The soundtrack for “We Were Liars” transports viewers into the breezy New England where secrets hide in every corner of the Sinclair estate.
Centering on the mystery of how eldest grandchild and heir to the Sinclair fortune, Cadence Sinclair, was left for dead the previous summer, “We Were Liars” straddles two pivotal summers for Cadence, with one filled with lively summer parties to the tune of “Numb” by Marshmello & Khalid or “Young Dumb” by Noisy, while the other takes a more somber outlook with the help of Hozier.

The Forrest Gump soundtrack features iconic songs from a wide variety of music artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The movie chronicles the life of the title character, a warm-hearted man from Alabama who takes a tour of 20th-century American history. Throughout his travels, he fights in the Vietnam War, meets a handful of U.S. presidents, invests in Apple on the ground level, and exposes the Watergate scandal. Along the way, Forrest Gump uses needle drops on its soundtrack to reflect the changing times.
Some songs on the Forrest Gump soundtrack are used to establish the period setting, like Jimi Hendrix and Buffalo Springfield underscoring scenes of the Vietnam War, while others are more integral to the plot, such as when Elvis sings one of his biggest hits to show off the dance moves he learned from Forrest. The soundtrack of Forrest Gump was a...

It wouldn’t be “The Umbrella Academy” without a soundtrack full of excellent needle drops, and Season 4 is no exception. The final season of Netflix’s superhero comic adaptation has just six episodes to wrap up the wild world of the Hargreeves siblings and their many apocalypses, but the short episode count doesn’t hold it back from dropping catchy song after the next — including one of the world’s most earworm-y songs of all time, “Baby Shark.”
This season’s soundtrack is also a little different because the episodes take place during the holiday season, meaning there are a handful of Christmas classics in the mix as well, from “Santa Baby” to “Carol of the Bells.” They even got the always-coveted rights to a Cher song.

In the four seasons of The Umbrella Academy, one scene stands alone. In the pilot episode, the dysfunctional Hargreeves siblings return home and immediately devolve into discord. Then Luther (Tom Hopper) puts on a record.
The opening beats of Tiffany’s ’80s bop “I Think We’re Alone Now” resound through the mansion’s halls, then the sulking Hargreeves siblings engage in an epic dance-off. Four seasons later, creator Steve Blackman references that joyful, fan-favorite scene in the final chapter of the series. This time it was the original 1967 Tommy James and the Shondells version.
“I wanted to come full circle with that song and just play it to remind the audience of how we began,” Blackman tells Tudum. “I think [the song] spoke in the pilot: ‘I think we’re alone now.’ They’re so not alone, they’re in the same house, but I thought it represented emotionally that they felt...

If the Britpop movement of the 1990s was defined by its brash celebration of authenticity, anti-commercialism, and, well, Britishness, the hyperpop movement of the 2010s was almost the total inverse. Characterized by heavy audio manipulation, cartoonishly catchy pop hooks, and gleefully artificial alter egos, the music released on A.G. Cook’s PC Music label openly embraced synthetic sounds and consumerist aesthetics. The title of Cook’s third album, Britpop, places these two movements in conversation with one another.
All music exists as a response to something that came before. Case in point: Britpop developed in the wake of the U.S. grunge explosion, which itself was a reaction to the extravagance of hair metal. That sort of push and pull is something that Cook has played with before—most notably on his 2020 cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’s “Crimson and Clover,” which Cook reimagined with massive saw synths and fuzzed-out guitars.

While many could argue that Netflix's quality has decreased in recent years, there's no doubt that the streaming service has produced several shows that have become cultural staples in television. Netflix has been behind several of the best shows in the last decade, such as Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy, and Sex Education.
All these shows have excellent character development, engaging plots, and fantastic music in common. A show with a good soundtrack will carefully select the music to take pivotal scenes to the next level, and Netflix is known for making some of the most iconic musical selections from recent years.

Miranda Lambert has released another track off her upcoming album Palomino, ahead of its April 29 drop date. “Actin’ Up” is a swaggering slice of woozy country-rock, with Lambert dropping a wealth of pop-culture references in the lyrics.

Turns out Pippa Middleton wasn’t the only person to have her long-awaited wedding this weekend. It’s been nearly two years since DJ, entrepreneur, and fitness guru Hannah Bronfman, 29, got engaged to fellow DJ Brendan Fallis, 37. And this weekend, the pair finally tied the knot in style in gorgeous Morocco.
Of course, finding the perfect setting for their nuptials was a high priority, so the couple took their time before nailing down just the right fit, eventually landing on La Mamounia, a stunning palatial hotel in Marrakech. “We considered many places before deciding on Marrakech,” Bronfman told Brides about the May 20 wedding.

