Producers Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are bringing the story of Ruth and Boaz into the present with R&b, a modern-day retelling of the biblical love story, and the chemistry is palpable in a new photo of the titular couple.
Directed by Alanna Brown (Trees of Peace) and written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan (Play’d), the upcoming film is part of Franklin and Tyler Perry Studios’ creative partnership with Netflix, in which they’ll produce faith-based films under a multi-year and multi-picture first-look deal. R&b is executive-produced by Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, and Bart Lipton.
“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” Perry told Netflix. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time when the world seems to be growing colder every day, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good.

Kerry Washington is a formidable commander as she leads the titular, historic World War II battalion in Netflix’s new trailer (above) for the forthcoming The Six Triple Eight, written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry.
The drama, available in select theaters starting Dec. 6 and due on the streamer Dec. 20, is inspired by the real-life story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the sole all-Black, all-female Women’s Army Corps unit, the members of which were tasked with sorting the massive backlog of undelivered mail for U.S. service members in England and France.
“Ladies, we have been ordered to provide hope,” Washington’s commanding officer Major Charity Adams decrees to her troops in the clip. “The soldiers have not heard from their loved ones and their loved ones have not heard from them. When there is no mail, there is low morale.”

Almost a full century after the end of World War II, new stories about the quiet heroism of everyday individuals continue to come to light. Now Tyler Perry is tackling the war with his new film The Six Triple Eight, the story of the war’s only Women’s Army Corps unit of color, which stars Kerry Washington. Perry wrote and directed the project and produced it alongside Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion contributed to the war effort in a unique way: by sorting through a three-year backlog of mail (17 million pieces of it!) that hadn’t been delivered to American soldiers far from home. In the face of discrimination and a vast, unfamiliar country divided by global conflict, these 855 women brought hope to the front lines.

Kerry Washington as an army captain delivers a rousing speech to the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to battle overseas during the Second World War in the teaser trailer (below) for Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight from writer, director and producer Tyler Perry.
“This is our mission. And we will not fail,” Major Charity Adams (Washington) declares quayside as the 855 Black women and women of color of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion march forward at her command to board a ship taking them to battle.
Their mission was to sort through a three-year backlog of mail — 17 million letters in all — yet to be delivered to American soldiers overseas, to restore morale on the front lines.
The Netflix biopic is part of an effort to give the 6888th battalion belated recognition for their heroism as they overcame discrimination to complete their letter-posting duties well ahead of schedule.

Kerry Washington Is a WWII Officer in Tyler Perry’s Historical ‘The Six Triple Eight’ — Watch Teaser
Kerry Washington is traveling back in time for Tyler Perry’s historical “Six Triple Eight.”
The highly-anticipated Netflix feature is written and directed by Perry, who based the film on the article “Fighting A Two-Front War” by Kevin M. Hymel. The piece was published in WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media.
“The Six Triple Eight” is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Washington portrays Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The group, which consisted of 855 women, was tasked with sorting through a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their loved ones at home. The women of the Battalion received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2022 after President Joe Biden signed the bill to honor them.

Tyler Perry is heading to war — World War II, that is. The prolific writer-director has boarded his next feature film with “Six Triple Eight,” a new period drama coming to Netflix, it was announced Wednesday.
Based on an article written by journalist Kevin M. Hymel for WWII History Magazine, “Six Triple Eight” tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion active during World War II. The group, which consisted of 855 women, was tasked with sorting through a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their loved ones at home, while struggling with discrimination and violence in war-torn Europe. The women of the Battalion received the Congressional Gold Medal this year after President Joe Biden signed the bill to honor them.
Perry will write and direct “Six Triple Eight” and produce along with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland for Tyler Perry Studios.
