The Summer Book Movie Ending Explained: Is This Based On A True Story?
Image
The Summer Book, the 2024 drama, revolves around nine-year old Sophia, who spends her summer with her father and grandmother on a Finnish island. The central focus of the story is on these two women—the little girl and her grandmother, both of whom, along with the father, are dealing with the same tragedy, the very recent death of Sophia’s mother. Adapted from Finnish author Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel of the same name, director Charlie McDowell’s very quiet film relies more on feelings than incidents. Not much happens story-wise, but it still manages to touch you. In this article, I am going to try to figure out what this movie (and the story) is really trying to say to us.

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens in the Movie?

Given the book came out more than half a century ago, there is no sign of technology such as smartphones. While the...

Alex Russell’s Sundance Hit ‘Lurker’ Acquired by Focus for International (Exclusive)
Image
Focus Features has bought international rights to “Lurker,” Alex Russell’s directorial debut about clout-chasing and the dark side of fame that became one of the standouts hits from this year’s Sundance, Variety has learned.

A tense feature about an ambitious hipster and the rising pop star he exploits, “Lurker” stars Théodore Pellerin as Matty, a lowly clerk at a high-end sneaker and apparel store in Los Angeles. When his favorite singer (“Saltburn” star Archie Madekwe) saunters in, Matty starts cozying up to the social media star. Before long, he’s installed himself in a world of hedonism and opportunity — and he can stay, as long as he manages the pecking order of the entourage and the fickle demands of celebrity. The Summer Book Review: Nature’s Role in Healing
Image
Charlie McDowell turned Tove Jansson’s beloved book, The Summer Book, into a movie. The Summer Book is full of the subtleties of youth and the bittersweet essence of memory. Jansson, best known for her Moomin stories, captures the ephemeral beauty of life and loss in 22 short stories set on a remote island and heavily laden with the weight of Sophia’s recent death.

Making such complex themes work on the big screen is very hard for McDowell. Children’s books often have an emotional depth that is hard to capture in movies. The narrative contrasts innocence and mortality, echoing how difficult it is for people to deal with grief today.

The characters’ emotional states are reflected in nature as they become living things. Both solace and decay are present in the Gulf of Finland. McDowell wants to capture Jansson’s spirit, but the film’s slow pacing runs the risk of veering off course.

Review: Charlie McDowell's 'The Summer Book' is Sublime & Peaceful
Image
"On an island everything is complete..." There's a little film playing on the festival circuit this fall (including at AFI Fest) that quietly sneaks its way into the hearts of anyone who watches it. This lovely story set on a Finnish island is the kind of wholesome, healing work of art that can provide real comfort to viewers of any age. The Summer Book is the latest feature film from American filmmaker Charlie McDowell, director of the films The One I Love, The Discovery, and Windfall before this. It's rare to come across a film that is so peaceful and sublime, never grating or meandering, so deeply in love with the magnificence of life on this planet. It's cliche to say, but it's absolutely true for this film – it feels like a really warm, nourishing hug of a film from a grandma that loves you dearly no matter what shenanigans one might get into.

The Summer Book AFI Fest Review — Glenn Close Stars in a Dreadful Slog of a Movie
Image
Eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close’s latest project, The Summer Book, had its US premiere at the AFI Film Festival. Robert Jones adapted the film based on Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel of the same name. Charlie McDowell directed the film that explores the process of grief and finding life after the loss of a loved one.

The Summer Book Movie Review

The Summer Book follows the story of a young girl named Sofia, who spends the summer with her grandmother on a small, uninhabited island. I love the idea and concept of exploring grief in a fresh and unique way. McDowell brought the script to life and showcased a raw and authentic look at grief through the eyes of two different generations of people.

Although McDowell captures the relationship well, the rest of The Summer Book is quite exhausting. Slow-burn movies aren’t for everyone, but when done right,...

‘The Summer Book’ Review: Glenn Close Shines in a Gentle, Mossy Take on a Finnish Literary Classic
Image
At roughly the two-thirds mark of Charlie McDowell’s ultra gentle, nature-mediated fourth feature “The Summer Book,” one of the main characters, nine-year-old Sophia (newcomer Emily Matthews), prays as her father (Anders Danielsen Lie) steers her and her octogenarian grandmother (Glenn Close) on a motor boat in the open waters of the Gulf of Finland. Sophia pleads, “Dear God, I’m bored as beef. Please let something happen. A storm! Anything!”

