Spider-Man Actresses Who Aced Tennis Roles In Surprising Films: Did You Notice The Pattern?
Image
Spider-Man Actresses Playing Tennis(Photo Credit –Facebook/Instagram)

Hollywood casting has a way of weaving together unexpected connections. But here’s a fun one—every actress who’s played Spider-Man’s love interest has ended up on a tennis court, at least on screen. Call it a coincidence or just a weird industry pattern, but Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Zendaya have all taken a swing at playing tennis players in films.

Kirsten Dunst was the foremost to stroll onto the tennis court. After playing Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, she starred in Wimbledon (2004). The actress played Lizzie Bradbury. She is a rising tennis star, who falls for a struggling pro (played by Paul Bettany). It wasn’t just a casual sports flick—Dunst actually trained to make her moves look legit.

In 2017, Emma Stone played tennis icon Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes.

'Challengers' Deserved More Oscar Nominations Over 'Emilia Pérez'
Image
Quick Links The Technical Category Snubs Are Embarrassing for the Academy The 2025 Best Picture Nominations

Ever since I was a teenager, I have woken up early to see the Oscar nominations announced. Every other day, it's nearly impossible to get me out of bed before 7 am, but the day the Academy Award nominations are announced, I'm like a kid on Christmas morning. So, on Jan. 23, 2025, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter, away to my phone flew like a flash to what nominations had just come to pass.

I had already prepared myself that some movies that I personally would have nominated were not going to happen, since that would require members of the Academy to remember movies that came out before October and also see movies that maybe didn't have the budget to campaign and send screeners and would require them to sign in to...

Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor in Challengers (2024)

Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor in Challengers (2024)
Do you ever find that you look at lists of awards-nominated films and you just cannot figure out why some films are there? If so, don’t worry. So, from time to time, do seasoned critics.

To be fair, some people just don’t like sports films. I am not one of those people. In my experience, a well-made sports film will be thrilling to watch even if you’ve never cared for the sport in question, just as a good erotic romance will set your heart thumping even if you don’t feel the least desire for its stars. Challengers is neither. Director Luca Guadagnino reportedly brought in former world number four and accomplished coach Brad Gilbert as an advisor, and tennis enthusiasts assure me that it accurately recreates the experience of training and travelling around between tournaments. Accuracy is not everything, however, and it is not always enough.

Tennis Maestro Brad Gilbert on Making ‘Challengers’ a Phenomenon on and Off the Court
Image
On December 5, the IndieWire Honors Winter 2024 ceremony will celebrate the creators and stars responsible for crafting some of the year’s best films. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, IndieWire Honors is a celebration of the filmmakers, artisans, and performers behind films well worth toasting. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.

Ahead, tennis icon Brad Gilbert tells IndieWire how his unforgettable collaboration with this year’s Impact Award winners — Luca Guadagnino, Justin Kuritzkes, Amy Pascal, and Rachel O’Connor — helped turn the movie into a global phenomenon.

I was really happy with the work that Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor, and Zendaya put in to make their characters come to fruition on “Challengers.” They put in the work, and it was a great experience with all of them. And Luca’s vision! Tennis for all of them wasn’t something that was really on their radar.

Image
“I’ll tell you the moment I knew that Luca [Guadagnino] was the perfect director for this,” Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes said. “He had just read the script and we were talking on the phone and Luca said, ‘I know next to nothing about tennis but I know a great deal about desire.’”

At a panel for Challengers at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, Kuritzkes was joined by director Luca Gudagnino, producer Amy Pascal and actor Josh O’Connor.

“What I loved about the script so much, is that it’s about three people who desperately don’t want something to happen. And they spend three years fearing that this will happen, and then it does… and they’re okay,” says Pascal. “And I think that’s really wonderful, unusual thing to make a movie about, because it’s...

When You Give a Ball a Camera: How ‘Challengers’ VFX Team Created Tennis Pov Scene
Image
In Luca Guadagnino’s tennis thriller Challengers, stars Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor litigate their love triangle as much on the court as in the bedroom. As such, the sport has to stay interesting.

Guadagnino previously told Little White Lies he doesn’t like watching real tennis because it’s boring. “The way in which [the sport] is shown is rather undynamic,” he said. Challengers — punctuated by the camera’s near-constant frenetic motion — seems to be in part about rectifying this failing.

