One of the most controversial television talking points of 2025 so far has been Doctor Who Season 2 and its strange ending. After returning showrunner Russell T. Davies used nostalgia to set up the promise of many an intriguing twist, it seemed the final episode dropped most of these in favor of a rushed finish that, although defended by some, left many more with a sour taste in their mouths.
So controversial was the ending that the Disney era of the timey-wimey series seems all but over, with no confirmation on the show's future yet announced. This comes in light of the surprise and reportedly re-shot ending of Season 2 that saw the titular Time Lord's latest incarnation, Ncuti Gatwa, regenerate into Billie Piper, marking her third return to the series in earnest. This has left many to speculate about Gatwa's exit, with the man himself recently telling the BBC's The One Show...

Ncuti Gatwa played the Fifteenth Doctor for a mere two seasons of Doctor Who. Now, he's revealed what he regrets about his time as the titular Time Lord.
While appearing on The One Show, via ScreenRant, he was asked about Doctor Who. Gatwa said he regretted never getting to face off against the Doctor's most iconic enemies. "I never got to fight a Dalek. A Dalek or a Cyberman," he said. "I mean, just the crux of Doctor Who. So, might do that! Might go fight a Dalek!"
Virtually every Doctor has gotten to fight a Dalek or Cyberman or both - the one exception being Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor, who only appeared in the Doctor Who TV movie. However, he did get to fight them in the Big Finish audio adventures.

It's been a few months since the fifteenth series of Doctor Who finished its run on Disney+, and now series star Ncuti Gatwa is opening up about his experience on the show. He even shares how he and former Doctor Who star Matt Smith connected over their similar roles. If you weren't aware, Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor while Gatwa portrayed the Fifteenth Doctor. However, they did not appear on the series at the same time.
News of Gatwa's casting as the Fifteenth Doctor broke out in May 2022. He would star in the role in both Doctor Who series 14 and series 15 on Disney+ before stepping away from the part in May 2025. At the time of his exit, it was unclear why exactly he was departing the British sci-fi series. But in July 2025, Gatwa finally addressed the speculation.

It has now been nearly two months since the jaw-dropping finale of Doctor Who Season 2, with Ncuti Gatwa calling time on his tenure as the titular Time Lord, with the world left stunned as the former Sex Education actor regenerated into Billie Piper. The ending didn't just leave fans on a knife's edge, it also seemingly concluded the entire series, with it still not known what the future of Doctor Who looks like. Despite the return of formerly successful showrunner Russell T. Davies, dropping ratings and wide-reaching fandom backlash have left many disappointed with the Disney era.
Among these many disappointments have come the swirling rumors surrounding the show's future, as well as speculation as to how such a messy ending could've been allowed. With numerous plot lines unresolved and a strong suggestion that Gatwa's regeneration was filmed as late as February in a re-shoot, Doctor Who fans simply want answers.

Ncuti Gatwa revealed the reason behind his exit from Doctor Who after its fifteenth season, which is concerning for Billie Piper in the future. The season finale revealed Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerating again, this time into Piper, who played Rose in the initial seasons of the revival. There has been no explanation about the show’s future.

"Doctor Who" has famously set up a perfect system to keep going as long as the ratings allow. Thanks to the regeneration ability of the Doctor, the series can simply kill and resurrect the main character whenever the actor departs the role for one reason or another. This has turned out to be an excellent, periodic way to shake up the status quo, as new actors (and showrunners) bring their own spin on the long-living role while keeping the show's most familiar traits intact.
Sometimes, an actor occupies the role for quite a long time. For instance, Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1984, appeared in no less than 178 episodes, and three other classic "Doctor Who" era actors also have three-digit episode counts under their belt. Other times, a Doctor's tenure is so short that it seems the fans barely got to know this version of the character.

BBC News has two new highest-paid presenters after Huw Edwards exited in ignominy last year.
Fiona Bruce and Nick Robinson both earned as much as £415,000 in the year to March 2025, according to the BBC’s annual report.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker was the BBC’s best-paid presenter overall for the eighth consecutive year, taking home £1.35M. It will be the last time he tops the list after stepping down in recent weeks.
Robinson, who fronts Radio 4’s Today show, received a £65,000 pay increase thanks to his work on the UK general election, during which he interviewed leaders including Keir Starmer.
Bruce, who presents BBC News bulletins and Question Time, took home a £5,000 bump in salary over the period covered by the annual report.
Although they have replaced Edwards at the top of the BBC News money tree, neither pocketed as much as the former presenter did last year.

