Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are said to be making a ‘scary’ supernatural film next. But what is Deeper, and why do they want to make it?
Across his lengthy career to date, Tom Cruise has climbed the tallest building in the world, clung to the side of a plane during take-off, and fought an Egyptian mummy. What’s left for a Hollywood star who’s done everything? According to director Doug Liman, head off on a mission to the bottom of the ocean.
Liman himself broke the news about what could be his next collaboration with Cruise earlier this week when he told Showbiz411 that he and the star are planning to make a “scary” supernatural thriller together. That thriller is said to be Deeper, a script originally written in 2015 and which prompted one of those studio bidding frenzies we hear about from time to time; at one stage,...

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.
In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.
The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”
Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

M. Night Shyamalan would have done things differently with The Last Airbender if it was entirely under his control. Released in 2005, the American animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender became a huge hit, with fans showering the series with love and appreciation. From then on, the demand for the show went on increasing, and adaptations of it came into existence.
A still from The Last Airbender
There have been numerous instances when the screen adaptation has failed to hit the same mark as the original work (case in point: 2019’s Cats). The Last Airbender is no exception. The 2010 family-action movie, The Last Airbender was a complete disaster. However, it is really unfortunate that Shyamalan had to take all the blame.

The order will conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar in fantastical world.
Since the show’s Feb. 22 debut, the series has been Netflix’s top English-language TV show with 41.1 million views, according to the streamer.
While the first season was eight episodes, there’s no word yet on the episode count of the final two seasons. Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.
The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.
It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.
The plan is to film these two seasons – Seasons 2 and 3 – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.
The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Star Kiawentiio Says Netflix Adaptation “Took Out How Sexist Sokka Was”
Kiawentiio is teasing the live-action Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and is revealing some key changes to Sokka.
When adapting the animated series into live-action, the writers chose to remove the “sexist” elements of the character portrayed by Ian Ousley.
“There’s more weight with realism in every way,” Ousley said in an interview with EW about the remake, with co-star Kiawentiio chiming in and adding, “I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy.”
Ousley continued, “Yeah, totally. There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live action].”
The publication noted that there are Reddit threads that are dedicated to pointing out Sokka’s sexist remarks with the character saying things like, “Girls are better at fixing pants than guys, and guys are better at hunting and fighting.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most beloved American animated shows ever. This is a show that voice actor Mark Hamill once considered "too smart" to be a success, yet it was not only successful enough to get three seasons, it also got a popular sequel series. "The Last Airbender" gave young audiences an anime-inspired show that told a serialized story while still having standout standalone episodes. It introduced kids to a vast and rich fantasy world with lore and history on the level of big franchises like "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings."
It also managed to end on its own terms, with a masterpiece of a series finale that paid off details planned from the very beginning, without giving fans a clean and overly explained ending. The sequel, "The Legend of Korra," doubled down on the complex themes of "The Last Airbender" and used complex...

Season 2 of the New Zealand-made comedy drama, now airing on the streamer as well as Tvnz, is set some years after a plague has wiped out 99.9% of humans with the Y chromosome, i.e. men. And, rather than obsessing about the mandemic’s lost males, “Creamerie” focuses instead on the women who have survived and the different ways they heal and rebuild. The key characters are a group of female dairy farmers and the lone surviving man they have stashed away.

The title of Mark Greaney’s novel The Gray Man (first in a best-selling series) refers to a quality that is as desirable for a spy as it is difficult to find in contemporary movies about their exploits: the ability to move through the world without being noticed, so unremarkable that those you interact with forget you as soon as you’re out of the room.
That ethic barely makes it into Joe and Anthony Russo’s stylish, supersized Netflix adaptation, whose hero (Ryan Gosling) wears attention-grabbing clothes and attracts the kind of mayhem that shuts entire cities down (not to mention being so handsome that the spooks in a John le Carré operation would never let him out in the field.) A side character expounds on the value of blending in, but even he wears one-in-a-million facial hair and lives in a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser,...

