‘No One Lives’ – Ryuhei Kitamura’s Gory and Brutal Action Slasher Turns 10 Years Old
Image
After almost passing up No One Lives and mistaking it for something generic, Ryūhei Kitamura set out to make a fun and exciting horror movie. And he more than succeeded without sacrificing the fear and personality found in the original script. With Robert Hall’s bloody practical effects sweetening the pot, this movie ends up being a delightfully gory action-slasher.

The initial setup of No One Lives is both familiar and misleading. The cold open shows an imperiled young woman (Adelaide Clemens) running through the woods. It is only when she is caught by her unseen pursuer does the audience learn her name: Emma. Using a broken piece of glass, she desperately scratches her name, while upside down, in a nearby tree before presumably dying off screen. Several months later, the story shifts to Luke Evans and Laura Ramsey’s characters, who pause their road trip and stop at a motel out in the sticks.

Robert Duvall Knew The Godfather Was Special Before Filming Had Even Wrapped
Image
Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel, "The Godfather," is one of the most acclaimed films of all time. Whether or not you've seen the film, you'll likely recognize some of the iconic lines such as, "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse," or "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli," or the all-star ensemble cast that Coppola assembled which included the likes of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, and many more.

Robert Duvall, who had previously worked with Coppola on "The Rain People" before "The Godfather," played Tom Hagen, the informally adopted son of Brando's Vito Corleone and consigliere and lawyer for the Corleone family. This wouldn't be the final collaboration between the two, as Duvall would go on to appear in a number of Coppola's future films including "Apocalypse Now"; "The Conversation"; and, of course, "The Godfather Part II."

Despite a number of collaborations,...

The Great Beauty, About Time, Riddick: this week's new films
The Great Beauty | About Time | Riddick | Ain't Them Bodies Saints | Museum Hours | Pieta | The Stuart Hall Project | The Great Hip Hop Hoax | No One Lives | More Than Honey | Jadoo | Any Day Now

The Great Beauty (15)

(Paolo Sorrentino, 2013, Ita/Fra) Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, 141 mins

Sorrentino proves himself a worthy successor to Fellini here, tracking modern Roman decadence with staggering exuberance and an eye for the stylishly surreal. Filling the Marcello Mastroianni role is Servillo's world-weary writer and socialite, who stalks the city's elite demi-monde of hedonistic parties, pretentious art, cynical grotesques and faded glories – but finds reveries and regrets around every corner.

About Time (12A)

(Richard Curtis, 2013, UK) Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams. 123 mins

A sci-fi element reinvigorates Curtis's trademarked romcom formula, but there's still a feeling of deja vu to this middle-class love story, in which Gleeson uses his inherited time-travelling powers to woo McAdams – albeit at a cost.

Luke Evans in No One Lives (2012)
FEARnet Movie Review: 'No One Lives'
Luke Evans in No One Lives (2012)
It's safe to say we've seen the "home invasion" thriller thrown at us from every conceivable angle by this point. The premise is nothing new, of course, as those who remember the original Straw Dogs (1971) can remind you, but over the last several years we've seen a whole lot of foreign and/or independent films that involve A) a house, B) some killers, and C) a siege of some unpleasant variety.

Take your pick: Funny Games (either version), Them (aka Ils) and High Tension (aka Switchblade Romance) and Inside, The Purge and The Strangers, The Aggression Scale, the remake of Mother's Day, the long-awaited You're Next, and probably a dozen other movies we've both seen. So right off the bat it should be clear that the film we're here to discuss -- No One Lives -- is nothing close to fresh, original, or particularly novel. But the ravenous horror fans...

Q&A with No One Lives Director Ryuhei Kitamura
No One Lives director Ryuhei Kitamura took part in our latest Q&A session, telling us about his love for Driver, working with Luke Evans and Robert Hall, and what’s next:

Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. What was it about the script for No One Lives that made you want to take on this project?

Ryuhei Kitamura: I loved the script because it was not just about blood and guts. I was fascinated by the character of Driver; a non-stop killing machine doing it all for love. To me this is a twisted love story.

When looking for your lead actor, was Luke Evans your first pick? What made him stand out from the pack and why was he perfect for this role?

Ryuhei Kitamura: Luke was the first and only candidate. I needed someone who was not only...