Ncuti Gatwa, known to many from Netflix’s Sex Education, has shared the real reason why he left Doctor Who. Talking to the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show, Gatwa said that being the Time Lord was simply too exhausting.
“I’m getting old, and my body was tired… and I’ve now just started doing some ballet, so I’m making really great decisions,” Gatwa joked. He explained that working on Doctor Who was a dream job, but also said, “It’s the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of and – because it’s so good – it’s strenuous. It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally, and so it was time.”

Doctor Who's future is very much up in the air, with neither the BBC nor Disney+ willing to confirm whether reports that their partnership has ended are correct.
We'd imagine an official split will happen after The War Between the Land and the Sea's release, as the spin-off marks what's likely to be the last collaboration between the British broadcaster and global streaming platform. Big changes are obviously on the horizon, and rumours continue to swirl that the BBC is in talks with multiple potential new streaming partners.
Whatever happens, we will eventually get a new Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa departed the series after only two seasons and a couple of Christmas specials, though we've heard rumblings he would have stuck around for a third batch of episodes had the Time Lord's fate not been left in limbo.

Doctor Whostar Ncuti Gatwa shocked just about everyone when he departed the long-running sci-fi series via an unannounced regeneration after only two seasons as the Fifteenth Doctor, especially given the enthusiasm he initially expressed over securing the role. The Rwandan-Scottish actor has now opened up about his decision to cut his Tardis tenure short. However, his explanation is not going down too well with fans, who appear to be suspicious of the reasons that he has cited for his unexpected exit from the iconic show.
Gatwa made his hotly-anticipated debut in Doctor Who during the show's final 60th-anniversary special episode with David Tennant. His casting as the new Doctor was met with resounding applause from fans of the series, which continued throughout his run in the two seasons that followed. He delivered his final performance at the end of Season 2 (aka Season 15) when he passed his Time Lord baton to Billie Piper,...

Back when the BBC struck a deal with Disney to bring Doctor Who to Disney+, allowing the show to be made with American money, it was very exciting. The future of the Whoniverse looked brighter than ever, but ultimately, the fresh lease on life was short-lived. The show couldn't drive enough viewership to appease the immense expectations of Disney, and now the House of Mouse deal is in limbo.
Ncuti Gatwa's run as the Fifteenth Doctor was largely hit and miss. By the end of his second season, he regenerated into our new Sixteenth Doctor, played by none other than Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. The cliffhanger was pretty enormous, and fans are desperate to see how and why the Doctor took on Rose's face. As for when that happen, or indeed whether it'll occur with the support of Disney, remains to be seen.

Doctor Who has faced uncertainty as of late. While Ncuti Gatwa won acclaim for his performance as the Fifteenth Doctor, he was gone before audiences had the chance to really know him.
In the last episode aired, "The Reality War", he regenerated into Billie Piper - but no-one, not even showrunner Russell T. Davies, seems to know if Piper is playing the Doctor or a totally different entity. Fans are confused, and even old Doctors are doubting. Why did Gatwa leave in the first place? Now he's answered that question on a BBC show, via Radio Times.
Gawta appeared on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg and told Kuenssberg about why he decided to step down from the role. It seems it was more for health reasons than anything else. "I’m getting old and my body was tired," Gatwa said. "I’ve now just started doing some ballet, so I’m making some good decisions here.

Did Hugh Jackman almost buy a soccer team with Ryan Reynolds? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
But hold up: he wasn’t about to team up with Deadpool 3 co-star Ryan Reynolds and co-own Wrexham AFC. Nope, Hugh Jackman had a better offer on the table: a £1 co-ownership deal with one of Wrexham’s rivals. Sounds tempting, right?
The offers came pouring in shortly after Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham AFC in 2021, and the small Welsh club went viral. Under the ownership of the Deadpool duo, Wrexham went from a modest football team to a media sensation, gaining global attention, new fans, and a hefty increase in support.
Naturally, clubs across the league figured, “Why not tap into that Jackman-Reynolds rivalry?” After all, the two actors love teasing each other on social media and in interviews, making the idea of a Jackman vs. Reynolds rivalry in the football world even juicier.

