The Scandal cast will reunite with show creator Shonda Rhimes for a live script reading fundraiser next month benefitting victims of North Carolina’s Hurricane Helene through United Way North Carolina.

The event is spearheaded by castmember Bellamy Young, who was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. “There were those intervening days where we couldn’t get in touch with people, you didn’t know if the people you loved were alive,” Young told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love my home so much, and I just was just trying to think of anything that I could do to help.”

A defamation lawsuit against Netflix over its miniseries Inventing Anna — about the “Soho grifter” Anna Delvey, a.k.a. Anna Sorokin — is set to go to trial after a judge rejected the streaming service’s bid to dismiss the case.

In August 2022, six months after the Shonda Rhimes-produced miniseries debuted, former Vanity Fair photo editor and Delvey’s friend Rachel DeLoache Williams filed the lawsuit against Netflix, citing 16 instances in which she claimed she was defamed and vilified in Inventing Anna.

A former friend of con artist Anna Sorokin was allowed on Tuesday to proceed with a defamation lawsuit against Netflix over the Shonda Rhimes miniseries, “Inventing Anna.”

Netflix had argued that Rhimes and the other show creators have a “literary license” to give their interpretation of events. In rejecting that argument, Chief Judge Colm F. Connolly found that at least some of the characterizations in the show could cross the line into defamation.

The plaintiff, Rachel DeLoache Williams, was depicted as abandoning Sorokin in Morocco and ultimately betraying her to the authorities. Williams has claimed that 16 separate sets of statements in the series falsely portray her as “snobbish,” “unethical” and “greedy.”

Sorokin pretended to be a German heiress by the name of Anna Delvey. She was ultimately convicted of cheating banks and other businesses out of about $200,000, and served nearly four years in custody. She is now on house arrest while she fights deportation.

This Is Us star Mandy Moore was among the hundreds of actors who took to the picket lines Tuesday as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike against Hollywood’s streamers and studios over core issues like streaming residuals.

The Emmy-nominated actress spent six seasons starring as the matriarch on the Disney-produced NBC drama This Is Us and, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, says she has received checks ranging from a penny to 81 cents in return for the hit show’s streaming deal with Hulu.

“The residual issue is a huge issue,” Moore says from the Disney picket line in Burbank, where she was joined by former Scandal star Katie Lowes. “We’re in incredibly fortunate positions as working actors having been on shows that found tremendous success in one way or another … but many actors in our position for years before us were able to live off...

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.

“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.

It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.

Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. What is it capable of? They’re philosophical questions,” he said.

Duchovny also highlighted streaming residuals. “We always worked in a business that rewarded success and didn’t want failure.

While ‘90s or musical-themed pickets may have helped maintain WGA morale during the first 73 days of their strike, the writers got a much bigger lift on Friday as actors joined them on lines across Los Angeles.

The first official day of the historic SAG-AFTRA strike brings with it the promise of A-listers from the 160,000-member group — or, at the very least, union leader and ascendant folk hero Fran Drescher — as two of Hollywood’s most significant labor groups picket alongside one another for the first time since 1960. Demonstrations were again held at 10 sites around L.A., on a day with temperatures set to climb to 95 degrees in some parts, though Netflix and Warner Bros. When Jimmy Kimmel last hosted the Oscars in 2018, the TV vet made sure ticketed guests were prepared for the show to go long (as it typically does) by delivering curated “lunchboxes” packed with snacks under each seat inside the Dolby Theatre. Inside were gourmet chips, cookies, gummy bears, cookies and snack bars while the outside featured artwork from one of nine nominated best pictures.

As Kimmel returned to the Dolby on Sunday night for a third outing as host, he made sure the night was just as charming on the snacks front. He and his staff along with the Academy offered up another round of food boxes for the 2023 Oscars audience, expected to be at capacity of 3,400.

The boxes — covered with a caricature of a bearded Kimmel holding an Oscar — featured Shappy Pretzel Co., eco-conscious alumimun bottles of Open Water, Sour Patch candy and another “handwritten” note from the host himself.

