We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Where do movie ideas come from? For some filmmakers, it's simply a lightning bolt of an idea from nowhere. For others, it's a brand-mandated piece of intellectual property. And for some, all they have to do is take a look - for it is, indeed, in a book.

Some of our greatest and best movies are adaptations of books, from "Gone With the Wind" to "The Godfather" to even "Die Hard." It makes sense from the studio perspective -- there's mitigated risk and a built-in audience -- and it makes sense from a creative perspective, as it's interesting to see an artist find corners of their voice they couldn't on their own (sometimes making something better than the book). And we've got more book-to-movie adaptations coming down the pike to enjoy and analyze.

So, for all future film forecasters, please...

Amazon MGM Studios Sets International Distribution Deal With Sony Pictures
Image
Amazon MGM Studios has found its partner for its ambitious international theatrical exhibition plans in Sony Pictures. The two studios have struck a multiyear distribution deal that will see Sony release films “After the Hunt,” “Mercy,” “Crime 101” and “Project Hail Mary” overseas.

The deal comes as Amazon’s international distribution deal with Warner Bros. Pictures ends. After the aforementioned slate of films has been released, Amazon MGM will release its titles overseas directly, but the deal gives the studio time to set its international plans.

Indeed, Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” will start the partnership off with an Oct. 10 limited release before going wide on Oct. 17. The psychological drama was given a prime awards season date and stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny. Longtime Guadagnino collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are also returning as composers.

Then on Jan. 23, 2026, Timur Bekmambetov’s sci-fi thriller “Mercy” will release.

Sony to Release Select Amazon MGM Movies Overseas, Beginning With Luca Guadagnino’s ‘After the Hunt’
Image
Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Sony to release a handful of its upcoming high-profile movies at the international box office as it goes about building its own foreign operation.

Following those releases, Amazon MGM will directly distribute theatrical titles in territories overseas where it launches its own offices, with Sony supporting the studio in other international markets. This doesn’t include the next James Bond movie, which will be handled overseas by Universal.

Director Luca Guadagnino‘s psychological thriller After the Hunt, which opens in select theaters on Oct. 10 before expanding on Oct. 17, stars Julia Roberts as a woman who must confront her own past when a prominent student (Ayo Edebiri) levels accusations against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield). Image
Exclusive: Author Don Winslow might not be the retiring type, after all.

The prolific bestselling crime novelist “paused” his retirement to write a new collection of short novels titled The Final Score. It also coincides with the beginning of Presidents' Day weekend.

The studio behind Crime 101 has reportedly committed to Feb. 13, 2026, despite it being the same day that Emerald Fennell's controversial Wuthering Heights' adaptation opens in theaters, and a highly curious untitled MCU Phase 6 movie. This release date takes advantage of the long holiday weekend that often presents moviegoers with free time to visit the theater. The addition of Crime 101 to the...

Halle Berry Said Chris Hemsworth "Stood Up For Her" Filming 'Crime 101'

Women in Hollywood often speak about how they have to work two times as hard as their male counterparts to demand respect. ‘A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro On Finally Meeting The “Thoughtful And Wonderful” Joan Baez And A Sweet Moment With Ariana Grande
Image
Last week, Monica Barbaro met Joan Baez in person for the first time. For Barbaro, this was a big step in an extraordinary journey that first began in 2020, back when Barbaro couldn’t play guitar at all, but sang at her audition to play Baez in James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Fast-forward five years, and Barbaro has successfully, and beautifully, embodied Baez’s story and performed her music—with the Oscar and SAG nominations to prove it.

She’d spoken with Baez on the phone before, right before shooting a scene where she would perform “Blowin’ in the Wind” opposite Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. But now, at last, the two women have met at Baez’s San Francisco concert on February 8th. Here, as she wraps up shooting on Bart Layton’s new heist movie Crime 101, in which she stars alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chris Hemsworth and Barry Keoghan,...

Image
With a total of eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, A Complete Unknown has taken its place as a major Academy frontrunner —. One of those eight nominations was for Monica Barbaro’s turn as Joan Baez.

Barbaro told Deadline of her shock and surprise shortly after the announcement Thursday morning. “This was really unexpected,” she said. “I was trying not to pay attention to it because there are so many phenomenal actors performances this year and I’ve just been like, I’m not going to overthink it. I’m not going to expect any of it.”

However, for Barbaro it was afternoon as she is currently in London shooting interiors for Crime 101, Bart Layton’s upcoming heist movie, also starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan and Mark Ruffalo. The film is set in LA and exteriors were shot there.

The Batman Star Addresses Chances of a Joker Return in Part II
Image
The Batman Part II continues the saga involving Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight and could potentially see a confrontation between Gotham's chief protector and his long-time rival, the Joker. However, the man who played the Clown Prince of Crime claims he still doesn't know if his character will appear in the sequel.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Batman star Barry Keoghan addressed whether he'll reprise his role as the Joker in Part II. Though it's been widely reported Keoghan will return to play the nihilistic criminal in Part II, the Irish actor claims he hasn't heard anything about a potential feature. "It's a big one, but I am going to say that, if the opportunity came about, yes, I'd love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it," he said "But I have not been contacted, I've not heard anything."

As rampant speculation emerges on who might be the next version of the spy most recently played by Daniel Craig, it seems the James Bond reboot is also facing an uphill battle behind the scenes. The English filmmaker seems to be the right fit for the job, after tackling several acclaimed and award-winning projects, including the crime drama Widows and the miniseries Small Axe from Amazon. Chris Hemsworth & Mark Ruffalo Reunite First Look at New Thriller Crime 101
Image
Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth are reuniting on screen for a new crime thriller from American Animals writer and director, Bart Layton. Crime 101 follows Hemsworth as detective Lou Lubesnick, who's attempting to track down a meticulous jewel thief. Via Digital Spy (and X/Twitter users @____ee____ and @hemsnews), the photos showcase Hemsworth as detective Lou Lubesnick in between takes during the film's shoot in Los Angeles. Venom 3 Director Put Tom Hardy in a Tuxedo as Response to James Bond Rumors
Image
Unless he comes back for a multiverse appearance in the future, Tom Hardy is wrapping up his run in the role of Eddie Brock with Venom: The Last Dance. Meanwhile, director Kelly Marcel is hoping to see the actor next suit up as 007.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marcel reacted to rumors that she was on the list of directors in consideration to direct Bond 26. According to the rumor mill, Marcel is up for the job alongside Edward Berger, David Michod, Yann Demange, and Bart Layton. She described it as "humbling" to be a part of that conversation, especially when considering that such a gig would be able to make history, given how there's never been a female director for the franchise. She also agreed that Hardy wearing a tuxedo in Venom: The Last Dance brings James Bond to mind, hinting that she worked in the suit because of the rumors.

‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Director Kelly Marcel on Michelle Williams’ Absence and Those James Bond Rumors
Image
Kelly Marcel and Tom Hardy are fitting dance partners for Eddie Brock and Venom’s final go-round in Venom: The Last Dance. The longtime screenwriter turned director has been friends with Hardy since the early 2000s, as they both worked across the street from one another in Southwest London. Marcel was employed at a video rental store, and after hitting it off one day, she soon started writing scenes for Hardy’s theater company that was run out of the first floor of Battersea’s The Latchmere pub. Eventually, Hardy brought Marcel in to do uncredited rewrites on Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (2008), something she’d again do years later on George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

In the intervening years, she launched her career by selling Terra Nova to Amblin and Fox. It would go on to become TV’s most expensive series at the time, and despite creating the concept,...
