CBS News named Tanya Simon the new executive producer of “60 Minutes,” making her just the fourth executive to lead the program in its nearly 60 years on air and the first woman to do so. She takes the reins of the show at a tumultuous time, when the venerable newsmagazine has become enmeshed between the machinations of the Trump administration and corporate parent Paramount Global.
Simon has been overseeing the program since its previous EP, Bill Owens, stepped down in April, citing interference in the show’s editorial processes by Paramount. Wendy McMahon, the CBS executive who ran CBS News and its local stations, left a few weeks afterward, noting that she and the company had different views of how to run operations.
Mondays’ announcement makes her role an official one, rather than an interim post. “It is a privilege to lead ’60 Minutes’ and its formidable team of journalists,” Simon said in a prepared statement.

Skydance Media CEO David Ellison met with FCC chairman Brendan Carr and other agency staffers this week to discuss the pending regulatory decision on the company’s merger with Paramount Global, where topics included news coverage.
According to a filing with the FCC, Ellison and his legal counsel, Matthew A. The meetings with a CEO of an acquiring company and the FCC chairman can be an indication of a pending decision, but not always.

In a widely expected but still stunning decision, Paramount Global has agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit from President Trump, who sued over an October interview that 60 Minutes conducted with Kamala Harris.
Under the deal, announced Tuesday evening, the money will go to Trump’s presidential library. It involves an agreement from Paramount, which will not apologize as part of the settlement, to release 60 Minutes transcripts of interviews with presidential candidates after they’ve aired, according to a statement from the company.
By most legal observers’ thinking, the lawsuit was destined for dismissal because of industry-wide norms related to editing interviews. But the deal provides a pathway to regulatory approval of Paramount’s sink-or-swim merger with Skydance.
At the Paramount shareholder meeting Wednesday morning, co-ceo George Cheeks addressed the settlement, telling attendees that “yes, the company has agreed in principle to settle the lawsuit, and as reported,...

Tanya Simon, the daughter of the late 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon, has been executive-producing the newsmagazine show on an interim basis since Bill Owens’ shocking resignation. The current crop of 60 Minutes correspondents have been lobbying Paramount Global to make it official.
On Friday, Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter reported that Lesley Stahl, Scott Pelley, Bill Whitaker, Anderson Cooper, Sharyn Alfonsi, Jon Wertheim and Cecilia Vega — the whole gang of 60 Minutes correspondents — collectively wrote and signed a letter in May urging Paramount co-ceo George Cheeks to officially name Simon as the show’s executive producer.
Owens resigned as 60 Minutes EP in April in protest of what he believed to be a dwindling ability to independently control the show’s editorial positions. In other words, Paramount corporate was getting in the way of their reporting. Owens’ boss Wendy McMahon resigned as head of CBS News in May, citing similar reasons as Owens.

Updated: The CBS-Paramount Global legal team and representatives for Donald Trump said that they were in “continued mediation” to settle the president’s $20 billion lawsuit against the network over the way that a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was edited.
The update came in a new filing in federal court in Texas in Friday, as the sides asked the judge for an extension of deadlines in filing motions to compel and responses. The judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, quickly granted the extensions.
Trump claimed that CBS was deceptive in the way that the Harris interview was edited, as she was shown giving a different answer to the same question on the 60 Minutes broadcast in October than one shown on a Face the Nation preview the day before.

Former CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley sent a bold message about Donald Trump‘s lawsuit against the network during an appearance on 60 Minutes—and the journalist didn’t mince words with his blunt declaration. On Saturday, June 7, Pelley, 67, sat down with Anderson Cooper, 58, to speak about the lawsuit targeting CBS’ parent company, Paramount Global. The interview came right after CNN aired a live broadcast of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney. In the production, Clooney portrays the late journalist Edward R. Murrow, who famously challenged Senator Joseph McCarthy’s tactics during the Red Scare. “The most important thing is to have the courage to speak, to not let fear permeate the country so that everyone suddenly becomes silent,” Pelley told Cooper. “If you have the courage to speak, we are saved. If you fall silent, the country is doomed,” the journalist continued “It is...