Scandal fans will soon be able to relive the show’s most memorable moments via a podcast produced by Shondaland Audio — through the lens of one of the series’ most beloved duos.

Hosted by Katie Lowes and Guillermo Díaz, Unpacking The Toolbox will feature conversations about the political thriller as they rewatch the series from start to finish.

“Former B613 duo – Huckleberry Quinn – will share behind the scenes stories, fun facts, on set memories and a healthy dose of laughs – sometimes inviting their co-stars, writers, crew members and maybe even superfans to reminisce and relive the making of Scandal together,” the podcast description reads.

Rachel DeLoache Williams is suing Netflix.

On Monday, the writer filed a lawsuit alleging defamation and false light invasion of privacy against the streaming service for its portrayal of her in the series, “Inventing Anna“, according to court docs obtained by Et. Et has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Katie Lowes played Williams in the series, which follows the fraudulent actions of Anna Sorokin, who went by Anna Delvey at the time. Williams documented her one-time friendship with Sorokin in a 2019 book, My Friend Anna.

“This action will show that Netflix made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the series which portray her as a greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person,” the docs allege. “… This action is based firmly on statements of fact which are demonstrably false and the attribution of statements that she never made.”

Netflix scored itself a huge streaming hit with the miniseries "Inventing Anna," which followed the story of Anna Delvey, a con artist who worked her way up the high-end social scene in New York City. Much of the series, which hails from mega-producer Shonda Rhimes, was fictionalized but was ultimately based on a May 2018 New York Magazine article. However, the elements of the series that the streaming service chose to keep intact may have landed them in hot water.

As reported by The Wrap, former Vanity Fair journalist Rachel Williams is now suing Netflix for defamation. Williams was played in the show by Katie Lowes but, rather importantly, her name, occupation, and other key details were not changed. But the lawsuit alleges that the elements that were fictionalized did actual damage to her real name.

The Emmy-nominated series stars Julia Garner as convicted fraudster Anna “Delvey” Sorokin, who conned elite Manhattan into believing she was an international heiress. While Sorokin has (for the most part) stood by the series, it’s former Vanity Fair photo editor Rachel Williams who is slapping the streamer with a defamation suit. Williams is portrayed by Katie Lowes in the Shonda Rhimes-produced limited series.

Williams previously wrote about her experiences with former best friend Delvey in 2018 for Vanity Fair after Delvey allegedly conned her into footing the bill for a 62,000 trip to Morocco; Williams carried the debt on her corporate Condé Nast credit card.

Inventing Anna became an instant hit when it was released earlier this year. The series gave us plenty of true crime material to pour over – but where exactly does fact stop and fiction start?

The Netflix series – which stars Ozark actor Julia Garner as scammer Anna Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin) – was one of the streamer’s most anticipated releases to date, and captivated audiences when it finally arrived in February.

The show, however, also caused a major stir. Netflix has since been sued by Rachel DeLoache Williams, former Vanity Fair staffer and real-life former friend of Delvey’s who is portrayed in the series by actor Katie Lowes.

Journalist Rachel Williams has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix for the portrayal of her in the streamer’s limited drama series “Inventing Anna.”

“Netflix purposely used my real name, and real aspects of my life, to create a totally false and defamatory characterization of me,” Williams said in a statement sent by her attorney to TheWrap. Williams, a former writer and photo editor for Vanity Fair played by “Scandal” alum Katie Lowes in the series, was a close acquaintance of Russian-born schemer Anna Sorokin (played by Julia Garner).

The lawsuit seeks to show that Netflix “made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the Series which portray her as a greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person,” according to the documents.

Netflix’s propensity toward docudramas is landing the streamer in hot water, this time courtesy of Rachel Williams — an associate of New York City con artist Anna Sorokin. She sued the company on Monday for defamation over her portrayal in Inventing Anna.

The series, based on a May 2018 New York article, showcases the scams and downfall of Sorokin, better known as Anna Delvey. In the show, Sorokin swindles her way into New York City’s upper crust by lying about her fortune as a German heiress and defrauds banks out of millions to fund her extravagant lifestyle.
