6 best Netflix fantasy shows, ranked
Image
When most people think of successful fantasy TV shows, HBO and Prime Video are probably the first two networks that come to mind. They’ve both upped their investments in the fantasy genre lately with new seasons of House of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, and more, but Netflix isn’t that far behind.

There are some great Netflix fantasy shows to stream right now! Since Game of Thrones, Netflix has quietly assembled an epic lineup of fantasy shows. There were so many shows that could have made this list, but I wanted to choose a very small, select group of shows that fantasy fans need to watch if they haven’t yet.

So, let’s get the ranking of the best Netflix fantasy shows started with Shadow and Bone.

6. Shadow and Bone Shadow and Bone. (L to R) Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Jessie Mei Li...

Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman miniseries finally gets promising update one year later
Image
Things have definitely been moving very slow for Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman-produced miniseries The Gray House. The show was first announced to be in the works back in 2022, and there really hasn't been a ton of information about the production and its status. Now, we finally have a promising update.

A little over a year ago in April 2024, Variety shared that the historical drama would be opening the Monte-Carlo Television Festival that year, which took place in June. Then a few months after that in September, Deadline revealed that some big names in the music industry have contributed to the soundtrack. We'll get to that in a moment. Though since then, almost a year later, any updates including a release date or even streaming home have not been shared. Until now.

Where Was Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Filmed? Every Major Location Explained
Image
It's easy to be skeptical of movies that are based on video games and gaming franchises, as history has proven that they are pretty hit-or-miss. However, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" was one of 2023's best fantasy flicks, with the film taking viewers on an epic adventure through the Forgotten Realms while simultaneously turning the universe of the complex "Dungeons & Dragons" RPG into an accessible, family-friendly blockbuster. You don't have to roll some dice at the behest of a Dungeon Master to appreciate the movie, but viewers who enjoy getting sucked into a campaign will appreciate its deep-cut references to the D&d lifestyle.

Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" is a joyous big-screen fantasy flick that provides an alternative to grimdark shows like "House of the Dragon." The story follows the valiant bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine) and a group of...

The Forgotten Realms: Live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series in the works at Netflix
Image
Deadline reports that Netflix has scooped up The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series from Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Drew Crevello (WeCrashed).

You may recall that the Dungeons & Dragons series was originally developed for Paramount+, which gave it an eight-episode, straight-to-series order in 2023. The project was originally overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice), and Crevello later joined as executive producer and showrunner. However, it didn’t move forward and Hasbro Entertainment began the process of shopping the series elsewhere.

Crevello wrote the pilot for The Forgotten Realms and will serve as showrunner. He will also executive produce alongside Levy and Dan Levine through their 21 Laps Entertainment banner. It’s still early days, but it could launch a Dungeons & Dragons universe for Netflix.

5 Canceled Fantasy TV Shows That Ended On A Cliffhanger
Image
Fantasy show cancelations are always disappointing for dedicated fans, but it's especially frustrating when series are cut short on the heels of cliffhangers. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence for streaming shows, especially within the fantasy genre. Numerous fantasy shows have been canceled before completing their original plans, and in some cases, this means major incidents remain unresolved. This can be seen with several of Netflix's recent projects, though it's not the only platform to have this problem.

Fantasy shows tend to have intricate plots, which makes it difficult to end a season on a conclusive note, unless it's the final outing. If there's more story to tell, projects attempt to build momentum ahead of another season. This makes things worse when they're unexpectedly canceled, as there are huge questions and storylines that never get addressed properly.

Musical Stars Align For Civil War Drama ‘The Gray House’ With Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Yolanda Adams, Lainey Wilson, Killer Mike & More On The Soundtrack
Image
Exclusive: The musical stars are coming out for Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman’s The Gray House.

Leslie Greif opened the series’ playlist exclusively for Deadline and there is serious star wattage in there, including an original song performed by country music legend Willie Nelson, which closes the series. Elsewhere, Shania Twain, Killer Mike and Yolanda Adams are among those to feature, and Jon Bon Jovi co-writes one of the show’s songs.

“My idea was, instead of having one [end] title song, I’m going to have eight different songs by Grammy-winning artists and in different genres of music, which are written for our show and are going to tell a story of that episode,” said Greif, who exec produces and wrote the script with Darrell Fetty, and John Sayles.

Nelson’s “Heart of America” was penned by Erin Enderlin, Jim ‘Moose’ Brown and Jeff Fahey. It closes the limited series,...

