From its first frames, Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins announces itself as an East-meets-West heist thriller, merging Bollywood’s flair for spectacle with the disciplined tempo of global caper films. Saif Ali Khan embodies Rehan Roy, a charismatic burglar who’s lived abroad under a cloud of family disgrace. When crime lord Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat) threatens Rehan’s kin to secure his expertise, the stage is set for a contest of wit, loyalty and high-stakes robbery.

The film’s energy hinges on the tension between Rehan and Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor), an upright investigator whose respect for his quarry hints at comradeship beneath rivalry. Nikita Dutta appears as Farah, Rajan’s spouse, whose shifting devotion becomes a key fault line in the plot. Robbie Grewal and Kookie Gulati’s “Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins” is one of the most insufferable films to emerge in recent times. There are bad films, and then there’s something like this, which throws you into existential angst. Has Hindi cinema sunk this low that such capable actors have to do such films — joyless and overtly manufactured and deathly silly-to continue their careers. This film is one of those that everyone involved would likely distance themselves from just a few years down the line. Other than a great offer of money, no other reason justifies anyone choosing to star in this film, especially Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Bollywood used to make fun crime movies. This is the country of “Don,” of “Bunty Aur Babli” of not one but three “Dhoom” movies. Heck, Netflix’s recent “Dhoom Dhaam” (unrelated to the aforementioned franchise) threw its hat in the ring to respectable results. And while those other examples may be from a bygone era of joyful abandon, the current moment leaves a lot to be desired.

In its defense, Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal’s “Jewel Thief” does not purport to be any kind of caper, but the self-serious wannabe action drama in its place leaves much to be desired. One can’t fault producer Siddharth Anand for committing to more of the same after the success of projects like “Pathaan,” “War,” and “Tiger” — but those were theatrical releases, unlike this one, and did not star Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Netflix’s Jewel Thief was supposed to be some kind of ode to Vijay Anand’s classic, but I don’t think the film does justice to the title. The storyline is extremely weak and predictable, and even after all the efforts put forth by the actors, the end product just isn’t up to the scratch. Also, the age old practice to treat the women characters just like a prop is just as frustrating. Nikita Dutta’s character deserved a better arc. I just hope that Robbie Grewal and Kookie Gulati, the directors of the film, come up with a more engaging narrative if they decide to make a sequel. What’s Bad: The movie is filled with illogical subplots, absurdities, and idiosyncrasies. The dialogues are extremely stereotypical, and except for Jaideep Ahlawat, none of the cast members manage to make an impact. Some of the sub-plots and twists are laughable and cannot even be watched as a guilty pleasure.

There is much to be said about a hostage thriller that seems to move at a breakneck speed. Dhokha, with a colonized sub-title that says ‘Round D Corner’(the ‘D’ being a wave-out to the young audience) is the kind of recreational afternoon pre-siesta movie where you can’t afford to blink.

Something is happening every minute. Some character or the other is doing a personality volte-face. If you don’t stay alert you may end backing the wrong horse.

Allegiances, loyalty and relationships are shuffled constantly. Madhavan is the only one who remains rocksteady. He plays a much-harassed husband Yathaarth Singh whose wife seems to be a bit of a nutcase. She is held hostage in her apartment by a Kashmiri terrorist named Gul(how original!).

Actor Aparshakti Khurana, who will be seen in ‘Dhokha -Round D Corner’ and ‘Berlin’, credits his lighthearted roles for teaching him about emotions and acting. In ‘Dhokha – Round D Corner’, he is playing a Kashmiri terrorist and will be seen doing an action sequence in the movie ‘Berlin’.

Aparshakti said: “Let me tell you first, I love doing all the lighthearted roles I have done. Those were the roles that taught me a lot about emoting and acting. But as an actor, I am a little greedy about trying out new stuff.”

He added: “I want to push myself out of my comfort zone to see myself doing something that has grey or a darker shade. I am also excited, not just for myself, but also because it will be something new for the audience.”