“Luca’s vision for this movie was making the tennis action generally very kinetic,” Challengers VFX director Brian Drewes tells The Hollywood Reporter. The camera sweeps above and below the court, jumping toward the subjects’ beautifully sweaty faces and buzzing with an immersive energy that took the internet and critics by storm upon the movie’s release. This kineticism reaches its peak at the end of the film, when the camera becomes the ball,...

Sarah Silverman Retired Her Formative ‘Arrogant Ignorant’ Character After Trump Rise

Sarah Silverman appeared on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast this week and took the opportunity to reflect on why she dropped her formative “Sarah Silverman” character amid the political rise of Donald Trump. She explained she decided to move on from the “arrogant ignorant” character she previously embodied for more complex reasons than audiences “not laughing at my racist jokes anymore.”

“It wasn’t really a conscious, ‘Hey, that stuff doesn’t work, so I’m going to go a different way,'” Silverman told Duchovny. “I think I just very naturally started changing.

Did Zendaya & Her Co-Stars Really Play Tennis For Challengers?
Image
Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor were all trained by Olympic bronze medalist and former tennis champion Brad Gilbert for Challengers, impressing viewers with their on-screen tennis skills. While Mike Faist played tennis in high school, neither Zendaya nor Josh O'Connor had played tennis before Challengers. Brad Gilbert spent the most time training with Zendaya for a total of three months.

Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor are all such naturals onscreen in Challengers, their convincing performances have prompted curiosity about whether they're actually playing tennis in the romantic sports drama. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, Challengers enters the world of professional tennis through a heated love triangle between Zendaya's Tashi Duncan, her husband Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and his ex-best friend and Tashi's ex-boyfriend Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor). Although Challengers is not based on a true story, Kuritzkes was inspired by the controversial championship...

During a recent interview, the actress revealed that she devised a very unique plan to perfectly play the role of a tennis pro.

“The Spider-Man to Tennis pipeline is something serious”: Zendaya, Emma Stone and Kirsten Dunst Are Part of a Crazy Coincidence After Starring in Spider-Man Movies
Image
Hollywood casting can be a fickle thing. But for actresses who’ve graced the silver screen as Spider-Man’s love interest, there seems to be a recurring theme – a hidden talent for tennis!

A still from Spider-Man

Believe it or not, all three actresses—Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Zendaya—who have portrayed Spider-Man’s love interest on the big screen share a surprising connection to the world of tennis.

It’s not merely a coincidence; each of them has actually portrayed a tennis player in different movies, following their roles in Spider-Man flicks.

Spider-Man Actresses Have Unexpected Tennis Connection

The first connection in this web of coincidence takes us back to 2004’s romantic comedy Wimbledon. Kirsten Dunst, who famously portrayed Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy, took on the role of Lizzie Bradbury, a determined young tennis player on the verge of success.

Challengers: It’s Love-Love for Zendaya on the tennis courts in the new trailer
Image
As Zendaya walks the red carpet at Dune Part 2 with an outfit that resembles the Metropolis robot as a dominatrix, you can catch her in the trailer for the newest drama from Amazon MGM Studios, Challengers. The trailer reels you in with the dynamic of Zendaya’s tennis pro taking on two male protégés as they, too, embark on their professional tennis careers. Things get hot and heavy (then complicated) when Zendaya’s character entangles herself with both men. MGM has released the new trailer with a few new images that, interestingly, all involve a side two-shot of characters in conversation.

The official synopsis from MGM reads,

“From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist...

‘Challengers’ New Trailer: Zendaya Toys with Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor in Luca Guadagnino’s Tennis Love Triangle
Image
Zendaya is game, set, match for Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.”

The tennis-centric drama follows Zendaya’s Tashi Duncan, a once-promising tennis prodigy whose knee injury puts her out of the game for good. However, Tashi isn’t one to shy away from a challenge: She steps in to coach husband Art (Mike Faist) and ex Patrick (Josh O’Connor), playing them off each other. Years later, though, she’s once again torn between the duo even after Patrick re-enters her and Art’s married life.

Guadagnino directs the film from a script penned by Justin Kuritzkes. Lead star Zendaya produces “Challengers,” along with Guadagnino, Amy Pascal, and Rachel O’Connor. Bernard Bellew, Lorenzo Mieli, and Kevin Ulrich executive produce.

Director Guadagnino revealed that the cast trained for three months with former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert, who served as a consultant on the film. The cast spent two to three hours playing tennis six days a week,...

