Horror Franchises Perfect For A Late-Night Movie Marathon
Image
Something about having a scary movie marathon on a late Autumn night feels so right. It’s the perfect Halloween season activity to enjoy with friends and family. Whether it be campy horror, a ghost story, or a classic slasher, the horror genre has a wide variety of franchises that make for incredible movie marathons.

It’s no secret some horror franchises get a bad rap because, let’s face it, horror sequels can be pretty awful. Still, no proper horror movie marathon is complete without a few unintentionally hilarious bad films to laugh at between the genuinely scary ones. Despite the inconsistent scares, these horror franchises are perfect for late-night movie marathons.

Update October 25, 2023, by Anthony Jeanetta. Late October is ideal for gathering friends and family and having a horror movie marathon. This list is updated to include more of the best horror franchises perfect for a scary movie marathon.

Idiot's Guide to the 'Paranormal Activity' Movies
The "Paranormal Activity" movies are credited with taking the terror out of art-directed dungeons and dilapidated bathrooms and putting it right smack dab in the middle of our bedrooms. The "Saw" series raised a white flag of surrender after "Paranormal Activity" took most of the Halloween box office dollars in 2009, bringing an end to Jigsaw's legacy and returning us to the land of lo-fi horror.

Since then, the "Paranormal" series has become something of its own "Saw"-sized franchise, with the fourth installment set to hit theaters this Friday. Somewhat unfortunately (though probably inevitably), the more this decades-spanning haunted house tale expands and explains its increasingly silly mythology, the less scary and interesting it becomes — though we have to give props to the producers for maintaining the low-budget, "found footage" aesthetic that the first film incorporated so brilliantly.

Here's a refresher on all the bumps in the night (and, sometimes,...

First Two Trailers for Paranormal Activity 4 Fast-Forward the Frights
It seems like Christmas Halloween comes earlier and earlier every year. We're still neck-deep in the summer blockbuster season, but Paramount Pictures wants you to start thinking about the fall fright season, releasing two new trailers for Paranormal Activity 4, the latest installment in the wildly popular found-footage franchise that might just be the last installment if the tagline "All the activity has led to this..." is any indication.

Paranormal Activity 3 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman return to helm the fourth chapter, which has fast-forwarded in time to 2011, five years after the events in Paranormal Activity 2 (PA3 was a prequel that took place in 1988). The "activity" that led Katie (Katie Featherston) to kill her boyfriend (Micah Sloat), her sister (Sprague Grayden), and her brother-in-law (Brian Boland), and kidnap her sister's infant son, Hunter, has now appeared to have taken possession (whether literally or figuratively, we can't say) of the young boy,...

Paranormal Activity 3 - Blu-ray Review
The third time is the charm? It certainly charmed the box office (so look out for a fourth) and returned much on the investment. There are some good jump scares, but maybe the formula is a bit too noticeable as well. Again, those box office numbers will negate any criticism since Paramount is laughing all the way to the bank. 2005 . Katie (Katie Featherston) delivers a box of videotapes to her sister Kristi.s (Sprauge Grayden) house. Kristi and her husband Daniel (Brian Boland) dump them in their basement. A year later their house is ransacked and the tapes are missing. Flashback to 1988 . Young Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) are living...

Friday the 13th is a day that always has a special meaning for fans of the horror genre. Last week on that fateful day, I was invited to a tea party in Hollywood to celebrate the successful horror sequel Paranormal Activity 3, which arrives on Blu-ray and DVD January 24. We were joined by producer Oren Peli, cast members Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Chloe Csengery, and Jessica Brown to discuss the past, present, and future of this successful horror franchise. There was even a seat reserved at the table for the evil spirit Toby, although he didn't say much...

Blu-ray, DVD Release: Paranormal Activity 3
Blu-ray/DVD Release Date: Jan. 24, 2012; DVD Release Date: Feb. 14, 2012

Price: DVD $19.99, Blu-ray/DVD Combo $39.99

Studio: Paramount Home Entertainment

The third installment of the horror franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel of the first two movies, looking at how the, well, paranormal activity surrounding their family began.

Set in 1988, the film watches young sisters Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) as they make friends with an invisible entity living in their home.

Katie Featherston, Molly Ephraim and Brian Boland return to their roles as the older Katie, Ali Rey and Daniel Rey, respectively, roles Featherston played in both prior movies and Ephraim and Boland introduced in Paranormal Activity 2.

Rated R, the spooky third film, told via security camera footage and home movies, got mixed reviews from critics and audiences, but that didn’t stop Paranormal Activity 3 from racking up $103 million when it was in theaters.

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack,...

