Janey Godley

Scottish Comedian Janey Godley Dies at 63 Following Cancer Battle
Nicola Sturgeon in Good Morning Britain (2014)
Glasgow, Scotland – Janey Godley, an acclaimed Scottish comedian and social media star, has died at the age of 63 following a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. Known for her viral political satire videos during the Covid-19 pandemic, Godley passed away peacefully at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow with family by her side.

Godley gained widespread popularity for her comedic dubbing of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s coronavirus briefings. Her videos brought much-needed humor to Scotland during challenging times. However, her influence extended far beyond these popular performances through a decades-long career in stand-up comedy and political activism.

The comedian first drew international attention in 2016 by protesting then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at his Turnberry golf resort. Even in her final weeks, Godley showed her characteristic wit and political edge by posting an image of herself wearing a t-shirt with a message directed at Trump.

In November 2021, Godley disclosed her ovarian cancer diagnosis,...

Janey Godley Dead: Scottish Comedian, Donald Trump Antagonist Was 63
Image
Scottish comedian Janey Godley has died aged 63, her family has announced.

Godley had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021 and shared in September of this year that her “chemo ran out of options.”

Godley, a long-established comedian and writer in her native Scotland, found wider fame during the pandemic when she dubbed comedy videos spoofing Scotland’s political leader Nicola Sturgeon’s coronavirus news briefings.

She had previously made headlines across the world in 2016 when she held up a sign stating “Trump is a c**t” outside Donald Trump’s Turnberry Golf Resort prior to his election as the president of the United States.

Despite her health condition, last month Godley managed to go viral on social media once again as she shared a picture of herself holding a t-shirt which said: “Trump is still a c**t.”

Captioning the post, she wrote: “The gift that keeps giving!”...

Donald Trump
Janey - Jennie Kermode - 19115
Donald Trump
As the vast majority of her fans will be aware, Janey Godley is seriously ill. Suffering from ovarian cancer, she doesn’t expect to have much life left to her, and the choice of this documentary to close this year’s Glasgow Film Festival felt like a tribute delivered whilst she was still around to see it. She might at least congratulate herself on having lived to see Donald Trump convicted on 34 counts, having gone viral for following him around a golf course with a sign reading ‘Trump is a cunt’. Janey has never been a shrinking violet. This film captures what was expected to be her last tour, and whilst that may indeed be the case, as long as she’s alive, she’ll be telling the world what she thinks.

Appropriately enough, the film begins with her walking onto a stage – an empty stage, as she and her daughter Ashley,...

Janey
Janey review – behind-the-scenes doc shows standup at her hilarious and heartfelt best
Janey
On tour with her daughter after her cancer diagnosis the Scottish national treasure opens up about her life and finds big laughs in the face of death

Here’s a documentary following the Glaswegian standup comic Janey Godley on her Not Dead Yet Tour; in 2022, Godley was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, and she does the first gig in Inverness a day after chemotherapy. And God, is she funny, with jokes running the gamut from the disgraced peer Michelle Mone living in a static caravan to cancer. Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, also hilarious, does the warm up.

The title of the film is just Janey; no surname necessary – not in Scotland anyway, where Godley has a special place in people’s hearts. During Covid her voiceovers of first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s press conferences went viral (I remember watching one feeling almost guilty for laughing so hard). Before that, in...

George Rr Martin says changes at HBO Max have ‘impacted’ future Game of Thrones projects
Image
George Rr Martin has said changes at HBO Max have “impacted” future Game of Thrones spin-offs.

Earlier this week, the author gave his fans a disappointing update on the various spinoff shows that are in the works at the streamer.

He said that some of his planned shows have been “shelved” for now due to such changes.

In April, HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia merged with Discover. As per Variety, this means that HBO Max’s content slate has been cut in order to reduce costs. Shows including Love Life, Minx, and the reality series FBoy Island have all been cancelled.

Despite the huge success of this year’s House of the Dragon – the finale of the prequel series brought in the highest number of viewers for HBO since GoT – Martin said that the other projects in development are still up in the air.

“Some of those are moving faster than others,...