‘No One Lives’ Review
Stars: Luke Evans, Adelaide Clemens, Lee Tergesen, Derek Magyar, Beau Knapp, America Olivo, Lindsey Shaw, Brodus Clay, Gary Grubbs | Written by David Cohen | Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura

Ryuhei Kitamura’s second American film (his first was the Vinnie Jones starrer The Midnight Meat Train), No One Lives harks back to his early work – the Super 8 short Down to Hell and his most famous flick Versus – putting strangers together in a pitched battle against a common enemy.

The film starts out very much along the typical backwoods/hillbilly slant, as a gang of robbers screw up their latest mansion heist and, to make up for their loses, kidnap a couple in a car instead. It looks as though we’re seemingly headed down the torture route, with our villains set to get the information they need from the couple by any means necessary. However Kitamura flips the script and what the robbers,...

The Comedian, Byzantium, The Big Wedding: this week's new film releases
The Comedian | Byzantium | The Big Wedding | Populaire | The Purge | Blood | Everybody Has A Plan | No One Lives | Man To Man | Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

The Comedian

(15) (Tom Shkolnik, 2012, UK) Edward Hogg, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. 79 mins

There's an uncanny degree of naturalism to this downbeat sketch of a lost London soul, confused over his sexuality, his faltering stand-up career and his place in life. It was made with a Dogme-like set of rules encouraging spontaneous improvisation in real locales. The result is somewhere between Mike Leigh and mumblecore, a meandering slice of life that often hits the truth.

Byzantium

(15) (Neil Jordan, 2013, UK/Us/Ire) Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Sam Riley. 118 mins

There might be little left to say about vampires, but genre veteran Jordan has a better right (and better actors) than most to say it. This tale of two 200-year-old women hiding out in a coastal town is more mature and less gory than most offerings.

They Died of Boredom: Kitamura’s Second Graceless English Language Film

Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura, of Versus (2000) fame, follows up his perplexing guilty pleasure English language debut, The Midnight Meat Train (2008) with No One Lives, a sort of torture porn meets Dexter scenario that manages to come across even more tired than its dated synopsis already sounds. While many will cite Kitamura’s assumed discomfort with the English language as the responsible factor for this atrociously silly film, the real culprit has to be the brain-dead screenplay by David Cohen (who, surprise, surprise, has no other writing credits to his name/pseudonym at the moment), which doesn’t contain one decently written line.

A half naked, terrorized female runs screaming through the woods, and she hurriedly scratches the words “Emma Alive” into the bark of a tree before she’s predictably recaptured. It turns out that Emma (Adelaide Clemens) was kidnapped quite some time ago,...

Hostel New Poster for No One Lives
For those of you thinking I meant to write "Hostile" instead of "Hostel" in that headline, you're mistaken. Also mistaken is the person who designed this next one-sheet for No One Lives if they think it's original. I guess a little Hostel Part II goes a long way.

25 Great Gay Sex Scenes from Modern Movies
Back in 2007, we ran an article called Gay Sex Scenes that Made Movie History. A delightfully naughty exploration of firsts and foresk- ... er, foremosts in terms of gay male intimacy on the silver screen, it celebrated some of the films that blew the celluloid closet to bits, one modesty sock at a time.

Six years later, it's shocking just how far pop culture has come in terms of normalizing gay characters and stories, and how much bolder the gay film audience has grown in demanding films that speak truthfully to their sexual experience (though, it must be said, the films that answer the call are usually decidedly outside of the mainstream). So we've decided to bring you an update to our foundational piece that looks at what has happened since. Of course, since most of the ground breaking was done over the last four decades or so, our focus is...

20 New Images From Kitamura’s Horror No One Lives, Starring Luke Evans & Adelaide Clemens!
No one runs, no one escapes… Well actually, we’re here for No One Lives, an upcoming horror thriller which comes from director Ryuhei Kitamura (yep, The Midnight Meat Train helmer) and stars Luke Evans and Adelaide Clemens in the leading roles. I mean, we finally have a decent look at the movie which premiered this September at Toronto International Film Festival, but is (unfortunately) still without an official release date (January 2013 is expected, though).

Let us start this horror story by saying that David Cohen is responsible for the script which follows a gang of ruthless highway killers who kidnap a wealthy couple only to shockingly discover that things are not what they seem.

Beside the above mentioned Evans (great Evans by the way!) and Clemens, the rest of the No One Lives cast also includes America Olivo, Beau Knapp, Derek Magyar, George Murdoch, Laura Ramsey, Lee Tergesen and Rob Steinberg.