Curiously, audiences might be making the same request, as there is precious little plot or overt characterization in this tepid, languorous adaptation of beloved Finnish author Tove Jansson’s classic 1972 novel of the same name. This isn’t to say that the film lacks in hardy character or gorgeous idyllic cinematography. In fact, a grounded meditative island beauty — lent by silken picturization of reeds, moss, rocks, and dappled sunlight on ripples of ocean, as well as by a soundscape...

In Charlie McDowell’s last feature, Windfall, the ambitious (though largely unsuccessful) idea was to put the audience in a stressful situation (à la Hitchcock) and then quickly vent the pressure with a few violent set pieces (à la Tarantino). By contrast, his latest feature, The Summer Book, is based entirely on what we might call “scenic exhalation”: those moments of repose in which a character stares at a landscape while the cogs of reflection work away, revealing at last the bittersweet unity of all things. When used sparingly, the exhalation can be a highly effective tool capable of immense lyricism (as in Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice) and of subtle characterization (as in Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island). When used excessively, however, as it is in The Summer Book, the world of the movie starts to look suspiciously neat and Edenic, and the director’s benevolent hand becomes visible for all to see.

‘The Summer Book’ Review: Glenn Close Stars In Gentle Story Of Bereavement, Parenting & The Healing Power Of Nature – London Film Festival
Image
At one point in The Summer Book, Charlie McDowell’s infinitely gentle adaptation of Tove Jansson’s novel about a small girl, her father and grandmother spending the short Finnish summer on one of the country’s thousands of islands, nine-year-old Sophia looks at a tapestry on the wall showing a rampant lion. “Is the lion going to eat the man in the tent?,” she asks her redoubtable grandmother, played by a suitably sun-gnarled Glenn Close. “No,” Grandmother says firmly, “He is there to protect him.”

The embrace of nature, even when nature presents as a ferocious storm or the cruel predations of old age, is the guiding spirit of both Jansson’s novel, published in 1972 and drawing on her own long summers spent with a niece, and this faithfully rendered adaptation. Jansson spent much of her life living in a cottage like this one – all wooden planks and questionable plumbing – where,...

‘The Summer Book’ Review: Glenn Close Takes a Healing, Very Hygge Holiday
Image
Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel “The Summer Book” wasn’t a memoir, but it was a memory piece of sorts — its slender narrative of largely unspoken grief and healing imbued with, and enriched by, the author’s palpable feeling for its remote Gulf of Finland island setting, where she herself maintained a rustic holiday house. That it’s taken over half a century for this well-loved book to reach the screen isn’t altogether surprising: That level of subtextual authorial attachment makes it a challenge to film, as does its spare, outwardly low-stakes storytelling. In his fourth feature, American filmmaker Charlie McDowell makes an equally respectful and respectable stab at the task, capturing some of the wistful, soft-sun warmth of Jansson’s writing — though not quite matching its unassuming poetic depths.

The presence of Glenn Close — radiating creased, quiet benevolence as a weary grandmother anchoring a potentially pained family vacation — will...

‘The Summer Book’ Review: Glenn Close Gets Back to Nature in Charlie McDowell’s Delicate Reflection on the Cycles of Life and Death
Image
A lovely intergenerational moment toward the end of Charlie McDowell’s The Summer Book captures the restorative magic of its atmospheric setting on a tiny island in the Gulf of Finland.

Glenn Close, playing a grandmother nearing the end of her life, acknowledges that once-vivid memories are slipping away from her when she can no longer recall the feeling of sleeping in a tent under the stars as a girl. Her 9-year-old granddaughter describes the experience for her, bringing a smile to the old woman’s face: “I remember that … It’s like the whole island shrinks up around you until you and it are like a raft in the sea.”

Adapted by Robert Jones from the novel by Tove Jansson — the beloved Finnish writer and illustrator of the enduringly popular Moomin books and comic strips — McDowell’s screen version remains true to the source material by sharing its attention...
