Colin Farrell is partnering with Oscar winner Edward Berger for Netflix feature “Ballad of a Small Player.” The recent Emmy nominee stars as a high-stakes gambler whose past debts catch up with him.
Berger recently directed the popular “Conclave” and first helmed history-making “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings, and Tilda Swinton also star in “Ballad of a Small Player,” which is adapted from Lawrence Osborne’s novel. Rowan Joffe wrote the script.
The synopsis reads: “When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation.”
Berger, Mike Goodridge, and Matthew James Wilkinson produce the feature, which was announced in April 2024. Berger will next direct Brad Pitt in another novel adaptation, this time for Tim Winton’s “The Riders.” The “Bones and All” scribe David Kajganich,...

The Portland, Oregon-based Laika has, in its first 20 years, become as identifiable an animation brand as Studio Ghibli or Pixar.
The studio is known for their handcrafted stop-motion-animated tales that flirt with the macabre and, while being (so far at least) for all audiences, never forgo their edge. And, in celebrating their 20th anniversary leading up to the release of their latest feature “Wildwood” next year, the company is pulling out all the stops, with a lineup of new product releases, partnerships, exhibitions and publishing initiatives. This includes everything from a redesign of the official site (by creative agency Monks) to new merchandise coming to the official shop to a series of videos from Devon Rodriguez (you can see an exclusive video below) to a Rizzoli coffee table book called “Laika: The Magic Behind a Stop-Motion Dream Factory.” For the next year, everything is truly coming up Laika.

Luca Guadagnino is a loyal collaborator. He’s worked with Timothée Chalamet and Dakota Johnson twice, Tilda Swinton four times, but the people he’s worked with most frequently are his screenwriters. Over the years, IndieWire has spoken multiple times with Guadagnino’s go-tos, David Kajganich and Justin Kuritzkes, each time learning more about what it takes to collaborate with one of cinema’s most respected and revered filmmakers.
Kajganich is known for penning Guadagnino’s adaptations of “A Bigger Splash,” “Suspiria,” and “Bones and All,” while Kuritzkes wrote “Challengers” as a spec script, prompting the filmmaker to later ask him to help conceive the screenplay for the William S. Burroughs-inspired “Queer.” Keep reading below to find out the lessons they learned working with the subversive, yet alluring creative.

Riding high on the successes of war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and papal conspiracy thriller Conclave, filmmaker Edward Berger has had his name linked to all sorts of eyebrow raising projects — from Ocean's 14 to a new Bourne movie. But while both of those particular whispers seem to have proven premature, it does look like Berger is set to work with Ocean's alumni Brad Pitt after all, on a very different kind of joint to Steven Soderbergh's heist flicks. According to Deadline, Berger will direct Pitt in an A24 adaptation of The Riders, Australian author Tim Winton's Booker Prize nominated 1994 bestseller.
Winton's book — which follows Australian father Fred Scully as he tries to uncover the reason why wife Jennifer has suddenly abandoned him and their seven-year-old daughter Billie, rendered mute by having been left to fly from Australia to Ireland on her own...

A24 is backing The Riders, which has Brad Pitt starring and Edward Berger directing. A bit more information on the movie here.
We’ve been waiting for what seems like an age to find out what Edward Berger’s follow up to Conclave will be, but now the director is now being attached to projects with alarming haste.
He’s been continously linked to reviving superspies on both sides of the Atlantic in the form of both James Bond and Jason Bourne, but Berger was eventually announced as the director of Barrier, a time travel thriller starring Austin Butler. Beyond that though, it sounds as though the filmmaker will be teaming up with Brad Pitt to take on a globe-spanning thriller for A24.
The project is set to be an adaptation of author Tim Winton’s novel The Riders, and follows – per Wikipedia’s plot description:

Cannes — Soo Hugh, the showrunner of “Pachinko,” is advancing on multiple projects with a view to co-producing with or shooting in Korea or teaming with a Korean partner, she told on the eve of France’s Canneseries TV festival where she is serving on the main jury and was the subject of a Meet With keynote on April 25.
The Korean connection seems only natural. Hugh first made a large impact with AMC’s 2018 supernatural survival thriller “The Terror” Season 1, co-showrun with David Kajganich and set in the Arctic over 1845-48.
She then garnered glowing reviews for Apple TV+’s “Pachinko,” a series made with extraordinary sweep tracing down the generations from 1915 Korea under Japanese thrall to 1989 Japan the story of a family of Zainichi – Koreans who lost everything under Japanese rule and were forced to emigrate to Japan as second-class citizens.

This post contains mild spoilers for "Blood Creek."
Vampire horror movies are a dime-a-dozen, often falling into the same genre trappings or retreading familiar storylines. This is not always a bad thing, though, as long as there's fun to be had: films like "Blade" or "Van Helsing" entertain us by expertly balancing thrilling action with dramatic tension while knowing it is best not to indulge in self-seriousness. Well, what about an odd little vampire tale that is both campy and self-serious, as well as equal parts ridiculous and entertaining? Welcome to Joel Schumacher's unforgettable "Blood Creek," where a Nazi vampire scholar named Richard Wirth (a young Michael Fassbender) wreaks havoc after being freed from captivity by two brothers who really should have known better. Henry Cavill and Dominic Purcell play Evan and Victor Marshall, respectively, and it is up to this duo to try and stop this near-immortal Nazi...