Tyler Sanders
Tyler Sanders: Emmy-nominated actor’s cause of death revealed
Tyler Sanders
Tyler Sanders’s cause of death has been determined just over six months since he died aged 18.

The young actor, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Leo in the Amazon spinoff series Just Add Magic: Mystery City, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment in June.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner autopsy report obtained by NBC News, Sanders’s death was caused by “fentanyl effects”.

According to the autopsy, Sanders’s friend, who had discovered his unresponsive body, “had been texting with him the night prior and he reported using fentanyl. Drug paraphernalia was identified on scene”.

Later toxicology tests confirmed Sanders had the “potent” drug in his system.

“Fentanyl … is a synthetic opioid, which is approximately 50-100 times as potent as morphine,” the report said, adding that Sanders “had a history of drug use”.

‘I needed to get out’: Robbie Williams reveals his reasons behind Take That departure
Image
Robbie Williams has opened up about his decision to leave Take That, calling the situation at the time a “burning building” from which he had to escape.

The singer first made his name as one-fifth of the Nineties boyband, alongside Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, and Jason Orange.

After joining the band at age 16 in 1990, Williams quickly became a fan favourite and provided lead vocals for some of Take That’s earliest hits, including “Could It Be Magic?” (1992).

He left the band in July 1995, a decision which sparked much media attention and fan upset. Take That disbanded in February 1996, before reuniting as a quartet, without Williams, in 2005. Williams, meanwhile, went on to become a successful solo artist.

A new programme for BBC Sounds, titled Robbie Williams: My Life Thru a Lens, sees the recording artist taking a retrospective look at his career on the 25th anniversary of his first solo album.

The Big Bang Theory: Jim Parsons on starring in an ‘Old Sheldon’ spin-off in 30 years
Image
Jim Parsons has not entirely ruled out a spin-off series based on his character in The Big Bang Theory.

The actor, 49, played Sheldon for the entirety of the hit sitcom, which came to an end after 12 seasons in 2019.

It was Parsons’ decision to leave the sitcom that led to its eventual conclusion. He previously said he was ready “to get out of the security of the show to fully find out what was next for me”.

After the series ended, a spin-off titled Young Sheldon aired in 2017. In it, Iain Armitage plays a younger iteration of Parsons’ character.

Young Sheldon has proven successful, with its fifth series coming to an end in May this year. The show has already been renewed for another two seasons by CBS.

During a recent appearance on Justin Long’s Life Is Short podcast, the actor shed some light on whether he would be up...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Saturday Night Live fans petition for a George Santos skit – and they want Jon Lovitz to play him
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Saturday Night Live fans are urging the sketch show to write a skit based on George Santos.

The US politician has been mired in controversy as of late. Santos is under investigation by Long Island prosecutors, after revelations surfaced that he lied about his religion, education and profession as he campaigned for office.

The Republican has publicly admitted to fabricating key details in his resume. He insisted, however, that he had not committed any crimes and intended to serve in Congress nonetheless.

For example, in his official biography, Santos claims to have graduated from Baruch College, New York City, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance.

In a statement sent to NPR, Baruch College said that they could find no match for a George Santos who was born on 22 July 1988 and graduated in 2010. Find out everything we know about George Santos here.

Given the recent headlines surrounding Santos,...

Super November review – Josie Long in romcom turned fascist nightmare
Long wrote and stars in this likable genre experiment about mates whose lives take a very weird turn

Scottish film-maker Douglas King makes a really intriguing feature debut with this flawed, but distinctly likable microbudget venture. King directs and edits and the standup comic Josie Long is the screenwriter and star. Together, they have devised a genuine genre experiment. Super November is half mumblecore relationship comedy, half dystopian nightmare.

Josie Long is Josie, who works at a library in Glasgow, where Janey Godley has a funny role as Donna, the permanently hungover chief librarian with an intense dislike of the children’s entertainer who comes in to do the weekly storytelling session (“He makes his own kites: who does that?”). Josie shares a flat with her best friend, the gentle Darren (Darren Osborne) and they hang out with their mate Roddy (James Allenby-Kirk).
