Six years after Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters, a long-gestating sequel appears to still be in the works. Director Robert Rodriguez gave a hopeful update about the next installment in the franchise.
In an interview on the Joe Rogan Experience, Rodriguez opened up about wanting to make another Alita film. "Yeah, we want to do another one for sure," he said, going on to talk about how parts of the set are still at his studio. "That whole city is still in my parking lot. 20-foot ceilings, seven streets. It's like the largest standing set in the country, if not the world." Alita: Battle Angel was released back in 2019 with Rosa Salazar starring as Alita through performance-capture CGI animation.

Everyone remembers 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel. The cyberpunk movie with boundless action and a badass heroine captured everyone’s attention. While the initial audience reaction was less than encouraging, the movie gained massive attention and praise for its visual excellence afterward.
The CGI was fantastic, and people wanted to see more of Alita and Iron City. 6 years later, and we are yet to get a sequel for the film. While this explanation may sound crazy, the reason for this massive delay is James Cameron’s love for Avatar’s Pandora and its inhabitants, the Na’vi.

It has now been six years since audiences were introduced to the cyberpunk world of director Robert Rodriguez’s action outing, Alita: Battle Angel. After waiting patiently, the filmmaker has now revealed the news that fans want to hear.
Appearing recently on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the director declared that he is still fighting to return to the Iron City and get Alita: Battle Angel 2 made. While he was short on details regarding where they are in the production process, if they are anywhere at all, Rodriguez did reveal that one of the main sets is still standing, and he’s eager to bring the next chapter in the Alita saga to the big screen.

The cyberpunk world of ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ still has stories to tell. Director Robert Rodriguez recently shared his excitement about returning to Iron City for a sequel. He believes Alita’s journey is far from finished, and I can’t help but agree. The 2019 film left us with a cliffhanger, and the idea of diving back into that gritty, futuristic universe feels thrilling.
Rosa Salazar brought Alita to life as a cyborg with no memory, pieced together by Dr. Ido, played by Christoph Waltz. The story, based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga ‘Gunnm,’ follows Alita navigating the dangerous streets of Iron City. She discovers her past as a skilled warrior while battling foes and mastering Motorball, a brutal cyborg sport. The movie earned over $405 million worldwide, making it Rodriguez’s biggest box office hit, despite a mixed critical response.
Rodriguez has been vocal about wanting to continue Alita’s story.

It's been six years since Alita: Battle Angel was released in theaters, and it has been a few years since James Cameron announced that a sequel is in the works. While a release date has yet to be revealed, its director, Robert Rodriguez, shared his thoughts on the project's progress.
In an interview with Joe Rogan, Rodriguez emphasized that Alita's journey in the Iron City is far from over and said he wanted to make another movie based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series. The filmmaker has previously stated that he was doubtful that a sequel would come to light due to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. But his mindset changed when he saw more Fox films coming out. If a follow-up feature were to be made, he and Cameron would have enough material to make two more movies.
It's not just Rodriguez who wants an Alita: Battle Angel sequel.

Edward Norton is reportedly friends with filmmaker James Cameron, but they've only worked together on a film once: "Alita: Battle Angel," which Cameron wrote and produced and in which Norton made a cameo. Cameron also offered Norton a chance to be in "Avatar: The Way of Water" — so why did Norton pass up the chance to visit Pandora?
I still hold out hope for an "Alita" sequel — me and the entire so-called "Alita army." The first film was a pleasant surprise and there's plenty more of Yukito Kishiro's "Battle Angel" manga to adapt. The film teased that Alita (Rosa Salazar) would finally come face-to-face with Desty Nova (Norton's character), her flan-loving mad scientist nemesis.
In 2019, "Alita" director Robert Rodriguez discussed Norton's casting in an interview with Digital Spy: "[Cameron and I] both knew Ed. Neither of us had worked with Ed. But Ed's really smart. Like Jim, he's very, very smart." While...

Chapter 52 marks the first new release since March 2024. Earlier, in January 2024, Kishiro announced on his blog that he had completed chapters 47 to 51. Kodansha published those chapters between January and March of last year.

