Netflix has unveiled four new Turkish original series and a feature film commissioned and presented at a local event by Pelin Diştaş, the streaming giant’s director of original content for Turkey.

Diştaş during the presentation said that Netflix has now produced “more than thirty original series and films in Turkey, making room for new and diverse stories.”

The new Turkish shows, and the movie, that will start production shortly and plan to premiere in 2024 are:

Netflix has shared its upcoming slate of Turkish productions, including four new original series and a feature film.

The announcement was made at a preview event in Turkey by Pelin Diştaş, Director of Original Content (Turkey) who said all projects would begin production shortly and hit the streamer in 2024.

The lineup includes the new series Asaf, created and directed by Özgür Önurme, which tells the story of an ordinary Uber driver with strong moral values who tries to find a way to get his life back on track after his separation from his wife and son. Netflix continues to expand its slate of Turkish originals, unveiling four new series and a new film project.

“To date, we have produced more than 30 original series and films in Turkey, making room for new and diverse stories,” said Pelin Diştaş, director of original content (Turkey) at the streamer. “We would like to thank our writers, producers, directors, actors, technical and set teams for their devoted efforts and contributions to our continued success in Turkey. Together, we tell the world the spirit, the depth, the poetry, the music and the humor of Turkish culture.”

Sharing the results of a survey conducted in seven countries, from the U.S. and Spain to Brazil and Saudi Arabia, Diştaş shared that the desire of subscribers watching Netflix productions in different countries to visit Turkey increased by 2.6 times and their desire to learn Turkish increased by 4.6 times.

The streamer has also launched two reality TV projects.

In July 2020, Netflix canceled production on Turkish series “If Only” after Turkish authorities refused to grant it a shoot permit on the eve of it going into production.

The bone of contention, the original series’ creator and screenwriter Ece Yörenç told the Financial Times, was the presence in the screenplay of a character who was gay. Rather than capitulate to the sensed demand of Turkish authorities to excise this character, Netflix and Yörenç took the joint decision to cancel the shoot.

On Thursday, nine months after the cancelation, Netflix Spain announced a Spanish adaptation of “If Only,” “Si lo hubiera sabido,” written by Spain’s Irma Correa, who has already helped adapt Yörenç’s “Fatmagul” as Spanish TV series “Alba,” produced by Boomerang for Atresmedia.

Correa will serve as the Spanish adaptation’s showrunner, Yorenç as a consultant.

Netflix has decided to scrap production on a Turkish original series called “If Only” after Turkish officials refused them a filming license unless they removed a gay supporting character from the script.

“Netflix remains deeply committed to our Turkish members and the creative community in Turkey,” a Netflix spokesperson told TheWrap Tuesday. “We are proud of the incredible talent we work with. We currently have several Turkish originals in production — with more to come — and look forward to sharing these stories with our members all around the world.”

Netflix has canceled filming on its latest Turkish original, If Only, amid pressure from local authorities to remove a gay character from the series.

The eight-part relationship drama was announced in March and was set to be made by Turkish production outfit Ay Yapim, with screen star Özge Özpirinçci leading the cast. But Netflix has scrapped the plans after producers were refused a filming license because of the existence of a gay character.