Paranormal Activity 3 to Gross $10 Million Above Estimates?: Box Office
Paranormal Activity 3 Last weekend, people were complaining that the North American box office has been in the doldrums throughout the fall because of a dearth of original, quality movies. Proving those pundits right — as they always are — the third installment of a cheap horror franchise, with a mediocre 60% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics, Paranormal Activity 3, has soared to the top of the box-office chart and will likely beat estimates by about $10 million. Co-directed by Catfish's Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Paranormal Activity 3 was expected to earn around $40 million in the Us/Canada over the weekend. It'll likely take in around $50 million after pulling in $26.23 million on Friday (including $8 million from Thursday midnight screenings) as per The Hollywood Reporter. The film officially cost $5 million, but that's without marketing/distribution expenses. The previous Paranormal Activity flick, aptly titled Paranormal Activity 2, cost a reported $3m — gee,...

New Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer Ties It All Together
After releasing three preview clips earlier this week, a new trailer for the upcoming sequel Paranormal Activity 3 has arrived online to help answer the riddle of what those mysterious clips were about.

The first Paranormal Activity followed Katie (Katie Featherston) and her boyfriend Micah (Micah Sloat) as they attempt to catch the spirit haunting their Southern California home on video, while Paranormal Activity 2 saw that spirit transfer to Katie's sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden), and her brother-in-law, Dan (Brian Boland). Not to spoil anything, but both movies ignore a "feel-good" ending.

The third installment documents the childhood of both sisters, as their father, much like Micah in the original, places cameras all over the house in an attempt to record the mysterious source of noises and bumps.

Paranormal Activity 3's First TV Spot Summons "Bloody Mary"
Typically, consecutive movies in a franchise have storylines that move forward in time, but the timeline in the Paranormal Activity franchise is a little more complicated than that. The first movie took us into the home of Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherston), a young California couple who became obsessed with discovering the source of the strange occurrences in their home, an obsession that ended in demonic possession and death. The "found footage" that comprised the second movie took place before (prequel), during (midquel), and after (sequel) the events in the first movie and revealed that the the entity was transferred over to Katie by her sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden), and her brother-in-law, Dan (Brian Boland), after it nearly tore their family apart.

The latest movie, Paranormal Activity 3, plays with the timeline even more, setting much (if not all) of the action 18 years before the events depicted in the...

Tff'11: Dennis Farina Is Superb In Last Rites Of Joe May
By Sam Weisberg - April 28, 2011

No actor has mastered the art of muttering obscenities under his breath more expertly than Dennis Farina. In “Get Shorty,” “Snatch” and other films about low-life criminals, Farina, with his eagle-eyed glare, Charles Bronson-like mustache and clenched-teeth diction, has stolen every scene he’s in merely by spouting off an array of expletives. “The fucking airport,” he barks at a cab driver in “Get Shorty,” disgusted at being put upon to give simple directions. His every eyebrow twitch, stiff-necked shrug and sarcastic overemphasis on every word—as if he’s already explained what he’s saying three times—deliver the message: “I don’t give an inch for you—you give an inch for me.”

Happily, Farina’s signature macho style is put to good use for much of “The Last Rites of Joe May.” But the film, directed and written by Joe Maggio,...

DVD Review: Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 2 serves as a prequel to the first film bringing back our familiar couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) plus some new faces. Kip Williams takes over the reigns for this second outing as original director Oren Peli steps over to the producer’s chair.

To me Pa-2 takes a long time to get moving and I’ll confess I took a nap for about 20 minutes. Don’t get me wring, when the movie gets going it gets good. The security cameras set up all through the house make for an interesting view for the audience and plays an important part in the movie.

The new characters in this are a couple, their teenage daughter and a baby, which also plays a major part in the story and creepy scenes. The creepiness is amped up a level for this one but still stays true to the original. You lean...

Blu-ray Review: Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 2

Stars: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Sprague Grayden | Written by Michael R. Perry | Directed by Tod Williams

Handheld camera? Check. Creepy soundtrack? Check. Spirits more haunting than before? Check. And it’s a sequel, well, prequel. Yes, we are now ready to experience the next chapter in the Paranormal Activity story. This time being set before the antics that took place on our screens last year, this film will more than likely bring you to tears, make you leave the cinema or just leave you an utterly paranoid.

There’s something about this film that brings with it a real sense of fear. The technique it uses has been done before and the story is a familiar one to us. But there is no doubt in my mind this is the scariest film I have possibly seen- And I love horrors. Without an inch of exaggeration, I...

[DVD Review] Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 2 is being released on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy in a nifty new combo pack guaranteed to scare your pants off. This is great news because the horror genre has been on a bit of a decline in recent years. The only real entries in this genre have been the numerous Saw films. Paranormal Activity and its follow-up Paranormal Activity 2 are fresh and original stories offering audiences genuine scares proving to the world that the horror genre is not just limited to gory torture porn.

Taking place a few weeks before the first Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2 serves as a prequel to the hit film. An ordinary family, the Rey’s house is burglarized one day causing the father Dan (Brian Boland) to have surveillance cameras installed. He does this for the welfare of his family especially for the protection of his baby boy Hunter.