CBS News veteran Scott Pelley sounded the alarm about the possibility of Paramount Global reaching a settlement in the unprecedented lawsuit filed against CBS and “60 Minutes” last year by President Donald Trump.
Pelley took part Saturday night in an interview with CNN anchor and fellow “60 Minutes” correspondent Anderson Cooper that followed CNN’s live telecast of the Broadway play “Good Night, and Good Luck.” The play recounts the landmark moment in 1954 when CBS News legend Edward R. Murrow challenged the sleazy smear tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy at the height of the anti-Communist scare.
“The most important thing is to have the courage to speak, to not let fear permeate the country so that everyone suddenly becomes silent,” Pelley, who formerly held Murrow’s seat as a “CBS Evening News” anchor, said of the role that journalism plays in democracy.

Scott Pelley said that a settlement of Donald Trump’s lawsuit would be “very damaging” to the reputation CBS and Paramount, while the 60 Minutes correspondent also defended a recent commencement speech where he warned of the threats to freedom of speech.
Appearing on CNN’s post show following the live telecast of Good Night, And Good Luck, Pelley sat down down fellow 60 Minutes correspondent and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
“If there is a settlement, and as part of a settlement, there’s an apology, how damaging is that to CBS?”

CNN will likely never telecast a live Super Bowl or Oscars. But the network aims to build a primetime event out of a live telecast of the Broadway play “Good Night, and Good Luck” on Saturday at 7 p.m., filling in the schedule before and after with special coverage tied to the show’s story of journalists who stand up to power.
Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown will lead special live coverage for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s telecast, which will mark a first for Broadway. According to the network, a live Broadway show has never been broadcast in this fashion. CNN plans to air the show, which stars George Clooney and tells the story of CBS News journalist Edward R. Murrow as he covers the divisive tactics of Senator Joseph McCarthy, without commercial interruption, and will stream the program on CNN.com without requiring a subscription.

Lesley Stahl is certain Paramount will pay off Donald Trump to end Potus’ $20 billion 60 Minutes lawsuit, and Scott Pelley exclaims journalism is under attack. However, if Shari Redstone thinks a big check and an apology for a piece last year from the CBS newsmagazine series he didn’t like is enough to grease the regulatory wheels for Skydance’s $8 billion absorption of the company, the California state Senate has a news alert for her.

Scott Pelley, a host of 60 Minutes, was slammed on social media by Maga supporters for delivering an anti-President Donald Trump speech at Wake Forrest University in North Carolina.
Trump filed a $20 billion lawsuit against CBS over its editing of an interview with Kamala Harris last fall. The network is reportedly trying to settle with Trump so the sale of its parent company, Paramount, can proceed without interference.
“Your country needs you,” Pelley declared before Wake Forest’s graduating class. “The country that has given you so much is calling you the class of 2025. Your country needs you, and it needs you today.”
“We discuss, not destroy. But in this moment, this morning, our sacred rule of law is under attack. Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack.
“And insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes, and into our private thoughts.

Jon Stewart, in some kind of reverse Garfield situation, seems to really love Mondays. The Daily Show veteran returned to the satirical news program last year, but on the condition that he only host the show on the first day of the week. This has allowed the rest of the Daily Show cast to divvy up the remaining episodes, kind of like if the news desk were a Boca Raton time-share.

While it initially seemed as though Stewart’s arrangement would only last until the end of the 2024 election season, he later extended his deal to continue hosting The Daily Show “through 2025.” And now it seems as though he wants to stay on even longer than that.
Stewart recently guested on The Bill Simmons podcast, and chatted about his 2015 departure from The Daily Show, which was partially inspired by “the relentlessness of the news cycle and the redundancy of the news cycle,...

CBS News reporter and journalist Scott Pelley has gone viral for his commencement address at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, where he spoke on Monday, May 19, and seemingly took aim at Donald Trump. Pelley’s speech addressed the current political climate in the United States. “Our sacred rule of law is under attack,” Pelley stated. “Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack, and insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes, and into our private thoughts.” “The fear to speak in America. Power can rewrite history with grotesque false narratives,” Pelley continued. He noted that an attack on freedom of speech “can make criminals heroes, and heroes criminals.” Pelley also addressed an attack on diversity practices, as he said, “Diversity is now described as illegal. Equity is to be shunned. Inclusion is a dirty word. This is an old playbook,...

