Arrow Video’s August line-up turns up the heat with six distinct genre restorations landing on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. The month kicks off with the brutal origins of a horror icon in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning before moving through the dusty final stand of a Hollywood legend in The Shootist, high-octane gang warfare in Enemy Territory, James Caan’s debut triumph Thief, Jennifer Reeder’s twisted coming-of-age shocker Perpetrator, and Wolfgang Petersen’s epic disaster thriller Poseidon.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning arrives on 25 August in Limited Edition 4K Uhd, unearthing the Hewitt clan’s backstory in both its theatrical cut and an extended Uncut Version for the first time on 4K disc. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes prequel recreates the grotesque birth of Leatherface and his kin in lurid fashion. A reversible sleeve, poster and collector’s booklet complete this collector’s package.

No matter how you may feel about the ending of "How I Met Your Mother," there's no questioning the show had a successful nine-season run, and that most of it is infinitely rewatchable even more than a decade after it aired its final episode. The same, however, cannot be said about "How I Met Your Father," the sequel series that abruptly ended after just two seasons and 30 episodes on Hulu. Despite sharing a lot of similarities with the original series, it just didn't connect with audiences in the same way. But when it came to the official reason why "How I Met Your Father" was canceled, it all came down to the usual corporate jargon from streaming companies.
A report from Deadline confirmed in September 2023 that "How I Met Your Father" got the axe on account of "companywide streaming content cuts" at Hulu's parent company, Disney. The story didn't delve further into the specifics,...

Exclusive: Christopher Lowell (Promising Young Woman), Jeanine Mason (Upload), and Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride) have wrapped on the Colorado production of The Man Who Changed the World, a drama spanning generations that’s inspired by the story of visionary entrepreneur Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker.
In the film directed by Greg Pritikin (The Last Laugh), Lowell and Mason play a young couple navigating the trials of marriage, parenthood, and personal legacy. Shawn co-stars as legendary futurist and systems theorist Buckminster Fuller, the architect of the geodesic dome, whose philosophies echo through the picture. The story spans the 1940s, 1960s, and present day, with Illeana Douglas (Goodfellas), Fred Stoller (Everybody Loves Raymond), Ted Lange (The Love Boat), and Matt Wood (Saturday Night) rounding out the cast.

Although the television medium has produced a variety of long-running series, not every show that graces TV screens can have long-term success. Television shows often suffer from weak writing, characterization or circumstances outside their control, reducing many series with major potential to a footnote in the pop culture zeitgeist.
That said, while there are plenty of subpar TV shows that remain exactly that from beginning to end, there are some series that, despite some rough spots, redeem themselves with surprisingly noteworthy endings. Whether their endings are great because they cleanly wrap up important narratives, result in major changes to a beloved character, or even set up the events of other related TV shows & films, these otherwise weak series are worthy of watching just for their finales.

Quick Links Kristen Bell's Career-Defining Crime Mystery Hit Taylor Sheridan Flexes His Acting Chops in 'Veronica Mars'
Taylor Sheridan has steadily become a powerful titan in Hollywood, with the brilliant director, writer, and producer being the mastermind behind a slew of small-screen knockouts, including Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Lioness. It’s that time of year for the Dahls, the close-knit Christian family at the center of Leslye Headland’s bleak and biting new play Cult of Love. Christmas is their favorite holiday, an occasion for the four adult children (plus their spouses) to convene at the elder Dahls’ house and imbibe on batch Manhattans, gorge on dense confectionaries, stow away extra figgy pudding and sing carols exalting their Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
No matter that a handful of the Dahls are having a crisis of faith, that one might be losing their memory, that another is in active recovery from drug addiction and a third might be buckling under the weight of their mental health issues. The Dahls, in service of their own self-image, prefer to lie and deny.

Alyson Hannigan starred in How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons and is ready for a new spinoff.
In a new interview, the American Pie alum revealed she had an idea for a reboot that would focus on Jason Segel’s character, Marshall Eriksen.
“It’s like, ‘No, no, no, no kids. That’s not how it happened,'” Hannigan told People. “And then it starts out with, ‘We were a lot older, first of all …’ and then we can just do the show again.”
Hannigan played Lily Aldrin, the character who eventually marries Segel’s Marshall. The CBS sitcom, which premiered in 2005, followed Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as he tells his kids the story of how he met their mother. Bob Saget narrated the series throughout its run as older Ted.

