People with an Amazon Prime Video subscription can catch one film that is being "elevated" on the global streaming platform. Vertical's Elevation, the 2024 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film led by Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie, is currently sitting in the top 10 on Prime Video's streaming charts. While the film itself did not get great reviews, the sci-fi actioner is clearly making waves for people at home.
As of this article's publication, Elevation is currently sitting in the number three spot on Prime Video's Top 10 films chart globally, according to FlixPatrol. It is behind two other action films: Heads of State, starring Idris Elba and John Cena as politicians-turned-action heroes, and The Accountant 2, a thriller starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. The high rankings for Elevation is good news for a film that underperformed at the box office, grossing less than $4 million on a budget of about $18 million.

With the 2025 Sloan Film Summit just around the corner, we want to look back at some of our favorite films that have been supported in the past by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. These films are dramas, science fictions, biopics and big budget blockbusters. Yes, they all have science, math, technology, economics or engineering at their core, and this list goes to show just how much storytelling juice you can get out of those topics.
The films on this list show how universal stories about the sciences can be. We all care about nature, we all look up at the stars and wonder and we all love solving a good puzzle. And that’s what the sciences are all about. Both art and science help you understand the world better, just in different ways, and these films prove what you can do when they come together.

In 1983, a film dared to capture the raw courage of American men who defied gravity. A very ambitious project with a talented cast based on true historical events, this film was expected to do wonders after its release. And so it did, but only critically? Commercially, it became one of the 1980s' biggest box office flops, but unexpectedly, it was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four Oscars. Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff, which was based on a best-selling book published in 1979 by journalist and writer Tom Wolfe, chronicles the journey of the Mercury Seven astronauts and the test pilots who preceded them.
The Right Stuff was celebrated by the Academy for its undeniable artistry, but at the same time, the film grossed only $21 million domestically against a $27 million budget. How did this happen? The film is known for having unconventional pacing, but the answer doesn't lie in...

If you’re working on the production staff for MGM+‘s upcoming Robin Hood series, don’t let Sean Bean near any spoons! He’s likely to carve your heart out. Why a spoon, cousin? Because it’s dull, you twit! It’ll hurt more! Heh, Alan Rickman quotes aside, the unkillable Sean Bean is ready to line his pockets with coin as the vile Sheriff of Nottingham for a new Robin Hood series starring Jack Patten (War Machine) as Sir Robin of Locksley.
MGM+’s Robin Hood series hails from Lionsgate TV and showrunner John Glenn. The show describes Robin Hood as “a sweeping, romantic adventure, a modern take of the classic tale that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian.”
The synopsis continues by saying Robin Hood‘s events follow the “Norman invasion of England, Rob (Patten) – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian,...

Sean Bean has joined the upcoming “Robin Hood” series at MGM+, Variety has learned.
Bean will star alongside previously announced series lead Jack Patten, who will play the titular outlaw folk hero. Bean will star as the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham.
The official description of the Sheriff states:
“This vision of the Sheriff of Nottingham is unique: a statesman, a strategist, and a builder of Nottingham itself. A loving father, a politician, and cousin to King Henry II. He navigates the dangerous tides of power, facing not only an outlaw in the woods but also the ambitions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Norman Barons that surround him. Cunning and pragmatic, he is a man who rules with an iron hand, not out of cruelty, but an unshakable belief that the law, as Normans see it, must be preserved.”

Sean Bean has been tapped to star opposite Jack Patten in MGM+’s upcoming series Robin Hood.
From Lionsgate TV and showrunner John Glenn, Robin Hood is described as a sweeping, romantic adventure, a modern take of the classic tale that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian.
In the series, following the Norman invasion of England, Rob (Patten) – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord – fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land.

Ahead of Elevation’s UK release, we talk to George Nolfi about monsters, the state of original screenwriting, and his plans for Star Wars.
Since his career began over two decades ago, writer-director George Nolfi has brought a level of thoughtfulness to his genre movies. In The Adjustment Bureau, his 2011 directorial debut, he adapted a Philip K Dick short story as a philosophical sci-fi romance starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt – something that might have wrong-footed audiences expecting an action thriller in the vein of earlier adaptations of Dick’s other work, most obviously the ultra-violent blockbuster, Total Recall.
Prior to that, Nolfi’s spec script, Honor Among Thieves, was bought up and re-christened as Ocean’s Twelve (2004) – director Steven Soderbergh’s smart, sparky all-star heist comedy. Nolfi also lent his writing talent to The Bourne Supremacy (albeit uncredited) and The Bourne Ultimatum (credited).

A single father and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy.
The synopsis of Elevation doesn’t really give much away and probably with good reason as that is simply the crux of the story. Set several years after some rather odd-looking giant insect creatures invade the earth and wipe out 95% of the population, a handful of humans remain scattered across the planet (we presume although I think only the US is mentioned) and they can only survive if they live at 8000 feet. Minor spoiler, they don’t really explain the whole 8000 feet thing and why the monsters can’t climb any higher than that so if you’re someone who needs logic to...

Exclusive: Jack Patten is quickly making a name for himself in Hollywood. The Australian actor, a 2023 graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, has landed his first TV role, and it’s the lead of an on-air series, MGM+’s Robin Hood.
The casting follows Patten’s similarly impressive first Hollywood booking on the upcoming Patrick Hughes film for Netflix, War Machine, which landed the actor US representation by Gersh. Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures, which produces both War Machine and Robin Hood, cast Patten in the movie and then suggested him for Robin Hood.
From Lionsgate TV and showrunner John Glenn, Robin Hood is described as a sweeping, romantic adventure, a modern take of the classic tale that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian.

