Prime Video mulls expanding live news offerings
Image
The streaming service could offer live news surrounding more big events after drawing decent ratings on Election Night 2024.

Is Prime Video about to start its own news division? The idea might give some Washington Post readers pause, but the idea that Amazon is getting further into the news business isn’t so farfetched. According to an exclusive reporting from Variety, Amazon is mulling a larger entrance into the news broadcasting space after drawing good ratings to its 2024 Election Night coverage med by veteran anchor Brian Williams.

Key Details: Amazon reached around 4 million viewers with its Election Night coverage. The company is in early talks to offer more news coverage around select, important events. Available, veteran anchor talent abounds should Prime Video want to continue its news offerings. 30-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month amazon.com

Amazon Explores News Push Following Brian Williams Election Special (Exclusive)
Image
As the results of Election Night 2024 became known, Brian Williams looked to the future. ”Our country is about to change again,” he told viewers of a news special he was hosting on Amazon Prime Video, with a diorama of a highway lane placed behind him. “And life, of course, goes on. Hell, my next gig is to emcee our firehouse annual dinner on Saturday night in New Jersey, my hand to God.”

Williams and others like him may have more to look forward to than hosting community potlucks.

Amazon has been holding exploratory talks about possible news concepts, according to four people familiar with the matter, a sign that the streaming and e-commerce giant sees a chance for news to bolster its economics, even as traditional players in the space are grappling with tougher times. CNN, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News have all cut staff in recent months,...

Brian Williams Brings Standard Election Night Coverage to Streaming With Live Amazon Special
Image
Prime Video took over a soundstage in Los Angeles Tuesday for its first live election special — but despite the expansive space and technology on display, the telecast’s opening hours didn’t feel much different than the multitude of other election night options.

Election Night Live began with anchor Brian Williams reciting a voiceover addressed to the founding fathers, noting what they established for the nation (along with the fact that many of them were slaveholders) while asking for “the strength and wisdom to see our way through this.”

The special originated from a Volume stage (the same kind of high-tech facility used on shows like The Mandalorian). Most of the time, a series of images from across the country was projected behind Williams, with a huge, swooping “Live News Alert” banner taking over the screens when there was a result to report.

The special did a lot of run-up before any results came in,...

Brian Williams Goes Long on Talk, Short on Flashy Graphics in Amazon Election-Night Streaming Debut
Image
Brian Williams didn’t come to Election Night to break news, but rather to put it all together.

The NBC News veteran kicked off an interesting American experiment Tuesday evening by taking to Amazon’s Prime Video to host a live hours-long Election Night special on the streaming giant’s massive platform. Williams got to use his gift of gab while his corporate benefactor got to experiment with fishing for audiences with broadcasts around momentous live events that aren’t an NFL game or other sports event.

“Election Night with Brian Williams,” made available free to anyone who wanted to watch it — whether or not they held an Amazon Prime subscription — launched at 5 p.m., well before official coverage kicked off at MSNBC, Fox News Channel, CBS News or ABC News, and just as CNN began to look at its first exit poll of the evening and NBC News took...

Dems Blame CNN Moderators After Biden Debate Disaster: “Unforgivable”
Image
You can always tell who lost a presidential debate by which party is slamming the moderators afterwards. And in the wake of Joe Biden and Donald Trump’s first 2024 presidential debate, many progressives are focusing their fire on CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, calling out the duo for not fact-checking Trump in real time during the 90-minute face off.

Thursday’s clash featured a performance by President Joe Biden that many are calling disastrous for his reelection chances, with CNN’s own post-debate panelists suggesting the president should consider withdrawing from the race.

But Biden’s behavior also distracted viewers from Trump’s numerous untruths, such as falsely claiming (per The Guardian, The Washington Post and New Republic) that Dems support post-birth abortion, that he had “best environmental numbers ever,” that Nancy Pelosi declined an offer to deploy troops on Jan. 6 (that’s not her purview, for starters,...

Jake Tapper’s ‘State of the Union’ Battles for Sunday Scoops
Image
Jake Tapper talks to CNN viewers all week, but Sunday is when he knows he can have a longer conversation.

