ESPN is digging into its past in a bid to spotlight its future.

The Disney-backed sports giant will, starting Thursday evening during ABC’s broadcast of the first game in the NBA Finals, give fans both a taste of its earliest days as well as a hint of what’s to come. An ESPN promo will feature footage of some of the first minutes shown on the cable network when it debuted in 1979. By the vignette’s end, however, ESPN will be highlighting its ability to interact with sports fans via mobile devices, and it will tout its ubiquity with game die-hards using a new catchphrase: “Sports Forever.”

John Brenkus, the founder and host of the Emmy-winning show Sport Science, has died at 54 following a battle with depression.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus had passed away,” a statement posted on Brenkus’ X page on Sunday read. “John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science had been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.

“His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”

Many of Brenkus’ friends responded to the news of his passing on the social media platform.

“Rip @johnbrenkus_,” ex-NFL defensive end Marcellus Wiley wrote on X.

In 2023, he opened up to Wiley about his mental health struggles during an interview.

John Brenkus, the TV producer and host of the Emmy-winning ESPN series Sports Science, died May 31, his family confirmed. He was 53.

The family, in a statement on the homepage of Brinkus’ Brinx.tv, said he had been battling depression, confirming that “John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31, 2025.”

They added: “His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”

Brenkus co-founded the production company Base Productions and was co-creator and host of Sports Science, which aired for two seasons on Fox Sports Network beginning in 2007 before shifting to ESPN.

The series, which used science and data to dissect the inner workings of athletes and their sports, was nominated for several Sports Emmys, winning in 2008 for Outstanding Graphic Design and in 2009 for Outstanding New Approaches Sports Programming and repeating for Graphic Design.

We have sad news to report from the world of sports media today.

John Brenkus — the journalist and TV personality best known for his Emmy-winning series Sport Science — has passed away unexpectedly.

He was just 54 years old.

News of Brenkus’ passing comes courtesy a statement from his family, who also shared details of his final days.

While no official cause of death has been revealed, Brenkus’ loved ones implied that he may have taken his own life.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away,” they wrote on Facebook, adding:

“John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression.

“Sport Science” originally ran from 2007 to 2009 and explored the science behind athletic endeavors. The first two seasons premiered in Fsn before the show moved to ESPN for its third season. Throughout its run, the series won multiple Sports Emmy Awards, including Outstanding New Approaches in Sports Programming. In addition to “Sport Science,” Brenkus a founder of Base Productions, which he co-founded with Mickey Stern, and he was the founder of Brinx TV.

Several notable names in the sports world reached out about Brenkus’ death.

The NFL released its full 2025-2026 football schedule for all 32 teams this week, and as is tradition, each of the teams released lighthearted videos to celebrate.

This year, the New York Giants did a Love Island parody while the Atlanta Falcons did a fun Mario Kart homage. Other videos included the Baltimore Ravens’ Severance-themed video and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Cash Cab remake.

Jax was allegedly part of a group that prank called quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders, telling him he would be drafted to the New Orleans Saints.

Jax allegedly got Shedeur‘s phone number from his dad’s iPad.

Many are calling for the NFL to take disciplinary action in some way, such as docking a draft pick, as the prank was viewed as cruel due to Shedeur dropping in the draft. He did not end up being selected until the fifth round to the Cleveland Browns.

Chris Mortensen, an award-winning veteran reporter for ESPN, died Sunday morning, the network announced. He was 72 and no cause was given, but he had been battling cancer during his life.

Mortensen had quietly quit the sports network earlier this year and ahead of the start of the NFL season has made it public to all of his fans.

“Excited about another season but it’s time to reveal after my 33rd NFL draft in April, I made a decision to step away from ESPN and focus on my health, family and faith,” he shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Luckily for fans who have been following his career for 33 years, he’s still going to be giving his hot takes on the NFL.

“The gratitude and humility is overwhelming. It’s not a classic retirement. I’ll still be here talking ball. It’s just time.

Buffalo Bills’ defensive back Damar Hamlin had to be taken off the field on a stretcher on Monday in a frightening incident that lead to the game against the Cincinnati Bengals being suspended until further notice.

During the first quarter of Monday’s match-up, Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, and both men appeared to be uninjured following the tackle. However, shortly after, Damar appeared to stumble and collapse on the field.

Medical personnel rushed out onto the field with a stretcher to get Hamlin out of the stadium to receive medical treatment. An ambulance was driven onto the field to attend to Hamlin, and medics were reportedly forced to give the 24-year-old athlete CPR.

He was then placed on a stretcher, given oxygen and taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Players from both teams appeared to be deeply shaken, with many on the Bills moved to tears by the frightening incident.
