This article contains Miami Connection spoilers
Friends through eternity. Loyalty. Honesty. These are the core tenants of Dragon Sound, a rock and roll band made up of black belts in Tae Kwon Do who also happen to all be orphans. Ridiculous? Yes. But it’s that sort of excessive cheese that makes Miami Connection such a wonderful movie, and not in an ironic way.
If you know anything about Miami Connection, you probably learned about it from a lover of “so bad, it’s good” movies. Filmed in 1987, Miami Connection was created by Tae Kwon Do Grandmaster Y.K. Kim as a way to raise attention to the martial art he loved. A beloved member of the community of 1980s Orlando, Kim had no problem earning money from investors or getting the mayor to issue permits for the movie to film on city streets. Even easier for Kim was finding actors,...

Opening in New York last Friday, and coming to select screens in Los Angeles this Friday, the 1987 cult action thriller Miami Connection is seeking Oscar gold with a new trailer from Drafthouse Films. This epic showdown between a synth-rock band of Tae Kwon Do orphans And motorcycle-riding, coke-dealing Ninjas surely has the stuff to go toe-to-toe with Lincoln. Right? Watch and decide for yourself as Maurice Smith pleads for a Best Supporting Actor nod for his role as 'Jim'. We think the song Friends has a real chance at garnering a Best Original Song nomination, but the fact that it is three decades old might hamper its eligibility.

Grand Master Y.K. Kim and Joseph Diamond Talk Miami Connection, In New York November 2nd and in Los Angeles November 9th
In 1987, the wildly ambitious Y.K. Kim, black belt master of Tae Kwon Do, set out to destroy cinema screens with a non-stop barrage of action in Miami Connection. Despite it being an amazing ode to motorcycle ninjas, martial arts themed rock bands, and the dangers of the drug trade, the movie landed with a loud thud. It was seen by few, and remembered by even less.
That is, until a member of the Alamo Drafthouse got a hold of a copy, and saw what a beautiful, bizarre thing it actually was. They scooped up the rights, restored the film back to its original glory, and are now set to release it on screens in New York this Friday, November 2nd, and in Los Angeles on November 9th.

Yes, you read that right. Putting aside the fact that Miami Connection was made in 1987. Discarding the notion that traditional Academy voters (prudes) might think it to be of a quality that is far below that of precious Oscar. And completely ignoring the part where the “martial arts rock bands vs. motorcycle ninjas” genre doesn’t quite fit in with any of the Golden Globes categories (because that shit is highly dramatic and comedic, ya dig?). All of that aside, the folks at Drafthouse Films are still spending money (what we can only envision is about $35) on a For Your Consideration campaign for the upcoming re-release of Miami Connection. We’re proud to be a part of it with this exclusive look at the Fyc ad for Joseph Diamond as Best Supporting Actor. It’s a fistful of awards potential, that’s what it is. To talk about why Diamond is a shoe-in for Best Supporting nods...