Paranormal Activity 2 (Review - New to video this week)
2010 - 91 mins. - Rated Rd: Tod Williams

C: Brian Boland, Sprague Grayden, Molly Ephraim, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Seth Ginsberg, Vivis Cortez

A family that has had their home vandalized slowly comes to realize that a demonic presence may be at work terrorizing them in at first a subtle way, but growing more violent as the days pass.

Last year there was the phenomena known as Paranormal Activity that spooked audiences and made some pretty scary coin at the box office. So how how does this sequel measure up? Viewers that dug what the first one did, will be pleased with this. It treads the same formula as the original and doesn't divert away from what worked in the first film. For those less enamored, the above mentioned reasons as to why fans will like this entry, will also be the exact same reason as to why it doesn't work.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases: February 8th - I Spit on Your Paranormal Soul
We are very giddy this week because a couple of titles that are near and dear to our hearts will be available for you folks to take home.

While we had gone on ad nauseam about the spectacular second Paranormal Activity demonic home invasion film, you can now watch it in your own house over and over again. Your home surveillance camera videos may never be the same again! We are also treated to not one, but both I Spit on Your Graves - the original from the 1970s and the new remake of a gritty film which may be disturbing to some but nonetheless empowering.

The other titles released this week from our genre may not be as beloved, but they are worth mentioning for the completists out there. Maybe they make better sense when viewed in the safety of one's home.

Lr's The Blu Room: Paranormal Activity 2 Blu-Ray
Paranormal Activity 2 (Blu-Ray)Paramount Home Entertainment2010/Rated R & Unrated/91 & 98 minsList Price $39.99 – Available February 8, 2011You know how it goes: movie makes a ton of money, Hollywood figures, “let's make another one.” In the case of Paranormal Activity, it was a phenomenal success having been acquired by Paramount/Dreamworks for $350,000, ultimately earning $194 million at the box-office worldwide. Oren Peli's independent supernatural horror film is one of the most profitable movies every made based on return on investment. The weekend the film opened nationwide, it managed to beat the latest installment of Saw, another horror series that also originally began as a small independent outing. Sprague Graydon (TV's “24”) makes a more convincing lead as Katie's sister Kristi. Though Peli's film featured a handful of effective scares, it failed to work for me personally. Movies with irritating characters who react to bizarre situations in the dumbest way possible tend to annoy me. While...

Paranormal Activity 2 Review
Paranormal Activity 2 Directed by: Tod Williams Written by: Michael R. Perry, Christopher Landon, Tom Pabst (screenplay), Michael R. Perry (story) Starring: Molly Ephraim, Sprague Grayden, Brian Boland Paranormal Activity 2 is inferior to its predecessor — few sequels aren’t. I could rag on it for regurgitating the ideas and scenarios that made the original such a memorable theater experience, but what’s more interesting to me is where it goes right. Very few people awaited this found footage follow-up with any degree of anticipation, and with a conspicuous absence of the advance screenings that so stoked public interest in the first, Paranormal Activity 2 was, to all appearances, shaping up to be an unmitigated disaster. Turns out it was plain bad marketing. PA2 might actually be the most conceptually creative sequel since J.J. Abram’s Star Trek reboot. Like that film, this is chronologically a prequel, with the ill-fated original stars,...

Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
Directed by: Tod Williams

Written by: Michael R. Perry, Christopher B. Landon, Tom Pabst

Cast: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Sprague Grayden, Molly Ephraim, Tim Clemens

The problems of Kristi Rey and her small San Diego family are just beginning.

Kristi has just born a new son named Hunter, and the numerous video clips of Hunter's initial days, along with her husband Dan and step-daughter Ali, show a reasonably typical and well-adjusted family. Time passes, and Hunter grows some hair and manages his first baby steps. It's a happy time for all involved.

Things start to go awry after a curious break-in. Every room in the house is reduced to messy shambles. Dresser drawers are pulled out, paintings and pictures yanked from walls, garbage strewn about the home, the works - yet nothing is stolen. Whoever (or 'whatever', muahaha) broke in seemed only intent on making a mess. This...

Paranormal Activity 2 and Missed Chances: A Movie Review
Guest blogger Ed Sum has some insightful things to say about the latest Paranormal Activity film, which released in theatres this weekend. Have a listen:

Director: Tod Williams.

Writer: Michael R. Perry.

If there was ever a time a movie is looking like it’s stalled, Paranormal Activity 2 is one that needs help moving along. Even on a racetrack, what is heard is not just the sound of deafening engines; it is that of a sputtering vehicle.

What is wrong with this film is in its execution. There are six locked cameras and a roaming one. To watch them all is as exciting as working graveyard shift in security for the Sears Tower. Is it over yet? Better yet, can one sit down and read a book instead of keeping an eye on everything?