Darshan Kumaar, who’ll be seen with R Madhavan and Aparshakti Khurana in the upcoming film ‘Dhokha – Round D Corner’ after being acclaimed for his role in ‘The Kashmir Files’, has said he was bowled over by its script. He re-read it, so impressed was he by its writing and storytelling.

When asked why he chose such a suspense drama script, Darshan said in a statement, “Usually I read each script only once and decide whether it resonates with me and if I will take it ahead. But, with Kookie sir’s script, I was stumped and intrigued by the story line.”

He added: “I re-read the script because it was simply amazing and interesting to learn the twists and turns as to what transpired in the lives of the characters. That in itself was the deciding factor for me going ahead with the movie.

Bollywood actor Aparshakti Khurana, who is portraying the character of a Kashmiri, went through intense training to get the accent right for the film ‘Dhokha- Round D Corner’.

He was being trained by a Kashmiri tutor for the same.

Aparshakti says: “Dhokha is a very different kind of film. I could not have approached it the same way I had approached my other characters.

“I play the role of a Kashmiri which I haven’t done before and they have a very different accent, which is very unique to them. Getting theA diction of a character right was very important for this one. I went for a Kashmiri tutor to keep it more authentic.”

The movie is a suspense thriller directed by Kookie Gulati, which also stars R. Madhavan, Khushali Kumar and Darshan Kumar in key roles.

Actor R. Madhavan will be seen featuring in a remake of the groovy dance number ‘Mere Dil Gaaye Jaa’, from the 1987 film ‘Dance Dance’, in the upcoming movie ‘Dhokha – Round D. Corner’.

Ever since the first look of Amitabh Bachchan was released from the film “Chehre” directed by Rumy Jafry the audience has been eagerly awaiting more. The makers of the mystery thriller film that stars Emraan Hashmi along with Big B, have resumed the final leg of the movie. The legendary Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is back in action to shoot for the video of the title track in Mumbai. Mumbai, March 28 (Ians) Actress Ileana D'Cruz claims she isn't worried about criticism because everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The actress is currently gearing for the release of the upcoming film "The Big Bull", which co-stars Abhishek Bachchan and is set for an Ott release. The film is based on the securities scam of 1992, and broadly outlines the story of stockbroker Harshad Mehta.

Hansal Mehta's much-feted series "Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story" has already narrated the subject amid much acclaim last year. Ileana claims she is not worried about comparisons.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So, you can have a film come out and be like we saw something like this 10 years ago. People are always entitled to their opinions. You can't have everybody turn up and say we absolutely loved it," Ileana told Ians.

She added: "Some people are going to love it, some probably not,...

A new breed of filmmakers who have veered into the profession from other vocations are drawing inspiration from their past calling. "I have worked at the stock market in 1990 and 1991, so I immediately related to this story and idea. From there, we started researching and working on it. Those times were so different," says Kookie Gulati.

Kookie Gulati's upcoming Abhishek Bachchan-starrer "The Big Bull" is an instance. The film draws its plot from the securities scam of 1992, and is broadly based on stockbroker Harshad Mehta's life and his involvement in financial crimes over a period of 10 years from 1980 to 1990. Gulati reveals how his stint working at the stock market in the past helped him.

Gulati had other references from his own life in the script. "It's basically the struggle of a guy who starts from the beginning and a lot of it actually happened with my father when he came to Mumbai from Ahmednagar.

Mumbai, March 21 (Ians) Hansal Mehta's web series "Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story" seems to have triggered off an interest in our film and web series makers in the subject of scams. As many as five projects are on the way, which talk of the biggest scams to have hit the headlines in India.

Hansal Mehta is, however, reluctant to slot films and series based on the subject as a specific genre. Talking to Ians, he says: "Don't put stories into boxes. All you have to do is tell a good story, whether it is about a scam or love. A story well told, well acted-out and directed in an all-round manner is what counts. A story done in the right way resonates with the audience. It doesn't have to be about a scam or a biopic."
