Wil Wheaton in Leverage (2008)
Trailer for Crackle's 'Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story' Doc
Wil Wheaton in Leverage (2008)
"You want the truth? I'll give you the truth." Crackle has released an official trailer for a documentary called Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story, which will debut streaming as a five-part series about the story behind video game giant Nintendo. The focus seems to be on the rise and prominence of Nintendo in America, not so much its origins in Japan, as told through interviews with many game industry veterans. We love Nintendo and good docs and can't help posting about this anyway. Via Nintendo Enthusiast, the film features interviews with "actor Wil Wheaton, actor Alison Haislip, Nintendo of America co-founder Ron Judy, Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, former Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske, former Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé, and Xbox head Phil Spencer. But there are even more knowledgeable industry figures in the documentary where that came from, such as Digital Eclipse Editorial Director Chris Kohler, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski,...

Image

Playing with Power tells the sprawling story of Nintendo, the secretive Japanese company whose origins date to the 19th century. It features interviews with Wil Wheaton; Alison Haislip; Nintendo of America co-founder Ron Judy; Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell; former Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske; former Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé; and head of Xbox Phil Spencer.

First Trailer for Awkward Hand Puppet Comedy Film 'Allan the Dog'
Amy Adams, Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Peter Linz, David Rudman, Jason Segel, Matt Vogel, Steve Whitmire, Rowlf, Eric Jacobson, and The Muppets in The Muppets (2011)
"She's a human, and you're a dog! You're not right for Ellie, dude." Freestyle Digital Media has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Allan the Dog, about a hand puppet dog that acts like a real-life talking dog. We've seen an R-rated Muppets movie and a movie about a talking beaver hand puppet, so this seems like the next evolution in wacky hand puppet storytelling. Sam Daly stars as Matt, Allan's owner and "roommate", and Steven Wright (who also wrote the script) voices Allan the Dog. They're supposed to be different characters, not all the same. Their lives get all twisted when they both fall for the same girl. The cast includes Alison Haislip, Gwen Hollander, and Steven Weber. This sounds and looks as awkward and as quirky as expected, which is good and bad. Maybe there's some charm to this? Worth a look at least. Here's...

Fantasia 2018: ‘Dead Night’ Review
Stars: Brea Grant, Aj Bowen, Barbara Crampton, Sophie Dalah, Elise Luthman, Joshua Hoffman, Daniel Roebuck, Joy Osmanski, Alison Haislip, Sky Soleil, Alexander Ward, Dianna Miranda, Ryan Schwartzman | Written by Irving Walker | Directed by Brad Baruh

I can see some people already rolling their eyes when they hear about another ‘cabin in the woods’ style horror movie. Yes there has been a lot of them in the last 5, 10, even 20 years but plenty of good ones. I was hoping Dead Night would be one of these good ones.

It at least tries to do things differently. Not long after it begins, we are told what is going to happen in the movie via a TV documentary. Those kind of shows that explain ‘real-life’ crime and have ‘re-enactments’ when there’s no actual footage. But this show only shows one side of the story and the movie itself shows something that turns out completely different.

In April 2014, Wil Wheaton and Geek & Sundry took to Indiegogo in hopes of raising the $500,000 they needed to fund a third season of their board game-centered web series, TableTop. Star Wars Parody "All About That Base: No Rebels"
Meghan Trainor’s song "All About That Bass" is so catchy and addicting to listen to. Nerdist presents a Team Unicorn music video parody that mixes in Star Wars references called "All About That Base: No Rebels."

Team Unicorn is not the first to make a Star Wars parody using that hook. Youtube user Liminal Jay created a music video parody three days before Halloween. Team Unicorn did a much better job in my opinion in terms of lyrics, dancing, costumes, and references to both the original music video and Star Wars.

Details about the music video via Nerdist:

Meghan Trainor’s sassy “All About That Bass” has taken a trip to the galaxy far, far away in our latest Nerdist Presents: a new Team Unicorn music video! The Unicorns have dressed in Empire attire, brought in dancing stormtroopers and astromechs, added some Darth Sidious, and made the popular song an Imperial anthem.

Indie Spotlight: ‘Talking Marriage’ Is The Best, Worst Show Ever
Having marital trouble? Look no further than Ryan Bailey. The Los Angeles-based actor is the man behind Talking Marriage with Ryan Bailey, a web series that takes place inside a worthless talk show about the trials of marriage. Bailey takes the leading role as a host who is qualified to talk about marriage; after all, he has been married himself for five whole years. That joke explains the gist of Talking Marriage. It is a deadpan portrayal of the worst talk show in the world, with all sorts of little touches that add to the incompetence. Bailey spends most of the show bantering with his producer, ugly titles (in Comic Sans, of course) flash across the screen every few seconds, and the boom operator repeatedly lowers his microphone into the shot. Fans of intentionally bad comedies like Black Dynamite will appreciate the similar style on display here. Bailey also manages...