Mike Faist Says ‘Challengers’ Co-Star Josh O’Connor ‘Physically Transformed’ for Role
Image
Josh O’Connor became a beast while filming Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.” The sexually-charged drama centered in the world of professional tennis stars O’Connor and Mike Faist as Zendaya’s two love interests over the course of a decade.

Faist told GQ that O’Connor was dedicated to physically transforming into the role of a tennis pro. “I watched this guy probably put on close to 10 pounds over the course of the weeks we were working,” Faist said. “He physically transformed. He’s a craftsman, and knew exactly what was required of him in the moment.”

The cast spent two to three hours playing tennis six days a week for three months with former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert, who served as a consultant on the film. The cast then spent an additional two hours at the gym daily post-practice and before rehearsals.

“If left to my own devices, I...

A Guide to ESPN's Chaotic Team of Tennis Commentators
Image
ESPN's coverage of the 2023 U.S. Open tennis championships kicks off on August 28, marking the cable network’s ninth year as the exclusive TV home of the Open. While professional tennis remains a comparatively niche sport in the U.S. when compared to the likes of pro-football or pro-basketball, it is a niche that is rife with fascinating personalities, grudges, conflicts of interest, and figures who are revered and others who elicit eye-rolls. That holds true for both the active players on the tour as well as those in the press booth. Hardcore tennis fans are familiar with these personalities and get a whole other level of enjoyment out of watching the matches as they call out the commentators' well-known biases, groan at the Brad Gilbert nicknames, and giggle as Pam Shriver's antics drive everyone else to distraction.

Josh O’Connor Says ‘Tennis Is the Sex’ in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’
Image
Luca Guadagnino’s real challenge: to make tennis sexy.

The “Challengers” director, according to his cast, emphasized the sensual physicality of the sport for the upcoming romantic drama. Emmy winner Zendaya plays tennis player-turned-coach Tashi who oversees her husband Art’s (Mike Faist) career, which leads them to crossing paths with Tashi’s ex-boyfriend (Josh O’Connor) and igniting a tense love triangle with queer undertones.

The trailer for “Challengers” already produced an iconic image of Zendaya, O’Connor, and Faist having a threesome.

As O’Connor teased to Empire magazine, “The tennis is the sex. Those moments are so sexy. The film is dealing with the tension before and after. The sex they’re all desperate for is on the court.”

Co-star Faist added that Guadagnino “had no knowledge of tennis” prior to the film, but that the sport itself was besides the point.

“I think he had only a...

Zendaya’s ‘Challengers’ Delayed to 2024: Everything You Need to Know
Image
Zendaya fans who were eagerly anticipating her new movie ‘Challengers’ will have to wait a bit longer, as the film has been delayed from its original September 15, 2023 release date to April 26, 2024. The reason for the postponement is the ongoing actors and writers strikes that have affected the film industry.

‘Challengers’ is a romantic sports comedy-drama directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. The film stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a tennis player-turned-coach who signs up her husband and Grand Slam champion Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) for a challenger event where he will face off against her former lover Patrick (Josh O’Connor). The film explores the rivalry and attraction between the three characters on and off the court.

Challengers Trailer

The film was set to premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival as the opening night film, but it was pulled from the event by MGM due to the labor disputes.

Challengers: Luca Guadagnino’s drama starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, & Mike Faist has been delayed to 2024
Image
The fallout from the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike makes its way to the tennis court as MGM‘s sports drama Challengers defaults to 2024. Luca Guadagnino’s R-rated film starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist was scheduled to open stateside on September 15 after its Venice Film Festival premiere. However, with the strike timeline uncertain, the film is moving to April 26, 2024. In addition to postponing the film’s release, the Venice premiere is no longer happening.

Part of the reason for the Challengers’ delay is that Zendaya, who has a 200M social media outreach, cannot promote the film during the strike. Her immense popularity on platforms like Instagram will inevitably boost the film’s visibility by tapping into the targeted demographic for the steamy sports drama. To put things into perspective, Challengers garnered 150M global views in its first 24 hours. Talk about the film ignited 320 stateside conversations after the trailer was the...

Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’ Exits Venice: Fest Will Open with ‘Comandante’ Instead
Image
The challenge of promoting “Challengers” during the SAG-AFTRA strike has upended its planned fall rollout.

