“All the kids in this generation believe that they can follow their bliss,” Zarna Garg says in the trailer for her new Hulu special — before turning heel as always: “No! You will monetize your misery!”
In “Practical People Win,” Garg is doing just that; maybe not with misery exactly, but mining her life for cheeky cultural observations and punchlines as always. The one minute trailer for her special pokes fun at her son, husband, and mother-in-law — which any Zarna fan knows is par for the course. As Hulu’s press release put it, she’s “taking aim at husbands, kids, in-laws, and anyone who dares question an Indian mom’s wisdom.”
Garg rose to fame during the early days of Covid-19 lockdown, when she was starting out as a standup comedian and her eldest son began posting clips of it to social media. The clips went viral, and so did...

Brett Goldstein has set his first stand-up comedy special at HBO.
Titled “The Second Best Night of Your Life,” the hour will debut on April 26 on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
The “Ted Lasso” star and “Shrinking” co-creator has long been a stand-up comic — his first Edinburgh Festival Fringe show debuted in 2010 — but none of his shows throughout the years have received a formal release. “The Second Best Night of Your Life” marked his first-ever stand-up tour.
“I’m so excited to do my first special, not on TV but on HBf**kingO!” Goldstein said in a brief yet enthusiastic statement.
“We all know Brett as an incredibly gifted writer and actor, but his roots are in stand-up. He has a razor-sharp, dark sense of humor and is the perfect combination of British gentleman and cheeky troublemaker. We are so, so happy to work with him on his first special,...

“My mom is really hot,” Goldstein states at one point in the clip out Wednesday, effectively getting the point across. “Recently, I’ve been speaking to lots of couples in longterm relationships and I’ve been asking them about their sex lives — because I’m a pervert.”

The “Florida Man” meme stands out as a bright thread in the tapestry of modern culture, a reflection of the bizarre and frequently gross aspects of human existence. This phenomenon captures the essence of the absurd: tales that are so outrageous that they go beyond just being hard to believe, forcing us to confront the dissonance between reality and our expectations.
The series “It’s Florida, Man” serves as an anthology that brings these narratives to life while inviting viewers to navigate the murky waters of human folly and desperation. Each episode plays out like a twisted fairy tale, mixing the surreal with the every day and illuminating the darker corners of Hu Man’s mind.
The creators of this exploration are Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic, whose backgrounds in comedic storytelling shape a lens through which these crazy tales are reflected. The series is made more complicated by their partnership with Rough House Pictures,...

The service's commitment to humor that blends sharp writing with unique storytelling has resulted in a growing list of acclaimed and fan-favorite series. This year, a new irreverent, low-budget anthology comedy series has captivated audiences, achieving an impressive 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Exclusive: Ahead of It’s Florida, Man‘s Season 1 finale on November 22, the late-night comedy series has been renewed for a second season by HBO.
An irreverent, low-budget anthology comedy, It’s Florida, Man has been proof of concept for HBO, and its impressive performance is expected to usher in more shows developed under that cost-effective comedy model to the network’s late-night.
Acknowledging on an investor call last year that hit drama series in general provide better return on investment than comedies, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, has been looking to revamp the genre, mixing up high-end, star-driven vehicles with off-beat, cheaper entires as the TV industry across the board has been trying to bring comedy costs down.
HBO’s previous lower-budget comedy efforts under that strategy include Los Espoookys and How To with John Wilson.
The latest experiment, It’s Florida, Man, has delivered an attractive cost-vs.

Every few months, the Confederated Union of TV Trend Piece Reporters gathers to launch a flotilla of “Is HBO’s Sunday night domination over?” stories.

But the cool kids know that while HBO’s Sunday remains a center of beloved prestige programming that waxes and wanes in cyclical waves, if you’re looking for the future of television today, you’re better off turning your attentions to Fridays at 11.

The “Florida Man” jokes have been online for a few years. Everyone knows that Florida is a crazy place where things happen that don’t happen anywhere else. HBO’s new late-night comedy series “It’s Florida, Man” celebrates that wackiness, telling ripped-from-the-headlines tales from the Sunshine State in a genre-defying way that’s something like a cross between true crime documentary and sketch comedy, or as someone says in the YouTube comments for the trailer released today, “Drunk History: Florida Man Edition.”
“As stories get wilder, more often than not, they’re not true,” says Carl Hiaasen, the novelist (“Bad Monkey”) and newspaper columnist who’s one of Florida’s foremost chroniclers. “But in Florida, they’re all true.”
The series hails from creator Mark Herwick and director Jeff Tomsic, who executive produce alongside “The Righteous Gemstones” EPs Danny McBride and Brandon James, with Bryan Storkel. The show features interviews from everyday Floridians about the stranger-than-fiction things that have happened to them.