There are better ways to pace this film, like splitting the screen to show several cameras at one time.

Review: Paranormal Activity 2
This is the Pure Movies review of Paranormal Activity 2, starring Katie Featherstone, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Sprague Grayden, Molly Ephriam, and directed by Tod Williams. Reviewed by Suki Ferguson. Part of the thrill of Paranormal Activity’s debut last autumn was that no-one had a very clear idea of what to expect from it. Everyone heard rumours that it was scary, but it looked so budget that this hardly seemed credible. The surprise that followed was a nasty one, but in the best possible way. A sequel therefore has two handicaps from the word go: firstly, the audience already knows what the jeopardy is, and how any havoc will be wrought. Secondly, the success of the original film was so great that the law of diminishing returns seems almost inevitable.

Paranormal Activity 2

Directed by Tod Williams

Starring Sprague Grayden, Katie Featherston, Brian Boland, Molly Ephram, Micah Sloat

Paramount Pictures

Release date: October 22, 2010

It should be noted that a majority of this review was typed on a smartphone while sitting in the theater waiting for something to happen. Okay not really, but it could have been done that way given the amount of down time viewers have between scary parts of Paranormal Activity 2.

It came as no surprise that after the original ultra-low budget original film made millions worldwide that Hollywood would try to capture lightning in a bottle a second time with a sequel. While others have done the same before with weak results (Blair Witch anyone?), it's likely Paranormal Activity 2 will get the same reaction as the first... because it Is the same as the first.

The first important detail the previews left out is that this sequel is,...

Plot: Someone breaks in to a family’s house. This leads the family to install security cameras around the house and the footage that is captured leads them to think there is a demon in the house.

Who’S It For? The type of scares are very similar to the first Paranormal Activity, so if that worked for you, this one should as well. There are some story elements in the first that carry over so I recommend seeing the original first.

Overall

Second verse, same as the first … almost. Does everyone remember Katie? Well, she has a sister. Things start off in Paranormal Activity 2 in a nice,...

Without an inch of exaggeration,...

Paranormal Activity 2 Review
Paranormal Activity 2 is the Prequel / Update to last years blockbuster hit Paranormal Activity. In this film we get a background on what led to the events in the first film. We have the two characters from the first film Katie & Micah and also Katie’s family…her sister, brother-in-law, niece, nephew, their dog, niece’s boyfriend and of course the Demonic force with a bit more attitude this time around. This was filmed in the same first person perspective as the first one with footage from security cameras. It has a bit more shock value than the first, but I don’t think it really surpasses the first film scare wise.

The people behind Paranormal Activity 2 clearly learned a lesson from the debacle of Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows; they’ve hewed scrupulously close to the original film in style and tone. The result is probably the...

Movie Review: "Paranormal Activity 2"
Seen on: October 21, 2010

The players: Director: Tod Williams, Writer: Michael R. Perry, Cast: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Molly Ephraim, Sprague Grayden

Facts of interest: Budget estimated at around $2.8 million.

The plot: Weird stuff is happening in a family home in California.

Our thoughts: It only took one year for a sequel to Oren Peli’s excellent hit horror flick “Paranormal Activity” to arrive in theaters, and now “Paranormal Activity 2” is already en route to box office glory. Sure, this second installment boasts a decent level of suspense and a series of unexpected loud noises, but at the end of the day, it’s by far not as captivating or surprising as its scary predecessor.

Paranormal Activity 2 Review
Perhaps it is impossible to capture lightning in a bottle, but do not tell Paramount Pictures that because they damn near did it. Paranormal Activity 2 may not relish in the “Demand It!” campaign that made its forebear such a hit, but in many ways, the film is equal to the task of giving you the midnight willies and providing a handful of scares that will make the entire theater gasp. This feels less like something born of the success of the first film and slapped together, but as if they took notes and cues from audiences, and gave them an extra helping of what they wanted. More scares spaced throughout that begin early, a better and larger cast of characters, and a storyline that builds onto the existing premise. The only fumble is the abrupt end, which feels more like a whimper than the bang at the end of the first.

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
A scene from Paranormal Activity 2

Photo: Paramount Pictures A year ago Paranormal Activity was the $11,000 film that could and I absolutely loved it. Made on a minuscule budget, the film went on to make over $107 million at the domestic box-office and a sequel was all but inevitable. Thirteen months later Paranormal Activity 2 is here, intent on copying the home video formula that made the first film such a success. Using props such as a German Shepherd and an infant, this film takes advantage of familiar horror film cliches for its scares rather than what felt like innovative storytelling with the original. Granted, the sequel does have its share of jump-enducing moments, but beyond that this isn't anything more than just a copy of any number of films we've seen using first person camerawork to tell its story.

The first film, written and directed by Oren Peli, centered on...