In July of 2016, David Brown, the police chief of Dallas, came to Tapper’s weekend program, “State of the Union” for an exchange about five police officers killed during an act of domestic terrorism. Their interview took place over three segments and nearly 40 minutes.

“One of the gifts of the Sunday show is that you can really talk for an extensive period of time with somebody and do a very long interview,” says Tapper, who engaged in his own sizable discussion with Variety earlier this week. “You don’t have to do 30 guests for three minutes each. You can do one, and I think that the best shows we’ve done are when we really give somebody the time.”

Tapper has been at the helm of “State of the Union” for five years,...

Michelle Obama Considering Running For Senate - Report
Michelle Obama may be thinking about running for senate in the state of California, according to rumors about the first family's plans after President Barack Obama leaves the White House.

Obama could run in 2018 for the Senate spot currently occupied by Dianne Feinstein, should Feinstein opt to not seek reelection, according to a report by Orbmagazine.com. Dane Cook Puts Gallagher, Kate Hudson & Jessica Simpson on Blast on “Watch What Happens Live!”
He’s never been accused of being too sensitive, and Dane Cook spoke some sassy sentiments during his segment on “Watch What Happens Live” last night (October 16).

Host Andy Cohen threatened Dane with canned cheese, courtesy of CNN’s Candy Crowley, if he declined to answer any question, and that was enough motivation for Cook to come completely clean.

Cohen asked, “Who is the most overrated comic of all time?” to which Dane replied, “Gallagher- he just wasted food!”

From there, Andy inquired as to the identity of Cook’s worst on-screen kissing partner. “Umm… Kate Hudson. Did a movie with her—My Best Friend's Girl—and I think she purposely ate a feast of onions right before the scene. I had to burn her on that one."

Saturday Night Live (1975)
'Saturday Night Live' premiere recap: The start of something new (and odd)
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Are SNL's growing pains over as it enters its 40th season? It certainly didn't seem that way from the show's bizarre season opener. While Chris Pratt—and Chris Pratt's abs, in a supporting role—conducted themselves amiably, the show seemed to lack the festive air we'd expect from a premiere tied to such an important season. Instead, it seemed on a mission to prove that a new era has come to Studio 8H—one with a markedly different tone. There was only one notable cameo, and it came from Pratt's wife, Anna Faris—not, as might have been expected,...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Chris Pratt Is A Charming Host On An Uneven 'SNL' Season Premiere
Saturday Night Live (1975)
While Pratt did an admirable job as host, even his smile and his abs couldn't rescue some of the night's sketches.

Saturday Night Live kicked off its 40th season tonight with a great host, a leaner and more focused cast, a committed musical guest and – unfortunately - a very uneven handful of sketches.

Guardians Of The Galaxy star Chris Pratt brought his effervescent charm and boundless enthusiasm to the Studio 8H stage, and it was his glowing and magnetic personality that saved the night from being a total loss.

Video: Chris Pratt Interrupts Interview To French Braid Intern's Hair

That's not to say that none of the sketches were good. The sketches that worked really, really worked, and the ones that didn't seemed to bomb hard.

The night started off with a cold open that was a bundle of nervous energy and fumbled lines, even from SNL vet Aidy Bryant. The sketch...

Chris Pratt Hosts SNL: Watch Video of the Best and Worst Sketches
Saturday Night Live (1975)
We count him among the Guardians of the Galaxy (and as the nation’s newest box-office titan, to boot), but is Chris Pratt a master of the sketch-comedy format?

