Books and TV shows have had a special relationship for over a century now. There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

Television shows recast characters all the time for a number of reasons, and sometimes even more than once. Be that as it may, fans were still a little surprised when heartthrob actor and country singer Luke Grimes left the campy vampire series "True Blood" after season 6.
Created by Alan Ball, "True Blood" was a sexy, wild show that starred an incredible ensemble cast playing a variety of humans, vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, and other supernatural beings. It could be a bit uneven but it was also a lot of fun, and in season 6, Grimes was introduced as vampire James Kent, who was held captive with vampire Jessica ("Daredevil" star Deborah Ann Woll) in a horrible anti-vampire camp. Kent almost immediately endeared himself to fans by protecting Jessica from an unsettling experiment by refusing to participate and getting burned over and over as a result. He and Jessica ended up having a...

HBO's fantasy horror drama True Blood, based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries book series by Charlaine Harris, had a cast of bloodthirsty characters that left a mark on audiences and American pop culture. While some aspects of the show have aged better than others, True Blood is still regarded as a groundbreaking show for its ability to use fantasy to tackle complex issues important to viewers' real lives. Using vampires as an allegory for the LGBTQ experience was an effective way to discuss the issues surrounding same-sex marriage and equality; however, despite being lauded for LGBTQ representation, not all of True Blood's cast was on board with the series' portrayal of same-sex relationships.
The pacifist vampire James Kent was introduced in season six and initially played by Luke Grimes. Grimes's performance successfully ingratiated the new character with the audience. True Blood fans were shocked when HBO announced that Grimes had been replaced,...

True Blood's success was due to its overqualified cast, including theater kids, Tony and Oscar winners, and international stars. Despite rumors of a reboot in 2021, HBO officially scrapped the idea in 2022 due to concerns about the script and direction. While the True Blood reboot is currently off the table, the show still has a devoted fanbase and may be considered for revival in the future.
True Blood was a huge hit for HBO, and is constantly the subject of revival talk among its many fans. According to star Joe Manganiello, one reason for the shows success was the quality of the cast, which he believes was vastly overqualified for the series.

Exclusive: National Geographic is wading into one of psychology’s most debated studies from the past 50 years. The network has given a green light to The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth (wt), a three-part docuseries from Juliette Eisner, Alex Braverman and Muck Media, the producers behind Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.
Led by Stanford psychology professor Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, the six-day Stanford Prison Experiment was Zimbardo’s attempt to understand the power of situation over human behavior. In 1971, Zimbardo paid two dozen college-aged participants to live in a mock prison, observing how randomly assigned “prisoner” and “guard” roles influenced behavior. What started out as a self-contained university experiment turned into a media spectacle that captured the imagination and attention of the world, defining our understanding of human nature and forever changing the course of psychology.

The news that True Blood’s reboot has been canceled is actually good for the original HBO show. It can be tempting to assume that every franchise reboot is a good thing. Although a lot of revivals fail to recapture the tone, spirit, and unique style of their predecessors, the idea of bringing back a beloved cult television show - especially one with a divisive finale - often leads to assumptions that a reboot will miraculously retcon everything that was wrong with the original series.
Since True Blood got a lot wrong in its final seasons, the news that there was a reboot on the way caused much excitement back in late 2020. Coming from showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, this new take on True Blood was set to bring the world of Sookie Stackhouse back to TV screens. However, as Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost-cutting measures continue to cancel swathes of major projects,...

As you may recall, it was announced back in 2020 that HBO was developing a series reboot of their hit vampire series “True Blood,” with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa leading the charge. Based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball, HBO’s vampire/werewolf/were-panther/you-name-it series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.
But what’s the latest on HBO’s “True Blood” reboot? Well, according to a new article from Variety this week, those plans from back in 2020 are dead-in-the-water here in 2023.
HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys tells Variety that while a few scripts had been written for a potential “True Blood” reboot, nothing ended up coming together. It seems the project was only ever in the early stages, and HBO wasn’t confident enough to proceed. That doesn’t mean “True Blood” will Never be back, but...

True Blood is not returning on HBO.
Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.
Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.
Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.
It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.
Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

Although there's been talk around town about a potential reboot of HBO's True Blood, there's been a lot of skepticism since the network never addressed the rumors.
In a new interview with TV Line, HBO boss Casey Bloys has confirmed the project is very much in the works, but it is still in the very early stages of development.
“There’s no green light imminent on that,” he told the outlet.
“I wouldn’t say it’s as far along as, say, the Game of Thrones [spinoff House of Dragon]. We definitely have a writer working on an idea for sure, but I think that it’s fair to say it’s not quite as far along as people think. It’s [not] coming on the air next year. It’s a long way away from that.”

