The Rose of Versailles Review: One Heroine Can’t Save the Monarchy
Image
The years leading up to the French Revolution offer a cinematic canvas of unparalleled drama, a world of gilded palaces and public discontent. The Rose of Versailles dives headfirst into this turmoil, but through a unique lens. It centers not on one, but two remarkable women whose lives intersect as history unravels.

We meet the young Austrian princess Marie Antoinette, destined to become the infamous queen of France. But her shadow and sworn protector is the film’s fictional heart: Commander Oscar François de Jarjayes.

Raised from birth as a man to secure her family’s military legacy, Oscar serves in the Royal Guard, her identity a known secret in the court. The film sets the stage for a grand story of duty, love, and identity, played out against the backdrop of a society about to tear itself apart.

Artistry in the Age of Excess

Before a single line of dialogue about revolution is uttered,...

10 Most Realistic Military Anime, Ranked
Image
Military fiction might not be the most common anime genre, but it is a prevalent one. Some of these are just as outlandish as other anime works, while others are far more grounded. Using tactics and wartime aspects, these anime recreate the most brutal aspects of war, and some of its most neglected elements.

Many military anime are part of major subgenres such as mecha and even the popular isekai anime genre, while others are firmly in more realistic settings and explore concepts from a Japanese perspective. Best of all, most of these can easily be streamed and may even be part of continuing franchises.

J Balvin Says Recording ‘Solo Leveling’ Debut Wasn’t Easy: ‘You Have to Be Precise and Disciplined’
Image
J Balvin officially made his anime debut as Hunters Guild Gate boss Kargalgan in Season 2 of “Solo Leveling,” and while the five-time Grammy award-winning singer isn’t new to jumping in the booth to record music, he told TheWrap that laying down voice tracks for the hit series was an entirely new demon.

“You have to be precise and disciplined — it needs a lot of discipline,” J Balvin told TheWrap right after finishing his first day of recording in New York. “Normally, when you do a song, you record, you listen, you talk with your boys, then you come back. It’s art, it’s a totally new vibe … You’re watching the video before it’s out. [In music,] you do a song, you then see the video. In this case, you already have the images there … You got to be extra focused and try to make the best lip sync and also [stay] in character.

10 Short Anime Where Every Fight Matters
Image
Several beloved anime span several seasons, but many of the most interesting series are proportionally shorter. These brief series are usually action-packed and fast-paced. This is likely to fit an entire cohesive story within a single season. Although some series are set to receive more content, they have comparatively fewer episodes than many of their peers, like Chainsaw Man.

Compact series occasionally struggle to introduce the audience to their respective universes. Yet a few succinct anime effortlessly establish and conclude their terrifying plots. Devilman Crybaby is widely renowned for creating a captivating but horrifying story with limited episodes. Many of anime's shorter series are more interesting and have higher stakes than their lengthier contemporaries.

“It was just too cold”: We Need to Thank Aleks Le for Saving ‘Solo Leveling’ from Being an Unfaithful and Boring Adaptation
Image
The battle between the sub and the dub versions is one of the longest ongoing duels in the history of anime. While this battle has been mostly won by the sub-version, there are a few instances where the dub version has prevailed. Recently, it was seen in the second episode of the Solo Leveling anime series Season 2, “Solo Leveling: Arise from the Shadow.“

Solo Leveling Season 2 | Credit: A-1 Pictures

While the sub version tries its best to adapt the entirety of the manhwa into the anime’s story, it recently ignored a minor detail that was quite significant for Sung Jinwoo’s character. And although the sub version overlooked it, the dub version didn’t give up on that opportunity and made sure to include it in the episode, which in turn earned all the praise and appreciation.

Why Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Replaced Al's Original English Voice Actor
Image
Ah, "Fullmetal Alchemist." Hiromu Arakawa's breakout manga follows two alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone. They tried, and failed, to bring their dead mother Trisha back to life with alchemy — instead of regaining their mother, Ed lost his left leg and Al his whole body. (Ed then gave up his right arm to bind Al's soul to a suit of armor.). Now, only the mythic elixir can help the two brothers heal each other both in body and spirit.

It's one of my favorite anime and a key reason I think about it so often is because it's really two anime in one. Studio Bones adapted Arakawa's original "Fullmetal Alchemist" manga twice, first in 2003 then again in 2009 for a second, more faithful anime known in the West as "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood."

The two shows complement each other by being so different.

Solo Leveling Adr Director Had One Demand from Sung Jinwoo’s Voice Actor that Helped Him Avoid Any Harsh Comparisons
Image
The comparison between the dubbed version and the subbed version of an anime series is one of the most serious topics in the industry. Fans have always compared the two different dubbings to find out which is better, and Solo Leveling was certainly not an exception to this. However, the series somehow managed to satisfy both categories of fans.

Solo Leveling Anime | Credit: A-1 Pictures

The unique story of Solo Leveling follows the adventures of Sung Jinwoo, the weakest hunter, and his struggles to become the strongest hunter in a world filled with monsters. Thus, the comparisons between the dubbed and subbed versions of Solo Leveling were obviously going to be judged by the performances of the voice actors of Sung Jinwoo.

In the Japanese version, Sung Jinwoo is voiced by Taito Ban, and in the English version, Aleks Le takes on this responsibility. In a recent interview, the English...

10 Most Powerful Families in Anime
Image
The most powerful families in anime can be complicated, to say the least. Sometimes they're on the same side, other times they're not. Families like the Briefs in Dragon Ball have stuck together through thick and thin, and even though Vegeta can be a curmudgeon, his wife Bulma knows exactly how to handle him. Other families, like the Uchiha in Naruto, aren't as intimate but are equally, if not more, powerful. They act as a giant political force, controlling and influencing people around them to achieve their goals as a monolith.

The best families in anime don't have to be related by blood either, as seen by the Forgers in Spy x Family. They're a found family that chooses to be together, showing that not all bonds have to be determined by genes. No matter if an anime family is one cohesive unit, or a mismatch of characters that hate each other,...

These Warm and Heartfelt Romance Anime Will Make You Swoon
Image
Romance is one of the most popular and enduring anime genres. There are many types of romance, and they vary in tropes and tone. Romantic comedies are very popular in shonen anime and contemporary shojo. Historical romance tends to be paired with high fantasy anime.

Fluffy romance isn't exactly a subgenre of romance; it's more to do with the tone of the story, and the intensity of the plot stakes. Fluffy romance is a story about love for love's sake, and they tend to be very optimistic stories. The stakes may be lower, but that doesn't mean the plot isn't poignant; they tend to have couples that work together through their struggles and personal development.

Best Tsundere Anime Characters, Ranked
Image
The tsundere character archetype is a popular way to design an anime character in any genre, from romance to action to slice-of-life. Tsunderes are one of the most prominent -dere types, with each -dere type describing how a certain anime character behaves around their friends and particularly around their love interests. While a kuudere is aloof and a dandere is timid, a tsundere is a hothead with a hidden sweet side under their tough exterior.

Tsunderes, more than the other archetypes, are about contrast and duality. They are not bullies or jerks at heart, even if they can be a little abrasive or rough at first. Such characters are actually pretty vulnerable, hiding their true feelings and only showing their affection when they feel safe enough. Falling in love with a tsundere means looking past their punkish side and enticing them to lower their prickly defenses to start a real relationship,...