You used to hear the refrain from horror film fanatics with a lot more frequency – the original was so much scarier.
And while this is still true to some degree (the films of John Carpenter have been remade with an oddly uniform lousiness), there are still plenty of horror films that have been remade well. Sometimes the remakes are just as good as the original. In rare cases, it even surpasses the original.
Here is our definitive list of the very best horror remakes ever.
(United Artists) “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978)
Don Siegel’s 1956 classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is based on Jack Finney’s story “The Body Snatchers,” which was serialized in Collier’s in 1954 and published as a novel shortly after, has been remade several times over the years. But the very best iteration is still the 1978 version, the first since Siegel’s, from director Philip Kaufman and writer W.D. Richter.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Terror season 1, episode 10!
AMC's supernatural horror series The Terror is inspired by the real-life doomed expedition of Captain Franklin and his crew on the Hms Terror, as they tried to find a way through the frozen Arctic, so most of the characters in The Terror are based on the real crew members. The Terror creator and showrunner David Kajganich was a professional wilderness instructor and tour guide before he became a writer, and he became fascinated by the story of Captain Franklin and his men, describing it as "an unnerving mystery" in a Screen Daily interview.
Not much is known about the real Edward Little, but the character, played by Matthew McNulty, is a loyal, capable officer, and an introverted, thoughtful man. In The Terror season 1 finale, Little is found dying in his tent with multiple piercings in his face, attached to gold chains.

Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.
Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

Summer is here, and if you're anything like me, you're ready for July to be over after the last several weeks of unbearably hot weather. I've already gotten a head start on the spooky season by taking in some summer scares over the past month (check out our picks for the best horror movies streaming right now), with plans to keep barreling ahead until further notice. Luckily, as chance would have it, August's batch of new arrivals on Netflix is packed with either horror titles or horror-adjacent offerings. That includes the multiple AMC shows premiering on the streamer on August 19, not least of all the best vampire series you're not watching. So, should you be so inclined, join me on the dark side as we get our macabre on with stories of blood-suckers, cannibals, killer robots, and the scariest thing of all: a mentally unwell person who really, really wants to be famous.

Recalling the first time one of his films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a young filmmaker remembered how the duration of the standing ovation the audience gave seemed to grow with every retelling in the media. In the room, he clocked about “a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, [but] by the time I had got back to L.A., it had grown to 20 minutes,” he said. “I said: ‘Wait a minute, I’m happy with six. I never even had a two-minute ovation.’ ”
That director was Steven Spielberg. The film was E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, which closed the 35th Cannes festival in 1982. Even back then, they were timing standing ovations — and arguing about just how long a festival audience stayed on its feet clapping. There’s a long a tradition of using that figure, preferably inflated, as a marketing hook in your movie’s rollout.

Following a nearly five-year absence, AMC is revisiting anthology The Terror for a third cycle.
The basic-cable network on Tuesday, ahead of its time at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, announced that the horror franchise will return for a third season and will be subtitled Devil in Silver, with the new cycle based on the book of the same name by Victor Lavalle.
The author will team with Chris Cantwell (AMC’s own Halt and Catch Fire) to write the six-episode season, which is expected to air on the cabler in 2025.
AMC says Devil in Silver “tells the story of Pepper — a working-class moving man, who through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital — an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets,...

Bones and All combines elements of romance and horror, with a strong atmosphere that adds to the overall experience. In the shocking ending, Maren's mother tries to kill her, leading Maren to initially reject love. However, she later reunites with Lee, and they try to live a normal life together. I hate to be the one to inform you of this, but Bill Skarsgård has revealed he will not be returning to the role of Pennywise for the upcoming "It" prequel series, "Welcome to Derry."
"Yeah, we'll see what they come up with and what they do with it. As of now, I'm not currently involved with it," the actor explained during an interview with Jake's Takes. "If someone else gets to do it, my advice would be: Do it your own. Make it your own. Have fun with it. What I found pleasurable about that character is how abstract he was."
Is this a super sad but understandable choice for Skarsgård, considering the actor shouldn't be unfairly imprisoned by his most famous character? Most rational folks would say yes here, and I definitely agree. Skarsgård is a great performer, and it obviously wouldn't be doing his skills justice to...

In a year in which the frontrunners for Best Adapted Screenplay are still unclear, the USC Libraries naming the finalists for the 35th annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards offer more insight into what scripts most stand out. Its voter base is a mix of academics, industry professionals, and critics.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives out awards every single year, and like any other group, over time it’s clear that they have their favorites. Serious dramas reign at the Oscars, so much so that it’s a genuine shock when genre films get any serious attention outside of the technical categories.