It looks like fans will be returning to Bon Temps in the near future, but don't expect Anna Paquin to be a part of the rumored reboot.
The actress, who starred as Sookie Stackhouse on all seven seasons, broke her silence about the project on Twitter, and it's quite surprising.
"Well, this is the first I'm hearing about this," she wrote via Twitter after a flurry of users asked her about her thoughts on the project.
The actress later clarified that she's not mad about HBO's reported reboot.
"Not mad, just answering the question that has inundated my feed," the beloved actress responded.
Paquin is not the only person associated with True Blood to claim they have no clue about the project.
Novel writer Charlaine Harris, who brought the world to life, wrote the following on social media:

HBO is developing a reboot of its hit vampire drama True Blood, Deadline has confirmed. The premium cabler has been working on a new version of the series for nearly a year.
Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and NOS4A2 creator Jami O’Brien will co-write the pilot, and O’Brien also will executive produce. Original series creator Alan Ball also is attached as an executive producer.
The original True Blood is based on Charlaine Harris’ series of novels, The Southern Vampire Mysteries. The series aired for seven seasons on HBO from 2008-2014, winning a Golden Globe and Emmy during its run. It revolved around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress living in the fictional rural town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Lauren Bowles, Carrie Preston, Chris Bauer, Deborah Ann Woll, Joe Manganiello and the late Nelsan Ellis also starred.

HBO is not done with True Blood yet.
TV Line is reporting that a reboot of the series is in the works, but it will be a complete overhaul of the original concept.
Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre is attached to shepherd the project, while the original series creator, Alan Ball, is reportedly in line to return as an exec producer.
True Blood was a roaring success story for HBO, but it went out with one of the most divisive final seasons in the history of TV.
But this is the age of the reboot, and any semi-popular franchise of the last couple of decades is fair game to be brought back in some capacity.
Ball was with True Blood as showrunner for its first five seasons and had little input in the final two, arguably the worst seasons of the series.

Although many biopics are formulaic enterprises, hitting familiar beats as the subject rises and falls and falls in love and writes that really popular song, they’re a vital element of entertainment industry. Biopics allow filmmakers to humanize our myths, mythologize our contemporaries, re-evaluate history at a fundamentally human level, and catalogue our present so that future generations can understand what the hell we are going through. It’s been an entire decade full of great biopics, too many to fit in a conventional list, but when all is said and done, we have to call these the ten absolutely essential films in the genre from the 2010s.
Runners-Up: “127 Hours,” “Behind the Candelabra,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Dolemite is My Name,” “Jackie,” “Mr. Turner,” “Rocketman,” “Southside With You,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “The Wind Rises”
10. “Stan & Ollie” (2018)

Adapting books for television (or movies) has always come loaded with pros and cons.
On the one hand, you have a built-in fan base, ready-made characters and settings, and a tried-and-true plot.
Related: Enjoy Unlimited access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. Watch Anywhere. Cancel Anytime!
On the other, you have purist fanatics ready to tear you a new one if your actualization of their 'verse doesn't meet their expectations on Every level.
I admit I may have dabbled in the fanatical side of things at times myself.
However, I (usually) understand the need to make changes to the original narrative. It may need updating, depending on when the book was written, or it may require simplifying if the source material is too convoluted for a television audience to follow.
Characters are trickier because readers get very attached to their characters.

True Blood, created by Alan Ball, and based on the Charlaine Harris books, was one of HBO's most popular shows. While most of it was solid, there were some parts of the show that became infuriating to fans and were viewed as a mess. Despite that, the show retained its fanbase, who watched the show regardless of the issues that saw it slow to a sometimes painful slog, especially in its last season. It was gratuitous in nature and often emulated other shows without the depth and clarity. Nevertheless, it was still considered by most to be a fun show worth watching, with great acting, storylines that were interesting (even if they did at times run amok and eventually conk out), good special effects, and vibrancy.

“True Blood” creator Alan Ball appeared Sunday at a 10th-anniversary screening of the pilot episode at L.A.’s Vulture Festival and, while delivering a live commentary, he dropped a few details regarding a “True Blood” live musical, which has been in the works since being announced back in 2014. Composer Nathan Barr is behind the project and, according to Ball, the music he’s heard has been “pretty good.”
As for the play’s story, Ball said, “It tells the story of vampires coming out of the closet, and [Sookie and Bill’s] love story. Ultimately, it really departs from the books and follows vampires not being good for this society, so they end up going back in the closet.” With such a downer ending, Ball described the musical’s storyline as more of an opera than anything else.