Sam Mendes doesn’t think he will be returning to the James Bond franchise. The 59-year-old director helmed 2012’s ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Spectre’ three years later but confessed that he is unlikely to come back for a third movie as 007 bosses plan a reboot following Daniel Craig's departure as Bond.Speaking with Inverse, the filmmaker said: "Never say never, to quote the man, but I would doubt it."It was very good for me at that moment in my life. I felt like it shot me out of some old habits. It made me think on a bigger scale. It made me use different parts of my brain. An interview with Boris Johnson set to broadcast on BBC One Thursday night has been canceled after presenter Laura Kuenssberg said she mistakenly sent the former U.K. prime minister her briefing notes.
In a post on X on Wednesday night, Kuenssberg — a mainstay at the broadcaster who currently hosts the weekend interview program “Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg” — called the misstep “embarrassing and disappointing.”
“While prepping to interview Boris Johnson tomorrow, by mistake I sent our briefing notes to him in a message meant for my team. That obviously means it’s not right for the interview to go ahead,” Kuenssberg said in the post. “It’s very frustrating, and there’s no point pretending it’s anything other than embarrassing and disappointing, as there are plenty of important questions to be asked. Ben Whishaw played James Bond’s technology and weapons expert Q in three 007 movies with Daniel Craig, joining the franchise on a high note in 2012’s acclaimed “Skyfall” and also appearing in 2015’s “Spectre” and 2021’s “No Time to Die.” The latter title marked Craig’s last Bond movie, which has Whishaw predicting that his time as Q is also over.
“I don’t think I’m going to be in the next one,” Whishaw recently told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg about his future in the James Bond film franchise. “I think they’re going to start all over again, and with a new cast, a completely new cast. I think that’s my hunch, but I don’t know. I have no idea.”

Ben Whishaw suggests that the entire cast may be replaced for the next generation of James Bond 007: more here.
Speculation remains rife as to the future of the James Bond movie saga, even as franchise guardians Eon keeps up its policy of radio silence until it’s ready to talk. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are presumably moving things along behind the scenes, but even as the rumour mill throws in names of directors and potential successors to Daniel Craig, we’re still seemingly as we were come the end of 2021’s No Time To Die.
Still, when someone involved with the James Bond saga has a thing or two to say, it does come with a little more weight. And while Ben Whishaw – being interviewed on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg programme over the weekend – is just proffering his opinion, it does suggest more clues.
Speculation remains rife as to the future of the James Bond movie saga, even as franchise guardians Eon keeps up its policy of radio silence until it’s ready to talk. Although the transfer of the James Bond character from lead actor to lead actor seemingly starts a new continuity, there is a slight tradition of supporting characters returning to reprise their roles. Dame Judy Dench bridged the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras by carrying over as M. Desmond Llewelyn would portray the gadget genius Q throughout all the Bond eras until 2002’s Die Another Day. However, as we still sit on the cusp of development for the post-Daniel Craig James Bond films, Ben Whishaw does not think he will be asked back to play Q.
Deadline reports on Whishaw’s interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg when he said, “I don’t think I’m going to be in the next one. I think they’re going to start all over again, and with a new cast, a completely new cast. I think that’s my hunch, but I don’t know.

Ben Whishaw starred as Q in three James Bond flicks alongside Daniel Craig, but over the weekend, the British actor said he isn’t expecting to receive a call to star in a fourth.
“I don’t think I’m going to be in the next one,” Whishaw told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg. “I think they’re going to start all over again, and with a new cast, a completely new cast. I think that’s my hunch, but I don’t know. I have no idea.”
Whishaw added that he would star in another Bond flick if asked but said change could be good for the franchise.

Ben Whishaw doubts he will return to the James Bond franchise. The 43-year-old actor starred opposite Daniel Craig as the MI6 gadgets whizz ‘Q’ from 2012’s ‘Skyfall’ to ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021, though has now admitted he likely won’t be in the next installment as series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Huw Edwards took home his biggest pay packet since 2019 during his final year at the BBC, despite the newsreader being off-air for eight months amid a misconduct scandal.
The BBC’s annual report revealed that Edwards was paid as much as £480,000 in the 12 months to the end of March 2024, his highest salary since 2019, when he pocketed up to £495,000.
Edwards signed a new BBC deal early last year and presented coverage of King Charles III’s Coronation, which will explain why his pay rose around £40,000 compared with the £440,000 he took home in 2023.
At the peak of his powers, however, he was embroiled in a misconduct storm after allegedly paying a young person for indecent images and sending colleagues inappropriate messages. Edwards was signed off work in July 2023 with mental health issues and resigned from the BBC in April citing medical reasons. He has not commented on the allegations against him.