Hugh Grant Explains 'What Went Wrong' With Dungeons & Dragons Movie
Image
Hollywood icon Hugh Grant explains what went wrong with 2023's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Grant discussed the 2023 fantasy adventure, which he referred to as "such a good film," before noting that the lackluster response and weak promotion of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was the "biggest mystery." Grant asked, "Why didn't anyone do market research before? I think that's what went wrong: Basically, people just thought, I don't want to see a film about this game. Why had no one asked the public?"

Honor Among Thieves 2 Can Resolve A Major Story By Adding A Missing Dungeons & Dragons Class
Image
Adding a missing Dungeons & Dragons class could allow Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 to resolve a major storyline. Despite updates on the Dungeons & Dragons sequel being few and far between, the possibilities for its story are numerous due to its connection to the tabletop games' lore. Honor Among Thieves only explored a few small corners of the vast, official world of D&d and really focused on just a few kinds of characters and classes audiences are familiar with.

The film showcased many classic D&d tropes and character outlines, such as Edgin Davis, (Chris Pine) a charming and cunning bard, and Holga, (Michelle Rodriguez) a powerful and tough barbarian. Audiences witnessed many moments that would be at home in any D&d game, including failing to distract a set of guards. That being said, Honor Among Thieves 2 still has the potential to expand on these characters' journeys...

As A Shadow and Bone Fan, It Breaks My Heart To Say I Don't Want A Comic Book Continuation
Image
With so many canceled shows continuing in comic or graphic novel form, its safe to say Shadow and Bone is not exempt from the conversation. Shadow and Bone was canceled in November 2023, barely a week after Netflix released a connected game titled "Enter The Fold" during Geeked Week. And while a comic run would be a good way to see the show safely continued, it breaks my heart as a comic fan to say that a Shadow and Bone comic book continuation wouldnt workand its not what the show deserves.

Shadow and Bone was a fantasy TV show that premiered in 2021 and centered around the discovery of Sun Summoner Alina Starkov and her countrys political divide. Its second season arrived in 2023 after much anticipation. The adaptation combined the trilogy Shadow and Bone with the duology Six of Crows, both written by author and executive producer Leigh Barudgo.

Unfortunately, both Shadow and Bone...

If Honor Among Thieves 2 Does Happen, It Must Deliver On The First Movie's Most Exciting Promise
Image
Honor Among Thieves 2 must explore the threat of Szass Tam for a satisfying sequel. Szass Tam's power as a lich and necromancer offers ample storytelling opportunities. Focusing on Szass Tam would fix the first film's issue of lackluster villain development.

If Honor Among Thieves 2 does happen, then the movie must deliver on the most exciting promise made during the first film. Honor Among Thieves has become a highly beloved film despite its initial box office failure, with a critical Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% and an audience score of 93%. Despite the film's popularity, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 updates have been slow to arrive, creating doubt about whether the film will get its sequel or if its story will be left unfinished.

While the initial film does wrap up a lot of the major character stories, Honor Among Thieves' ending still left a few things open for a sequel film to explore.

‘The Gray House’ Actors Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Vereen Sound the Trump Alarm: ‘We Could Have a Convicted Felon as Our President’
Image
“The Gray House” actors Mary-Louise Parker and Ben Vereen want people to wake up. Especially before the November election.

“I think they aren’t as horrified as they should be. We could potentially have a convicted felon as our President! There is a real lack of alarm,” Parker tells Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the premiere of the Civil War series.

“Such ugliness was unleashed in our country by our previous President. It just spread, like some kind of virus. It gave people a sense of agency about their ignorance, their racism. It’s hard.”

“It’s frightening! People are not upset. There is a whole generation of ‘I don’t care,’” adds Vereen.

“There are scenes in this series that look just like the Jan. 6 [Capitol attack], don’t they. All of a sudden, it comes back into focus. You go: ‘Wow. It is happening again, now.’”

Morgan Freeman Talks ‘The Gray House,’ Rips Into Black History Month: ‘My History Is American History’
Image
Morgan Freeman isn’t a fan of Black History Month.

“I detest it. The mere idea of it. You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right,” he tells Variety.

“My history is American history. It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.”

Having exec produced Civil War series “The Gray House” alongside Lori McCreary through Revelations Entertainment, the past is very much on Freeman’s mind.

“If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you are bound to repeat it,” he says. During election year, this statement seems particularly poignant.

“Do you know this song? ‘To everything, there is a season.’ It really, really works in showbusiness.