Stars: Chloe Grace Moretz, Callan Mulvey, Nick Robinson | Written by Max Landis, Roseanne Liang | Directed by Roseanne Liang
This movie truly was a game of two halves! I legitimately sit here for the first time, in some time, truly struggling to come up with a single solitary clue what I am going to write about Shadow in the Cloud. To say I went into this with little expectations would be an understatement. I went into this with Zero expectations, I knew nothing about it other than that image of Chloe Grace Moretz in 1940s attire walking away from an exploding plane carrying a satchel…
A quick IMDb search later and I find that this was written by Max Landis, being a big fan of the man’s previous work I got fairly excited for checking it out… A further search and, according to the trivia section, Landis was booted from...

Halle Berry’s new production company has hired WME motion picture department partner Holly Jeter to serve as president, Variety has learned.
Jeter currently serves as Berry’s agent. She will stay onboard at WME for the time being as next steps are determined. The hiring news comes after it was announced that Berry had signed a two-picture, three-year first look deal with Netflix in the wake of the streamer releasing her directorial debut, “Bruised.”
“As my agent and friend, Holly guided me through the labyrinth that was ‘Bruised’ and has given me phenomenal advice and insight on material for as long as we’ve worked together,” Berry said. “How lucky am I that she agreed to partner with me and head up my company, where we get to challenge ourselves to produce film and television that center around strong, multicultural, female protagonists. Her vision has already brought some amazing...

Exclusive: Holly Jeter, a partner at WME in the Motion Picture Department, has departed the agency to serve as President of client Halle Berry’s unnamed production entity. The new company will produce a wide array of projects from hard-hitting dramas to light-hearted comedies, action, horror, and more with a focus on elevating complex, strong, women and women of color in leading roles both in front of and behind the camera. Jeter is partnering with Berry as she enters a new two-picture, three-year first look producing deal with Netflix.
Berry’s 606 Productions, a subdivision named for the anti-paparazzi bill that Berry championed to keep invasive photographers from harassing celebrity children, will be nested as a sub-label under the new entity. 606 will continue to produce socially conscious, mission driven projects with a main focus on documentaries and scripted content motivated by the subject matter of the 606 Bill that inspired the company’s name.

Earlier, Sundance announced that its 2022 edition will be hybrid. Most titles will be available online while their in-person festivities start up again in Park City. Their main slate has just gone live as well. Though the festival has a tendency to update their lineup as the festivities grow closer, their competition categories have at least been set in stone.
Naturally, we compiled all of the Asian and Asian diaspora-directed ones we could find so far. Like last year, most Asian titles tend to be in the documentaries. In the World Cinema Documentary Competition, at least 4 entries span from different corners of the continent: India (“All That Breathes”), Myanmar (“Midwives”), Lebanon (“Sirens”), and Israel (“Tantura”). 4 entries revolving around or by Asian diaspora filmmakers make their mark in the US Documentary Competition as well. “Free Chol Soo Lee”, “Jihad Rehab”, “Tiktok.Boom” and “The Exiles” cover fex-Al-Queda extremists, Tiananmen Square exiles, a wrongly-convicted Korean immigrant,...

It’s been another strange year. Perhaps more so than ever, the way films have been released has been in a confusing state of flux. What’s coming to cinemas? If it makes it how many screenings will it actually have? What’s going to which streaming service, and when? There have been a lot of excellent movies released in 2021, but sifting through them has been challenging, even if you’re doing your best to keep up.
Here, the HeyUGuys team have a few suggestions for things that may have slipped through the cracks, but which we think you should catch up with.

The Summit of the Gods (Patrick Imbert)
Based on the Jiro Taniguchi manga, this visually breath-taking, staggeringly dramatic, 90s set, French animated feature tells the tale of Nepal based, Japanese photojournalist Makato Fukamachi (Damien Boisseau), who happens upon the old Kodak camera of a...

Where to Watch ‘Creamerie’: Hulu (the show originally aired in New Zealand on Tvnz)
Sociologists will look back at this point in pop culture history and see 2021 as a year that a certain corner of TV immersed itself in fictional pandemics. “Sweet Tooth,” “Y: The Last Man,” and the upcoming “Station Eleven” all kick off their stories with a world in rapid decline. There may be a bit of a placid intro to kick things off, but it isn’t long before things take a drastic, doomed turn.
To that subgenre, add “Creamerie,” which will probably end up being the funniest of this growing group of on-screen overnight societal transformations. The show leads off with its own share of blood, splattered against a locker room wall. A tracking shot time lapse shows how one building goes from the epicenter of an outbreak to...
