The True Story Events Of Kathryn Bigelow's $132M Action Thriller Gets Called Out For Factual Errors By CIA Expert (Even Though It Still Got A High Score)
Image
Kathryn Bigelow is a record-breaking director who has been behind some stirring dramatic films. She was the first ever woman to win an Oscar for Best Director, taking home the award for The Hurt Locker. While her career started long before this, the Jeremy Renner-led film saw Bigelow's career make a foray into a gripping drama that puts its audience into a real-life situation. The film is not directly based on true events, but it is inspired by the real experiences of journalist Mark Boal, who was a screenwriter on the film.

‘Kraven The Hunter’ Wounded With $11M Box Office Opening, Lowest Ever For Sony/Marvel: What Happened
Image
There’s a saying among filmmakers about comedy movies: you can’t keep them on the shelf for long or else they’ll go stale.

The same is equally true about superhero films, and it’s a fate that Sony’s Kraven the Hunter suffered this weekend, becoming the lowest opening in the studio’s Marvel canon with $11 million three-day total.

The bomb is the third strike for Sony/Marvel following 2022’s Morbius ($73.8M) and this year’s Madame Web ($43.8M). These are films made strictly by the Sony brass without the nuance of Lord & Miller, who steer their Spider-Verse animated movies, and Marvel Cinematic Universe boss Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, who shepherd their Tom Holland-starring MCU movies. Combined, the Holland and Spider-Verse titles have grossed $6.85 billion worldwide.

Sony has owned the Spider-Man and friends portion of the Marvel library separate from Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe since...

A Controversial 11-Year-Old War Film Comes to Netflix in December
Image
Zero Dark Thirty was critically acclaimed for its visceral depiction of the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden. The film also received backlash for its alleged stance on controversial interrogation techniques.

Netflix adds 2013's Zero Dark Thirty to its streaming library this December. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the film depicts the intelligence operations that ended the search for Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty earned five Oscar nods including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress for Jessica Chastain, who played Maya, a CIA intelligence analyst. The Second Coming of Megan Ellison
Image
In early 2021, Megan Ellison emerged from a self-imposed Hollywood exile and did something she hadn’t done in over a year: She signed on to back a movie, Nimona. There was a time when this would not have been remarkable, when Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures was producing five films a year and she was considered the industry’s own Medici, the premier patron of prestige cinema. But Ellison had backed away from Hollywood in 2019 after a series of missteps and become elusive even to some of her own executives. When her former distribution chief, Erik Lomis, asked her whether she wanted to look at some reels of Nimona, which was about to get axed in Disney’s closure of Blue Sky Animation, “I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time,” Ellison said, answering THR’s questions by email. “But being curious, I said yes.”

Among its appealing attributes, Echo 3 was created by Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal, who also directed three episodes including the finale. What’s Coming to Plex in June 2023: ‘The Hurt Locker,' ‘Drowning Mona,' 'Basic Instinct'
Image
Kathryn Bigelow won an Oscar for directing “The Hurt Locker,” based on Mark Boal’s screenplay. Boal, a journalist, was embedded in Iraq with a bomb squad for two weeks in 2004. The film, streaming on Plex June 1, is a portrait of men in combat, the Iraq War, and the adrenaline that drives some soldiers to succeed at war, but fail at peace. “The Hurt Locker,” shot in a pseudo-documentary style, won additional Oscars for writing, editing, sound editing, and sound. Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Evangeline Lilly, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Guy Pearce star.

Watch the trailer for “The Hurt Locker”:

Also coming to the streamer in June is “Drowning Mona,” starring Bette Midler as a hateful woman despised by her entire town. When her car ends up in the river, the police chief (Danny DeVito) immediately suspects foul play. The only problem? Everyone is a suspect as Jamie Lee Curtis,...

Why The Hurt Locker Was So Controversial With War Veterans
Image
The Hurt Locker was praised by critics and cinema enthusiasts, yet the 2009 war drama was condemned as controversial by veterans. Katheryn Bigelow’s film about a U.S. bomb disposal team in the Iraq War received a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned six Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 2009. The exploration of soldiers’ psyches and the nerve-wracking tension of defusing bombs seemed like a brutal yet honest portrayal of war. The Hurt Locker may have seemed realistic to audiences, but it received a mixed response from war veterans, the very group it was depicting.

The Hurt Locker primarily follows Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) as he takes over command of a bomb disposal team, yet James’ actions are reckless and put the rest of his team in danger. Katheryn Bigelow became the first woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Director, and Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie...

Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (2008)
From The Hurt Locker to American Sniper: how Hollywood tried to tackle the Iraq war
Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (2008)
Two decades on from the beginning of the war, a handful of films have tried various ways to show the conflict with audiences mostly choosing to stay away

When The Hurt Locker, perhaps the most significant film about the Iraq war, won best picture, it also made a dubious kind of history, posting the worst box office of any previous winner. It had only made $11m at the time – and then several more millions after the Oscar bump – despite the pleadings of critics who insisted, correctly, that director Kathryn Bigelow and her screenwriter, Mark Boal, had made a studiously apolitical thriller about an army bomb squad that spends its days defusing improvised explosive devices. And what could be more exciting than that? How many hit movies and TV shows have been built around the tick-tick-ticking of bombs that are about to go off? Too many to count.

And yet, five years into the war,...

Craig Gillespie
Seth Rogen and Paul Dano’s GameStop Movie ‘Dumb Money’ Slated for October
Craig Gillespie
Sony Pictures has slated “Dumb Money” for theatrical release on October 20, 2023. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, tells the true story of a Wall Street short squeeze that momentarily turned GameStop stock into the hottest investment in town.

The squeeze had initially been triggered by users of the subreddit r/wallsteetbets, an online forum, although some hedge funds also participated. The momentary skyrocketing of the video game store’s per-share value, from $17.25 in early January of 2021 to $500 just weeks later, turned the saga into a skewed David vs. Goliath story. The narrative of amateur traders and “fans” of the company driving up its stock price as a form of fandom/social protest against the stereotypical investor class proved irresistible as a juicy media story.

Mark Boal Turns His Focus to TV and Latin America With Apple TV+ Thriller ‘Echo 3’: ‘We Spent a Lot of Energy Bringing Scope to It’
Image
Mark Boal has focused much of his energy as a screenwriter on interpreting the geopolitical dramas of our times in the Middle East and Central Asia. For his new Apple TV+ series “Echo 3,” the two-time Oscar winner who wrote and produced 2008’s “The Hurt Locker” and 2011’s “Zero Dark Thirty” has turned his gaze to the United States’ neighbors to the south.

The drama series, adapted from the 2018 Israeli series “When Heroes Fly,” revolves around a kidnapping of an American research scientist (played by Jessica Ann Collins) near the Colombia-Venezuela border and the rescue effort that ensues, led by her brother (Luke Evans) and new husband (Michiel Huisman) — both of whom work for a U.S. Army elite combat unit, aka special forces. “Echo 3” bowed Nov. 23 with three episodes, followed by weekly installments premiering on Fridays through the Season 1 finale on Jan. 13.

“Echo 3” marks Boal’s first series production — and it was a doozy,...

‘Echo 3’ Star Michiel Huisman on Playing a ‘Control Freak’ Soldier, Working With Mark Boal — and What People Recognize Him From
Image
In Apple TV+’s “Echo 3,” created by Oscar-winner Mark Boal, Michiel Huisman — of “The Flight Attendant,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Game of Thrones” and much more — plays Prince, an elite soldier whose wife, Amber (Jessica Ann Collins), has been kidnapped in Colombia. With her brother, Bambi (Luke Evans), a fellow Special Forces member and Prince’s estranged best friend, he goes on a mission to free her without, he hopes, causing an international incident.

How did the role of Prince come to you?

For a while after “The Flight Attendant,” we were looking for a project that would feel like another step up. This character is very different from anything I’d ever played before. And it would really allow me to flex my acting muscles, so to speak. So I had to fight a bit to land the role.

Why did you have to fight?

Oh my God!

Every Kathryn Bigelow Film Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Writer, director, and producer Kathryn Bigelow may be best known for her Oscar-winning action drama "The Hurt Locker," but her career is longer and more varied than many fans realize. Over the last 40 years, Bigelow has only released 10 feature films, but she has also worked in television and made a number of short films, resulting in a diverse and fascinating filmography. Despite early success with the surfer thriller "Point Break," Bigelow has maintained an independent filmmakers' sensibility, working in genres as diverse as horror and historical drama.

While Bigelow's visual style and thematic interests have shifted throughout her career, what unites all of Bigelow's films is an interest in masculinity and patriarchy, along with a mastery of action and suspense. With two Oscars, two BAFTAs, and many other accolades under her belt, Bigelow has cemented herself as one of the most respected directors in modern Hollywood, particularly when it comes to thrillers.

As the production of the new Apple TV+ series Echo 3 migrated from the heights of Bogotá, Colombia’s sprawling Andean capital, down to the lush tropical environs of Girardot, Luke Evans was savoring every moment. “It was a three-and-a-half-hour journey through these winding mountain roads — which at some points made you feel like you’re in Nepal — it was really extraordinary,” says the Welsh actor and singer over Zoom. The cast and crew also stopped in the port city of Cartagena and the white-sand Rosario Islands. Evans documented the experience to his 3.4 million followers, with videos of beachside workouts, shots of local fauna and expertly composed streetscapes. During filming, Evans’ Insta served as both a teaser for the show and as an unofficial ad for Colombia’s tourism industry.