When James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters in 2019, it brought Yukito Kishiro’s beloved manga to life in a dazzlingly ambitious way. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by Cameron, the film delivered a high-octane, cyberpunk adventure, complete with cutting-edge visuals and a story that fans fell in love with. Fans especially loved Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Alita, a cyborg getting through the dangerous Iron City, and the story left audiences hungry for more. But, five years later, the long-awaited sequel remains a "what if".
Despite its moderate box office success, Alita: Battle Angel has found a new surge in popularity on Netflix, where it climbed to the platform’s Global Top 10 charts in November 2024. The renewed interest shows that Alita's story still has many fans who love it. But with no concrete sequel plans on the horizon, fans are left wondering why Hollywood's best anime adaptation remains incomplete.

A quietly influential manga is continuing its ruminations on AI as Battle Angel Alita's mangaka Yukito Kishiro confirms a new series to debut in 2025. Emerging from the booming fascination with cybernetics and AI futures during the 1980s and 1990s, Battle Angel Alita is a dystopian journey in a distant future about an amnesiac cyborg who wakes up only remembering a form of martial arts instinctually, called Panzer Knst. Alita becomes a bounty hunter and joins up with different allies as part of a quest to discover her past.
Best described as a work of cyberpunk existentialism, Battle Angel Alita might ring most true with fans of Nier: Automata and its anime adaptation. Regarded as one of the best manga about AI, Battle Angel Alita was actually fairly short at only 124 chapters. However, it spawned a franchise set within the same universe which has been running strong (albeit with some...

It is a known fact that most live-action adaptations are ridden with controversies. Be it whitewashing or inauthenticity, films, and anime adaptations are often met with contempt. Like most anime live-action films, Alita: Battle Angel, wasn’t exempt from its fair share of controversy. This holds especially true with whitewashing.

Director Robert Rodriguez emerged from the indie movie renaissance in the early 1990s with a vibrant and inventive canon of motion pictures. Along with his friend Quentin Tarantino, he found inspiration in pulp genres and B-movies, which he elevated thanks to a sly sense of humor and impressive narrative inventiveness. That resulted in many of his signature films, particularly the mariachi trilogy of actioners, and his wild vampire movie From Dusk Till Dawn.
These days, he's probably most associated with the groundbreaking Mandalorian series for the Star Wars saga, and its follow-up, The Book of Boba Fett. He remains firmly committed to theatrical films, however, which encompass his best-known and most critically acclaimed works. Retro anime often gets overshadowed by popular titles, but older sci-fi series hold immense weight with bold predictions for the future. Battle Angel Alita tells a captivating cyberpunk story that delves into identity & redemption through a female cyborg's adventures. Space Pirate Captain Harlock stands out with its biting social commentary and provocative storytelling that remains relevant even in 2024.
Theres a rich backlog of older anime that have slipped through the cracks and fallen into obscurity because they never had a proper localized release or dedicated streaming service to put a spotlight on them. Theres just so much content out there that its easy for retro anime titles to get lost to time, especially when their more popular peers can steal focus and dominate the narrative. Anime caters to a wide range of genres, but the medium's been doing truly impressive things with science fiction for decades now.

When producer Jon Landau and others brought to screens the ambitious adventure story of Alita: Battle Angel, it seemed to be the start of great things. However, in the years that have followed the 2019 blockbuster, there has been little in terms of significant movement towards the creation of a sequel, even though the film's creative team have remained consistently optimistic. A live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's manga series of the same name, Alita: Battle Angel was a modest hit at the box office and producer Landau offers a confident update regarding a sequel.

Veteran producer Jon Landau has been reminiscing about the 2019 manga adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel – and reckons Disney could be persuaded to make a sequel.
Some films – apparently at random – seem destined to make a far bigger splash once they’ve been out of cinemas for a few years. Alita: Battle Angel, the 2019 sci-fi action flick directed by Robert Rodriguez from James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis’ script, is certainly one of them.
Though at the time it made a reasonably healthy $405m at the box office, in the years since the adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga has grown a sizeable cult following. As an original, action-heavy sci-fi flick, it’s an increasingly rare beast. Like Oblivion and Edge Of Tomorrow before it, the 2010s might not have been inundated with blockbuster zippy-shooty action – but the gift of hindsight shows there’s a fair few gems that fall into the “just...

Director Robert Rodriguez provides another promising update on Alita: Battle Angel 2, affirming that he and producer James Cameron talk about the sequel often. The first movie's more modest box office performance combined with Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox complicated initial plans for a sequel. Last year, however, Cameron and Rodriguez started being much more vocal about their desires to make another movie, with the former strongly suggesting this past summer that plans are in motion.
Alita: Battle Angel 2 gets another hopeful update from director Robert Rodriguez. Released in 2019, Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel is based on Japanese manga Battle Angel Alita created by Yukito Kishiro. The film performed only modestly well at the box office, but would eventually find a passionate audience in the years after its release. Enthusiasm for a sequel now remains high, and both Rodriguez and producer James Cameron have expressed interest in returning for an additional installment.