New Stephen King Show Just Killed My Hopes For A Shadow & Bone Revival
Image
The cancellation of Shadow and Bone left fans disappointed with unresolved storylines. Actor Ben Barnes' commitment to The Institute makes a Shadow and Bone return uncertain, as the actor takes on a lead role in the Stephen King adaptation. Other Shadow and Bone stars like Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, and Daisy Head have also moved on to new projects, making a revival seem even less probable.

Stephen King's The Institute show kills any hope I had left for a Shadow and Bone revival. Shadow and Bone is a young adult fantasy show based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, and its popularity soared following its premiere in April 2021. Shadow and Bone gripped me from the beginning with a talented cast including Ben Barnes, Jessie Mei Li, and Archie Renaux. The show brought some of my favorite characters and relationships to life with a compelling narrative, making it a thrilling experience from start to finish.

Dungeons & Dragons TV series no longer moving forward at Paramount+
Image
A live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series was in development for Paramount+ and had even been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by the streaming service, but Deadline now reports that the project is no longer moving forward.

However, the Dungeons & Dragons series isn’t entirely dead, as Hasbro Entertainment will be shopping it to other potential buyers. It’s also said the series will receive a creative update which will be tackled by a new creative team. The version which was sold to Paramount+ was overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper), who wrote the pilot script and was going to direct the first episode. Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) was brought on to serve as executive producer and showrunner last year.

The report states that Hasbro remains committed to the Dungeons & Dragons TV series, meaning that it will likely be a matter of when, not if, the project emerges elsewhere.

Roland Joffe to Direct Mob-Centric JFK Assassination Film ‘November 1963: The Killing of a President’ (Exclusive)
Image
What really happened during the 48 hours leading up to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — at least according to mob bosses — is heading to the big screen in the upcoming film “November 1963: The Killing of a President.”

The mob’s version of events were passed down to Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana’s nephew, Nicholas Celozzi, by Sam’s brother, the late Joseph “Pepe” Giancana, who drove around with his brother Sam during those two days.

“The reason why there’s this fascination or anxiety is because people know that what they’ve heard so far doesn’t make sense,” Celozzi tells Variety of the ongoing interest in the circumstances surrounding JFK’s assassination, even 60 years later. “They keep talking about it because they’re waiting to hear something that makes more common sense.”

Celozzi, whose film producing and writing credits include “The Legitimate Wiseguy,” “The Class” and...

‘The Gray House’ Civil War Spy Drama Series From Kevin Costner to Open Monte-Carlo Television Festival
Image
“The Gray House,” the Kevin Costner-produced limited series about a female spy ring during the Civil War, will open Monaco’s 63rd annual Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June.

The six-episode limited series tells the hidden-history tale of four Southern women — a Virginia socialite and her mother, a formerly enslaved Black woman and a high-end prostitute — who served as key espionage agents for the Union. The foursome are credited as unsung heroes who helped end the nation’s brutal cleavage in 1865. Mary-Louise Parker, Amethyst Davis, Daisy Head and Ben Vereen lead the ensemble cast.

Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary produce through their Revelations Entertainment banner alongside Costner’s Territory Pictures and Big Dreams Entertainment from Republic Pictures. Paramount Global Content Distribution is handling distribution of the series but it’s not yet clear where “Gray House” will land in the U.S.

“As a storyteller, I’ve always looked to history.

I'm Still Not Over What Happened To Genya Safin In Shadow And Bone Season 2
Image
Genya Safin is a key character in Shadow and Bone, but her TV adaptation falls short of her powerful arc in the novels. Tragic backstory of Genya, maimed by the Darkling, is shortened in the series, leaving out critical moments from the books. Genya's storyline suffers in season 2, with rushed character development and a lack of depth in relationships, ultimately ending in tragedy.

Genya Safin (Daisy Head) is a major character in season 2 of Netflix's Shadow and Bone, and though she has a strong and complete arc in the novels, her portrayal in the TV adaptation leaves something to be desired. Based on the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, the TV show of the same name premiered on Netflix in April 2021. Shadow and Bone features an ensemble cast of characters who belong to one of seven nations, constantly at odds with one another in a world known...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Is Even Better After Baldur’s Gate 3
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Between Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Baldur’s Gate 3, fans of the popular tabletop roleplaying game (Ttrpg) Dungeons & Dragons had a lot going for them in 2023. Both have a lot to offer longtime fans, and prove that the game can transcend mediums and still be thoroughly enjoyable. But what’s even more compelling about the love that Honor Among Thieves and Baldur’s Gate 3 have received is the fact that they’ve brought so many newcomers into the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Even if you don’t know a thing about D&d, Honor Among Thieves is such a fun movie to watch. The story makes this fantasy world accessible, and the cast does a great job of bringing the film’s chaotic but well-meaning band of misfits to life. There are plenty of easter eggs for D&d lovers,...