Compelling TV detectives should be more than just great sleuths. Subverting character archetypes can make a detective more interesting to watch. A great TV detective needs excellent writing and an actor who connects with the character.
Detectives are often among the most compelling characters on TV, and the best ones are worth rewatching even after their cases are closed. Detective shows are reliable sources of drama because of the inherent high stakes of police work and the intriguing mysteries that often come with the crime genre. Great TV detectives shouldn't just be good at their jobs, they should have an interesting way of working that makes them fun to watch. In fact, a detective with some flaw that hinders their investigation can be just as fascinating.

With the unfortunate cancellation of How I Met Your Father after only two seasons, we’ve not only had to say goodbye to one of the few streaming comedies that feels like a true sitcom, but now we’ll likely never know who the titular father actually is. The series’ predecessor How I Met Your Mother took eight seasons to finally reveal the identity of the mother, and while it’s hard to believe that Himyf would have lasted that long anyway in the streaming era, it’s still sad that we won’t have the chance to see Sophie (Hilary Duff) find love the way Ted (Josh Radnor) did.
But just because Himym took so long to introduce the mother, doesn’t mean that we haven’t already met the father of Sophie’s child. The pilot episode even says that Sophie met the father the night of Sid...

The viral rumor claiming that Sid is the father in 'How I Met Your Father' makes no sense because the show never hinted at any romantic connection between Sid and Sophie. The show's creators wouldn't have taken the risk of not dropping hints about the father's identity in the first two seasons, indicating that Sid being the father seems out of left field. Other characters like Jesse or Ian would make much more sense as the father, as they had stronger romantic connections with Sophie throughout the series. Sid is almost certainly not the father.

At the end of the second and now final season, Duff’s character revealed who the father of her child was. The finale landed July 11.

Hulu is dropping another one of its series, canceling How I Met Your Father after two seasons.
The news comes two days after the Disney-run streamer canceled The Great. How I Met Your Father, which stars Hilary Duff, ended its second season in July and did not answer the implied question in its title.
How I Met Your Father is a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, which ran on CBS from 2005-14. Though not a direct sequel, it’s set in the same version of New York as the original series and has featured guest appearances from Himym stars Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris, among other alumni of that show. Characters played by Christopher Lowell and Suraj Sharma also live in the apartment occupied by Ted (Josh Radnor) and Marshall (Jason Segel) in the former series.

Four years after exploring the interwoven horrors of adolescence and parenthood in the bold neo-noir Knives and Skin (the film's solemn cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" is still one of the most memorable scenes I've watched in the past decade), filmmaker Jennifer Reeder returns to the haunted halls of high school to expose more societal injustices, toxic masculinity, and timely anxieties in Perpetrator.
Centered on teenager Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan), who is teetering on the verge of adulthood as she grapples with her unique shapeshifting ability with a little unconventional help from her stern-yet-caring Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone), Perpetrator is now streaming on Shudder and playing theatrically in New York.
To celebrate the release of the latest "coming-of-rage" movie in Jennifer Reeder's impressive filmography, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with the director in a new video interview to discuss the origin of Perpetrator,...

“How I Met Your Father” has been canceled after two seasons at Hulu, Variety has confirmed.
The Hilary Duff-led “How I Met Your Mother” spinoff concluded its second (and now final) season July 11 without revealing who Duff’s character, Sophie, ended up having a child with. The show debuted in January 2022 and aired 30 episodes overall.
Here’s the comedy’s synopsis: “In the near future, Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the present where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.”

Poor performances and an overly ambitious script hold back Jennifer Reeder's Perpetrator from reaching its full potential. While there are some effective horror moments and a mysterious plot, the film lacks consistency and fails to fully develop its villains. Despite its supernatural, feminist themes, and promising young talent, Perpetrator ultimately suffers from uneven acting and a lack of focus in its storytelling.
Editor’s note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn't exist.
Jennifer Reeder’s Perpetrator has some fun ideas but is held back by poor performances and a script that is juggling too much. The writer-director has a particular vision for the world she is building and there are aspects of it that really work. Another cut of this film would have probably been better.

Growing up is tough. Perhaps it's a bit trickier if you're a descendant of witches. But on a universal level, turning the age 18 is a big milestone, and for the rebellious teen at the center of writer-director Jennifer Reeder's new film Perpetrator, the big birthday comes with more than just well wishes. The end result is a blood-soaked psychological thriller that's sometimes a slow burn but still weaves in some occasional dark humor; the absurd society that serves as the film's setting will surely come off as satirical.
Perpetrator is a dark tale that's not for everyone, but you just might see an angsty, younger version of yourself in the film's protagonist as she navigates a new school and a creepy extended family. And speaking of, who doesn't love a dark turn by "Cher" herself, aka Ms. Alicia Silverstone? Here's our take.

