‘Cottage Country’ VOD Review
Stars: Tyler Labine, Malin Akerman, Lucy Punch, Dan Petronijevic, Benjamin Ayres, Kenneth Welsh, Nancy Beatty, Sabrina Grdevich, Jim Annan, Jonathan Crombie, Earl Pastko, Bill Turnbull | Written by Jeremy Boxen | Directed by Peter Wellington

Tucker and Dale vs Evil star Tyler Labine may have traded in the Hillbilly dungarees for a polo shirt and cargo shorts, but the film’s spirit is alive and well in Cottage Country, a witty woodland comedy horror with more than its own share of laughs. Look, stop reading this and go watch it already. Its twisty, constantly churning story is best viewed unspoiled.

Still reading? Well, if you insist. Taking off to the family holiday home for a week away from work, mild-mannered desk jockey Todd (Labine) and fiancee-to-be Cammie (Malin Akerman) don’t count upon the surprise appearance of his obnoxious brother Salinger (Dan Petronijevic) and horrible girlfriend Masha (Lucy Punch). With tensions quick to rise,...

‘Cottage Country’ Review
Stars: Tyler Labine, Malin Akerman, Lucy Punch, Dan Petronijevic, Benjamin Ayres, Kenneth Welsh, Nancy Beatty, Jonathan Crombie, Sabrina Grdevich, Jim Annan | Written by Jeremy Boxen | Directed by Peter Wellington

I was doing what many customers of Netflix do, browsing the catalogue of films on offer with a far-away look in my eye, unable to choose what to watch as the evening got later and later. As a fan of Tyler Labine from his work in Tucker and Dale versus Evil, I decided to give this movie a shot.

Also starring Malin Akerman (27 Dresses, Rock of Ages), Cottage Country is a comedy movie with elements of thriller, horror and romance, and is directed by Peter Wellington, who, from what I can tell, has only really been responsible for a few television movies, and random episodes of television shows I know little to nothing about.

Labine plays frustrated office worker Todd, a...

Fantasia Film Festival 2013: ‘Cottage Country’ makes a hilarious joke out of bad behaviour
Cottage Country

Written by Jeremy Boxen

Directed by Peter Wellington

Canada, 2013

Are people experiencing any fatigue with the decades old ‘cabin in the woods’ horror routine wherein a small party of reasonably innocent individuals opt to spend some much desired vacation in a solitary cabin in the wilderness, only to be chased, mauled, haunted or possessed by the nebulous forces of evil? Evidently not given that so many such movies are still produced on a consistent basis, yet every now and then a creative team cracks the code to making one that feels genuinely different. 2012′s Cabin in the Woods is one such film, and so is the Canadian made Cottage Country, from director Peter Wellington and screenwriter Jeremy Boxen.

Todd and Cammie (Tyler Labine and Malin Akerman respectively) are a couple very much in love who, through the personal reservation website created by Todd himself, have made plans to...

Kenzi is feeling left out, so she is actively seeking cases for her and Bo. One grabs her attention: a woman greets her husband, Graham, in lingerie when he gets home from his business trip. Before anything can get going, he explodes into a puddle of green ectoplasmic goo. Lauren goes with the girls so she can collect goo samples, but there isn’t much left. The wife explains that within minutes of her husband’s goo-ification, a clean-up team came in and sanitized the house. Wifey gets an unwelcome surprise when a trollop named Delia comes in, claiming to be the girlfriend (“We were, like, totally in love!”) Bo has to break up a catfight between the two, but does discover that on the night Graham exploded, he and...

Lost Girl (2010)
Lost Girl Episode 210 "Raging Fae" Written By: Jeremy Boxen Directed By: David Greene Original Airdate: 25 June 2012 In This Episode... Bo and Kenzi meet Lauren in an industrial area. A brawny ogre fae named Oscar had the crap beat out of him at an underground Mma fight - against a human. The only way a human could beat an ogre is if they were being dosed with something. So Bo heads down to Salvatore Ferraro's gym and asks to be put on the card. After a brief demo with one of his other girl fighters, Thrasher, Ferraro agrees.  While at the gym, Bo meets Mike, the fighter who (allegedly) beat the crap out of Oscar. Mike is certainly a big guy, but he is...

He is a light fae, and the apartment building he works at is his "territory." All of his residents seem to have had their brains turn to mush. They are walking around, catatonic or zombie-like, occasionally mumbling nonsense. Frank says he went to the Ash, who turned his back on him. ("Your turf, your problem.") Bo takes Lauren so she can collect samples and run some tests to try to figure out who or what is causing this mess.  That night, Bo is...

Lost Girl Episode 109 "Fae Day" Written By: Jeremy Boxen Directed By: Steve Dimarco Original Airdate: 12 March 2012 In This Episode... Today is La Shoshain, the holiest Fae holiday. Like any holy day, it comes with lots of rules. Celebrated by both light and dark Fae, no Fae can use any magic, feed off humans, or be violent. And like all religions, those rules are meaningless if you know the loopholes. Anyway, Bo and Kenzi are celebrating at Trick's bar when a loud screeching noise interrupts. It is the scream of a banshee which means someone from one of the five noble families will die. Bo has to head up the investigation, with Dyson as her backup. Since...

First Look At Malin Akerman & Tyler Labine In The Dark Comedy 'Cottage Country'
Lucy Punch Co-Stars Fun fact: rising funnyman Tyler Labine--seen this year in "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" and "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy"--is a graduate of the semi-legendary Canadian kids TV sitcom "Breaker High." His co-star? Ryan Gosling. It's like some kind of Canuck "Mickey Mouse Club" or something. And this is all to say that Labine, Malin Akerman and Lucy Punch have come aboard the dark comedy "Cottage Country" and there is already a first look at the film. The indie film was penned by Jeremy Boxen ("Degrassi: The Next Generation", "Republic Of Doyle") and has Peter…...

Casting Call: Malin Akerman and Tyler Labine in Cottage Country; Johann Urb as Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil: Retribution
Two bits of casting news for you today: one from a Canadian, dark comedy, indie pic while the other is from the fifth installment in a big budget horror franchise. First up, is the addition of Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil) to director Peter Wellington’s Cottage Country. The pair star as a couple vacationing at a family cottage where Todd (Labine) plans to propose, but is derailed by the arrival of his lazy brother and his hippie girlfriend. This is the latest addition to the cast of the fifth installment in the video game/horror franchise starring Milla Jovovich.