The Most Tragic 'Shadow and Bone' Character Was Barely Developed
Image
Shadow and Bone adapts Leigh Bardugo's books, delivering a story of magic, greed, personal growth, and romance. Though the story takes audiences through a unique fantasy world, the thing the show does best is the characters. Combining two of Bardugo's series, the show has even more characters to work with, leaving it full of interesting characters, including the religious criminal Inej (Amita Suman), the prince-turned-privateer Nikolai (Patrick Gibson), the immortal Darkling (Ben Barnes), and so many more. Yet, with all the fascinating people in the story, many don't get the time they deserve. In fact, the show sidelines one of the deepest and most tragic stories in the series. Genya Safin (Daisy Head) plays a pivotal role, but her dark history is brushed over in favor of the action. It is understandable with so much going on, but this denies Genya her journey, which exposes the worst of this fictional world.

'Shadow and Bone' Season 2 Did Wylan and Jesper Dirty
Image
The first season of Netflix's Shadow and Bone flawlessly encapsulates Alina Starkov's (Jessie Mei Li) wholesome "best friend to lover" arc with Mal (Archie Renaux), and even the delicate romance between Genya (Daisy Head) and David (Luke Pasqualino). With the first season being largely based on Leigh Bardugo's trilogy's first installment of the same name, these couples had a decent advantage. However, Season 2 is crammed with storylines from the trilogy's final two novels and random aspects of Six of Crows. Unfortunately, the Crows got the short end of the stick, with each couple losing their spark and burning chemistry on screen.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure which follows “A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021)
Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Three More Canceled at Netflix
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021)
When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.

Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.

Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.

Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.

Despite the freshman season garnering considerable buzz, Shadow & Bone Season 2 launched earlier this year to little fanfare.

Based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina Starkov, who is now on the run.

The series stars Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik...

Honor Among Thieves 2 Wishlist: 15 Things From D&d It Absolutely Must Include
Image
Return of the Owlbear: Fans want to see the Owlbear make a comeback in a sequel to "Honor Among Thieves" due to its impressive onscreen presence and usefulness in battles. Beholders: The iconic Beholder creature should be included in "Honor Among Thieves 2" as a formidable foe that uses magic and cunning to challenge the party. Exploration of Different Settings: The sequel should go beyond the standard medieval setting and explore other "Dungeons & Dragons" settings like Ravenloft or Eberron to make the world feel more diverse and immersive.

If a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ever happens, these are the things from the popular tabletop RPG that it must include. While the fantasy film didn't make an enormous amount of money at the box office, it gained a number of fans when it hit streaming who otherwise might have dismissed the film as a medieval version of a Marvel movie.

10 Missing D&d Powers That Could Have Saved The Party In Honor Among Thieves
Image
The absence of certain D&d spells in Honor Among Thieves limited the party's abilities and potentially altered the outcome of their quests. The inclusion of spells like Mage Hand, Polymorph, and True Seeing could have provided strategic advantages and aided in overcoming challenges. Spells like Stoneskin, Geas, and Fly would have given the characters added protection, new narrative avenues, and more options for problem-solving.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves surprised its audience with its imaginative portrayal of the beloved tabletop game, but a number of missing spells could have changed things in the party's favor. Dungeons & Dragons is renowned for its inventive play style that enables players to build their character and play almost any way they choose. For magic-based characters, it gets even more fun as they level up. However, there are still limitations on the number and kind of spells that can be used to...

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ (2023): A Highly Entertaining Movie of Adventure, Fantasy and Lots of Comedy
Image
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a movie starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, as well as the great Hugh Grant with his peculiar (and marked) English accent… in the lands of Tolkien.

Very nice and with a lot more sense of humor than the previous ones. A film that blends comedy and the most inconsequential adventure genre very well.

The kind we all love.

And, above all, it knows how to distinguish itself in treatment and narrative approach from the rest of fantasy productions so hackneyed lately.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie review

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is easy to love, it knows how to win over the audience with a fantasy story that, told in the most entertaining way possible and full of jokes, knows how to make a niche among the ostentatious mega productions of this type.

It has style and the effects,...
