“Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ 71st annual Ace Eddie Awards, which honors the best in film and television editing.

In the comedy film category, the nominees are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks,” “Palm Springs” and “Promising Young Woman.”

The films that were bypassed in the Ace nominations include “Tenet,” “News of the World,” “The Father,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Over the past decade, 90% of the Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing have first been nominated by the American Cinema Editors. The Oscar nominees are heavily weighted toward the Ace dramatic category, with 34 nominees coming from that category since 2010, as opposed to 11 nominees from the comedy category.

The guild, which will hand out its awards in a virtual ceremony on April 17, has a good track record forecasting the Oscar best picture winner — it has predicted 18 out of the last 29 winners. It also has a good record for predicting who wins the best editing Oscar — 23 out of the last 29 winners.

For the first time in Ace’s 70-year history, three foreign language films are among the nominees — “The Farewell,” which is partly in Mandarin, French animated film “I Lost My Body” and Korean-language “Parasite.”

On the television side, the spy thriller “Killing Eve” scored Ace nominations for Dan Crinnion for the “Desperate Times” episode and the “Smell Ya Later” episode for Al Morrow.

Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Jan. 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will be presided over by Ace president Stephen Rivkin.

The most notable omission was “1917,” which contains dozens of cuts but was designed to look as if it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot.

In recent years, more than 90 percent of the Oscar nominees in the Best Film Editing category have first been recognized by the American Cinema Editors. The majority of Oscar nominees have come from the Ace Eddie dramatic category – though for the last two years, the Academy has taken three nominees from the Ace Eddies’ comedy category and only two from the drama category.

It was a busy morning for precursor awards today, wasn’t it? Not only are we still recovering from what went on at the Golden Globes last night, a quartet of important stepping stones to Oscar announced their nominees. The nominations came from the Ace Eddies (the Guild for film editors), the American Society of Cinematographers (the Guild for cinematography), the Art Directors Guild, and of course, the Writers Guild. The latter, as usual, had disqualified some high profile contenders, so that’s important to keep in mind, but the former three have given us a decent look at the likeliest Academy Award nominees in Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, respectively. The four precursors represented Guilds that actually correspond with Academy members, so keep that in mind. Ace Eddie and Adg separate into multiple categories, so that’s worth making note of, as well. Also, as you might imagine,...

“Roma” director Alfonso Cuarón and co-editor Adam Gough led the 9th annual Ace Eddie feature film nominations, joining Barry Alexander Brown (“BlacKkKlansman”), John Ottman (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Tom Cross (“First Man”), and Jay Cassidy (“A Star Is Born”). The awards will be presented on February 1 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Ace announced nominations to recognize outstanding editing in 11 categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed at Ace’s annual awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Friday, Feb. 1. Final ballots open Jan. 11 and close on Jan. 21.

Nominations for the 69th annual edition of the Ace Eddie Awards bestowed by the American Cinema Editors were announced on Monday (Jan. 7). Our top five frontrunners for Best Picture at the Oscars — “A Star is Born,” “BlacKklansman,” “Green Book,” “The Favourite” and “Roma” — number among the 10 feature films in contention here as do several of their lower ranked rivals. The nearly 1,000 members of Ace will get their final ballots on Jan. 11 and have until Jan. 21 to complete them. These kudos, honoring the best cutting in film and television, will be handed out on Feb. 1 in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. (Read our full report on the Ace Eddie Awards nominations.)

In 1992, the Eddies went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two, with five nominees for each of drama and comedy/musical.

First Man, Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody, BlacKkKlansman, and A Star Is Born have been nominated for dramatic feature editing honours by the American Cinema Editors (Ace).

In the television categories, there is recognition for Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in the non-commercial comedy TV category, and Ozark and Bodyguard in the non-commercial dramatic TV contest.

Arriving on DVD without having experienced a Us theatrical release, The Dark Valley toured several smaller film festivals after premiering a year ago at the Berlin International Film Festival. Eric Kissack's “The Gunfighter” is a finalist for the top prize at TheWrap's third annual 2014 ShortList Film Festival. Written by Kevin Tenglin, the story follows a weary gunfighter who walks into a bar, looking for a drink. What he finds instead is a building full of raunchy people and an audible, bloodthirsty narrator. The cast includes Shawn Parsons, Scott Beehner, Eileen O'Connell, Jordan Black and Timothy Brennan, though it's the unseen narrator voiced by “Parks and Recreation” star Nick Offerman who steals the show. The third annual ShortList Film Festival, which runs through August 27, 2014 just announced the 12 finalists.

The 12 finalists include shorts prize winners from the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, the La Film Festival, Tribeca, Aspen, Clermont-Ferrand and other prestigious festivals. The films and filmmakers come from the United States, Mexico, Mozambique, Germany, Brazil and elsewhere around the globe.

