Icelandic Trans Drama ‘Odd Fish,’ Brazilian Film ‘Baby’ Triumph at India’s Kashish LGBTQ+ Festival
Image
The 16th edition of Mumbai’s Kashish Pride Film Festival wrapped its five-day run with an awards ceremony that saw Icelandic trans drama “Odd Fish” and Brazilian-Dutch co-production “Baby” emerge as the night’s biggest winners.

“Odd Fish,” directed by Snaevar Solvason, won the best narrative feature award, while its lead actor Arna Magnea Danks scored best performance in a lead role. The film also earned a special jury mention for screenplay.

“These are the first ever award wins for the film, and the film has travelled to many film festivals,” said writer-director Solvason. “I love India and this award has brought sunshine into this rather cold countryside.”

Danks, a trans woman, mother of three, teacher, actor, stunt director and poet, added: “It is not everyday a trans woman like me gets an award. I thank my director and co-star and every single person who took part in creating this artwork,...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Revisits Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti As It Clocks 15 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new edition of This Day That Year, looks back at Prakash Jha’s drama Raajneeti which released 15 Years ago. The director also shares his thoughts on the making of the film and especially working with the incredible cast that included Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Sarah Thompson and Naseeruddin Shah.

Raajneeti has more characters lunging for the ballot box than the popcorn-nibbling audience can keep track of. A taut, clenched drama of devastating nemesis, Raajneeti moves across its epic-inspired canvas with a vigour and velocity that sweep audiences off their collective feet. The way Jha captures the parched, dusty, bustling energy of political rallies is impressive. This is no amateurish attempt to yoke the Mahabharata with Indian politics.

The truth-defining moments in Raajneeti are truly shattering. The lies that co-writers Anjum Rajabali and Jha’s characters live have ricocheting ramifications.

“Zindaginama Deserves Applause For Applause Entertainment” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Applause Entertainment’s Zindaginama, an AntiMatter production, conceptualized by MPower is a six-tier anthology of stories on mental ailments on SonyLIV. It is a huge leap forward for cinema on the invisible disease. Mental issues are never taken seriously in our country.

“Tu pagal hai kya?” is a flippant mode of banter. This anthology gently points us towards the core issue and yet keeps us engrossed without preaching or, God forbid, screeching. The tone of almost all the six stories, directed by Sahaan Hattangadi, Mitakshara Kumar, Danny Mamik, Rakhee Sandilya, Aditya Sarpotdar and Sukriti Tyagi, is gentle, prodding, sometimes humorous, at times deeply disturbing.

My pick of the lot are Caged where two men, played by Sumeet Vyas and that brilliant young actor from Tumbbad, Mohammad Samad, help one another in discovering and acknowledging their sexual identity. It is a tough story to tell and hats off to Samad for...

“Bloody Brothers, Maya Alagh Steals The Show” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Bloody Brothers(Zee5)

Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Tina Desai, Shruti Seth, Mugdha Godse, Maya Alagh, Satish Kaushik, Asrani

Directed by Shaad Ali

I never thought I would see the day when the lovely Maya Alagh would actually share screen space with Asrani, and that too in circumstances that are not quite….ummm…above board, shall we say?

Ms Alagh whom I’ve always found under-used, makes a comeback after ages as the wily Sheila Aunty, neighbour to an old lonely man played by Asrani (in a cameo) whom Sheila looks out for like all widowed aunties do. Or, so it seems. In the one sequence that they have together we can see some flirting and also some greed and covetousness creeping up onto the screen like a slithering snake slipping up a slumbering sleeve.

Ms Alagh is something else. So, in some ways, is this series. Adapted from BBC’s Guilt,...

Actress Sandhya Mridul says she plays a very powerful and intimidating character -- the strongest mother of the show "Mentalhood".

The ALTBalaji's upcoming web series, directed by Karishma Kohli, will take the audience on the "crazy ride" of motherhood.

Sandhya's character of a mother, Ajo, is a perfectionist who is a supermom who will do anything to ensure that her children are perfect and will go to any length to make them achieve that perfection.

"She is the strongest mother of the show. She is a very powerful and intimidating character who most of the mothers are extremely scared of, except for Shilpa's (actress Shilpa Shukla) character," Sandhya said in a statement.

"So, she at many times borders on neurosis because of that perfection. In real life, I am also like that when I am at work. I am so passionate about what I do that I want to ensure...

Dharam brings alive Kaka's Havell's memories!
Watching Dharmendra in Second Hand Husband left me shaken and shocked. I was not able to review the movie, simply because there was nothing in the movie to write that was in anyway imaginative or worthy of this being called a motion picture. What stunned me into disbelief was the fact that Dharmendra was being ridiculed on screen.

Do we blame the director or the actor for picking up a role like this? When I mentioned this to an actor from the industry and my plight on the review, he responded, "What can be so worse than to have a film so wretched that it's not even worth a review."

Those few lines summed up the movie for me. Die-hard Dharam fans will vouch for the fact that he was better than even Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand during his prime years. Why this now? I'm sure he can stay...

Bollywood Stars Speak Up Against the Return of Section 377- the Law that makes “Love” a Criminal Offence
Bollywood has famously advocated loving fearlessly without any barriers and to facing any obstacles that appear.

For instance “Jab Pyar Kiya Tau Darna Kya” (Why be frightened if you are in love?) was evoked through Mughal-e-Azam(1960) .

Raj fearlessly pursued his Simran , regardless of having to face the fury of a traditional Indian father, from London to India in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

Karan Johar had introduced homosexuality on the Bollywood screen through Dostana(2008).

Although Dostana was set within a heterosexual framework, the film portrayed the message that sexuality is not a choice.

Dostana also depicted a traditional Indian mother accepting her gay son.

Just when it seemed that Lgbtq (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) rights in India were improving, the situation has extremely regressed.

On the 11th of December 2013, the Indian Supreme Court made the human right to love freely, subject and conditional to an archaic law: Section 377.

According to this law,...

My Friend Pinto Movie Review
So we jump straight into My Friend Pinto and as far as the story goes, the main one [yes, there are more than one] is about Michael Pinto [Prateik Babbar], a Goan lad that has his world shaken up because his dear mother has passed away. So sad. But wait, there is a bright side. With no-one else to turn to, Pinto decides to go the big, bad city of Mumbai in search of his childhood friend Sameer urff(aka) Sam [Arjun Mathur]. Along the way, he saves the life of a Mallu Don [Makrand Deshpande], saves a dog that is given to said Don’s muse [Divya Dutta] but loses his wallet in the process, and basically becomes a magnet for trouble, all in one night. Throw in a few life lessons, a cute aspiring dancer/ladylove named Maggie [Kalki Koechlin] and a few songs and voila, you have a light hearted giggle-a-thon. Not exactly.

Sometime noble intentions are not enough to make an impact on the big screen.

'Zindagi khwab hai khwab mein sach hai kya aur bhala jhooth hai kya?' Remember Motilal's staggering existentialism in 1956's 'Jagte Raho'? Some such philosophy underlines the key goings-on in 'My Friend Pinto' -- a wispy, nostalgic comedy about a Goan simpleton's one night of zany adventures in the mad mad bustle of Mumbai during New Year's eve.

This isn't the first film that explores Mumbai by.
