Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Finally Went to Its Darkest Place Yet on Friday’s Pivotal Episode
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” episode, “I Never Want to See Josh Again.”]

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has never shied away from its title as a way to examine what issues that a person might have that other people might label as “crazy.” Even before the series aired, co-creator, executive producer, and star Rachel Bloom was clear that — despite the rom-com trope of a woman dropping everything to follow a man — mental health would be addressed in some way.

“When you are truly obsessed and in love with someone in a way that you are stalking them, you are not going from being super happy about yourself to that,” Bloom said at the Television Critics Association press tour panel for the show in 2015. “Chances are there is some level of depression or anxiety. So we knew we wanted to start with a character who was in a bad place and was then going to look at Josh Chan as an escape instead of looking within herself for the solution…...

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Boss Explains Rebecca's Sad Choice: 'We Knew She Was Going to Bottom Out'
Warning: The post contains spoilers from Friday’s episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Rebecca Bunch’s journey hit rock bottom this week on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, with tragic consequences. After retreating home to avoid the mess she made in West Covina, Rebecca actually had a nice time bonding with her domineering mother Naomi… until she discovered Naomi had been spiking her strawberry milkshakes with anti-anxiety pills. With nowhere left to turn, Rebecca ended up on a plane back to California — and downed an entire bottle of pills before weakly telling the flight attendant, “I need help.”

Lisa Kudrow in The Comeback (2005)
Recap: 'The Comeback' - 'Valerie Cooks in the Desert'
Lisa Kudrow in The Comeback (2005)
"Valerie Cooks in the Desert" was an episode of "The Comeback" where even a fart joke was sad. A conversation between an HBO executive and Valerie interrupted by noises from Mickey in the bathroom was low-level humor at best, but quickly revealed itself to be something more: a consequence of Mickey's cancer. For a comedy, "The Comeback" has certainly had its melancholy moments, but this episode kept ratcheting up the sadness. That culminated in a shot of a note Val wrote to her husband Mark. It was sad not just because of its contents ("I was late. Hopefully not too late.") nor the circumstances (Val was late because of reshoots delayed by Paulie G.), but also because Jane, Valerie's producer, picked up the private, folded note and held it up for the camera to see. There's more sadness ahead, at least if Jane uses all the footage she's gathered. That...

Enlightened (2011)
Video: Enlightened's Season 2 Trailer Has Arrived
Enlightened (2011)
It may not get quite as much buzz as fellow HBO comedies Girls and Veep, but I’m equally (maybe even slightly more) excited for the Jan. 13 return of Enlightened, Laura Dern and Mike White’s look at one slightly unhinged woman’s fight against The Man.

HBO recently released the Golden Globe-nominated series’ Season 2 trailer, which is set to the rousing tune of Fun’s “Some Nights,” and features the arrival of an investigative reporter played by Dermot Mulroney.

Enlightened (2011)
Enlightened Season (Series?) Finale: 5 Reasons HBO Needs to Renew This Laura Dern Vehicle
Enlightened (2011)
True confession: I’ve never truly forgiven HBO for canceling The Comeback — Lisa Kudrow’s scathing examination of the Hollywood machine and unflinching/unsettling look at basic human insecurity — that lasted for one brief, dazzling, and painfully hilarious season back in 2005. (All together now: “Note to self: After a long day at work, I don’t wanna see that!”)

Flash forward to 2011 — and more specifically to Monday night’s season finale of the network’s equally brilliant/wince-inducing/honest/infuriating Enlightened — and here I am ready to rage against the network for not yet committing to a second...

Enlightened (2011)
'Enlightened': Is Amy crazy or am I for not liking her?
Enlightened (2011)
I know I’m crazy. We’ll get to that.

Now that Dancing With the Stars is over, I was able to spend a Monday night with the second most illuminating show on television: HBO’s Enlightened. (I dare them to use that in a promo.)

I caught up with the first seven episodes over Thanksgiving weekend and found that my general reactions towards Laura Dern’s protagonist, Amy, often closely resembled those of Amy’s former assistant Krista (Sarah Burns, pictured), who makes the same terrible facial expression (also pictured, apologies) whenever Amy says something that attempts to equalize...

For Auld Lang Syne | "Mad Men" (S3/E4) Recap, "The Good News"
We barely knew you, 1964, and now "Mad Men" has rushed us through your holiday season to welcome 1965. That year, the Civil Rights movement will come to a head, from Bloody Sunday and more demonstrations in Selma and Montgomery, Ala., to the signing of the Civil Rights Act, and politics in general starts to change with the first American combat troops landing in Vietnam, the Social Security Act, the Voting Rights Act, etc. Culture-wise: The Beatles play Shea Stadium. Plus, Dylan goes electric! The world seems to spin even faster in 1965, but until then, we wait for the sea change with our advertising friends during the New Year's holidays, biding our time in another great episode, "The Good News," that features two of my favorite characters, Joan and Lane. Both are prominent figures this time, grappling with the feeling that they aren't in control of their lives anymore. When will things get better,...