Producer Paul Maslansky, who came up with the premise for the first Police Academy movie and got help from three world-class directors to push the troubled cult classic Return to Oz past the finish line, has died. He was 91.
Maslansky died Monday of natural causes at a hospital in Los Robles, California, his partner of 16 years, Sally Emr, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The New Yorker made his producing debut in Italy on The Castle of the Living Dead (1964), starring Christopher Lee, and he filmed George Cukor’s penultimate feature, the Elizabeth Taylor-starring The Blue Bird (1976), and Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer, in the Soviet Union.

The most intriguing part of non-fiction movies set in the past, whether they're war films, action flicks, or sweeping historical dramas, is how accurately they portray certain events. While the most wonderful aspect of going to the movies is the pure escapism you get from being transported to another era, it is also interesting when a film depicts something truly unbelievable that happened for real.
There are many moments in movies that are so fantastical, they must have been dreamed up to spice up the narrative, and are too shocking to be real. For example, toward the end of Titanic, where the elderly couple embrace when the ship is sinking. It's a poignant moment in the film that happened. Another example is 127 Hours, particularly the scene where James Franco's real-life character Aron Ralston cuts off his arm to survive after being trapped between two rocks. This, like many...

After waiting nearly 30 years for a sequel, Twisters characters offer a fresh group of movie stars to the world of storm chasing. The original Twister follows a pair of married storm chasers who put themselves at the mercy of dust storms and tornadoes to implement a new weather alert system. The film was a box office triumph, grossing around $500 million, with much of this success attributed to Twisters memorable cast of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Cary Elwes. Twisters seeks to match that effect with a cast of modern stars like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.
Twisters has been in development for a long time, with numerous writers and directors considered before landing on Minari director Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. Anthony Mackie has been involved in some of the most interesting movies of the past decades, with projects like The Hurt Locker and 8 Mile still talked about with huge reverence today. However, the actor has also starred in plenty of sci-fi films that push the boundaries of filmmaking with creative ideas, wild concepts, and unconventional storytelling. Hes consistently been involved in the most singular and unique stories in the genre, ranging from independent pictures to big-budget Hollywood blockbusters - and many of these rank among Anthony Mackies best movies ever.

We jump into Elevation three years after an apocalyptic event. Massive insect-like creatures erupt from the ground and wipe out about 95% of humanity. They are efficient in their kills, never resting, never ceasing, but like most creatures in this subgenre, they have a limit. These creatures cannot surpass a certain elevation level, forcing the remainder of humanity to create settlements at high altitudes. Much like the not-too-dissimilar A Quiet Place, Elevation revolves around a small unit of people at the edge of survival and the small hope of finding a solution to defeat these new apex predators.

Every year, we get dozens of uninspired action thrillers. Take a former big name, throw them a gun, and watch them run wild. It’s a simple formula that doesn’t lead to much great stuff. Elevation doesn’t exactly break away from that pack, but with decent leading performances from Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin, alongside some nicely crafted action, George Nolfi’s thriller is a serviceable time at the theater.

In the world of Elevation, monsters have taken over the planet. However, they have a weakness: elevation. Above 8000 feet, the creatures can’t seem to attack anybody, forcing humanity to move up into the mountains to survive. This isn’t good enough for some of the people living there. They want to take back their lives.

An expert review of the 1983 historical drama The Right Stuff praises the space epic's realism. Directed by Philip Kaufman and adapted from Tom Wolfes 1979 book, the film chronicles the lives of Navy, Marine, and Air Force test pilots involved in pioneering aeronautical research, as well as the Mercury Seventhe first astronauts chosen for the first human spaceflight by the U.S. The film stars Dennis Quaid, Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Fred Ward, and Barbara Hershey, and went on to win four of its eight nominations at the 56th Academy Awards.
In an expert video with Insider, retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott awarded the film a perfect 10 for its portrayal of space travel preparation. Stott particularly praised scenes showing John Glenns (Ed Harris) experiences with intense gravitational forces and reentry, noting how accurately the film captured these challenges. The Running Man looks to be one of 2025's biggest movies due to the star power of its cast. The original The Running Man novel was published in 1982, and it's still commonly regarded as one of prolific horror author Stephen King's best books. In this case, the book is one of his infrequent ventures into other genres, as it's a dystopian thriller. Less than a decade after the novel's release, The Running Man was adapted into a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was fairly successful. The 2025 version already seems more promising.
Before diving into the cast, it should be mentioned that The Running Man is being directed by filmmaker Edgar Wright, so there's prestige behind the scenes. Wright joins the company of directors like Stanley Kubrick and Brian De Palma, who have directed adaptations of Stephen King's work. The creature feature Elevation, which stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), went into production in the second half of 2022 with director George Nolfi, who previously worked with Mackie on the films The Banker and The Adjustment Bureau, at the helm. Earlier this year, it secured a theatrical distributor in the U.S., and now we know that the distributor, Vertical, is planning to bring the film to the big screen on November 8th. With that date just over a month away, a trailer for Elevation has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Scripted by John Glenn (Eagle Eye) and Seal Team duo Jacob Roman and Kenny Ryan, Elevation is set in a post-apocalyptic Rocky Mountains, where a single father and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy.
