From facing angry mobs in Varanasi to fielding calls from George Lucas, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta has built a fearless career challenging cultural taboos — and at 74, she’s not slowing down.
In a wide-ranging conversation ahead of her career retrospective “Through the Fire: The Films of Deepa Mehta” at Toronto’s TIFF Cinematheque, the filmmaker sat down with Variety to discuss her journey from reluctant cinephile to celebrated auteur whose works have consistently challenged social and political norms over the last 30 years.
“Should I be retiring instead of doing work?” Mehta jokes when asked about the retrospective. “No, too much,” she quickly adds, dismissing the notion of slowing down with characteristic determination.
The Indo-Canadian director, whose films frequently examine divisions – between countries, communities and within individuals themselves – traces her cinematic roots to childhood days spent in her father’s movie theater in the Punjab.

What do you say about a film that hits you hard where it hurts the most, so hard that it takes your breath away? Water belongs to that rare category of films that have the power to re-define the parameters of cinema, to re-align the function and purpose of the medium, and to re-structure the way we, the audience look at the motion -picture experience.
It’s no coincidence that Deepa Mehta’s heroine is named Kalyani. Lisa Ray, as the tragic but irradiant widow, seems to echo Nutan’s Kalyani in Bimal Roy’s Bandini.
The tragic grandeur that Water wears on its resplendent sleeve is a quality that sets it apart from other reformist dramas. The film has a great deal to say about the plight of socio-economically challenged women, specifically the widows of Varanasi in the 1930s. The burning ghats and the waters that flow from them...

Quick LinksThe Pitt Season 1, Episode 10 Tackles Dana's RecoveryThe Pitt Pries Into Dr. Cassie McKay's Personal LifeIs Dr. Frank Langdon Really Leaving The Pitt?
The following contains major spoilers from The Pitt Season 1, Episode 10, "4:00 P.M.," now streaming on Max.
The Pitt Season 1, Episode 10, "4:00 P.M." reveals which unlucky character punches out early. The very premise of the Max medical drama made it clear that at least one of the main characters wouldn't get through the next 15 hours, just because half of them were brand-new faces thrown into the chaos of the ER. But surprisingly, it's not one of the medical students who is sent packing.
"4:00 P.M." addresses the aftermath of Dana Evans being attacked in Episode 9, both for her and for the hospital. But the bigger development is that Episode 10 gets back to a plotline that's been brewing for a long time, and gives it a messy but appropriate resolution.

Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh, which featured Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao, celebrates nine years since its release on the big screen. Subhash K Jha revisits the music and the movie.

In the semi-darkness, in a room lit by dim hope, Srinivas listens to the Melody Queen’s ‘Aap ki nazron nesamjha pyaar ke qaabil mujhe’, that timeless Madan Mohan composition from the film Anpadh. The song plays on a rickety portable sound machine. But its sound resonates across the professor’s silent universe, like a melodic meteor cutting through a sky of solitude.

Manorama, who was known for her comic and negative roles, never got her due from the Hindi film industry. Now when, seventeen years after her death, memes are devoted to her comic virtuosity. It is emphatically tragic that she died in penury.
Hema Malini, who was ‘tortured’ by Manorama in Ramesh Sippy’s Seeta Aur Geeta, remembers the senior actress fondly. “She was so convincing as my wicked aunt; the audience hated her for torturing poor Seeta, and that was me. I remember there was a scene where she makes me undrape my saree. I was shaken after that scene. So evil on screen! But such a warm, friendly human being in real life.”
Sadly, the Indian moviegoing audience largely confuses the actor for the character and the character for the performance. Another brilliant actress, Shashikala, was hated by the public as she largely played negative characters. Sharmila Tagore once...

During a panel at India’s Film Bazaar, Prime Video India’s content licensing head Manish Menghani and filmmaker Nikkhil Advani (“Freedom at Midnight”) discussed the evolving landscape of streaming content development in India, with “Delhi Crime” creator Richie Mehta moderating.
Menghani traced how the Indian streaming space has transformed since Prime Video’s 2016 launch, identifying Covid-19 as a key inflection point. “The entertainment palette of consumers completely changed in this country. Sixty percent of our consumers today watch content in four or more languages,” Menghani said, noting that over half of content consumed on the service comes from outside viewers’ primary language.
For creators pitching projects, Menghani emphasized that while meetings help creators verbalize their vision, “the rubber hits the road on the paper.” He noted the platform looks beyond just the pitch or cast attachments: “What we are looking for is the story.”

Shares of mighty Alphabet are down about 7% today after the U.S. Department of Justice said it should sell its Chrome web browser among other remedies after the tech giant lost a landmark antitrust case last summer.
Government lawyers said in a filing that splitting Google’s dominant search engine from Chrome, which controls about two-thirds of the browser market, as well as from its Android operating system, is necessary to ensure a competitive Internet.
The filing comes after U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in San Francisco ruled in August that Google had violated antitrust laws “by maintaining its monopoly” on product markets including search. “After having carefully considered the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”

There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.
“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”
So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.
Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event is a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
Coming off what would ultimately become her Emmy-nominated role as Daisy Jones in Prime Video’s conversation-dominating “Daisy Jones & The Six” miniseries, Keough wasn’t sure of her next move.
The actress, who will receive the Maverick Award at IndieWire Honors, was immersed in her production company, Felix Culpa, and her debut co-writing and co-directing feature, “War Pony,” received the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. There were paths to go down — but a true tale about the horrific murder of Canadian teenager Reena Virk didn’t seem like the obvious choice.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Mercy Alone,” the series finale of “Under the Bridge.”
“Under the Bridge” doesn’t have “a traditional ending,” says showrunner Samir Mehta.
After the penultimate episode of the true crime limited series saw Warren Glowatski (Javon Walton) sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), in the finale, the white, wealthy Kelly Ellard (Izzy G) received only a five-year sentence despite having been the ringleader.
“Justice wasn’t really served in real life, so it couldn’t ever be that type of story where you get to the finale and the bad people go away,” Mehta says. Instead, the episode focuses more on the characters “finding their best shot at peace and finding a little bit of grace in their suffering. Exhibiting a bit of mercy isn’t ever going to make the horror go away,...

Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta have been working on the Hulu series Under the Bridge for years. Shephard developed the series with Rebecca Godfrey, who wrote the book of the same name. Godfrey passed away in October 2022 right before production on the series began. Mehta was the showrunner and ran the writers’ room. They both were executive producers and writers on the show. “The jobs we had on this show are typically one person,” Shephard laughs. “And we kind of had to merge into one person in order to do this.”...

The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.

Under the Bridge delves into the tragic murder of Reena Virk, highlighting societal issues and the failings of the justice system. Showrunners Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta drew from multiple sources to honor Reena's story and shed light on the true events. Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough's characters offer a unique perspective on true crime, criticizing the justice system through personal lenses.
Hulu's true crime miniseries Under the Bridge explores the life and death of Reena Virk, a case that shook British Columbia to its core in 1997. The show dramatizes the murder and the case that follows, but it is based on Rebecca Godfrey's book of the same name that chronicled the true events. In order to shed light on Reena herself, however, showrunners Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta also incorporated details from Manjit Virk's book, Reena: A Father's Story.

Peter Navarro, the former White House adviser to Donald Trump, was ordered to report to a federal prison in Miami by March 19.
Back in September 2023, Navarro was found guilty by a jury on two counts of contempt of Congress.
In January, the Justice Department sought a sentence of six months in prison for him after he was convicted of criminal contempt of Congress for ignoring a subpoena from the congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He was scheduled to be sentenced on January 25.
Prosecutors also wanted a $200,000 fine. In a 20-page sentencing memo, Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Aloi stated that prosecutors sought to punish the former White House aide for his bad-faith strategy.
Navarro complained that the legal costs of the case left him bankrupt.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta dismissed former Trump White House aide Peter Navarro‘s plea to avoid incarceration while he appeals his criminal conviction for defying a subpoena from the January 6 select committee.
Mehta stated that Navarro’s claim of potential success on appeal was insufficient grounds to postpone the four-month prison sentence handed down last month.
The judge rejected multiple arguments put forth by Navarro and underscored that his claims of testimonial immunity, executive privilege and other defenses lacked merit. While Navarro asserted political bias, Mehta ruled that Navarro’s claims of political bias were unfounded and lacked substance. If the ruling stands, Navarro may become the first member of Trump’s inner circle to face imprisonment for crimes connected to attempts to undermine the 2020 election.

Hansal Mehta’s “The Buckingham Murders,” which premieres at the BFI London Film Festival, will be the first in a franchise.
Written by Aseem Arrora, Raghav Raj Kakker and Kashyap Kapoor, the film follows Jasmeet Bhamra (portrayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan), a detective and mother who, after losing her own child, must investigate the murder of a 10-year-old in Buckinghamshire, going down a rabbit hole of secrets, where almost everyone in the small town becomes a suspect.
Kapoor Khan has said that her character is inspired in part by Kate Winslet’s role in “Mare of Easttown.” “I love ‘Mare of Easttown’ and when Hansal came to me, I said this is something that I’ve really been dying to do. So we’ve molded a little bit on those lines, she plays a detective cop in that,” Kapoor Khan had told Variety.

The concept of eyesight and blindness has been one that has been briefly in cinema, usually through horror or action movies. Hariom Mehta also uses it in his 10-minute short, in order to make a complicated comment through a crime approach.
“Sight” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
The film begins in black and white, with a woman making a sort of bread, under the sound of some subtle music. The clanging sound of something begins a transition that eventually has us looking at a man with a white shirt, towering above the crowd, looking straight at the camera, while a rather deep voice narrates about the concept of watching. Next, a news broadcast informs of multiple murders in the city, cautioning people to be careful. We then see the same man, who seems to be blind, moving around with his cane. He goes into a building...

The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.
Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.
Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

India’s Hansal Mehta has scored his second successive streaming hit of the year with SonyLIV series “Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story.” This follows his earlier success with Netflix show “Scoop.”
Based on Sanjay Singh’s book “Telgi: A Reporter’s Diary,” “Scam 2003” is written by Kiran Yadnyopavit, Kedar Patankar and Karan Vyas. It follows the story of Abdul Karim Telgi, the mastermind behind a scam printing counterfeit stamp paper in India, which earned $3.8 billion. A stamp paper is a government-issued blank document with headers of varying financial values that are used to validate most business transactions in India.
The show is the second in the “Scam” series after SonyLIV’s “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story,” also created by Mehta. This time around, Mehta entrusted directing duties to Tushar Hiranandani as he wanted fresh eyes on the material. Mehta was also busy wrapping “Scoop.”

New York, July 30 (Ians) In a first, US doctors, including those of Indian-origin, used brain implants and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to restore sense of touch and movement in a quadriplegic man – a person affected by paralysis of all four limbs.
Keith Thomas, 45, was left paralysed from the chest down, making him unable to move and feel, after a diving accident in 2020.
After being in a hospital for more than six months, he decided to be part of a novel clinical trial at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
A team at the Feinstein successfully implanted microchips into the brain of Thomas and also developed AI algorithms to re-link his brain to his body and spinal cord.
The team of researchers, engineers and surgeons mapped Thomas’ brain for months using functional MRIs to help pinpoint the areas responsible for both arm movement and for the sensation of touch in his hand.
