“For nearly 35 years, I’ve followed a creative path guided by instinct — each album, each tour, each project a new chapter in a story I’ve felt compelled to tell,” said Townsend in the video. “My mind latches on to concepts, and I love chasing them down. That chase has made this journey wild, unpredictable, and deeply fulfilling.”

He continued, “Over the years, I’ve heard it countless times: ‘Dev, take a break… please.’ But the flood of ideas, the excitement, and the support of incredible musicians and listeners have kept me going, kept me touring, and...

Devin Townsend Announces New Album PowerNerd, Unveils Title Track Featuring Jamey Jasta: Stream
Image
Devin Townsend has announced a new album titled PowerNerd, while also unveiling its title track featuring guest vocals from Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta. The 11-song LP is set for release on October 25th.

Over the past 30 years, Townsend has built a legendary career as a solo artist and as frontman of Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Project, among other projects. A press release describes PowerNerd as the start of the veteran musician’s “newest era.”

In defining the album’s title, Townsend stated, “I would say that a powernerd would be somebody that has a tendency that society has deemed weak or not valuable, whether that’s empathy or being an insular person or an introvert, and turns that into a type of personal power. It’s like, ‘Ok, yeah, I’m sensitive to this, that and the other thing, but man, I am going to pull through!

Myles Kennedy Announces New Album and 2024-2025 Tour, Unveils “Say What You Will”: Stream
Image
Myles Kennedy has announced a new solo album, The Art of Letting Go, arriving October 11th. The singer-guitarist — best known as the lead vocalist in both Alter Bridge and Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators — also offered up the video for the lead single “Say What You Will.”

The track is a driving hard rocker that verges on glam metal, with a lowdown groove riff and a gritty vocal from Kennedy. He and his bandmates (Zia Uddin on drums and Tim Tournier on bass) also appear in the School of Rock-style video clip, playing the role of middle-school faculty members who encourage a timid student to perform a rock set at the talent show.

Kennedy appears to be ramping up his solo activity now that his bandmates in Alter Bridge are busy with the current Creed reunion. The singer is set to support...

Dream Theater Keyboardist Jordan Rudess Releases New Song “Embers”: Stream
Image
Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess has unveiled a new solo single, “Embers,” that was made in collaboration with the Moises AI platform.

Rudess composed “Embers” specifically for the Moises Jam Sessions contest, illustrating how the AI platform can help improve musical workflow.

“The inspiration for creating this track coincided with a project I was asked to do for the app, Moises, a technology that can turn standard audio files into separate tracks while also showing chords, lyrics and more,” stated Rudess in a press release.

The song will also be included on Rudess’ forthcoming solo album — due out later in 2024 — and the piece very much stands on its own outside of any tie-ins to the AI app.

Dream Theater fans will recognize Rudess’ innate ability to layer myriad musical textures, guiding the mellow four-minute song with sweeping major chords and uplifting melodies. Accompanying Rudess on the track is drummer Darby Todd,...

The Friday The 13th Soundtrack Song Power Rankings
Image
With yet another Friday the 13th upon us, it’s high time to dig into a now fairly-outmoded Hollywood practice, the synergistic soundtrack album, as it pertains to Camp Blood’s least favorite son. Today, we celebrate the Friday The 13th franchise by making a playlist of its top soundtrack slices.

As a series, Friday The 13th has run the musical gamut, kicking off at the tail end of disco (as the opening theme music of Friday The 13th Part III can attest), peaking during the hair metal ’80s, and then quite thoroughly exploring a renaissance in metal at the start of the 21st century.

Is this list solely a product of the personal taste of this horror and metal fan? Of course. As such, you’ll notice that Hot Ice does not make the cut. Several of the top entries in this list did not even occupy any pre-end credits screen time,...

Tempel: 'On the Steps of the Temple' – Album Review
Devin Townsend
Phoenix, Arizona-based instrumental duo Tempel have been composing strange, vast and ominous soundscapes for over a decade, but this year finally brings the pair's first full-length album (three years in the making) to the ears of the world... and when it comes to haunting, doomy experimental metal, On the Steps of the Temple is epic as they come. The team of guitarist/keyboardist Ryan Wenzel and drummer Rich Corle have been compared with boundary-pushing “post-metal” legends Neurosis and experimental drone metallers Sunn O))) for their epic, sprawling canvases of heavy sonic doom, and the dark spectrum of sound that issues from these six new tracks is so massive, it's hard to believe it's the product of a two-piece band. Without the element of lyrics and vocals, a rock or metal album must find a different kind of voice, and Tempel accomplishes this by building layer upon layer of elaborate tonal...

