- Her parents were teens when she was born. They divorced in 1972, her mother remarried and moved them to Sumner, Washington. When Sandra was 11-years-old, her mother divorced for a second time and became depressed and very ill. Sandra became a surrogate mother to her younger siblings; her responsibilities included buying groceries, preparing the meals and handling the family finances.
- After attending the University of Wisconsin, developed a home-decorating line that opened the door to a Martha Stewart-like empire.