Peter Farrelly’s Ricky Stanicky concerns a trio of best friends who create an imaginary person to blame for their misdeeds. As the years go by, Dean (Zac Efron), Jt (Andrew Santino), and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) continue using “Ricky” as an excuse any time they want to skip, say, a family gathering or sneak out on a boys’ weekend. In such moments, they simply tell their significant others that Ricky really needs them right now.
That’s a solid enough setup for a film, a kind of coming-of-middle-age comedy in the vein of Jeff Tomsic’s Tag, where the characters’ commitment to a childhood tradition ends up jeopardizing their adult lives in the process. But where the antics of Tag’s characters effectively captured the stupid joy of acting like your younger self while hanging out with your oldest friends, Ricky Stanicky is stupid in a much less joyful way.

Comedian Bert Kreischer is sticking with Netflix, signing with the streamer to film two more stand-up comedy specials. This reps the fourth and fifth specials for Kreischer at Netflix, following “Razzle Dazzle” (2023), “Hey Big Boy” (2020), and “Secret Time” (2018).
The first of the two specials will be filmed by Kreischer at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Fla., on July 6. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Kreischer, who grew up in nearby Tampa (where he most recently sold out the Amalie Arena in February 2023). Kreischer’s Florida bonafides include attending Florida State University, where he was infamously dubbed the “Number One Partier in the Nation” by Rolling Stone in 1997.
Kreischer will exec produce the new specials along with LeeAnn Kreischer, Judi Marmel, Tony Hernandez, Jeff Tomsic and Jordan Levy. Tomsic is also the director, while Kreischer’s Berty Boy Prods. is behind the specials.

Exclusive: Peter Safran’s The Safran Company has finalized a first-look producing deal at Warner Bros and has named Wrigley Pictures chief and Rampage producer John Rickard as president of production.
The deal brings together two esteemed blockbuster producers on the Burbank lot: Safran, who has been behind the $1.9 billion-grossing success of New Line’s Conjuring franchise and the highest-grossing DC movie of all time in Aquaman ($1.15B), and Rickard, who in addition to delivering such hits as the $428M-grossing Dwayne Johnson vehicle Rampage was also a producer on New Line’s $320M-plus-grossing Horrible Bosses series. Both are respected by Warner Bros and New Line brass as producers who get their hands dirty, show up on set, and are with the production beyond set-to-wrap.

Jeremy Renner is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but fans may be surprised to learn the actor didn’t always dream of being on film sets.
“My family was my first love, and then music,” he told People exclusively on Wednesday at the unveiling of his new summer television campaign — which features several new tracks sung by Renner — with Jeep. “Acting came into my brain around 20. Music has always been my first love as far as something other than my family.”

Zachary Levi is set to play a spy again in the upcoming film Spy Guys, with Jeff Tomsic (Tag) directing from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel. Deadline reports the following synopsis for the film:
Levi will play a super spy in the vein of Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt who gets in a jam on an impossible mission and can only rely on the help of his moronic college friends who happen to be with him to work it out.
There is not a release date yet, but they want to pump this film out before Levi gets busy making the Shazam! sequel, so they’d better get on it! This sounds like a super funny movie, and I will be excited to see who they cast as his moronic friends.

Shazam star Zachary Levi has lined up his next major role. The rising actor is set to take the lead in a new action/comedy titled Spy Guys for New Line Cinema. This comes from producers Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, who make up the comedy trio The Lonely Island. Jeff Tomsic (Tag) is set to direct and, if all goes well, this project is going to be coming down the pipeline sooner rather than later.

Zachary Levi is going to know kung fu…again. Exclusive: New Line Cinema is negotiating with Zachary Levi to star in Spy Guys, and it has just set Jeff Tomsic to direct the script by Adam Sztykiel. That puts the action comedy on a fast track as the aim here is to get the movie made before Levi reprises in the Shazam! sequel, which New Line is also percolating.
Tomsic made his directorial debut last year on the New Line comedy Tag, and cut his teeth on the Comedy Central series Broad City and Idiotsitter, on which he is executive producer. Sztykiel’s credits include Rampage and Due Date.
