Am I Ok? (2024) Review — A Mediocre Dakota Johnson Sexual Awakening
Image
There is a reason Am I Ok? had to wait two long years since its Sundance premiere in 2022. It’s a relatively vain turn-of-the-century character study that summarizes an intimate issue, resolving everything within 90 minutes or less. That’s a shame because the film could have used an extra 30 minutes to explore three endearing performances that are so much better than the material.

The problem is not the script. It’s the fact that Tig Notaro, a signature comedian of her generation, fails to generate the type of comedy that makes her so popular in Am I Ok?. The final result has heart, and the chemistry between the two characters is off the charts. Yet, that’s used as a plot device to move the story along instead of creating something more meaningful.

‘Am I Ok?’ Max Review: Dakota Johnson Starrer Feels Like A Warm Hug
Image
Dakota Johnson’s 2022 film Am I Ok? is finally hitting our small screens on the 6th of June, so first, I’d like to say happy pride! This is a film about a late bloomer, 32-year-old Lucy, who’s recently come to terms with something about herself that her best friend of ages Jane doesn’t know, and chaos ensues. I want to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible because anything else I mention will take away from the inherent warmth that comes from watching this film. I suppose the authenticity of this film comes from everyone involved. Directed by wives and besties Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne and written by Lauren Pomerantz, who happens to be the muse for this story as well, the film is short and sweet and delivers blow after blow in the most subtle way through effective dialogue and simple anecdotes.

‘Am I Ok?’ Trailer: Dakota Johnson Discovers She’s a Lesbian in Friendship Dramedy
Image
Dakota Johnson is asking herself what we all have at one time or another: “Am I Ok?”

Johnson stars in the simply titled feature that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Tig Notaro co-directs with her wife and fellow comedian Stephanie Allynne from a semi-autobiographical script written by Lauren Pomerantz.

Johnson stars as 30something Lucy who realizes she is a lesbian just as her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) announces she’s moving from Los Angeles to London for work. As Lucy’s life is upended, she’s suddenly floating through a queer dating pool without the life raft of Jane.

Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, and Sean Hayes also star, along with co-director Notaro.

Screenwriter Pomerantz told Entertainment Weekly that “Am I Ok?” began as a “friendship movie” centered on her actual best friend Jessica Elbaum, who serves as a producer on the film. However, the feature became a coming-out dramedy instead.

Strange Planet Series Trailer Dives into the Hilarious Chaos of Daily Life on Apple TV+
Image
The world of entertainment is no stranger to diving into the eccentricities of everyday life. But few have taken on this challenge with as much whimsical charm and delightful absurdity as the upcoming Apple TV+ series, Strange Planet. This animated show promises a fresh and hilarious perspective on the life we think we know, based on Nathan Pyle's beloved New York Times bestselling graphic novel.

For those uninitiated into Pyle's world, his work took the internet by storm when first unveiled on Instagram, later consolidating its fanbase with hardcover story collections. Now, this universe populated by blue beings is brought to vibrant life on the screen. Drawing parallels to human life, these creatures navigate scenes eerily familiar to us — from the daily caffeine fix ritual at coffee shops to the not-so-frequent yet harrowing near-death airplane experiences, and yes, even to those moments at the bar when one might just ingest something questionably toxic.

‘The Bubble’ Trailer: Judd Apatow’s Covid-19 Comedy Drops a Star-Studded Cast into Lockdown
Image
“This movie’s going to make the world forget about all their problems.”

The only question: Which movie?

Judd Apatow co-writes, directs, and produces upcoming Netflix comedy “The Bubble,” about the makings of a fictional movie in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. While “The Bubble” will be available to stream April 1, the faux film at the center of its plot, “Cliff Beasts 6: Battle for Everest: Memories of a Requiem,” alas will never hit theaters…especially if its director, played by Fred Armisen, can’t deliver a satisfying cut to the studio executive (Kate McKinnon).

“The Bubble” centers on the behind-the-scenes drama of making the sixth installment in the “Cliff Beasts” universe, the “23rd largest dino franchise ever.”

A group of actors, including fictionalized versions of Leslie Mann, Iris Apatow, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key, Pedro Pascal, and Karen Gillan are stuck inside a “pandemic bubble” at a hotel while...

Sundance Review: Am I Ok? is a Late-Blooming Coming-Out Comedy
Dakota Johnson
A romantic comedy that functions best as a fable of friendship and self-reflection, Am I Ok? is the kind of lightweight, amiable movie that just barely earns the emotional beats at the heart of its story. Set in Los Angeles, it follows the converging life events of two best friends, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), soul sisters with opposite personalities who tell each other everything—except for the big secrets they’ve been harboring from each other. How they respond to hearing them fuels Stephanie Allyne and Tig Notaro’s gentle and wobbly feature debut.

