Mike Greenberg has been named host of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown.
Greenberg currently hosts ESPN’s morning show, Get Up, and the Greeny radio show. He previously hosted NBA Countdown, SportsCenter and the Mike & Mike radio show with Mike Golic.
He takes over the host role from Sam Ponder, who was reportedly fired last week, alongside football analyst Robert Griffin III. The decision to part ways with the two was described as being part of a cost-cutting move.
Greenberg will join returning analysts Super Bowl Champions Tedy Bruschi and Rex Ryan, Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss, three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smit on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown.
ESPN’s senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter will return, as will Jeff Darlington, Dan Graziano, Kimberley A. Martin, Sal Paolantonio, Lindsey Thiry and sports betting analyst Erin Dolan.

Kenny Mayne, a longtime anchor and correspondent on ESPN who was also a wisecracking presence at the network’s annual upfront presentation, is exiting after a 27-year run.
“I am leaving ESPN,” he tweeted, in a laconic style suited to his on-air demeanor. “Salary cap casualty.” Among the people he thanked in the tweet was current anchor Scott Van Pelt. “I will miss the people,” Mayne wrote. “I will miss the people. I will miss the vending machine set up over by the old Van Pelt joint. We had everything.”
In a subsequent tweet, Mayne said he would continue appearing on the network until May 24.
Reaction poured in on Twitter. Former ESPN host Mike Golic spoke for many when he tweeted, “We are getting to the point of being able to start a new network with former ESPN employees that were [shown] the door.” Former SportsCenter anchor Jemele Hill, who left...

This Saturday-morning news show is supposed to look like the ones that precede it Monday through Friday. It doesn’t.
Co-anchor Jeff Glor isn’t wearing a tie and his colleagues, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson, often join him in a weekend outing that seems cut from different cloth than the weekday version to which it is tied. Brian Applegate, executive producer of CBS This Morning: Saturday,” sees no need to stitch everything together.
“What I really want to do is continue down the path of identifying this show as a unique broadcast that is unlike anything else at CBS News,’ says Applegate, in a recent interview. After years of being promoted lockstep on social media with the weekday program, he says, CBS News is set to launch a distinct social campaign for its Saturday effort.

One of ESPN’s longtime faces is leaving the network. Trey Wingo, who hosted “SportsCenter” and the network’s NFL Draft coverage over a two-decade tenure, is exiting the network after his contract was not renewed.
The decision not to re-up Wingo’s contract came as part of ESPN’s massive job cuts, the New York Post reported earlier this month (the NY Post also reported back in September that Wingo was being let go). The host’s departure was not confirmed until today, which is also his last day at the network.
“I can barely remember a day which didn’t involve working side by side with this guy. @wingoz has been an incredible teammate & friend for more than 2 decades. Keyshawn Johnson, Jay Williams and Zubin Mehenti have a big radio debut on Monday, when they take over ESPN’s national morning slot. But their new jobs started in earnest on Wednesday.
The trio met in their studio at ESPN’s New York production facility for the first time, ready to test out their rapport. “I think if you took out the bumps in the road and you put that in the can, that could have been a show,” says Johnson.
It probably won’t be that easy.
Johnson, Williams and Mehenti are taking over a slot inhabited by only a few voices in the past two decades, with Mike Golic talking to A.M. sports fans between 1998 and 2020, joined by Mike Greenberg for 17 years. ESPN raised eyebrows in July when executives announced they were taking Golic off the program. Greenberg had departed to host ESPN’s morning-tv program “Get Up” in 2018. On Monday,...

Mike Greenberg must move fast as the host of ESPN’s “Get Up” each weekday morning. He’s hoping a new radio gig in the afternoons will give him the chance he needs to slow things down.
“On the TV show, we are just flying through stuff. The average interview on my show in the morning is – a long interview for us is six or seven minutes. On the radio, I could see us doing 15, 16, 17 minutes when the circumstances call for it,” says Greenberg, in an interview that is just a little longer than the time he wants for radio sessions. “It’s not every day that you have the right opportunities and the right subject matter to do that.”
Greenberg is making a return to familiar territory but hoping to blaze a different path when he gets there. His new program, “Greeny” – ESPN originally called it “The Mike Greenberg Show,...

