SXSW Sydney Headliners
Experimental music film “Pavements” and offbeat comedy “Nightbitch” are among five titles designated as ‘headliners’ of the film section on the upcoming SXSW Sydney festival.
“Pavements,” which premiered in Venice, is an experimental hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual elements from director Alex Ross Perry about the indie rock outfit, Pavement.
“Nightbitch,” which debuted in Toronto, is a darkly comedic fairy tale about a stay-at-home mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, who transforms into a dog.
Others getting the gala treatment include Max & Sam Eggers’ new A24 horror “The Front Room,” starring pop star Brandy as a newly-pregnant woman facing off against her mother-in-law; “Smile 2,” by Parker Finn; and Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live.”

Netflix continues to push into local content, producing its first Dutch film, war drama “The Battle of the Scheldt,” in partnership with local broadcasters and other backers.
Alain de Levita is producing the Dutch-Belgian picture through his Levitate Film banner. It will be in movie theaters in the Netherlands in November 2020, and on Netflix – where it will be branded as a Netflix Movie – in the U.S. and the rest of the world. Production is about to get underway on the $15.5 million war film, which will be helmed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr.
Set in late 1944 and shot in Dutch and English, the film centers on the bloody but crucial battle that claimed 10,000 lives but secured supply lines for the Allied forces’ push to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. It follows the lives of three people involved in the conflict: a young Dutchman fighting for the Germans, a stray English...

There are two new thrillers out this weekend in limited release that are well worth your time, and I reviewed them here. Two more indie thrillers hit both theaters and VOD yesterday, but they’re enough of a mixed bag for me to suggest you wait for their inevitable DVD or Netflix release instead. Both are produced and acted well enough, but they share a single trait that keeps them from the recommended list. For everything they do, it’s the things they don’t do that ultimately underwhelms. Cor van Hout (Jim Sturgess) is a man between jobs. It’s the early ’80s, and the economy in Amsterdam is in the canal leaving him far more motivated towards illicit employment. His friends are in the same boat — Jan (Ryan Kwanten) is good with his hands, Frans (Mark van Eeuwen) is a wild man and Willem (Sam Worthington) is an aggressive go-getter with an existing grudge against...

It's 1982 in Amsterdam, and for four friends, things aren't looking good in the true story dramatic thriller "Kidnapping Mr. Heineken." Willem Holleeder (Sam Worthington), Cor Van Hout (Jim Sturgess), Jan 'Cat' Boellard (Ryan Kwanten), and Frans 'Spikes' Meijer (Mark van Eeuwen) are all partners in a construction business that's about to go belly up. They're working-class guys, but they meet white-collar resistance when their attempt to get a bank loan to keep them afloat is rejected. Meanwhile, their sole asset and potential collateral — a run down, derelict building — has been overtaken by squatters who can't legally be moved. And while for most people this might mean trying to find a new job or starting a different business, these young men have had it with struggling to get by. So they take the next logical step and decide to kidnap the titular famous and wealthy beer magnate (Anthony Hopkins) and hold him for ransom,...

Yes, your first assumption is correct – Kidnapping Mr. Heineken details the imprisonment of Amsterdam’s most iconic beer entrepreneur, and even more shocking is that it’s based on a true crime. Back in 1983, Freddy Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were kidnapped by local scoundrels and then released some three weeks later for 35 million Dutch guilders – the largest ransom ever paid for one individual. As an avid beer drinker and alcohol culture snob, my complete ignorance of the real event is surprising and shameful, but Daniel Alfredson does an amicable job of filling in the blanks. Peter R. de Vries’s source novelization serves as a proper jumping point for writer William Brookfield, as he and Alfredson find a tense balance between historical recreation and cinematic embellishment – either of which can easily sink a true story when handled clumsily.

Who doesn’t love a good kidnapping movie? A bunch of criminal scamps, the blueprint-planning stage, and the final act of their plan unraveling in the shape of the kidnapping itself. From start to finish, there’s tension and drama threaded throughout every step of the story. So, throw in an international icon And beer and you’re somewhere close to Daniel Alfredson’s upcoming flick, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken.
Based on a true story, the movie follows four childhood friends – played by Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Mark Van Eeuwen and Ryan Kwanten – who in 1983 decide they want out of the rat race. Keen to line their pockets with enough cash to sink the Titanic, they carry out a plot to kidnap one of the world’s wealthiest men, Mr. Freddy Heineken (Anthony Hopkins). If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the man being taken doesn’t just share a...

But despite a carefully crafted plan, things didn’t exactly go their way: while Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were eventually released after payment of a 35 million guilder ransom, the criminals were eventually caught and served prison terms. One version of...

At 3 minutes and 26 seconds, this seems to be more of a showreel than a trailer – but it certainly whets the appetite for Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, regardless. Directed by Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played With Fire), and written by William Brookfield (Doctor Sleep), the film is based on the work of Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter, Peter R de Vries, who wrote ‘The Heineken Case’ in 1983, and ‘The Kidnapping of Alfred Heineken’ in 1987.
Heineken was Chairman and CEO of the brewing company, Heineken International, and was known to be one of the richest people in the Netherlands when he was kidnapped in 1983. His captors – Cor van Hout, William Holleeder, Jan Boelaard, Frans Meijer and Martin Erkamps – demanded a ransom of 35 million Dutch guilders which, when received, made it the highest ransom ever paid for one person.

Beer ads may be a cornucopia of cheap jokes, swimsuit models and burly bearded men stirring great barrels of barley, but it’s not always easy cooking up those brews. Especially if you’re Freddy Heineken, the grandson of the Heineken beer founder and a victim of kidnapping in 1983. But the world will soon become far more acquainted with the Heineken heir and his story, as the aptly titled Kidnapping Freddy Heineken has just filled out its cast with a slew of recognizable names. The most recognizable being Anthony Hopkins, who’ll be portraying the titular victim. As well, The Hollywood Reporter has Jim Sturgess, Sam Worthington, Ryan Kwanten joining the cast, along with the lesser-known Dutch actor Mark van Eeuwen and the Australian Tom Cocquerel (who’ll be making his debut performance in a feature film). Heineken was kidnapped by five men, so it’s fairly safe to assume that at least a few of these...

Across his long and illustrious career, Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins has portrayed a great many colorful real-life characters, from Us President Richard Nixon to horror legend Alfred Hitchcock. Now, he’s set to play another figure from history, in the second of two biopics currently in his pipeline. After playing Ernest Hemingway in Andy Garcia’s Hemingway and Fuentes, Hopkins will portray Dutch brewery magnate Freddy Heineken for director Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played With Fire), in Informant Media’s true-history action thriller Kidnapping Freddy Heineken.

Over two years ago, we featured a trailer for the Dutch film The Heineken Kidnapping, starring Rutger Hauer. The film told the story of Alfred "Freddy" Heineken, the grandson of the man who built the beer empire of the same name. However, rather that following his rise to success, the film chronicles a time in 1983, when Heineken, along with his driver, was kidnapped and held captive with a ransom of 35 million Dutch guilders, the largest ransom ever paid at the time. Now that story is heading to the big screen in the United States with Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, and Anthony Hopkins has taken the title role. In addition, THR reports Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Ryan Kwanten ("True Blood") and international actors Mark van Eeuwen and Tom Cocquerel, from the Netherlands and Australia respectively, also star in the film from Daniel Alfredson, director of the Swedish sequel...