Alita: Battle Angel 2 pushes through with director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron in renewed talks to develop sequels.
Rodriguez said it would now be easier to film the sequel to Alita: Battle Angel, now that 20th Century Studios resumed production after its acquisition by Disney. "Jim and I always talk about how we'd love to do another Alita," he said in an interview with The Wrap. "That studio [20th Century] was bought by another studio [Disney]. The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

After years of uncertainty, producer James Cameron has seemingly confirmed that Alita: Battle Angel 2 and a third film are actually moving forward. Released in 2019 director Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel serves as an adaptation of Japanese manga Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro. The film earned generally positive reviews and was a lukewarm success at the box office but two planned sequels have thus far failed to come to fruition.
Now, however, in a recent interview with Forbes regarding why he chose to sell his California mansion, Cameron, in his explanation, seemingly reveals that multiple Alita: Battle Angel sequels are happening. The producer doesn't reveal any details or timelines, but development will presumably take place between his work on the three remaining Avatar sequels. Check out Cameron's full comment below:

Lana Condor voices her support for Alita: Battle Angel 2, joining a growing list of stars and producers. Based on Yukito Kishiro beloved manga series Gunnm, director Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel was released in 2019. The film earned a somewhat mixed response from critics and was only a mild success at the box office, which means a sequel has been hard to get off the ground. Alita: Battle Angel was a hit with audiences, though, and has only grown in popularity in the years since its release thanks to streaming.
Now, in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Condor, who plays Koyami, expresses interest in seeing Alita: Battle Angel 2 come to life. While Koyami plays a relatively small role in the first movie's story, the actor is evidently keen on revisiting the franchise's unique universe. Check out Condor's full comment below:

Alita: Battle Angel was a surprise in more ways than one. As the highest-grossing Robert Rodriguez movie to date, Alita: Battle Angel introduced an entire new audience to the long-running science-fiction series of the same name originally created by Yukito Kishiro. After being found in a junkyard and repaired, an amnesiac cyborg becomes a Hunter-Warrior bounty hunter to reclaim her memories and carve out her own destiny.
While initial reactions to the title character's uncanny appearance were mixed, the film has been a cult darling since its initial release in 2019, being the last film produced by 21st Century Fox before its subsequent Disney acquisition. Director Robert Rodriguez remains hopeful that plans for Alita: Battle Angel 2 will continue to move ahead following recent comments about the project from producer Jon Landau. Based on the Japanese manga created by Yukito Kishiro, 2019’s live-action Alita: Battle Angel adaptation was originally intended to set up multiple sequels, though these plans were later cast into doubt following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Hopes for the continuation of the series, however, were recently reignited when Landau suggested he was actively speaking with Rodriguez and star Rosa Salazar about potentially returning for a sequel.
During a recent interview with Collider, Rodriguez was asked about the plans for Alita: Battle Angel 2 and where the project was currently sitting. Admitting that he was initially unsure that a sequel would ever happen, the director reveals that his hopes for a return to the property were buoyed by seeing other Fox projects move ahead.

Alita: Battle Angel is something of an anomaly within the anime/manga fandom. Though well-known among hardcore and old-school aficionados, it's never been given its deserved due, especially regarding its influence on cyberpunk anime. If anything, it's more known by some for its 2019 live-action Hollywood adaptation.
The Alita: Battle Angel movie is finally getting a sequel, and this only highlights further how important the source material is. From playing a part in how anime franchises like it developed to exploring themes emblematic of its genre, Alita paved a path for similar 1980s/1990s Japanese franchises. Perfectly encapsulating everything that makes cyberpunk such a great avenue for storytelling, the Alita manga is far more than just a storyboard for a live-action movie.