Director Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” will no longer be making its world premiere for the opening night of the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The film, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, was previously announced to be screening out of competition August 30 to kick off the 80th annual festival.

Instead, the festival will open with “Comandante,” directed by Edoardo De Angelis, instead, the festival announced on Friday. “‘Challengers,’ the movie by Luca Guadagnino that had previously been announced, will not participate at the Festival following a decision made by the production,” Venice representatives said in a statement.

In a statement provided to IndieWire, Amazon said, “After thoughtful consideration with our partners, and given the parameters that SAG-AFTRA has outlined for its membership, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw ‘Challengers’ from this year’s Venice International Film Festival.

‘Challengers’ Trailer: Zendaya Is in a Game of Love with Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist

Zendaya is down at the tennis courts in Luca Guadagnino’s latest romance. In the film, the “Euphoria” Emmy winner plays tennis player-turned-coach Tashi who oversees her husband Art’s (Mike Faist) career. But when Art winds up on a losing streak, he is forced to play against his childhood best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend (Josh O’Connor), igniting a tense love triangle with queer undertones. The film is written by Justin Kuritzkes.

Director Guadagnino revealed that the cast trained for three months with former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert, who served as a consultant on the film. The “Bones and All” filmmaker added that Zendaya’s body double was not used in the final cut of the tennis scenes.

‘Challengers’ Trailer: Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist Star in Luca Guadagnino’s Sexy Tennis Love Triangle

Could Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film be a “love” story for the ages?

Guadagnino’s latest feature, “Challengers,” has finally released its first trailer, providing a highly anticipated look at Zendaya and Josh O’Connor in what’s being billed as a romantic sports comedy film.

Zendaya stars as pro tennis player Tashi opposite O’Connor and Mike Faist (“West Side Story”). “Challengers” follows Tashi and her husband, Art (Faist), as they reunite with a former rival, Patrick (O’Connor) — who also happens to be Tashi’s former lover and best friend. Berlin: Tennis Great Boris Becker’s Rise And Fall Documented In Alex Gibney-Directed Series; Champ Says, “I’ve Paid A Heavy Price”
Image
When tennis champion Boris Becker entered the room for a press conference in Berlin before the world premiere of the documentary about his storied career and troubled personal life, camera shutters clicked furiously and flashes flashed. He is, after all, one of Germany’s most famous native sons and a widely loved sports legend, despite a conviction for a bankruptcy-related fraud that landed him behind bars in Britain for eight months.

“I’m 55 years old and I’m very proud of the things that I’ve done. But I’ve made mistakes,” Becker told the assembled media at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday. “I’ve paid a heavy price for some of the things I did in my past. Today I’m a bit better for it. Hopefully a bit smarter. Maybe a bit more humble.”

Zendaya spent three months training to move like a tennis pro, and the two-time “Euphoria” Emmy winner is ready to compete in the U.S. Open according to “Challengers” director Luca Guadagnino.

The love-love dramedy stars Zendaya as a tennis player-turned-coach Tashi who oversees her husband Art’s (Mike Faist) career. But when Art winds up on a losing streak, he is forced to play against his childhood best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend, Patrick (Josh O’Connor), igniting a tense love triangle with queer undertones.

“They spent like three months working very hard,” Guadagnino told Variety of the trio of actors. “Everybody – technically, athletically.”

Former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert is a consultant on the film, working with Zendaya, O’Connor, and Faist to teach tennis.

“She’s wonderful,” Guadagnino said of Zendaya’s athleticism in the role. “I mean, wow. We edited the movie, and we almost actually don...

Zendaya Trained for Three Months to Play Tennis Player in ‘Challengers,’ Luca Guadagnino’s Upcoming ‘Sexy Comedy’
Image
Zendaya has conquered acting and singing, but now it sounds likes she’s going to impress us with her tennis skills.

The “Euphoria” star trained for months for her role as a tennis player-turned-coach in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film “Challengers.”

“She’s wonderful,” Guadagnino told Variety Saturday night at the Academy Museum Gala. “I mean, wow. We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.”

The film, which Guadagnino described as a “sexy comedy,” follows Zendaya’s character as a love triangle develops while coaches her player-husband (“West Side Story” actor Mike Faist) for his big match against her ex and his childhood best friend, played by Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”).

Production wrapped in June. Former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert is a consultant on the film.

“They spent like three months working very hard,” Guadagnino said of his leads.
