He was born in Senegal and lived his childhood in several different African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso and Chad. After that, João Pires moved to Europe and became a painter and an artist in Viena, Ljubljana and other cities in central Europe. Presently he lives in Trnava, in western Slovakia.