Alita: Battle Angel 2 could have some exciting new developments born out of Avatar: The Way of Water. One of James Cameron's long-pursued pet projects based on Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita manga series, Alita: Battle Angel was finally realized with Cameron co-writing and producing and Robert Rodriguez coming aboard as director. When James Cameron set out to adapt Yukito Kishiro's acclaimed cyberpunk manga "Gunnm," also known as "Battle Angel Alita," he made the decision to shelve the project for 20-something years until technology caught up to his requirements for the film's world-building. This is a quintessentially James Cameron thing to do, given that he is the kind of director who knows how to be patient enough until he has the best tools to translate his ambitious artistic visions into reality. By the time Cameron had access to the right kind of technology for the long-gestating "Alita: Battle Angel," he found himself preoccupied with "Avatar," a project that demanded meticulous dedication (and ended up altering the trajectory of performance capture technology in filmmaking forever). As a result, Cameron handed over the reins to long-time friend Robert Rodriguez, while still being involved with the adaptation as a producer and supervising its creative direction.

When James Cameron was first introduced to Yukito Kishiro's manga "Battle Angel Alita" in 1999, he fell so in love with the story that he began developing a movie adaptation barely a year later. Just read the manga and you'll see why Cameron was drawn to it. The story takes place in an apocalyptic future where humans incorporate technology into their bodies and become cyborgs — that's the story of "Terminator" too. The chance to realize such an out-there world in live-action must have also been a tempting challenge for a special effects wizard like Cameron.
Cameron was also likely drawn to "Alita" for its emotional core. The titular female cyborg falls for a young thief named Hugo, who desires to go to the hovering city of Zalem. When he tries climbing to it, he's picked off by the defenses and falls to his death. Losing Hugo and having to carry...

Christoph Waltz reveals that he would be willing to return for an Alita: Battle Angel sequel. And during the Avatar: The Way of Water press tour, producer Jon Landau specifically mentioned an interest in returning to Alita. Cameron and Rodriguez even swore a virtual blood oath recently to make another Alita film. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, promoting his new Prime Video series The Consultant, Waltz reveals that he is interested in returning for a potential Alita: Battle Angel sequel.

The 1990s were a bountiful time for fans of cyberpunk, that beautiful science fiction subgenre that deals in transhumanism, the dangers of corporate rule, and exploring the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Films like "Johnny Mnemonic" would introduce the cyberpunk concepts of the 1980s to a wider audience through the magic of the movies, but there are many other, less well-known cyberpunk creations that deserve some love. While it's not technically a movie, the 1993 anime Ova "Gunnm," released in the west as "Battle Angel," is about an hour long and was released in the U.S. on a single VHS, so it sure felt like a movie. It's also an excellent adaptation of one of the best sci-fi manga series ever that inspired James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez to do everything they could to make a live-action adaptation a reality.

Released in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel follows a scrapped android, played by Rosa Salazar, who is brought back to life and refurbished by a compassionate cyber-doctor in the year 2563. The film, which is directed by Robert Rodriguez, is adapted from Yukito Kishiro's popular manga series, Gunnm, also known as Battle Angel Alita in English. Alita: Battle Angel earned mostly positive reviews from critics, with particular praise levied at the movie's visual effects and action sequences.

Avatar: The Way of Water's tremendous box office success makes a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel significantly more likely. Avatar: The Way of Water was finally realized 13 years after the release of 2009's Avatar, itself being a return to directing for Cameron after 1997's Titanic. In between the Avatar sequels, Cameron also succeeded in realizing another pet project of his with 2019's Alita: Battle Angel. Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga Gunnm, Cameron co-wrote and produced the film with Robert Rodriguez directing.
During the press tour for The Way of Water, Cameron and producer Jon Landau made numerous comments indicating they hope to finally get Alita 2 rolling, with Cameron and Rodriguez even swearing a "blood oath" for it during one interview. With all three and leading lady Rosa Salazar all still clearly interested in continuing the Alita universe, it remains a question of 20th Century Studios's parent company Disney giving it the go-ahead.

The momentum for Alita: Battle Angel 2 grows, as James Cameron and Robert Rodriquez swear a blood oath to make the Alita sequel. After years of developing the live-action manga adaptation for himself, James Cameron eventually passed the baton to Robert Rodriguez to make Alita so he could focus on Avatar sequels. The 2019 movie proved to be a possible success story for 20th Century as it made over 400 million worldwide. The movie was meant to launch a franchise, but Disney's acquisition largely put plans for the future on hold, and Cameron and Rodriguez then became busy elsewhere.
Since Alita: Battle Angel's ending directly set up a sequel, it has long been clear that there is room for the film franchise to continue. Now, producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez have sworn a blood oath to make Alita 2. The moment came as part of a virtual interview between the two filmmakers for Variety.
