Marianne Tardieu

Watch: International Trailer For 'Insecure' Starring Adele Exarchapoulos And Reda Kateb
With so many sidebars at the Cannes Film Festival, I have to admit, I didn't even know the Association for Independent Cinema category existed. But alas it does, and last year, "Insecure" starring Reda Kateb and Adele Exarchopoulos screened, and as you can probably tell, there wasn't much fanfare around the picture. But it has already opened in cinemas abroad, and continues to rollout, and though this international trailer has been online for a couple of months, it's fresh to our eyes. Directed by Marianne Tardieu, the film follows a nursing student, who earns money as a security guard, who crosses paths with a young animation student. Here's the official synopsis: Chérif (Reda Kateb, Zero Dark Thirty), in his thirties and having moved back in with his parents, is trying to pass the nursing exam. In the meantime, he works a job as a security guard to get by. He meets a woman he likes,...

Movies This Week: May 1-7, 2015

Multiplexes will be filled with superheroes this weekend as the new Avengers film touches down on almost 4,300 screens nationwide. A movie that big doesn't leave much room for anything else (even the Alamo Drafthouse isn't adding new titles this weekend at area locations aside from the Marvel sequel), although a few specialty releases are poised to breakthrough and we've got some recommended events for those of you who are not up for a comic-book blockbuster.

Austin Film Society is teaming up with the Premiers Plans Festival of Angers, France this weekend for a New French Cinema series of Texas premiere screenings at the Marchesa along with special guest filmmakers and programmers from the fest. This program is part of the Sister Cities initiative between Austin and Angers and begins tonight with Spartacus & Cassandra, an acclaimed documentary from director Ioanis Nuguet, who will be in attendance for a Q&A. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.

The festival runs from January 27-February 7.

Israel (2013)
'McFarland, USA' will close out 30th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival
Israel (2013)
A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Cannes 2014: 'Insecure' review
★★☆☆☆Adèle Exarchopoulos' return to Cannes following Blue Is the Warmest Colour's Palme d'Or win might be the headline from Marianne Tardieu's French thriller Insecure (2014), but the film itself sadly doesn't reach the promise of what its star might attract. Exarchopoulos is, in fact, only in a handful of scenes, as we follow the life of Chérif (Reda Kateb), struggling to make good on his ambitions in working-class Brittany. He's a security guard at a mall in the city of Rennes, hampered by his cranky boss and kids from his estate who remorselessly bully him. It's a part-time gig until he passes his nursing exam, but trying to make ends meet whilst attempting the impossible begins to take its toll.

Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)
Exclusive: 'Blue is the Warmest Color' Breakout Adele Exarchopoulos in 'Insecure' Trailer
Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)
Adele Exarchopoulos seems destined to be unlucky in love. After her breakout role in last year's Cannes' winner "Blue is the Warmest Color," the French actress has taken on "Qui Vive" (the English-language title is "Insecure"), another romantic story in which her character faces strong issues with her partner. Indiewire has an exclusive first look at the English-subtitled trailer for the French-language drama. "Zero Dark Thirty" and "A Prophet" star Reda Kateb plays a nursing student trying to better himself in inner-city Paris and making ends meet with a gig as a security guard, a job which brings him into contact with animation student Jenny (Exarchapoulos) but also with harassing teenagers and a more sinister criminal gang. "Insecure" is helmed by first time feature writer/director Marianne Tardieu. No U.S. release date has been announced as of yet. Watch the trailer below:...