A week after calling out CBS parent Paramount Global over the show’s journalistic independence, 60 Minutes on Sunday ran another hard-hitting segment on Donald Trump, this time over the president’s attacks on law firms.
Trump’s executive orders have threatened to prohibit some of the nation’s largest firms from security clearances, federal agencies and even courthouses, as the president cited their work on behalf of his perceived enemies. The orders even threatened to cancel the government contracts of the firm’s clients.
The show’s correspondent Scott Pelley noted at the outset of the segment that it was “nearly impossible to get anyone on camera for this story because of the fear now running through our system of justice.”
One who did was Marc Elias, a attorney for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and then, in 2020, someone who successfully challenged Trump’s claims of election rigging.

Shari Redstone is no doubt familiar with “The Godfather, Part II.” It is, after all, one of the best-known films in the library of Paramount Global, the company she and her family control. Redstone probably doesn’t have time to watch the 1974 classic this week, but no matter. She’s living it.
“The Godfather, Part II” focuses on the difficult choices made by protagonist Michael Corleone, who opts to preserve his family’s illicit business empire instead of tending to the needs of the actual members of his family. He spends all his time jockeying with rivals and fending off competitors, and in the process loses his spouse and kills off his brother, whose weaknesses give enemies a chance to wreak havoc.
Redstone is no crime boss, but she faces similar wrenching decisions about doing what’s best for members of the Paramount family and what’s best for her own family business.

Correspondent Scott Pelley is reporting the story. On Sunday, he closed out the show by noting the departure of the show’s executive producer, Bill Owens, and calling out CBS’s corporate parent, Paramount Global.
“Bill made sure they were accurate and fair,” Pelley told viewers.

April showers bring May flowers, but May is bringing a whole bouquet of cinematic gems to transition from spring into summer. Perhaps the most timely of all the options listed below is Michael Mann’s biting takedown of American corporatization and its effect on mass media, “The Insider.” Nominated for Best Picture at the 2000 Academy Awards, the film follows “60 Minutes” producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) as he works to cultivate and protect a tobacco company whistleblower (Russell Crowe) who may be carrying the most vital public health story of the 20th century.
Unfortunately, when the legal team behind “60 Minutes” parent company CBS catch wind of the story — amidst a key merger with Westinghouse Electric no less — they do everything they can to keep the news piece from running lest it upend a possible deal. For those paying attention to current affairs, the narrative will have echoes to a...

Did Donald Trump break “60 Minutes”?
Scott Pelley on Sunday night smashed the “in case of emergency” glass — something “60 Minutes” staffers hope they never have to do.
In a rare move that put the inner workings of “60 Minutes” on full display to the public at large, Pelley on Sunday night discussed last week’s surprise exit of Bill Owens — just the third executive producer in the program’s history and its guiding light since taking the role in 2019 — and the pressure the staff felt was being put on the long-running newsmagazine by Paramount Global, parent of CBS News. His appearance teed up one of the most dramatic examples in recent memory of media conglomerates finding themselves at odds with news divisions that are supposed to be independent at a time when they are worried about meddling from the Trump administration.
“Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways. None of our stories has been blocked,...

That ticking noise that begins every 60 Minutes segment? Turns out that’s not a stopwatch. It’s a time bomb.
At least that’s how it’s sounding lately, like the illustrious citadel of American broadcast journalism is on the brink of blowing up. Last night, in the latest shudder suggesting an imminent explosion, correspondent Scott Pelley ended the show with a “Last Minute” segment that all but declared open rebellion against 60 Minutes’ corporate overlords at Paramount and raised a fist in solidarity with longtime executive producer Bill Owens, who just days earlier had bolted CBS in protest over what he called editorial meddling by management.
“No one here is happy about it,” Pelley informed viewers, perched on a stool before a backdrop of the program’s iconic ticking timepiece. “But in resigning, Bill proved one thing — he was the right person to lead 60 Minutes all along.”