As a 32-year-old spa receptionist, Lucy has never been in a relationship and never fallen in love. The closest thing she has to intimacy is the handshake she gives her male friend after hanging out. As she bemoans her romantic stagnancy over drinks with Jane and her boyfriend (Jermaine Fowler), her bestie delivers...

Sundance Review: Tig Notaro And Stephanie Allynne Debut Film ‘Am I Ok?’
Image
In 2009, when I was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany, I traveled to Berlin on New Year’s Eve to celebrate. As my friends and I were getting turnt up in the bar, I came out as a lesbian. The moment was random and unprovoked. I shared the news with all my friends and had a dope night ringing in the 2010s, but panic set in when I woke up the next day. I’m 27 years old and a lesbian: What do I do now?

Coming out in your adult years is confusing and stressful, and this is the basis of Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s feature film debut, Am I okay? written by Lauren Pomerantz. As a Sundance Film Festival premiere, the film stars Dakota Johnson (Suspiria), Sonoya Mizuno (Crazy Rich Asians), Molly Gordon (Shiva Baby) and Kiersey Clemons (Antebellum). The film follows a woman who...

‘Am I Ok?’ Review: A Late Bloomer in La La Land
Image
Technically, Los Angeles receptionist Lucy (Dakota Johnson), the passive singleton of Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro’s frustratingly childish rom-com “Am I Ok?,” is 32 years old. Emotionally, she’s as awkward as a freshman with her first pimple. Lucy has never been in love, never had a real relationship, and never ends her dates with anything more than a handshake. “I feel so stupid, I should have figured this out by now,” Lucy blurts to her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) after too much tequila makes her weepy about her sexual paralysis. “There must be a reason why I’ve barely done it?”

There is. She needs to stop shaking hands with men and start smooching women like Brit, the flirtatious masseuse (Kinsey Clemons) at her salon. That this revelation has only just hit Lucy adds to her angst — how embarrassing to come out now, she frets — and online quizzes...

‘Am I Ok?’ Review: Dakota Johnson & Sonoya Mizuno Find True Love In A Heartwarming Coming Out Tale [Sundance]

“There is no timeline to figuring this out,” Jane tells her best friend Lucy in Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s directorial debut feature film “Am I Ok?” This is a film for late bloomers of any kind but will resonate particularly with anyone who came into their sexual identity later in life. Screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz took inspiration from her own late in life, coming out and close relationship with her best friend, producer Jessica Elbaum.

‘Am I Ok?’ Filmmakers Tig Notaro & Stephanie Allynne Set ‘Time And Space’ As Next Feature; Judd Apatow Producing
Image
Exclusive: Days before the world premiere of Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s feature directorial debut Am I Ok? at Sundance, Deadline has learned about the duo’s next feature project is Time and Space, which Judd Apatow will produce through his Apatow Productions.

Allynne will direct off a screenplay she wrote based on a story she conceived with her spouse Notaro. Emmy nominee and stand-up comic Notaro also will star in the project, which follows the life of a lesbian couple who are thrown into turmoil when they ditch their Los Angeles city life for upstate New York. Notaro and Allynne will produce through their production company, Something Fierce.

Time and Space reflects Notaro and Allynne’s interest in sophisticated, entertaining storytelling with universal appeal where there just happens to be gay characters and themes.

The duo conceived Time and Space during the pandemic, though the movie is not set during one.

Sundance Player ‘Am I Ok’ Puts Spotlight on Real-Life Friendship of Producer and Writer
Image
Many life-defining friendships likely have a moment when the two parties look at one another and say, “This should be a movie.” It so happens that writer Lauren Pomerantz and producer Jessica Elbaum, best friends since 2004, had the skill set to make that happen.

The sisterly bond shared by the women is the basis for “Am I Ok?,” one of the most anticipated titles premiering at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. The indie stars Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno, surrogates for Pomerantz and Elbaum respectively, and is directed by work and life partners Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro. The film is the kind of bittersweet indie the festival is known for highlighting, with a message about the need to live in truth.

Pomerantz had settled into her comedy-writing career by the end of her 20s, contributing to “Saturday Night Live” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” At 30, however, something...

For their 2022 edition, the Sundance Film Festival has once again adapted to the ever-shifting pandemic landscape. Having recently scrapping their in-person plans, they’ve shifted to a virtual-only lineup that will begin this Thursday and last through January 30, offering the first glimpse at the year in cinema.

We’ll have extensive coverage from the festival (which one can follow here or on Twitter). Before reviews arrive, we’re highlighting the premieres that should be on your radar. If you’re interested in experiencing Sundance from home, one can see available tickets here.

