James Gunn Confirms: ‘Starfire!’ Not a Part of the Dcu
Image
Last month, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced three “younger-skewed” animated series: Starfire!, My Adventures with Green Lantern, and DC Superpowers, co-produced with Warner Bros. Animation.

For My Adventures with Green Lantern, it’s clear that the show won’t be part of the Dcu, as it takes place in the same universe as My Adventures with Superman. It follows Jessica Cruz, a teenager chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps, as she deals with the aftermath of an ancient war. The series is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, with My Adventures with Superman co-showrunner Jake Wyatt serving as executive producer.

The same applies to DC Superpowers. The show follows a group of new students at the Alliance School for Heroes, including Lightning, The Flash, Plastic Man, Aquagirl, Green Lantern, and Terra. Under the guidance of their principal, Martian Manhunter, they train to develop their powers and...

New Details And Logos For Green Lantern, Starfire, And DC Super Powers; Krypto Shorts Set In DC Also Coming
Image
Many fans have questioned how wise it was of DC Studios to hold a press event last week that boiled down to them confirming that several of the projects they announced in 2023 have failed to come to fruition.

There were a handful of meaningful updates, though those were largely overshadowed by the fact the Dcu still doesn't have a Batman.

Three new animated TV shows were announced and, while they're primarily aimed at younger DC fans, the opportunity is there for older fans to have fun with these (especially as one of them is set in the same world as My Adventures with Superman).

That is, of course, My Adventures with Green Lantern, a series coming our way from executive producer Jake Wyatt and co-executive producer Stephanie Gonzaga.

"My Adventures with Green Lantern will follow high school student Jessica Cruz, who has her life upended when," according to the official logline,...

James Gunn Announces 3 New DC Animated Shows for 'Younger-Skewing' Audiences
Image
A collection of new animated series has been greenlit for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. The projects, announced at an industry briefing on Feb. 21, aim to bolster the Dcu brand with programming for "younger-skewing" audiences.

Per Variety, the updated animated lineup kicks off with My Adventures with Green Lantern, centering on high schooler Jessica Cruz, after she inherits a power ring. Notably, the title carries the same naming convention as My Adventures with Superman, Max's successful Superman anime, unrelated to the Dcu. Jake Wyatt spearheads the project as executive producer with Stephanie Gonzaga serving as co-executive producer.

RelatedJames Gunn Shares Update on Next Dcu Project After Superman

Filmmaker James Gunn talks about dividing his involvement between Superman, Peacemaker, and future DC releases, even teasing a new story in the works.

The slate also features DC's own hero academia series, DC Super Powers, which will follow the Alliance School for Heroes,...

Alec Baldwin in The Boss Baby (2017)
Netflix and DreamWorks have partnered up for a massive slate of programming next year. In 2018, Netflix and DreamWorks Animated Television will debut six original shows. Some familiar titles and some brand new. Among the movies getting the small screen treatment are Trolls and The Boss Baby. In addition, TVweb is reporting that Netflix is rebooting the beloved 80s animated series, She-Ra, a spin-off of the old He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon.

First up is Trolls: The Beat Goes On, which arrives on January 18, 2018. Picking up where the film left off, Trolls: The Beat goes On is an all-new chapter in the endlessly upbeat adventures of the Trolls as Poppy, Branch and all of Troll Village keep the party going in their fantastical forest home. Executive produced by Matthew Beans (Robot Chicken), the series features Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Amanda Leighton (This Is Us) as the voices...

Comic-Con 2011: Robot Chicken Coverage and Panel
Of all the hilarity that the fine folks at Adult Swim have brought into the world, one of their most successful offerings has without a doubt been Robot Chicken. With little more than gumption and heinous amounts of old action figures, the show has been skewering pretty much everything in pop culture for the past six years.

To hear more about the show, we attended the Robot Chicken panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, featuring co-creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich and head writer Tom Root. Here's how it all went down:

The panel included writer, Matthew Beans, voice talent and writer Breckin Meyer, writer Zeb Wells, co-head writer Doug Goldstein, co-head writer Tom Root, co-creator Matthew Senreich, co-creator Seth Green. The new Robot Chicken DVD will feature nine unaired episodes, including the 100th episode, and almost two hours of behind-the-scenes extras. The panel started with a clip of what's to...

Robot Chicken duo making live-action YouTube series
Seth Green and Matthew Senreich have teamed up on a new live-action/stop-motion series on YouTube. The duo won an Emmy last year for Cartoon Network's Robot Chicken. Deadline reports that Stoopid Monkey will be released each Friday for 10 weeks beginning July 15. The show follows "the misadventures of Stoopid Monkey, Biggie and Qt as they interact with real people."

Green and Senreich's Stoopid Monkey Productions are partnering on the project with Joe Kavanagh, who launched the Harry Potter, Batman and Justice League action figure brands for Mattel. The comedy series will be directed by John Harvatine IV, Eric Towner and David Brooks for Buddy System Studios, where the animation work is being done. The script was penned  by Matthew Beans, and he is producing the sketch shorts with Steve Tzirlin, Nakia Trower-Shuman and Terence Liff.

Two new episodes of Stoopid Monkey will be released each Friday for 10 weeks beginning July 15. The show follows the misadventures of Stoopid Monkey, Biggie and Qt as they interact with real people. Green and Senreich's Stoopid Monkey Productions are teaming on the project with Joe Kavanagh, who launched the Harry Potter, Batman and Justice League action figure brands for Mattel. John Harvatine IV, Eric Towner and David Brooks are directing for Buddy System Studios, where the animation work is being done. Matthew Beans wrote and is producing the sketch shorts with Steve Tzirlin, Nakia Trower-Shuman and Terence Liff. "We are beyond excited to be part of YouTube's creator-friendly program and thrilled to team with Joe and our friends at Buddy System Studios," said Green and Senreich,...

Winners of the The 38th Annual Annie Awards Announced
Here's the full list of winners from the 38th annual Annie Awards. DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon sept the awards with 10 trophies including the award for Best Animated Feature, which is what I hoped would happen. That was my favorite animated movie of the year.

Pixar / Disney Boycotted the awards because they feel that the International Animated Film Society voters favor DreamWorks even though Up won the Best Animated Feature award last year. As much as I love Pixar animation, just because they don't win an award doesn't mean it's the end of the world, and I don't see why they feel they need to boycott. Just because they are Pixar doesn't mean every movie they make has to win.

According to THR "two years ago, questions about the voting were raised when Dwa's Kung Fu Panda swept the Annies feature categories, winning ten trophies and shutting out Pixar's Wall-e,...

Votd: Brad Bird’s Annie Award Acceptance Speech and Winner’s List
The Vince Lombardi Trophy wasn't the only piece of hardware handed out this weekend. The 38th annual Annie Awards took place as well with the DreamWorks film How to Train Your Dragon sweeping many of the regular awards (which was to be expected with Disney/Pixar boycotting the awards [1] because of judging procedures they feel favor DreamWorks.) The highlight of the night, however, was when director Brad Bird was awarded one of three Windsor McCay Awards for career achievement (The others went to Eric Goldberg and Matt Groening). Bird couldn't be there to accept in person so he video taped an acceptance speech from the Vancouver set of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Most of the video package highlighted Bird's incredibly varied history in animation (including The Simpsons, The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and more) but then things take a turn for the worse. Check it out after the jump...

"How to Train Your Dragon" Soars Atop Annie Awards!
The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.

Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.

The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.

"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature.