A teenager who develops supernatural powers upon coming of age is a pretty common plot device in genre fiction, from vampire and werewolf stories to Marvel's mutants, but writer-director Jennifer Reeder puts a unique artistic spin on it in Perpetrator. The essential elements of the plot involve 18-year-old Jonny (Kiah McKirnan) discovering her newfound powers and using them to take down a villain who's been abducting, torturing, and murdering teenage girls in the town where she lives. Nothing about Perpetrator is that straightforward, though, and Reeder creates a dreamlike world in which superheroes and serial killers are defined by poetic, ineffable longing as much as by power and violence.
The mannered, arch tone of Perpetrator may be off-putting to genre fans at first, but Reeder drops the audience right into her surreal vision. The opening scene features a point-of-view shot from inside a killer's mask as the mysterious figure stalks...

Writer-director Jennifer Reeder’s Perpetrator cycles through characters and settings at a considerable clip, never stopping long enough to flesh them out beyond an outline. First, in a pre-credits teaser, a masked serial killer abducts a girl walking alone at night. The film then cuts to protagonist Jonny (Kiah McKirnan) breaking into a house before fencing the stolen goods for rent money that she gives to her ailing father (Tim Hopper).
Across this opening stretch of the film, the audience watches Jonny in this setting just long enough to sense her ennui—that she’s desperate to flee her dead-end life. Soon enough, she’s on a train and getting out of Dodge, on her way to live with her aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone). And it’s then that she starts to develop strange abilities that directly channel the feelings of the people around her—as well as those of...

Lately, when Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan) looks in the mirror, she doesn’t even recognize herself… because her face is morphing into someone else. But, as Jonny’s enigmatic Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone) reminds her, this is just one of the side effects of Jonny celebrating her recent 18th birthday and receiving the unconventional gift of Forevering, a family spell that gives Jonny the unique ability of extreme empathy that allows her to tap into the emotions of those around her—a power that’s also wielded by both Aunt Hildie and Jonny’s mother, who disappeared out of Jonny’s life long ago. As Jonny gets used to her new high school run by the misogynistic Principal Burke (Christopher Lowell), she learns that being bestowed with Forevering is both a blessing and a curse, but it just might be the only thing that can stop a masked killer who...

Jennifer Reeder's "Perpetrator" is a spiritual successor to 2019's John Waters-y, super-sensory-heightened debut "Knives and Skin," serving vibes as a main course. That's not entirely a damning accusation. Reeder's style provokes delirium and allows her characters to float through hallucinogenic universes, which the filmmaker somehow controls. "Perpetrator" feels indebted to everything from high school humor in "Clueless" to body horror yuckiness in "Society" to uniquely pubescent terror in "Teeth" — a tonal collision that some won't survive, and others will slurp down like Four Lokos at an underage pregame.

How I Met Your Father returns after a mid-season hiatus on Tuesday, May 23 on Hulu, and last we saw the gang, Sophie (Hilary Duff), after a run-in with Himym‘s Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and thinking she might be dating her dad (John Corbett), has decided to find her father. “I don’t think that she would’ve ever found her father. I don’t think there’s that many people in her life that were pushing her to do that,” Duff told TV Insider. “The Neil thing was, in perfect Isaac [Aptaker] and Elizabeth [Berger, executive producers] fashion, so funny, but so real and it provided growth for his character that no one saw, to know that he went along through his life to do the work and had some really lovely things happen to him like a daughter and tried to get rid of some of the predatory vibes of his past.

In our Q&A series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, "How I Met Your Father" star Francia Raisa takes our call.
Francia Raisa has "zero clue" who the titular father is on "How I Met Your Father." But even if she did, her lips are sealed. "I do not think they will ever tell me, because I keep trying to figure it out," Raisa tells Popsugar. "At this point, I'm so confused, because even though I'm on the show, there are things that I don't even catch until it airs. I'm like, 'Wait a second, she said she kissed all of her friends. What does that mean?' And I didn't even hear that line until it aired."

One character won't appear in How I Met Your Father anytime soon, but the show is preparing to introduce a new love interest instead. One of the big threads early on Himyf season 2 sees Jesse (Christopher Lowell) settling back into a relationship with Meredith (Gossip Girl alum Leighton Meester), who has appeared in nine episodes of the series. As their reunion deteriorates, Jesse realizes they aren't a good fit together.
According to TVLine, Meester isn't expected to reprise her role as Meredith for the foreseeable future. In the quote below, Rath sheds some light on the character she'll be portraying:

Spoilers for How I Met Your Father season 2Sid and Hannah's future on How I Met Your Father is addressed by the showrunners. As it went into the midseason break, How I Met Your Father was fairly light on the relationship drama for its lead character, Sophie (Hilary Duff), as she focused more on finding her biological dad.
