Cross-media project market and conference unfolds June 19-20.

Actress, writer and producer Emily Corcoran [pictured] and director Annette K Olesen’s will be among the film professionals crossing over to the web to present transmedia projects at the upcoming edition of Cross Video Days (Cvd) in Paris later this month.

The cross-media market and conference event, unfolding June 19-20 in a former warehouse on the outskirts of Paris, marks its fifth edition this year.

Founder Bruno Smajda is expecting it to be the biggest edition to date.

“It’s taken off in terms of the quality of the projects and the attendance of commissioners, one feeds into another,” he says.

“Today producers and broadcasters have to conceive projects in a transmedia way, taking into account convergence and what’s happening digitally — not least due to the realities of the market and the way in which people consume content,” says Smadja.

In this self-contained hostage thriller, car-crash victim and former model Pippa (Daisy Lowe) has her stylish apartment broken into by an art thief called Kayleigh (Eliza Bennett). Then Alfie Allen shows up as Kayleigh's partner in crime, and Pippa turns out to have an identical twin. Lowe and Bennett struggle with clumsy dialogue, although the former does well playing both sisters. Director Tobias Tobbell keeps the tone taut, but is let down by over-familiar ground, underdeveloped ciphers and a payoff that's not half as clever as it thinks it is.

Okay, let’s start at the beginning for once: Confine is just an awful name for about anything that’s designed to entertain. Is it about confinement, or being confined? Or maybe it’s an order to confine someone? Whatever way you look at it, that verb gave me problems going in that I really didn’t need.

Not that I would have been so pedantic had the movie been any good, mind. The plot’s essentially a mash-up of Panic Room and your bog-standard home invasion thrillers, with Daisy Lowe playing the disfigured, agoraphobic ex-model hostage and Eliza Bennett the psychotic villain.

That description sounds a lot more interesting than the film I saw, as the film relies on bursts of violence and kidnapping tropes rather than delving into its lead’s psychological problems. This is...

The 2012 festival will, like every year showcase some of the best independent movies that we can expect in the coming year and beyond. Raindance 2012 will take place 26th September to 7th October at the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly Circus in London. This year we can expect to see 105 features, more than 138 shorts, 64 UK Premieres, 13 International Premieres, 5 European Premieres, 19 World Premieres and 24 Directorial Debuts from 38 countries.
