a behind-the-scenes featurette, "We've paid attention to every last detail."...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Hijack Season 1 finale.] With the season that wraps on Apple TV+ on August 2, Hijack does tell a complete story: Sam (Idris Elba), using his skills as a negotiator, does help land the plane despite quite a few twists involving the hijacking and those involved. However, it’s easy to see how a second season could put him in a different situation where he’d have to find a way to talk himself and others out of trouble. But will that happen? “Oh, never say never on anything,” co-creator and executive producer Jim Field Smith tells TV Insider what he would or wouldn’t want to do in a second season. “I think Sam as a character is really compelling, I think the way Idris portrays him is really compelling, and I think it would always be interesting to see how he would react in other situations, of course.” As for...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Hijack Season 1 finale.] Seven hours later, Flight KA29 does reach London … but not without a few more twists in the Hijack Season 1 finale. It ends with Sam (Idris Elba) using his skills as a negotiator to talk Amanda (Holly Aird), who’d taken over the cockpit and was prepared to crash the plane since her daughter’s life was being threatened, into letting him join her — then listening as Alice (Eve Myles) guided her into a rough landing. Below, co-creators and executive producers Jim Field Smith and George Kay break down the finale. I like that the season ends before Sam does actually get off the plane — it’s fitting, given the story. Was that always the plan? George Kay: It was part of the storyline, and I think we liked the fact that so much of the show happens within the journey, so it’d be cool to try...

Idris Elba stars in Apple TV+’s ‘Hijack’
Apple TV+’s Hijack, which premiered on June 28, 2023 with the release of the first two episodes, is a seven-episode, edge-of-your-seat thriller told in real-time. As the title suggests, the series involves the hijacking of an airplane. Five-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba (Luther) stars as Sam Nelson, one of the trapped passengers and a man who just happens to possess a specific set of skills that makes him the perfect negotiator.
The action in Hijack takes place onboard the fictional Kingdom Airlines 29 (KA29), originating out of Dubai and bound for London. The series utilized a real Airbus A330 plane (retired from service) to bring that claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in a situation completely out of your control to life.
For series star Idris Elba, shooting in such a confined environment might have been difficult, but it paid off onscreen.

Imitation is the sincerest form of television, but some aspects of hit shows are easier to imitate than others. Fox’s 24, for instance, inspired other dramas built around international intrigue, most notably Homeland (which shared several producers). But nobody else attempted to set an entire series in real time. Oh, you’d occasionally see a show do a real-time episode, like the online-ordering fiasco from The Bear Season One, but no one has been brave or foolish enough to attempt it on a regular basis.
It’s not hard to understand why.

In the new Apple TV+ series “Hijack,” Archie Panjabi plays counter-terrorist agent Zarah, who gets a tip that there has been a “serious incident” on board a plane bound for London — a tip that is, at first, written off as a false alarm.
Meanwhile, Idris Elba (who also produces) plays businessman Sam Nelson, who’s trying to outwit the hijackers on board with a series of high-stakes gambits that may or may not work out.
The first two episodes of the series from co-creators Jim Field Smith and George Kay debut June 28 on Apple TV+. Panjabi, who previously starred on Peacock’s “Departure” and TNT’s “Snowpiercer,” promises viewers will be “at the edge of your seat for the eight-episode series, which unfolds in real time.

Were it not for, you know, its terror-at-35,000-feet concept, Apple TV+’s Hijack would be the TV equivalent of a classic plane read: slick, exciting, unfussy. As it stands, it’s ideal for a lazy weekend planted firmly on the couch. Creators George Kay (Lupin) and Jim Field Smith (Litvinenko) may not be pushing the bounds of the medium, nor is star Idris Elba elevating his craft to new heights. But there’s something to be said for a show that knows exactly what it wants to be, and pulls it off without pretension.
Its premise is as straightforward as its title. Unfolding in real time, 24-style, the seven-hour miniseries chronicles a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London. By the end of the first chapter, a small group of nefarious agents, led by the sneering Stuart (Neil Maskell), have taken control of the plane. Over the next six, the...