Mike Golic will soon be without an ESPN Radio show, but he’s not out of 2020 ESPN gigs yet — assuming Covid-19 cooperates.
On Monday’s “Golic & Wingo” show, Golic, who is under contract with ESPN for the remainder of the year, said that he approached management and asked to return to calling college football games for the company’s cable channel. That’s where the former Notre Dame standout and NFL lineman got his post-football start in media.
ESPN gave the green light to that idea — should collegiate sports actually return amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

ESPN is teaming with Jimmy Kimmel for a multi-part “30 for 30” on the 1986 New York Mets.
Kimmel, an unabashed fan of the Mets, will executive produce the documentary under his Kimmelot production banner, with Sal Iacono (“Cousin Sal”), Scott Lonker, Jordana Hochman and Mlb’s Nick Trotta. Nick Davis will direct.
The multi-part series will feature hours of never-before-seen footage of the ’86 Mets, a team known just as much for its off-field exploits as it was for its on-field dominance. It also came during a unique moment in New York baseball history: When the Mets were arguably more popular than their cross-town rival Yankees, who were in the midst of a dry spell (that would obviously not last long).

ESPN said it would cancel its flagship morning radio program, “Golic & WIngo,” while bringing Mike Greenberg, half of the team that helped the Disney sports-media giant carve a bigger business in the audio world, back to the medium as part of a reworking of its national lineup.
Greenberg, who spent 17 years with co-host Mike Golic on the morning radio program “Mike & Mike,” will keep his duties on the ESPN mid-morning TV program, “Get Up,” which he has helped anchor since the Spring of 2018. But he will also lead a new two-hour radio show that airs between noon and 2 p.m. weekdays. His former partner, Mike Golic will leave mornings along with Trey Wingo. The pair has hosted their program since November of 2017.

Let’s face it: Brock Lesnar is leaving WWE for Ufc after Sunday’s WrestleMania 34. That means he’s probably dropping the Universal Championship to Roman Reigns in this weekend’s main event — unless in a twist the “Beast Incarnate” walks away with everyone’s least-favorite (aesthetically) title belt. But where does the probable scenario leave Lesnar’s “humble advocate,” Paul Heyman, whose contract is also up by next Monday morning?
As TheWrap exclusively reported last week, pro-wrestling’s best talker is pitching a TV show around town with “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” creator Roy Bank. The busy Heyman is set to star in and executive produce the project, but it won’t prevent him from returning to WWE — if both sides can come to an agreement, that is.
The leading WWE options would call for Heyman to either manage newcomer and Ufc import Ronda Rousey, or the man likely to carry the all-red belt home with him late on Sunday. Even Heyman’s not sure what his near-future holds, as Vince McMahon notoriously never looks past WrestleMania, which is basically his “show’s” season finale.

“I have no idea what’s gonna happen after WrestleMania because all focus right now is on the final moments of WrestleMania and how to build everything in WWE to that collective moment,” Heyman told TheWrap. “Once we all figure out collectively what that final moment of WrestleMania is going to be, then the focus of this multibillion dollar global conglomerate will be what happens next.”
No, that’s really how WWE operates — even with its biggest stars in its biggest week.
“The best analogy I can give you is, the creators of ‘Dallas’ didn’t think about who shot J.R. — they just knew they had to put a bullet in the bastard,” the Ecw founder made it sound all TV-friendly for us. “Once they shot him, they had to come up with who did it. And that’s how WWE is focused… ‘Let’s get to that final moment of WrestleMania, then we can discuss the ramifications of it.”

