‘Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken’ Directors on How Singer Brings Music & Hope to Women’s Prison
Image
Melissa Etheridge brings hope and music to the Topeka Correctional Facility in a powerful new two-part docuseries I’m Not Broken. The Grammy winner was touched by letters from residents of the women’s prison. Etheridge, who lost her son Beckett Cypher to opioids, connects with five from the facility and learns about their respective journeys including how they’ve battled addiction, generational trauma, and grief. The project also delves into how they’re healing and are working to find redemption while incarcerated. Etheridge grew up a couple of blocks from the prison in Leavenworth, Kansas. The documentary chronicles the months leading up to a concert at the prison, which includes performing a song she wrote called I’m Not Broken. Before the premiere, we sat down with directors Brian Morrow and Amy Scott about the making of the powerful two-part film. Paramount+ I know you’ve worked with Sheryl Crow before.

Melissa Etheridge Docuseries ‘I’m Not Broken’ Set for Paramount+, Focusing on Singer’s Bonds With Female Prisoners and Addiction Issues (Exclusive)
Image
“Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken,” a docuseries focusing on bonds the singer forms with incarcerated women over addiction issues that have affected their lives, will hit Paramount+ later this year, the network announced Thursday.

The two-part series will follow Etheridge as she writes a new song inspired by her communication with five women locked up at a prison in her Kansas hometown, the Topeka Correctional Facility. The anthem she writes for them is inspired by letters coming from the prisoners discussing their issues with substance abuse, among the other things that brought them there — a topic that Etheridge is fully engaged on, having lost her son to opioids in a headline-making tragedy four years ago.

“I’m excited for audiences to join me on this powerful journey and hear these remarkable stories filled with pain and struggle but also hope and healing,” Etheridge said in a statement. “I hope...

Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow: A Musical Life with ‘My Best Work in Front of Me’
Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow’s earliest musical memory begins in the backseat of a powder blue Plymouth Station Wagon. Only three years old at the time, she was being driven by her parents into the heart of her hometown’s commercial district when, fortuitously, Petula Clark’s “Downtown” came on the radio. Young Sheryl sang at the top of her lungs the whole way home.

It was the beginning of a lifetime of music that’s followed Crow from those simpler Kennett, Missouri origins to the height of musical superstardom in the 1990s, 2000s, and on through to today. When Crow speaks about those formative years now, it’s with affection for her hearth and kin, her parents’ musical tastes, and their encouragement for her to play piano for friends. But her favorite early singing memories of that time?

“It was really the quiet times when I could go sit at the piano by myself,...

Producers Guild Award Goes To “Green Book”
A few hours ago, the Producers Guild of America threw a bit of a monkey-wrench into the awards season works. Giving out their Producers Guild Awards, the top prize went to Green Book, shooting that controversial film to the front of the Oscar race. The PGA voters always catapult their winners towards Best Picture at the Academy Awards, so it was expected that this would occur here too. Well, it probably has, just with a movie that wasn’t the presumptive top tier with producers. Guess that wasn’t the case, so we need to re-evaluate things a bit. I’ll try to make sense of it all below! PGA went with Peter Farrelly’s Green Book over what seemed like more likely choice in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. Green Book wasn’t even necessarily considered next in line, as an upset...

Doug Jones and Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water (2017)
Producers Guild Awards 2019: Complete list of PGA winners in all 13 categories
Doug Jones and Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water (2017)
Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.

For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?

Seepga Awards predictions: ‘A Star Is Born’ will be reborn with a Best Picture win

We’ll have the actual champs indicated below with an ** immediately after they are announced. Here is the full list of nominations for the 2019 PGA Awards in...

2019 PGA Awards: All the nominees in the 3 film and 10 TV categories for Producers Guild of America prizes
Doug Jones and Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water (2017)
The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.

The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”

Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

Hal Ashby Documentary, ‘The Apparition’ & ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ Hit Screens: Specialty Preview
Hal Ashby in Bound for Glory (1976)
Weekend debuts are minimal as the film industry’s gravity heads north to the Toronto International Film Festival, though some roll outs hope to fill a narrow vacuum of new specialties in the marketplace ahead of the coming fall onslaught. Sundance premiere, Hal, about Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hal Ashby boasts an impressive roster of stars talking about the director behind classics such as Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Being There. Oscilloscope opens the doc exclusively in New York today before heading to L.A. next weekend. Music Box Films is rolling out French drama-mystery The Apparition, which it first viewed in the European Film Market coinciding with the Berlinale in February. And Uncork’d Entertainment is spearheading the stateside launch of South Africa’s Five Fingers for Marseilles, which it picked up out of Toronto last year, heading out Friday in a day and date release.

O-Scope acquires Hal Ashby documentary
“The world needs more Hal Ashbys,” says Oscilloscope’s Dan Berger.

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to Amy Scott’s documentary Hal following its recent world premiere at Sundance.

O-Scope plans to release the film theatrically this year after negotiating the deal with Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers.

Hal Ashby is widely regarded as one of the great overlooked directors and was responsible for Harold And Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home, and Being There, among others.

Scott’s portrait accesses rare archival footage, personal letters and audio recordings to reveal the artist who frequently clashed with the Hollywood machine.