2nd Chance (Ramin Bahrani)

As his early films exuded a documentary-like approach to riveting character studies, it’s not surprising that Ramin Bahrani’s first fully fledged non-fiction feature is a wildly entertaining look at a complicated figure. 2nd Chance explores the life and career ambitions of Richard Davis, a pizzeria owner who built a bulletproof-vest empire. 2022 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Tig Notaro & Stephanie Allynne’s Am I Ok?
Image
Perhaps a great option for the festival in terms of laugher fare, Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne team together for what is not their first creative collab, but their directorial debut. Former SNL and current The Ellen DeGeneres Show writer Lauren Pomerantz penned Am I Ok? — which is being coined as a heartwarming comedy. Production began in February of 2021 back in Los Angeles with Dakota Johnson leading a cast comprised of Jermaine Fowler, Whitmer Thomas, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Sean Hayes and Notaro herself. Notaro was of course a big deal in Park City back in 2015 when she was the subject of the docu tribute Tig.…...

Dakota Johnson Joins Cast of Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s ‘Am I Ok?’ From Picturestart (Exclusive)
Image
Dakota Johnson is among a slew of actors joining a new feature film from co-directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, which marks the first solo financing effort from Erik Feig’s company Picturestart.

The project, titled “Am I Ok?,” will see Johnson co-star alongside Sonoya Mizuno, “Coming 2 America” star Jermaine Fowler, Whitmer Thomas, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Notaro and Sean Hayes.

The film follows lifelong best friends Lucy and Jane, who are convinced they know everything there is to know about each other. When Jane announces she’s moving from L.A. to London for a job, Lucy reveals a deeply buried, long-held secret. As Jane tries to help Lucy sort through old patterns and new feelings, their bond is thrown into chaos.

Lauren Pomerantz wrote the script, which is set to start shooting on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles. Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell will produce through their Gloria Sanchez Productions,...

Tig Notaro
Tig Notaro And Stephanie Allynne To Co-Direct Lauren Pomerantz Feature; Gloria Sanchez And Level Forward To Produce
Tig Notaro
Exclusive: One Mississippi duo Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne are set to make their feature directorial debut with a new untitled feature inspired by the real-life story of Lauren Pomerantz, head writer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Notaro and Allynne will co-direct a mostly autobiographical script written from Pomerantz. Gloria Sanchez and Level Forward will produce the pic which will explore the complicated and oftentimes wonderfully ridiculous dynamics of female friendship, self-discovery, and societal expectations

The yet-to-be-titled project follows thirtysomethings Lucy and Jane who have been best friends their entire lives. They’ve learned pretty much everything about life and each other from one another. Below the surface, however, are things unknown, or at least not quite accepted, which Lucy hides from Jane and — herself. Only when Lucy embarks on a personal journey, will she face a test of her friendship, and her sense of self, on a path she...

Ellen Digital Network Announces Two New Shows at NewFronts West
Ellen DeGeneres in American Idol (2002)
The Ellen DeGeneres empire continues to grow. The comedian and television host’s digital network announced two new projects Wednesday, during its panel at Iab NewFronts West 2019.

Ellen Digital Network’s “Not Great With Lauren” will star longtime “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” writer Lauren Pomerantz in a comedy series where Pomerantz will be constantly forced to throw herself out of her comfort zone. Pomerantz has been involved in “Ellen” for over 13 seasons and occasionally stars in the program’s comedy sketches.

Pomerantz’s upcoming series isn’t the first time one of DeGeneres’ team members has starred in their own spinoff. “Life’s First Ever With Jeannie” stars “Ellen” regular Jeannie Klisiewicz, who connects with DeGeneres fans and helps them enjoy various first-time experiences, such as buying a wedding dress. Similarly, “Ellen” DJ Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who joined the show in 2014, also starred in two spinoffs where he used his...

Ellen's at it again!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has given a script order to an untitled single-camera sitcom executive produced by Ellen DeGeneres and written and produced by Lauren Pomerantz, who worked on "Ellen."

The series will center on an independent 32-year-old woman who, upon being listed as "single" while signing papers for a house, enters crisis mode and wonders if she's made the right decision in being on her own.

In addition to her hosting duties on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," DeGeneres may have another project on her plate: Playing Ann Romeny's roommate on "Modern Family."

When Romney -- who is openly against gay marriage -- said "Modern Family" was her favorite show, DeGeneres took to twitter to joke about her statement.

"I'll play her roommate," the openly gay actress tweeted in response to "Modern Family" co-creator Steven Levitan's tweet that Romney could be the officiate...
