Toutouyoutou: Season One – Review
Image
Toutouyoutou on MHz Choice

“Toutouyoutou” (pronounced “Two-Two-You-Two) is a comedy series set in a middle-class French suburb in the 1980s. The main women are either married or divorced. All the men work for a pioneering aeronautics company, focused on keeping up with, if not outpacing, the Americans, Russians and Brits in technological development. Everyone is getting along comfortably until a wild card is introduced. Jane (Alexia Barlier), a super attractive, outgoing Yank comes to town, introducing aerobics to the area just as it’s starting to gain popularity elsewhere. Despite her outward friendliness, suspicion starts to grow that her motives may not be as innocent as they seem. The one to have the most nagging doubts is Karine (Claire Dumas), who emerges as the main protagonist.

All the men find Jane alluring. The women want to be like her, sign up for her classes and start forming friendships.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi movie review: American mercenary
Michael Bay propagandizes for a right-wing idea of “true America,” seething with disdain for anyone who isn’t a former elite soldier turned mercenary. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a Michael Bay fan

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

This purportedly true account of the 2012 “Battle of Benghazi” opens with American military contractors Jack Silva (John Krasinski: The Wind Rises, Monsters University), who has just arrived in town, and his old buddy Tyrone “Rone” Woods (James Badge Dale: The Walk, Parkland) bluffing their way past a roadblock by armed Libyans. It doesn’t matter what side the Libyans are on; in the chaos that erupted after Gaddafi’s death: the point is that they are Libyans — suspiciously lawless violent folk, that is, who cannot even get their own nation under control — and not Americans.

New 13 Hours Movie Received Mixed Reviews From Major Critics
Paramount Pictures delivered their new action/drama movie, "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" into theaters today, January 15th, 2016, and all the reviews have been turned in from the major, top movie critics, and it turns out that it was a pretty mixed bag with their opinions on it, receiving an overall 49 score out of a possible 100 score across 29 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film features: Alexia Barlier, David Costabile, David Denman, James Badge Dale, John Krasinski, Max Martini, Pablo Schreiber and Toby Stephens. We've added comments from a couple of the critics, below. Joe Dziemianowicz from the New York Daily News, gave it a pretty damn good 80 grade, stating: "Sure, Bay indulges some signature cinematic fetishes. But he shows restraint with the slowed-down, sexed-up shots. War is gritty here, not glamorous. Result: characters, stakes and emotions feel authentic — all the more so thanks to terrific actors including...

On Mubi Off #3: "Shopping" & "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi"
On Mubi Off is a bi-weekly column exploring two films: one currently available on Mubi in the United States, and the other screening offsite (in theaters, on VOD, Blu-ray/DVD, etc).On MUBIShopping (Paul W.S. Anderson, 1994) A telling exchange from an early scene in writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's 1994 debut Shopping:"What's prison taught you, Billy?""Don't get caught." Yet the film that follows is, in large part, all about getting caught—about being swept up into the Hollywood big leagues, using this enjoyable, eye-catching display of kinetic prowess as proof of talent. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with such calling card features, though they're often ascribed cynical motivations, and you can't necessarily say you've seen one until the artist behind them has got a few more projects under his-or-her belt. The aesthetic impulses and inclinations mostly become clear in retrospect. And from our current vantage point, you...
