truTV Announces Series Pickups and Renewals
truTV has announced its renewed, new, and developing series. Returning to truTV are The Carbonaro Effect, with magician Michael Carbonaro; and how-to series, Hack My Life, hosted by Kevin Pereira and Brooke Van Poppelen.

The new primetime series are: Almost Genius, hosted by April Richardson and Chris Fairbanks; 10 Things, hosted by Girl Code’s Jamie Lee; and the new documentary series, truOriginals: Inside Iconic Comedy, executive produced by Banks Tarver, Ken Druckerman, and Anneka Jones.

John Oliver spearheads SXSW Comedy lineup
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
The Daily Show’s John Oliver will highlight the comedy lineup at this year’s South by Southwest Film and Interactive festivals, beginning March 12 in Austin, Texas. Comedy Central will present a special edition of “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show,” while Michael Ian Black, Thomas Lennon, Anthony Jeselnik, Peter Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani, Al Madrigal, and Dave Foley are also set to perform during the festival. In addition, Scott Aukerman’s “Comedy Death-Ray Radio” will be one of four comedy podcasts that will be recorded live during the week-long event.

'Last Comic Standing': Good comics, bad format
Something really weird happened on Last Comic Standing last night. It was…funny. Like, actually, honest-to-goodness funny in some parts. (It helps if you fast-forward through the schlocky “bits” in between the stand-up sets, and don’t listen to too much of the “banter.” Oy.) The biggest relief was how few terrible acts there were; whatever schadenfreude there may be in watching lousy singers bomb their American Idol auditions, it’s just not the same for stand-up.

Too bad the structure of the show doesn’t seem to notice that stand-up is its own unique medium, though. The comics so far seemed solid,...