Zoe Bell Becomes Gator Bait in Freshwater
Zoe Bell’s made a career kicking ass in the movies. Judging by the premise of her new nature gone amok thriller Freshwater, it sounds like she better be ready to add alligator wrestling to her impressive array of fighting skills.

Zoe Bell (Deathproof, Raze) and Joe Lando (“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, “The Secret Circle”) headline writer-director Brandy Berry’s currently in-production Southern fried creature feature entitled Freshwater. Amy Paffrath, John Bobek, and Alison Haislip co-star.

Synopsis:

Lake Charles in Louisiana is the idyllic spot to catch some sun and enjoy the tranquil miles of freshwater. When a group of 20-somethings meet up at their island lake house for a weekend of partying, one of the friends never shows up. As more lake visitors are yanked underwater by what seems to be some giant alligators, the screams bring the group out of the lake house. Frantically discovering their boat has drifted away,...

What Video Games: The Movie inadvertently says about mainstream games
Video Games: The Movie takes a breezy tour of history, but shows mainstream gaming in a less than favourable light, Ryan writes...

There is no propaganda in the Star Wars movies. You don't see posters devoted to praising Emperor Palpatine's benign leadership. You don't see adverts or bill board posters positioning Darth Vader as a wheezing man of the people.

But if you did see propaganda in the Star Wars universe, it might look a little bit like Video Games: The Movie - a slickly-produced, 105-minute hymn to an industry that is itself an all-conquering empire. Valued at approximately $66bn in 2013, gaming is now the most lucrative form of entertainment on the planet - and filmmaker Jeremy Snead's documentary charts the medium's rise with unquestioning fervour, from its bleeping, rudimentary inception in the middle of the 20th century to its technically astonishing achievements in the present.

There are contributions...

Review Round-Up: ‘Adult World’ & ‘Dream Girl’
Adult World

Stars: Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, John Cusack, Armando Riesco, Shannon Woodward, Chris Riggi, Scott Coffey, Darin Scott, Reed Birney, Catherine Lloyd Burns | Written by Andy Cochran | Directed by Scott Coffey

Helmed by actor-turned-director Scott Coffey, who many may recognise from 80s films such as Some Kind of Wonderful and Space Camp, Adult World is another in a long-line of American indie dramas – you know the type: the ones that mix witty dialogue and a hip soundtracks in the hopes of creating something loftier than the rest. This particular example follows Amy (Roberts), a naive college graduate who believes she’s destined to be a great poet, who begrudgingly accepts a job at a sex shop while she pursues a mentorship with her idol, reclusive writer Rat Billings (Cusack).

Adult World shares a lot in common with 2009′s Post Grad, in so much as both films deal with young...

TV-Length Paranormal Comedy ‘Spooked’ Arrives On Geek & Sundry
Bryan Singer and Felicia Day have officially brought their paranormal comedy to the web. Singer's Bad Hat Harry studio and Day's Geek & Sundry channel have teamed up to debut Spooked, which has arrived on both YouTube and Hulu. Spooked was first announced in March as the latest nerd-friendly web series from Geek & Sundry, which has previously hosted Day's influential gaming web series, The Guild, as well as a nine-episode superhero comedy called Caper. Spooked is crafted from a similar mold; as with those two series, it centers around a ragtag band of protagonists who work together despite their disparate backgrounds and values. It's main difference is its length, as it is the first TV-length scripted series produced by Geek & Sundry. The first episode introduces viewers to the Paranormal Investigative Team (P.I.T.) and its first two clients: A lesbian couple played by Alison Haislip and Dichen Lachman who are...

‘Course of the Force’ Hosts Announced, Seth Green Joins Web Series
As Comic-Con approaches, so does Nerdist's 'Course of the Force'. The charity run to San Diego will kick off in a few weeks, and Nerdist has announced the hosts and correspondents who will follow the event down the Pacific Coast. Tradition media personalities such as Carrie Keagan and Ashley Eckstein will be joined by several familiar new media faces, including Shira Lazar, Jessica Chobot, Alex Albrecht, Alison Haislip, and, of course, the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick. All of these contributors cater to the nerd crowd in some way. Keagan has been a guest host on Attack of the Show in the past, Eckstein voiced Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Chobot hosts several shows for IGN, Haislip and Albrecht co-host 4 Points on the Nerdist channel, and Lazar has interviewed tons of nerdy YouTubers. As for Hardwick, we know for a fact he's as good of a host as anyone.

Video of the Day: Michael Shannon and Alison Haislip do dramatic readings of a sorority leader’s email
Over the past few years, actor Michael Shannon has seen the critical acclaim for his performances rise sharply, following a career of supporting turns in movies such as Bad Boys II and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. One genre the actor has yet to explore since his rise, however, is comedy. However, a new video from Funny or Die proves that Shannon is well aware of how to channel his characteristic intensity to comedic effect as well, as the actor does a dramatic reading of the now-famous sorority email that made its way around the internet last week. The video can be seen below.

****

As an added bonus, here is Alison Haislip, from the now-cancelled Attack of the Show! and current co-host of the Nerdist webseries 4 points with Alex Albrecht, with her own rendition of the email.