All films are available now through August 27 for online voting Here. The shorts will also air on the Epix network August 24 at 6pm Et/3pm Pt and again in Epix’s Drive-In on August 25 12midnight Et/August 24 9pm Pt.

Two winners will each receive $5,000 cash prizes, the Audience Prize sponsored by YouTube and the Industry Prize sponsored by Epix at an awards ceremony on August 28 at the YouTube Space Los Angeles.

The Industry Prize winner, chosen by a jury of independent film experts, will also receive a pitch meeting at Paramount Pictures, MGM or Lionsgate to pitch their next project. The Audience Prize winner determined by popular vote will also receive the use of the YouTube Space for their next project.

Each winner will receive the opportunity to consult with the independent movie studio Cinedigm.

Ned McNeilage’s Showfolk won best documentary, Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story earned best animation, Roman Kaelin claimed best experimental honours for Wrapped and Bouha Kazmi took best music video for The Ramona Flowers ‘Tokyo’.

The screenplay competition prize went to Kevin Walsh for Grocery Day.

I will forever beat the drum that Hollywood needs more westerns because honestly there are only so many times I can say 'I'll be your Huckleberry.' I've not found the limit yet, but trust me I'm working on it. We need more wild west one-liners guys. Luckily 'The Gunfighter' is here to help.  Voice over narration may have fallen out of favor with filmmakers as a lazy way of doling out exposition, but maybe it's time for a comeback. 'The Gunfighter' is a quick clever piece of meta comedy directed Eric Kissack and written by newcomer Kevin Tenglin. It is a promising debut that asks the question, "What if the characters could hear everything the narrator is saying?" The answer is a quickly escalating series of secrets usually reserved for the depths of our super secret inner thoughts we never share even with our best friends or therapists.

Parks and Rec star Nick Offerman narrates this hilarious western genre short film called The Gunfighter. The narrator plays a huge part in this story, not only can the audience hear what he's saying, but so can the characters in the film. The narrator begins to talk about the gunfighter's inner thoughts and feelings as he enters a saloon full of people for a drink. Man From Reno, a Kickstarter-backed movie about a Japanese crime novelist investigating a murder mystery in San Francisco, won the Best Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival. “Its exploration of barriers of age, language and success set against a noir plot line infuses a pop energy into the well observed portrayal of its unique characters,” the jury stated, awarding director Dave Boyle the $5,000 prize. The film stars Ayako Fujitani as the novelist as well as Pepe Serna (Scarface) and Kazuki Kitamura (The Raid 2).

Stray Dog, Debra Granik’s first film since Winter’s Bone, won the festival prize for Best Documentary Feature.

Top brass at the Los Angeles Film Festival unveiled the winners of jury and audience awards as the festival came to a close.

Dave Boyle earned the Narrative Award for Man From Reno, Debra Granik’s Stray Dog took documentary honours and the inaugural La Muse Award was presented to Damian John Harper for Los Ángeles.

Each award carried an unrestricted $5,000 cash prize for the winning director.

Winners of the short film awards each received a $1,500 cash prize.

Best Narrative Short Film went to The Runaway by Jean-Bernard Marlin, while Best Documentary Short Film went to The Queen by Manuel Abramovich. The Award for Best Animated or Experimental Short Film went to Hu Wei’s Butter Lamp.

In the audience awards, best narrative feature went to Kerem Sanga’s The Young Kieslowski and Geeta V Patel and Ravi V Patel’s Meet The Patels prevailed in the documentary strand.

Horrible Bosses 2 has officially started production and stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx are returning. Newcomers Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine have also been confirmed. The press release shared the plot:

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in “Horrible Bosses 2.” But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. I’m laughing already. I enjoyed the first film, I’m just not sold on the idea of a sequel yet. So many sequels.

Watertower Music has announced the details for the soundtrack album of the comedy A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. The album features songs from the movie performed by RZA & Da’vone Mc Donald, Bing Crosby, Augie Rios, Johnny Mathis, Cj Webbe and Neil Patrick Harris who also stars in the film . Also included on the release is one track by Paul Oakenfold and the film’s composer William Ross. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 1, 2011 on Amazon and iTunes. We reported that the latest entry in the Harold & Kumar franchise started filming on June 21st with set photos to prove it, which New Line confirmed today via press release. The studio conveniently included a full cast list. We knew that John Cho and Kal Penn would reprise their starring roles, and the indispensable Neil Patrick Harris would likewise return with new faces Patton Oswalt and Thomas Lennon hopping on the H&K line.

That already impressive lineup will be joined by returning characters played by Paula Garcés, Danneel Harris, Bobby Lee, and Eddie Kaye Thomas as well as newbies Danny Trejo, Amir Blumenfeld, David Burtka, Fred Melamed, and Richard Riehle.
