Andre Ware

  • Andre was the 55th recipient of the Heisman Trophy and the first Cougar to win the award. In his first 10 games of 1989, Andre completed 329 passes in 516 attempts for 4,299 yards and 44 touchdowns. As a sophomore, he passed for 25 TDs to set a Southwest Conference record, giving up only 8 interceptions. He was a first round draft choice for Detroit in 1990 and retired from football in 1999 due to a shoulder injury. Andre moved into the broadcast booth in 1999 as the Color Commentator for the Houston Cougar Radio Network and Color Commentator for the CBS Television SEC Game of the Week. Andre Ware was the first Black college football quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy Award.
  • The Lions picked Ware in the first round of the 1990 draft, and gave him a $1 million signing bonus. But Ware rarely got off the bench in his four NFL seasons with Detroit and Minnesota. Ware's career totals: 83 completions in 161 attempts for 1,112 yards and five touchdowns.
  • Former NFL Quarterback who played with The Detroit Lions from 1990 to 1993. In 1993 he played with The Minnesota Vikings but buried on the bench. In 1995 he signed with The Jacksonville Jaguars but was released before the NFL season. In 1999 after only two days of training camp with The Oakland Raiders, Andre Ware retired after fracturing his shoulder.
  • Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
  • Former Houston Cougar and Heisman Trophy Recipient Andre Ware joined play-by-play man Marc Vandermeer as the official Houston Texans Radio Network Game Analyst for all 100.3 KILT broadcasts of Houston Texans football. (2005)