Under Construction
The Gabriel Construct: Interior City (Gabriel Riccio)

Although my older brother likes some of Genesis' music, he does have one main bugaboo about them: that their songs are often "aimless," simply going from one section to another, seemingly at random. I disagree, of course: while it is true that many of their compositions have multiple sections, often introducing different musical motifs, most of those compositions follow the exposition-development-recapitulation form of some classical music, and almost always return to and resolve at least the initial motif, if not others.

However, given my older brother's feelings, I can assume that he would not like The Gabriel Construct (though I do -- with some reservations), the debut solo project from Gabriel Lucas Riccio.

In most of the ten compositions on Interior City -- particularly the lengthier ones -- Mr. Riccio actually does what my brother suggests about Genesis: haphazardly string unrelated sections of music together,...

Tear Out the Heart: 'Violence' – CD Review
Metalcore bands are embracing horror elements more often lately, and stylistically it makes sense: the artists tend to express anguish and fear through lyrics while purging anger with a barrage of ultra-violent riffs and rhythms, much in the same way a good horror story can alternate subtle, emotional chills with shocking violence. The mix of harsh-voiced verses with melodic chorus vocals has its share of outspoken detractors – many of whom just don't like mixing their metal flavors, which is understandable – but balance is key to making the whole thing work. Although they're recent additions to the field, St. Louis five-piece Tear Out the Heart carry off this balancing act fairly well in their first full-length album, appropriately titled Violence. Blending the song structures of straight rock and pop with deep, dark hardcore riffs and breakdowns, Tear Out the Heart fall closer to bands like the excellent Motionless in White, sharing...

World Premiere of Inkubus, Starring Robert Englund, William Forsythe, Headlines Rock and Shock 2011
If Rock and Shock 2011 doesn't get here soon Glenn Ciano is going to burst. Why is that, you ask? Because Glenn makes his feature film directorial debut with Inkubus, and the film will be having its world premiere this Saturday night at Rock and Shock 2011 in Worchester, Ma and he can't wait to unleash Inkubus on the unsuspecting world.

Headlining a film schedule that includes Chillerama at 5pm and I Am Nancy (introduced by Nancy herself, Heather Langenkamp) at 7pm Inkubus is slotted at the prime 9pm position and will be introduced by director Glenn Ciano and producer Chad A. Verdi.

"Inkubus is a hardcore old-school horror flick," Ciano said. "We want to get out there and deliver a movie to fans we feel they've been waiting 25 years for." And, following their Fans First philosophy (check out the logo for the concept below), The Lab (as Ciano's team calls themselves...

Ride Devin Townsend's Hell-Train in 'Juular'
Devin Townsend
A true renaissance man of epic metal, experimental music and grand-scale audio production, Devin Townsend – founder of legendary metal band Strapping Young Lad – has crossed into musical terrain very few musicians have dared to tread. You never know what to expect from him next, even when he maps out a four-album masterwork under the handle "The Devin Townsend Project." The records have ranged from mellow, ambient soundscapes to mountain-crushing metal and all the shades in between... and Deconstruction is heaviest and most bizarre of them all. "Juular," the new video from that album, should give you a pretty good idea of how completely insane this record is... so you need to hit the jump and check this one...

Listen Now: New Devin Townsend Project Song From Upcoming Album ‘Ghost’
A new song by The Devin Townsend Project entitled "Feather," from the upcoming release, Ghost, is now online. The album is anticipated to be out during Summer 2011. The tune is a big departure for Devin Townsend, mostly known for his work in the metal scene, and in the band, Strapping Young Lad. You can have a listen to "Feather," originally from a free Century Media sampler, in the video player below.

Ghost is the fourth release in a four-part series released by The Devin Townsend Project. The project was begun by Townsend in 2009 in an attempt to extend his musical identity and push the boundaries beyond the musical styles he has played with in the past. Unlike his previous solo efforts and his work with Strapping Young Lad, each album takes on a particular sound, style, and feel, encompassing the different aspects of his music.

The first album in the series,...