The case for Heyman handling Roman Reigns is threefold: 1) Reigns will now be the champ, replacing Lesnar; 2) Reigns, who was hand-plucked by McMahon to succeed John Cena as the face of WWE, has faced a lot of resistance from the fans, who love Heyman; and 3) Such a pairing could help Reigns turn “heel” — or become a bad guy, for the uninitiated. WWE needs a top baddie.
Reigns recently discussed the possibility of being Heyman’s next “guy” with NBC Sports.
“I think it would be really cool,” he told them, per Sportskeeda. “Obviously it comes down to a couple of different things creatively, but I think it would be really neat. I think it would be able to show a different aspect of myself.”
Also Read: WWE Legend Ric Flair Signs on for Feature Film Acting Debut (Exclusive)
“It would show not only myself, but also him in a totally different light,” Reigns continued. “I wouldn’t just be the guy bouncing around not saying anything. If there’s something I need to say, I’m going to step up and say it because, regardless if I’m with a guy like Paul Heyman, I would not be a ‘Paul Heyman Guy,’ he would be a ‘Roman Reigns Guy,’ that’s the way that would work.”
That “guy bouncing around not saying anything” is a shot at Lesnar’s participation level when the fists aren’t flying, by the way. Beyond his mouthpiece Heyman, Brock generally lets his german suplexes do the talking.
“My role is my role and I don’t plan on changing that for anybody,” Lesnar’s opponent this weekend concluded. “As long as nothing crazy or drastic would change, I think we’d be able to do a lot of really cool stuff. I’m into it.”
Yes, Heyman’s talents would create some “really cool stuff” for any WWE Superstar’s storylines — but as Reigns pointed out, he’s doing just fine on his own. Rousey makes more sense, and she and Heyman already have a relationship. Back at SummerSlam 2015 in Los Angeles, Heyman was actually the one who first introduced Rousey to WWE executives Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Stephanie McMahon.
So that’s how the two potential (probable, we’d estimate) partners know each other, but why does she need him? Well, have you ever heard Rousey cut a wrestling promo — or even just do an interview? They’re… not good. But don’t take our word for it — ask Mike Golic.
Forget the in-ring action that she’s still learning — the lifelong athlete and judo champ will pick up on that — Rousey is not yet comfortable with anything involving a microphone. Hell, even her pointing at the giant “WrestleMania” sign at the end of the Royal Rumble was awkward.
A tag team of Rousey and Heyman is a win-win for WWE. After all, who mirrors Lesnar’s fighting career, intensity level and preference for silence more than Rousey? Heyman knows and creates the big fight feel better than anyone in fake fighting.
And you know what’s great about the desire for a “big fight” atmosphere, which is what Lesnar has brought to WWE for years? It makes for part-time work. Heyman is already used to such a cake schedule, whereas Reigns is in the building damn near every night.
For a guy running a marketing agency, a popular blog and about to host a TV talk show (of sorts), Heyman might not have 40 hours/week for Reigns.
Finally, in case you haven’t heard, there’s a women’s revolution going on in WWE — and Rousey is the biggest name they’ve ever signed. For his part, Heyman seems down with switching locker rooms, which would instantly add extra legitimacy to a talented group.
“I find it hard to envision a scenario working with someone on the male roster that would compete with the body of work that Brock Lesnar and I have put together as a tandem since 2002,” Heyman said. “The concept of lending my history to the women’s division is quite intriguing, whether that means standing next to Ronda Rousey or opposed to Ronda Rousey, I don’t know.”
“And I don’t even know if it’s applicable, because the concept of Brock Lesnar riding off into the sunset with his Advocate never to be seen in WWE again certainly has dramatic value as well,” he concluded, rather poetically. We told you Heyman could talk.
Readers can catch Heyman and Lesnar Monday on “Raw,” which airs from 8-11 p.m. on USA Network. Lesnar’s big WrestleMania title defense will main event Sunday night’s WrestleMania 34.

Michelle Beadle just spent a good chunk of time verbally sparring with professional wrestler Ronda Rousey. She’s got another battle looming on Monday morning.

Last week, we posted about Jake Golic — the son of Mike Golic, one half of Espn Radio's longtime morning drive dup Mike & Mike — blasting Espn for their handling of the pending break-up of the pair. But it seems as though the discord has extended to the principals themselves — and it may result in the premature end of the show which has been on the air since 2000.

Espn’s popular radio program “Mike & Mike” officially has an expiration date. The network announced during Tuesday’s Upfront presentation that Mike Greenberg’s new morning show will premiere on January 1, 2018 without Mike Golic. “One of the many benefits of working at Espn is that change and evolution are in our DNA,” Greenberg said. “My run with Golic has been an incredible experience that I’ll always treasure, but having the chance to engage multiple voices every morning in a dialogue on each day’s sports stories will be a great new challenge.” Greenberg will be joined by several full-time co-hosts and a.

