Chief of War is a series that intrigued me from the outset despite, or perhaps because, it was very clearly not made with someone like me in mind. A dramatized, unflinching retelling of the unification and colonization of Hawaii, the series is led by a predominantly indigenous Hawaiian and Polynesian cast and crew, centering that culture’s perspective in everything from narrative structure to spoken language.

As an outsider to Hawaiian culture but someone who is always willing and enthusiastic to learn about other cultures and non-Eurocentric history, this premise grabbed me from the moment I first heard about it. And having watched the entire series, I can confidently report that the end result is gripping and thoroughly engaging, though not without its issues here and there.

Don't be alarmed if you hear the thundering sound of drums. It just means that the new epic series, Chief of War, is arriving on your screen. This Friday, Apple TV+ debuts the new show led by Jason Momoa (Fast X). History is often told by the “victors” — even if their path was wrong.

For example, it’s a conveniently heroic narrative to tell the story of a country founded by free people who rebelled against an oppressive monarchic regime. It’s less convenient to tell it from the perspective of everyone they stepped on to gain freedom (and sometimes borderline impossible thanks to systemic erasure). U.S. history is filled with the lost stories of Indigenous people, but Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett’s “Chief of War” wants to change that.

The first Chief of War trailer has arrived. Jason Momoa, best known for playing Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, headlines the upcoming historical epic series on Apple TV+.

Told from an indigenous perspective, Chief of War follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai‘i at the turn of the 18th century. The series is a passion project for creators Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who both share native Hawaiian heritage. The teaser trailer prominently features Momoa's Kaʻiana, a real-life Native Hawaiian who was called the Prince of Kaua'i as well as the most famous Hawaiian in the world. Despite being set in 18th-century Hawaii, the stunning scenery shown in the trailer is New Zealand, which served as a stand-in location. However, the Chief of War production did travel to the lava fields of Kalapana, Hawaii for some major battle scenes. Check out the teaser trailer below.

Apple released the official teaser for Chief of War, which depicts Momoa as Ka’iana, a warrior whose goal is to unite the islands against Western colonization during the 18th century. The first two episodes will premiere on Aug. 1, 2025, while the rest of the nine-episode season will release weekly until Sept. 19. Previously described as a miniseries, it appears Apple is now leaving things open for future installments. After See became a beloved series for the streaming platform, Momoa may have found his next hit on Apple for years to come.

Jason Momoa has blossomed into one of the most reliable TV and movie stars in Hollywood. Two decades after his breakout turn in Baywatch: Hawaii, followed by Stargate: Atlantis, Momoa is now a huge star, mostly for playing Aquaman in the Dceu, Dune, and the villain in Fast X.

House of the Dragon begins production on Season 3

Production has officially commenced on the eight-episode third season of HBO's House of the Dragon. Based on George R.R. Per Variety, the two-episode premiere is set to land on Apple TV+ on Aug. 1, with new episodes dropping weekly. Based on true events, Chief of War serves as a passion project for Momoa, who told the Associated Press in 2022 that the series was going to be his career "pinnacle" and that it was his "Dances With Wolves". Chief of War follows "warrior Ka’iana (Momoa) as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century." Momoa co-created the series alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who served as a writer on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