ITV has come out of the blocks first with its head-to-head election debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.
The debate will take place on Tuesday at 9 p.m. GMT (1 p.m. Pt) and will be hosted by Julie Etchingham, who moderated debates during the 2015, 2017 and 2019 campaigns.
“Millions of viewers value the election debates,” said Michael Jermey, ITV’s Director of News and Current Affairs. “They provide a chance to see and hear the party leaders set out their pitch to the country, debate directly with each other and take questions from voters. ITV is pleased to be broadcasting the first debate in this year’s election campaign.”
ITV added that it plans to broadcast additional programing including an interview show with other party leaders and a multi-party debate. Details on these shows will be announced in due course, the broadcaster said.
The head-to-head will be one of only two between Sunak and Starmer.

Are audiences too soft these days? Ralph Fiennes thinks so, at least when it comes to needing trigger warnings in the theater. Fiennes is currently starring in a modern-day retelling of Macbeth, which, as every high-school student knows, contains a few gruesome murders. Some theaters have reportedly been offering trigger warnings in advance of the production, and Fiennes isn’t a fan.
When asked by BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg if audiences have gone too soft, Fiennes said, “I think they have. I think we didn’t used to have trigger warnings. I mean, there are very disturbing scenes in Macbeth, terrible murders and things. But I think the impact of theater should be that you’re shocked and you should be disturbed.“
Fiennes added, “I don’t think you should be prepared for these things, and when I was young, we never had trigger warnings for shows. Shakespeare’s plays are full of murders,...

On Friday (10 March), the BBC announced it had “decided” Lineker would take a break from presenting the sports highlights programme.
The move comes after the presenter became embroiled in a row over impartiality after comparing the language used to launch a new government asylum policy with 1930s Germany.
That same day, Lineker’s co-hosts Ian Wright and Alan Shearer pulled out of the weekend show in “solidarity” with the former English striker.

Hugh Jackman has stated his belief that it is “inevitable” Australia will become a republic in the future.
The actor shared his views while appearing on the BBC One politics programme Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
“I think Australia will become Republican at some point. It feels natural,” he explained in the interview, set for broadcast on Sunday (19 February).
He continued: “It feels like something that is, I would guess inevitable, and I guess would be a natural part of an evolution of a country. You know?”
Jackman told Kuenssberg that he has both British and Australian citizenship and grew up in a household that revered the royal family.
“I’m a British citizen as I am an Australian citizen – I don’t know if people know that but I am,” he stated.
“My father made us stop doing whatever we could to watch, in 1981, the wedding of Lady Di and Prince Charles.

Succession star Brian Cox has doubled down on his support for J.K. Rowling despite repeated anti-transgender comments the Harry Potter author has made on social media over the past few years. Over the weekend, Cox was a guest on the BBC talk show Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, where he was asked about the Scottish Parliament’s recent approval of legislation allowing transgender people to legally change their gender without requiring any medical diagnosis. The Scottish actor praised the decision, saying he was “very proud” of his home country for introducing the law, adding that it was “long-needed” and “a debate that has to happen.” However, when asked about Rowling, who has publicly argued against the Scottish legislation, the Emmy-winning actor defended her right to free speech. “I don’t like the way she’s been treated, actually,” Cox said. “I think she’s entitled to her opinion; she’s entitled to say what she feels.

Brian Cox is offering his support for J.K. Rowling amid ongoing debate surrounding the Harry Potter author’s previous comments that have been criticized as transphobic.
Cox, who plays patriarch Logan Roy on HBO’s Succession, recently appeared on the BBC talk program Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg. Longtime actor and Succession star Brian Cox has lent his support to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling amid her anti-trans controversy. Rowling first became a controversial figure in 2018, when she liked a post on Twitter that referred to transgender women as "men in dresses." The following year, Rowling voiced her support for British tax expert Maya Forstater, who was let go from her job after she published a series of messages on social media referring to transgender women as men. Since then, Rowling has gone on to become more and more vocal on her transphobic views, often claiming that the existence of transgender woman erases the hardships that cisgender women have had to go through. Her comments have caused massive controversy from many once-loyal Harry Potter fans, and have divided many actors within the franchise itself.
