Hey Mike Flanagan, Can You Save Friday The 13th Next?
Image
Flanagan's horror track record establishes him as the perfect candidate to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. His success in adapting classic horror novels showcases his ability to breathe new life into beloved horror stories. Flanagan's involvement with Stephen King projects makes him a busy director, but one can still hope for a Friday the 13th reboot.

Mike Flanagan's established history of hits in the horror genre makes it hard not to believe that only he can save the Friday the 13th franchise. While Mike Flanagan has been involved with filmmaking for over two decades, he did not garner mainstream attention until the early 2010s when he started directing full-feature films. He further rose in the ranks as a horror director when his movies like Hush and Gerald's Game started receiving wide acclaim from both viewers and critics.

After helming a line of successful horror movies, Flanagan dipped his...

Friday the 13th Reboot: What We Hope to See From Jason's Possible Comeback
Image
In an exclusive piece from Bloody Disgusting, co-creator of the Friday the 13th franchise, Sean S. Cunningham, announced his plans earlier this year to get a reboot of the hockey-masked killer up and running. The news came after the franchise's long-running legal disputes finally came to a head, ultimately granting Victor Miller the rights to the characters and story of the first Friday the 13th film.

While the legality of a reboot remains up in the air as of this article, writer Jeff Locker has assuaged some concerns. Should the upcoming prequel series Crystal Lake do well on Peacock, the duo is hoping that any bad blood between Cunningham and Miller will be put aside to give Jason the big-screen return he deserves. If not, a Plan B for a sequel to the original film is also in development.

The Friday the 13th franchise has spawned 12 feature-length films since 1980, but...

Scream 2022 Proves Friday the 13th’s Reboots Missed A Clever Trick
Image
While Scream 2022’s success shows that Friday the 13th’s reboots could have revived the original movie’s whodunit murder mystery approach, both revivals of the franchise have taken things in another direction. The Friday the 13th franchise has a unique place in horror history. While the series is famous for its masked murderous villain Jason Voorhees, an icon of the slasher sub-genre, Jason barely even appears in the original 1980 movie. 1980’s Friday the 13th (which remains the most successful movie in the series when adjusted for inflation) is a Giallo-style whodunit whose mysterious killer isn’t unmasked until the ending. While Scream borrowed this twist, Friday the 13th’s sequels abandoned it.

Although Friday the 13th’s 2009 reboot succeeded, the movie didn’t bring back this element of the original horror hit’s formula. Instead, Friday the 13th 2009 focused on Jason’s exploits and abandoned the whodunit approach entirely.

How Friday the 13th’s New Movie And TV Reboot Can Both Succeed
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise may get two reboots in the form of Bryan Fuller's prequel series Crystal Lake and original director Sean S Cunningham's new movie. No matter how often the villain of a classic slasher franchise is killed, they always keep coming back. The blockbuster success of 2018's Halloween reboot spawned a whole new trilogy and proved that Michael Myers still had some life left in him. This hit was swiftly followed by Scream 2022, which revived the meta-slasher franchise. In October 2022, Jason Voorhees joined this list of returning slasher villains when it was announced that producer Bryan Fuller was working on a Friday the 13th TV prequel.

Fuller's TV series Crystal Lake is set to explore the backstory of Jason Voorhees and revive the Friday the 13th franchise after the series spent years off screens thanks to a protracted legal battle between its original creators.

Friday the 13th: Reboot in the Works From Original Director
Image
It has been an amazing time to be a horror fan. Along with so many amazing new original films scaring the heck out of moviegoers, major iconic genre franchises like Halloween and Scream have returned in such a huge way. However, the one slasher villain left out of the fun has been Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. Because of a legal battle between the original film’s director Sean S. Cunningham and writer Victor Miller, the franchise has been in a stand still for the last number of years. Fans have recently started to see some light at the end of this horrific tunnel with the announcement that Miller was developing a Crystal Lake prequel series with Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller and A24. However, if you’ve been waiting on the next film installment of the franchise, genre fans have finally received some of the best news in years.

Friday the 13th Reboot Film Being Developed By Original Director
Image
A new Friday the 13th reboot is in the works with original director Sean S. Cunningham. Cunningham, who directed the original 1980 slasher Friday the 13th, was recently involved in a lawsuit with original screenwriter Victor Miller, which has prevented any entries in the franchise from getting off the ground for several years. Despite the franchise including a whopping 11 Friday the 13th films and one crossover with A Nightmare on Elm Street, there hasn't been a new outing since the 2009 remake starring Jared Padalecki. However, recently it was announced that Miller and Bryan Fuller were developing a Friday the 13th prequel series for Peacock with A24, titled Crystal Lake.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Cunningham is now developing a new Friday the 13th reboot. The director is working alongside screenwriter Jeff Locker on the project. According to Locker, the pair hope that the announcement of the Crystal Lake series will help settle the...

Jason Lives! Sean S. Cunningham Allegedly Developing Reboots Of Friday The 13th And House
Image
Just months after a "Friday the 13th" prequel series was announced at Peacock, there's more big news from the beloved hockey-mask-killer franchise. According to Bloody Disgusting, original film director Sean S. Cunningham is reportedly working on his own "Friday the 13th" reboot. The news comes via actor, producer, and screenwriter, Jeff Locker, who says he and director Jeremy Weiss pitched Cunningham their "dream reboot of 'Friday the 13th' — with Sean's blessing to keep developing it with him."

This news is surprising given that a high-profile legal battle between Cunningham and original "Friday the 13th" screenwriter Victor Miller has kept Jason Voorhees from the big screen for well over a decade now. The two men ended up embroiled in a lawsuit, with Cunningham's company Horror, Inc. going up against Miller, who their argument claimed was a hired employee and not an author entitled to script rights. Miller did end...

Friday the 13th and House reboots coming from Sean S. Cunningham?
Image
When the copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came to an end, Miller was awarded with the U.S. copyright to the first film. Miller went on to team up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, A24, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, and Friday the 13th franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian – the last surviving investor in the original film – to start developing the “expanded prequel” / “pre-remake-quel” TV series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. Thanks to the involvement of both Miller and Barsamian, that series can use all elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise. But Cunningham isn’t just walking away from the Friday the 13th business. Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Cunningham is overseeing reboots of Friday the 13th and the 1985 horror comedy House (which he produced), while also producing an original film called The Night Driver!

Sean S. Cunningham Developing ‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot, ‘House’ Reboot, & ‘The Night Driver’! [Exclusive]
Image
Bloody Disgusting has uncovered a big time scoop to finish off the week, learning that Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) is not only working to get his own Friday the 13th reboot off the ground, but he’s also developing a reboot of a horror movie he produced back in 1985, House. In addition, Cunningham is producing an original film titled The Night Driver, working alongside writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss on the various upcoming projects.

Of course, the catch with all things Friday the 13th is that the franchise was up until recently mired in legal issues, with original screenwriter Victor Miller now joining forces with Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and A24 on a franchise prequel series for Peacock. That project is titled “Crystal Lake,” and Jeff Locker explains how a separate project could end up working.

Locker explains, “Sean hired me to do a rewrite on The...