It’s not the easiest question to answer, honestly. The Parks and Recreation funnyman’s maiden voyage as host of Saturday Night Live (for the show’s Season 40 premiere) got off to a rocky start in the writing department — with a thuddingly unfunny cold open about the NFL’s domestic-violence crisis and then a monologue built around a barely amusing acoustic ditty and weak jokes such as Pratt noting his weight-loss plan was the “‘Hey,...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
'SNL' takes on the NFL and all its problems twice and rips off 'Key and Peele'
Saturday Night Live (1975)
The NFL is going through, arguably, its most scandal plagued period of the 21st Century.  The separate Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice cases have dominated the media landscape over the past few weeks and "SNL" was not going to return without weighing in.  Not only was it the subject of the show's cold open, but a second skit appeared later on as the writers made it clear the league's reaction has not been acceptable. In the first skit, Chris Pratt portrays as a bumbling NFL Commissioner Roger  Goodell who thanks controversial Washington Redskin's owner Daniel Snyder, Michael Vick and Saints Coach Sean Payton "for not holding me to the same standard I held him. I appreciate it."  The best parts? Aidy Bryant's continuing spot-on impersonation of CNN's Candy Crowley and Jay Pharoah's just as great Shannon Sharpe. Check it out below. The second skit really feels like...

'Saturday Night Live' Recap: Chris Pratt Hosts; Ariana Grande Performs
Saturday Night Live kicked off its 40th season with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande this weekend, with Darrell Hammond making his debut as the show’s new announcer.

Cold Open

Aidy Bryant starred in Saturday Night Live’s Cold Open performance as political pundit Candy Crowley. The timely bit had Crawley mentioning the NFL’s current public relations crisis. Pratt, deadpanning his lines as embattled NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, thanked the likes of Dan Snyder and Michael Vick for their continued support. Kennan Thompson and Jay Pharoah played Candy’s interview subjects Ray Lewis and Shannon Sharpe, respectively.

Chris Pratt’s Monologue

Pratt’s opening monologue began with a quip about how the actor has always felt a connection to Saturday Night Live, as he actually lived in “a van down by the river” while he was struggling to make ends meet in Hawaii. After noting his 60-pound weight loss,...

'SNL': Chris Pratt Mocks NFL Commissioner in Premiere's Cold Open
Saturday Night Live (1975)
It should perhaps be no surprise that Saturday Night Live began its season-40 premiere lampooning the NFL's recent scandals. Host Chris Pratt portrayed NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Kenan Thompson played Ray Lewis and Jay Pharoah was Shannon Sharpe. Lewis and Sharpe, both of whom previously faced accusations of domestic violence charges, avoided answering questions from CNN's Candy Crowley (Aidy Bryant) on violence in the NFL. Goodell thanked all those people who stood by him, including unpopular figures such as Redskins owner Dan Snyder and Michael Vick. Goodell added that the NFL's new slogan is "We Fight Women," before adding,

Kathy Griffin Needs to Join Rosie O'Donnell on 'The View'
Kathy (2012)
Our first victory in the great 2014 overhaul of "The View": Rosie O'Donnell appears to be rejoining the show alongside veteran panelist Whoopi Goldberg. We basically asked for this. Now let's perfect "The View" once and for all -- we need Kathy Griffin to join the show too. A three-comedienne panel would be a strange new world for "The View," but Kathy Griffin is simply the perfect fit. She's candid, she's able to talk about anything, and she's actually willing to be vulnerable and even solemn when the occasion calls for it. She gets "The View." And now "The View" should get her. Here are six reasons why: 1. She has a great friendship and onscreen rapport with Rosie. Kathy Griffin and Rosie O'Donnell could talk about anything. They don't have to try to be interesting because they're actively interested in everything. It's sort of addicting, particularly in this clip from Rosie's short-lived Own show.

Here's a leftover from Sundance that's also playing on Netflix Instant - Michael Cusumano on "Mitt".

In one scene from Greg Whiteley’s documentary about the two failed presidential runs of the former governor of Massachusetts, Romney complains bitterly about Candy Crowley's interference in the second debate, which led to the infamous “Please proceed, Governor” moment. According to Mitt it was not the moderator’s place to comment or press the candidate for answers.

Former Speaker of the House and co-host of CNN's Crossfire Newt Gingrich appeared on New Day Monday morning to discuss conservative backlash toward his praise of late civil rights icon Nelson Mandela, and changed his tune from the explanation he offered Candy Crowley over the weekend. While citing a misunderstanding of Mandela's legacy, Gingrich also blamed "elements of the left, particularly on one news channel, who went overboard in trying to use this in a chance to attack Ronald Reagan."...
