Released under the name “Mutafukaz” in international territories. Mfkz is a collaboration from French comic artist Guillaume “Run” Renard and ultra-hip Japanese animation house Studio 4°C, creators of Tekkonkinkreet, Genius Party and Mind Game. The Tekkonkinkreet dream team of Shoujirou Nishimi and art director Shinji Kimura reunite to bring to life a dark but stunningly animated sci-fi vision that mixes anime, film noir, Lucha Libre, and gang culture in an orgy of first-person shooter mayhem.

I honestly thought I had seen the best this year had to offer by way of animated movies after having seen Teen Titans Go: To The Movies… that was of course till I received a trailer for the Mfkz. Now I have been known to get a little bit excited...

Adapting his own graphic novel, Guillaume Renard pieces together a dense reimagining of La that’s impressive – until you stop to think about it

The title of this exhaustingly grimy and chaotic collaboration between French and Japanese animators is both a blunt contraction of the Oedipal expletive and a statement of attitudinal intent. No time for anything so wussy as vowels: writer/co-director Guillaume “Run” Renard instead whips his own graphic novel’s highlights into a frenetic postmodern melange that sends pizza delivery boy Angelino scooting through diverse appropriated cultures.

Any film encompassing Nazi-punching lucha libre wrestlers and top-secret moonbases should by rights be huge fun, but even Renard finds himself conceding, “What the F*** is Going On?” in a mid-film graphic. Enjoyment will depend on a tolerance for that randomness teenagers apparently find hilarious.

La-inspired dystopia plays host to this animated fantasy.

Celluloid Dreams has announced a raft of deals on French-Japanese futuristic animation Mutafukaz, a fantasy set against the backdrop of Los Angeles-inspired dystopia Dark Meat City.

It has sold to Australia, New Zealand and the UK (Manga), Germany and Austria (Peppermint), Spain (Mediatres) and Switzerland (MovieBiz).

The feature is co-directed by French writer and illustrator Guillaume Renard, who goes by the artistic name of Run, and Japanese animation director Shoujirou Nishimi. The film is based on an original idea first explored by Renard in a short film and a series of comic books

Mutafukaz is produced by Ankama, France’s second largest gaming and animation company in collaboration with Japanese animation company Studio 4°C.

Ankama is teaming with Tamasa Distribution to release the film on May 23 and Parco will launch the film in Japan in the third quarter of 2018.

Aiming to make an impact this Oscar season, the inaugural Animation Is Film Festival from GKids, the Annecy International Animation Festival, Variety, and Acifa-Hollywood launches October 20-22 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater.

The festival will present a selection of new animated feature films from Asia, Europe, South America, and North America, with juried and audience prizes and filmmakers attending most screenings. Additionally, the festival will feature studio events, special screenings, short film programs, and a Vr lounge.

Aif seems well timed: The Academy now allows all members to vote for animated features, using preferential voting. However, it remains to be seen what the dynamic will be in terms of mainstream versus indie nominees.

I’m really hoping that somebody out there is familiar with this French comic book, because this is the first time I’m hearing of its existence; so I can’t say much about its content, other than what’s been written about it. So, if you’ve read it, please give me a breakdown of it.

The name of the 20-something “ghetto-dweller” is Angelino; he lives with his best friend Vinz in a hotel room, in Dark Meat City.