Ahead of the start of the NBA finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, the hosts of Espn’s His & Hers, Michael Smith and Jemele Hill, have created a hilarious parody video of Kurtis Blow’s 1984 hit, “Basketball.” The hilarious video premiered on their Radio/TV show on June 1 and features a production as cheesily hilarious as the original. New and modern lyrics make the viral video the perfect lead-in to tonight’s Game 1 of the NBA Finals. I caught the video when Smith and Hill appeared on the Espn TV/Radio morning show, Mike & Mike. Michel Gondry and Gillette: these things don't feel like they belong together, but the filmmaker and company teamed up for the ad "Training Tracks." The sometimes music video director and LCD Soundsystem's Phil Mossman collaborated for a video in which beefy football players, including Champ Bailey, Kayvon Webster, Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis, Giovani Bernard and Mike Golic, Jr., work out in a music studio. The sounds of their sweaty endeavor are captured by the creative duo and mixed into a song. Since most of us are still waiting to see Gondry's fantasy drama Mood Indigo, this is fit to tide us over for now — even if it's missing the usual whimsy of his work. Also in the ad world meets film world (and television) is a clip from Kings of...

During Game 5 of the World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers on Monday night, Cardinals manager Tony Larussa made a series of increasingly unexplainable pitching moves in the eighth inning, which helped contribute to his team's loss. After the game, Larussa blamed the bizarre changes (sports fans and non-sports fans can read about them here) not on failed strategy, but a faulty bullpen phone. It seems that the Texas crowd was so loud that the Cardinals' bullpen coach had trouble hearing which pitchers Larussa was asking for when he called down. What would you do for more than $100 million? That's the question on 'NFL Live' (weekdays, 4:30Pm on ESPN2). The whole issue came up because current Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has failed to pass his physical conditioning test. So the 'NFL Live' team brought in correspondent (and former defensive tackle) Mike Golic. Mr. Golic has been retired for 16 years -- but would he be able to pass the test that Haynesworth has failed?
... And the answer is: Yes! Although Golic confessed to wanting to "throw up" after he was done. The test consists of two timed 300-yard runs, which must be completed within 143 seconds. Golic looked pretty winded upon completion. But still, he did it!
If Haynesworth is not able to pass this test, then his more than $100 million contract could be voided. ... By the way, the test that Albert was asked to complete...

As of writing, I'm engaged in a battle of wills with a wee anole lizard who has made his way all the way up the wall above my window. I've got both curtains pulled back so the window looks alluringly like an exit and a plastic bowl and magazine behind me so I can flip him into the bowl and out the window. I can see him wanting to move to get to the window, and he can see me sitting here watching him and neither of us are going to back down easily. I've previously evicted several lizards and a tree frog from the house because I've got a skill with it (or immunity to a violent case of the heebies) that both my roommates lack. Such is the price for living in a subtropical climate. If I were to get my own house down here I think I'd...

There were a few things I turned over in my mind for April Fool's jokes. That I would be taking leave from Pajiba immediately to become part of the "Quiverfull" movement with my new fiance, Saul, who believes the internet to be powered by demons and inappropriate for women folk. That I was actually a 55 year old male shut in who'd managed to create and maintain a false internet identity by using photos of his niece. That I'd received a request from Katherine Heigl's publicist to let her do the column for the evening to help "rehabilitate" her image and and accepted. Eventually, though, I realized it's a big enough joke that someone who gets only basic cable and who doesn't own a DVR or Tivo is writing a column about TV. Here's what's on tonight:
8:00 p.m.: "Bones" on Fox. Fifth season spring premiere. Woohoo!
"Flash Forward" on ABC.

John Legend is no stranger to the sports world. He sang at the Super Bowl, performed at WrestleMania and put synchronized swimmers in the “Green Light” video. But Friday morning, one of music’s biggest stars will have his sports knowledge and passion tested when he co-hosts Espn Radio’s “Mike & Mike in the Morning.” He will sit in the seat normally taken up by former NFL All-Pro Mike Golic and will trade trivia and opinions with Mike Greenberg. It’s an early show — the party kicks off at 6 a.m. — but it’ll be worth hearing Legend’s insights on the morning’s topics, which will probably include the results of tonight’s NBA Finals game, the Major League Baseball draft and the upcoming NFL season. It’s unlikely that Legend will attempt to talk while filling his mouth with donuts, but hey, you never know.