It’s been eight long years since the Statue of Liberty’s head barreled down one of New York’s steel canyons in Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield. And in those eight years there have been whispers, rumors, and innuendo about a sequel.
While it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for a legit Part 2, J.J. Abrams has at least gifted us with a teaser trailer for something called 10 Cloverfield Drive, which the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director calls a “blood relative” to the hit found-footage Sci-Fi thriller. Being cagey as usual, Abrams told Collider.com, “The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
Now, what “blood relative” means is up for debate, but what we do...

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

From reenactments to breaching sharks to water that’s just a little too still, Discovery’s Shark Week has certain sights we can count on after years of attentive viewing, making it the perfect television event to drink to. (You know, because nothing speaks to the beauty and awe of nature quite like alcohol does…)
Sure, you could drink every time a shark appears on screen, but we’re going for something slightly more ambitious. Bring your 21+ self and can-do attitude, and get ready to play Entertainment Weekly’s ultimate Shark Week drinking game. Proceed with caution, or not at all.

Something's cooking on "The Simpsons" for this Sunday's episode, and it smells pretty bad -- "Breaking Bad," that is. "The Simpsons" meet "Breaking Bad" in this week's upcoming episode of the long-running Fox show. In place of the usual couch gag during the opening credits, Homer and company take on the identities of the hit AMC drama, with the approval of "Bad" stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. Marge makes the special blue cupcakes while Tommy James and the Shondell's "Crystal Blue Persuasion" (ha ha) plays over the soundtrack. She pushes them to kids at a church picnic, while Bart brings a batch to school in a steel briefcase. Homer appears as a lazier Heisenberg. It all culminates with live-action footage...

Ward's gown was by Carolina Herrera and the groom went for a white tuxedo jacket and black pants. Also according to the Keys' rep, the bride walked down the aisle to Tommy James & the Shondells' "Crimson and...

Back in 1998, at the Ifp Film Market, Thomas Ethan Harris, then the director of the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, strongly recommended an unknown film called Aberdeen. I followed his advice and was startled. Where most of the market films were by-the-book attempts to replicate commercial formulas, Aberdeen was a distinctive comic vision that followed none of the rules and managed to weave together wild abstraction and documentary observation as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
I assumed I'd hear about Aberdeen soon, but I never did. I don't know what adventures the film had after the Ifp market, but it never received a public screening, and no one but me (and the vigilant Mr. Harris, whom I never saw again) seemed to know anything about it. Good films often fall through the cracks, but this was an extreme case.

My most vivid childhood memory of my dad involves his obsession with classic rock. If there was music on the car radio while we lived in California during the late ’80s, you better believe a DJ at K-Earth 101 FM was serving it up. My dad lost his blessed mind every time they spun “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” a psychedelic slow-jam from 1969 by Tommy James and The Shondells. Singing along wasn’t enough; he compulsively slapped his fingers, tabla-style, on the steering wheel of his ’78 Toyota Celica. The loose fit of the horn buttons in that car produced a pleasing...

This week's episode feature two songs from the artist "Kiss the Girl," including the appropriately titled "She Likes Girls." Outside of the obvious punny song choices, there were some other great tunes this week.

Val Kilmer is set to play another music great in a biopic about "Crimson & Clover" hitmaker Tommy James. The actor, who played Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's "The Doors", is in talks to portray James in a new film based on the singer's autobiography, "Me, The Mob And The Music".
In an interview aired on BlogTalkRadio on Friday, March 12, James claims his producer partners are keen to make a start on the film about his amazing life - and are hoping to release it by the end of 2011. He says, "We'll be making a major announcement in about three weeks."
"One of the actors who's being looked at seriously to play me is Val Kilmer. He's very musical and of course he can act and do anything. But probably, because of the huge time span of the book - which starts in the 60s and ends in the 90s,...

“Sopranos” creator David Chase is making his directorial debut on an untitled feature film, and it’s not about the Mafia.
According to Deadline, he’s planning a late summer/early fall start date for his first film based on a script he wrote. It’s a drama about “a bunch of guys who form a rock back in the 60’s.” Chase once worked as a drummer in several bands during the 60’s and had aspirations of becoming a professional musician.
It’s unclear what the story is based on, but a few speculated in the comments section of that website that it could be a Tommy James story titled “Me, the Mob, and the Music,” which would at least return Chase partially to the world of organized crime. Unless one of them is Tony Soprano, it is still a bit of a let down for fans of the HBO series,...

A music video to support Prince's new single "Crimson and Clover" has been made available to watch. It mostly captures several women in silhouette while they are dancing to the beat of the song.
"Crimson and Clover" is included in Prince's three-disc album "LOtUSFLOW3R", which has been in stores since March. The track actually is a cover version of Tommy James & the Shondells' 1960s hit single of the same name.
"LOtUSFLOW3R" itself is Prince's twenty fifth studio record and a follow up to his 2007 effort "Planet Earth". The album's first disc titled "LOTUSFLOW3R" contains psychedelic, soul, rock materials, while the second one called "MPLSoUND" carries Funk, R&B songs. As for the last disc, it is a collaborative collection between Prince and his protege Bria Valente and is entitled "Elixer".
